New York University Top Questions

What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

Stephanie

We don't have a football team. Lack of school spirit.

Young

The tuition I believe would be the worst aspect about my school. Although the school offers financial aid to students, it is not a substantial amount to help with some individuals to cope with financial problems. The university seems to focus its budget toward things that will in a sense market the university versus helping struggling students themselves.

Elizabeth

The worst thing has to be financial aid. If you're a middle to upper middle class white person, you can kiss financial aid goodbye. I have to pull three loans a year to cover all my tuition and fees. While this school is amazing, it is still $50,000 a year.

Kaitlin

The lack of merit-based financial aid. There is no place on FAFSA to write that I am trying to pay for school myself, so the family income excludes me from need-based aid.

Jeffrey

There is no sense of community at NYU. I understand it is in the city, but there are ways to make the campus have a much friendlier feeling. When I applied I thought I wanted this, but I was gravely mistaken.

Mallory

The worst thing about NYU is how spread out the campus is. Some of the dorms are really far from the main campus.

Andrew

Probably the administration as they have proved to be extremely unhelpful at times.

Stephanie

The administration is a nightmare to get around, and the school is so decentralized. I can get past NYU's other flaws, but it was always impossible to get anything done, and it felt very impersonal, as if the school was more focused on attracting new students and appeasing the alumni in favor of an endowment. The current students often felt overlooked.

Olivia

It can be alienating and because of that, very challenging for a freshman in college. The administration tries to promote community but the fact is it's a big urban school that attracts very independant students, and these things make creating a community harder. It can be hard to meet new people. There are clubs but they are not that popular, and there isn't much variety. You can feel stuck and alone sometimes.

Andrew

The worst thing about my school is that we do not have any Division I football or basketball teams. We have terrible Division III teams that do not attract a worthy following.

Rebecca

See above!

Rachel

The worst thing about NYU is the lack of a 'college' feeling - very small Greek system, no campus, no community.

Faquira

It's too expensive.

Catherine

NYU has a very arrogant spirit.

Yuliya

The worst thing about NYU is that it is in NYC. The people are terrible, no one cares, and NYC in general is a horrible place to live.

Nick

Some people here take things way too seriously. It's hard to find someone who can take a joke and not be offended. It's very easy to be in a situation where a gang of angry dirty liberal white kids will team up and threaten to bitch slap you if you're not the same as them.

Beatrice

The worst thing about NYU is that it attracts a lot of gay guys so it makes it hard for girls to find guys to date, even though there are a lot of very good looking guys, there are a lot more girls at NYU than guys.

Jeremy

Since NYU is incrediby large, there are several flaws with it due to the size....lack of communication or knowledge between departments., improper advisement, facilities that need to be renovated and/or updated, not enough facilities available, poor coordination, etc.

Crystal

The worst thing about my school is the tuition and lack of financial aid and scholarships it provides. It is hard because students who want to get a good education and do not come from money are forced to struggle financially.

Cherry

I think that the worst thing about my school is that there is no traditional campus, especially when I was a freshman and trying to make friends. I also think that the lack of a traditional campus is a good thing. I don't really feel like I've gotten to know that many people at this school well. It was very easy for me to blend in and kind of disappear with the crowd.

Lara

Facilities

Randall

The lack of a community beyond freshman year.

Amy

no sense of community due to the fact that there is no closed-campus space

Frank

Lack of financial aid.

Cecilia

stressful

Mansi

It's lack of community would probably be the worst part but being in New York City, the city's vibe has simply permeated into NYU.

Teresa

There is not a great sense of community between the students.

brian

There is no sense of community or school spirit.

Patricia

Dorms are tiny and inconvenient, overly strict visitor policies that make having friends over a huge hassle even if they go to the university.

Jason

The worst thing about NYU is the lack of financial aid offered. Tuition and housing costs are obscenely high, and the high cost of living in Manhattan doesn't help.

Amanda

The worst thing about NYU is trying to come up with the finances. Right now the tuiton is very high and is still rising. It is hard to get the funds to go back to school.
