What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Matthew

This is the second time I am going to school. I completed a B.A. in history back in 2004, but the job market forced me back into school to get retrained. I would tell myself 12 years ago, to study harder, and go into engineering like I had wanted to instead of getting a B.A.

Anel

What is to come in the future is a very exciting and new transition, with new opportunities and ways to stand on your own decisions. Overall, dont lose focuse on your studies because of this new opportunity that awaits you. Working hard from the start goes a long way. Many say to put your best effort in your last or junior year. But if you work hard from the start the ending wont be a struggle, just an enjoyment. Stop rushing and stressing the days, take them one by one. Most important do the research and do it right. Go to open houses and ask questions.

Sabrina

I would tell my senior self to choose a college that best fits your major and to also choose a colege that is a good distance away from home. One might believe that home-sickness will occur, but it won't. As a maturing adult one is going to have the urge and desire to try new things and explore new areas of life.

Kasandra

Be prepared for an entirely different culture. College is more diverse, more acidemically inclined, and you have much more freedom to make mistakes. Be ready to take everything in and keep the motivation to do well acidemically and not just socially.

celia

I would tel my high school self that everything is going to work out fine even though there will be a lot of bumps in the road. I will make friends that I will have for the rest of my life, and dont worry about everything just sit back and everything will work out the way it should. I would also say don't slack in your academics, there will always be time to party and hang out with friends, just focus on what you need to do and keep up the good work just like you always have. Your intuition has never steered you wrong.

Otacha

Time management is key in college. Always keep a positive attiude because the professors are only there to help you. School is very important but you should make time for yourself also. Do whatever you have to do keep yourself organized because being unorganized in colleges makes you look bad and allows you to get off track in your classes. College is not all about partying, usually parties don't really occur that much unless you are looking for them to happen. There is plently of on-campus activities for you to attend if you live off-campus, therefore, you are always able to get involved on-campus. If you live off campus make on-campus friends because it helps your college social life a lot.

Maria

I would say," Maria, go to college!" I would tell myself how easy it is to fit in, what great opportunities there are on campus and in life after college. That there is an equal amount of fun as well as education. Studying hard pays off in the end and the friendships made during this time will last throughout the years. I would also explain the truthfullness in the fact that you have to study! And also, procrastination is not always the best thing when papers are due. Don't wait until the last minute to start something you have had all semester to work on. Honestly, there is alot of advice I would give myself in regards to attending college and I certainly do not have enough time to express all my opinions. Finally, I wolud say that even if it feels overwhelimng, once you relax ansd allow yourself to learn and enjoy it while doing so, you will be set in your college carreer and in life to come.

Tiffany

Try as hard as you can in high school and get the best grades you can because it will only make your college experience better. Also, create good study habits because in college the only way you will do good is if you study.

Amadou

I am a good student, college is very different from high school. i was rank #3 in my class in high school. i think i am doing ok as a college freshman. the classes are difficult. The advice i will give myself are, to stay focus in class, go to my classes regular, do what the syllabus say to do. As a freshman in college it is very difficult, because that's my first time to do everything by myself. college gave me a lot of experience, it gave a better understanding of life. My major is Civil Enginering.Thank you for your consideration.

Lauryn

Do not feel like you have to know what you want to exactly do with your career. It is okay to take some time and figure out what you love to do most because this is what is most important. Do everything you do for yourself, not because a parent/other person wants you to do it. Don't be afraid to start college, every freshman is in the same position you are. And most important, if you don't like where you are, don't continue on. Find something that makes you happy and something that you enjoy doing everyday.

Crysta

College life is so different from high school. You don't have people there to ask for assignments or to wake you up. You should always stay on task and never get into the catch up phase. School is really important and the transition will be very hard at first, but keep in mind it's a new experience. Everyone has a hard time getting used to being on their own, but you will get used to it. Don't get scared when you get overwhelmed, you will do perfect if you just put your mind to it.

Jasmine

If i could go back in time to when i was a high school senior i would encourage myself to take each class, especaily math seriously. I would also encourage myself to get in the habit of studying because once you get to college the majority of your time will be spent in the library. The last thing i would encourage myself to do is to practice staying focus on my main goal. It's okay to have fun in college, but never loss focus on the reason your there.

Jillian

I would tell myself that I am on the right path and that I would enjoy my future life as a student in the radiological sciences program at the Penn State University Schuylkill Campus. My hard work in classes such as Anatomy and Physiology and English will eventually pay off. Don't change yourself for your high school friends; you will soon make friends with people in college who won't judge you and will appreciate you for the person who you are. College is a different experience for everyone, but you are up for the experience and you will do fine in the workforce. You are a hard working and determined student and you will succeed in your future endeavors.

