Mount Holyoke College Top Questions

Is the stereotype of students at your school accurate?

Stephanie

often

Jess

Yes

allie

No. Mount Holyoke students are more serious and dedicated to work than any I've seen. We might know how to have a good party, but we also know how to have good grades. Also, the majority of students are not lesbians, but are rather not going to base who they date on the gender of that person.

Siobhan

To a certain point-yes. Mount Holyoke's diversity is easily one of its biggest assets. If you are not prepared to be surrounded by languages, faces and habits that may be entirely different from your own, then this is not the place for you. Mount Holyoke women have a huge respect for differences in culture and race and this respect generates a community full of different voices and opnions. I absolutely love it. Secondly, Mount Holyoke does have a reputation for being very gay. I think people make this assumption without even attending or seeing the school. Therefore, one can't really assume such a thing. Yes, there are women and friends of mine who are gay. Yes, this school is very accepting of different sexualities, but I feel like that is how any prestigious school should regard its community--with pride and respect. Thirdly, many students here are used to achieving at high levels. It is easy to feel outshined, especially in your first year. But dont let this get in the way of enjoying your studies! You'll come to realize that all the stress and paranoia should be left back in high school. At Mount Holyoke, do your best, try sometihng new and talk to people about what you love. You'll find yourself in a great place academically.

Alexis

While there may be people fitting the stereotype within the school, people fitting this stereotype exist everywhere. Mount Holyoke has a wide spectrum of different sorts of people in it and only when you come here do you see that there is no stereotype for this school. It's much too different.

Jess

Yes they are. We do love doing that all the time always.

Nico

I dont ride horses. I go here and so do lots of my friends. Stereotypes are never true

Ryan

yes we are. we have the attitude because we work for it.

Andy

Not at all

Chris

Everyone here is actually a big bum; procrastinate all the time and nothing more. Get rid of facebook for us!

Janice

they are all wrong because mt. holyoke has the most wonderful and nice population of girls that I have ever come across

Caroline

Not at all. Mount Holyoke is 80{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} upper-middle class which is predominantly white too. So all this talks of diversity is not necessarily true always

Lynn

Because we are a women's college, there are plenty of women who are lesbians, but no, not every woman here is bisexual or homosexual, so the stereotypes are not necessarily accurate.

Alex

NO. we wouldn't survive mt holyoke if we were drunk all the time.

Casey

Wellllll....

Annie

To a certain degree- due to the nurturing nature of the community (and the lack of boys) people feel more open to explore their sexualities.

Andy

To a certain extent, I mean stereotypes all take root somewhere. MHC is definitely diverse, and so you always find exceptions to the rules.

Toni

Not always, a great deal of times we are LUGS or BUGS: Lesbian Until Graduation or Bisexual Until Graduation, but not gay at heart. There are a whole bunch of straight kids too

Stef

Not all Mohos are lesbians in fact they constitute a very small percentage of the student body in my view but they are quite outspoken so are more unnoticeable than other students and thus it seems that everyone is a lesbian. Many Moho take school and grades very seriously and getting an A is very important. In class many students go the extra mile and do things not really required in order to get a better grade but not all students. Some students are comfortable with where they are and don't push so hard.

Cathy

Not at all. People are friendly, helpful, engaging, active, and wonderful

Harper

While this applies to most girls, there are a lot of hard working, middle income girls here who don't just throw away their money. There are also a lot of international students who are very frugal but the majority of girls here are rich and throw their money around.

Jackie

on the outside its looks accurate at times. if you hang out at the library all day long then you see girls making out in the info commons all the time. but there are straight people too and a lot of them at that

Bevan

almost. yes

Liss

yes

Charli

We have parties and fun, but it is balanced with our academics. There are 3 coed colleges in the area, we take classes at their colleges and they take classes here.

Carly

For the most part.

Greta

For the vast majority.

KC

No!

Angela

Some of them surely are.

Jerry

I believe that we are hard-working and drama queens.

Heather

There are a lot of gay women here, but I think that it's because the college is so liberal and open to everyone.

Andy

they are partly accurate. i am not totally sure of the part about 2/3 being gays.

Stephanie

There are a lot of queer women on campus, but it stems from the tolerant and open-minded atmosphere which is fostered here. Women from all walks of life come here to Mt. Holyoke, including gay women, and all are accepted for who they are.

Lydia

They are accurate in that they encompass a certain part of what Mount Holyoke students are like but they don't give the full picture.

Kendall

I do not think the Simpson one is, but the latter is very accurate. At least that is what I see in most people here.

Chris

Are any stereotypes accurate? Of course not! There are always going to be different sides of the story--there is no "one" Mount Holyoke student that represents all of us. We're all different, we all approach things differently, and we should judge individuals one at a time instead of making stereotypes.

Charlie

Not entirely.....but about 30{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} accurate!!

Whitney

Mt Holyoke has the the most uniquely diverse population that I have ever come across. So it does not come as a surprise when you find all sorts of people here. Mt Holyoke is definitely not dominated by one type of culture or student body. Everyone will be able to find their niche, and its just a matter of looking around carefully. In reality, you will be able to find a whole bunch of people who actually have boyfriends, a lot of overachievers and, I guess some of us still do burn our bras!

Marissa

No, not everyone is homosexual, or liberal, or a party person.