Breanna

The advice that I would give to myself if I were a senior in high school would be not to slack. Your work, time, and studying mean everything to your future. Although it's the last year of your high school days, college is a whole different story. Your work as a student in college is more beneficial to your future because you need to do everything yourself. Without procrastinating, you will become a better student. My english college professor once told me, "Time is your friend through this process." The way I took that as is that without timing and proper planning, your work would never get done. The only way to survive in college is to take one step at a time and be on top of what you need to get done. Although the sleepless nights and doing alot of work might not seem worth it, eventually it will become a part of your life and benefit you when you graduate. A college education is so beneficial and will take you far in life. I just hope you and other student's can take this advice and consider getting a college education.

JunRong

I will keep a good grade on the high school and I will learn more things out of the book. Because when we go to the college, every subjects are getting harder and harder. If we can not learn well on the high school, we can not get the highset grade on each of the course that we taking. And I have to make sure the major I want to learn it is about what. Not just when we go to college, someone ask you what is your major. Our should not be undecide or we are not sure what is going with the major. What we should take on or not on our colllege courses. And we should be responsibe to do everything, because we are not on the high school. On the high school they have a lot of securitys to take care of us. But now on the college, you can not do whatever you want like skip the classes, skip the school day. So we have to learn how to be reponsible to do everything. And finally, we should learn how to make a lot of friend on the college life. Make some long term friendships.

Lisa

I am a returning adult student, so I am aware of how hard it is to make it in the world without a good education. If I could go back to high school I would have studied much more diligently, and would have attended college right after high school. Being an adult student though, I find I appreciate what I am learning now. I am very committed to my studies now, and I really enjoy the whole learning experience. I find my classes stimulating and rewarding. I am very proud of what I have accomplished so far in my return to school. In conclusion, I would advise someone in high school to put forth his/her best effort, have confidence in yourself and never let anyone tell you that you cant accomplish your goals.

Joseph

I would tell myself don't get distracted by girls and friends, stay focus on what u came here for. I would also tell myself to work and study hard because the four years will go by fast. Oh yea, work extremely hard your first year to make dean's list so you can recieve as much financial aid as possible!

Erick

dont party to much and keep you head up

Marissa

If I could go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior, knowing what I know now, I would tell myself that college is way more than I expected. Yes there is alot of homework and tests that need to be done, but it is something you learn from and take with you for the rest of your life. I would tell myself about integrity and how much it means to you when your in college. Not only would I practice my integrity but I would also try new things. I would tell myself new studying methods that work like a charm when there is a big test coming up, also not to study the night before but every night days before the exam. As a whole I would tell myself that college is the best part of your life, and that you need to embrace it and cherish it because these are the days you will never want to take back.

Tyler

First of all, I would tell myself studying one chapter in high school is a piece of cake compared to the multi-chapter tests in college. So suck it up and study, its not that hard. Secondly, i would tell myself to visit more campuses. I regret not taking the initiative to explore more options. I thought it would be nice living at home and having my mom make me dinner every night. It is nice sometimes to be living at home, but other times I wish i was experiencing the "real college atmosphere". I would also tell myself to relax the first couple days of classes. Students in college are a lot more mature than high school students and are almost always willing to lend a helping hand. Most importantly, always show respect to other.

Teresa

We take many things for granted in our lives. Start your education by appreciating and recognizing that college is a privilege. Learning in college is more than learning about your chosen career. It's an opportunity to learn new cultures, new friends, and new ideas. More importantly, it is a chance to learn about you. Learn from the mistakes you will make. And if your path doesn't work out, that's okay. Try again. Life is the college of learning.

Jaleesa

to stay strong do not break because you reach a point in your life where emotions start taking over.

yasmine

the advice that i would give myself is to push myself more because i'm on my own also to study as much as i can and just do my best.

Courtney

There isn't much I could tell myself because my high scholl prepared us for the college life and experience. I would have to say make sure I take advantage of the C.A.A (Center for Academic Achievement) and get all the extra help i can. Also i would tell myself to make sure my professor's know who i am just in case i ever need to ask them for help they will know who i am.

Xiao

I would just say be aware of all the hard work that you will go through in college. It's a different level of life. It's no time for playing games. It's the real world.

Anna

I would advise myself to not expect guarantees is housing, and to be prepared to drift aoart from high school friends. i would also suggest that I stay at camput more and join more clubs, to be more extroverted and put myself out there more.

Pam

The only advice that I would give myself is to make sure that I am fully prepared for the college experience. I was prepared for the academic aspect, but not for the drinking aspect. I wish I knew my freshman year to stay away from parties and to focus on my academics more. I did well my freshman year but I could have done better. Now I am focusing more on my grades, but I am still involved in extracurricular activities.

khalid

If I had the chance to go back in time, the advice i would give to myself would be not to be afraid of taking the hardest classes your school has to offer because the experience is much more rewarding than failure. Do as much as you can before you are out in the real world.

Vaughn

I would tell myself to put more consideration into my school work. Right now I'm doing much better in college than I was in high school. I was a bit lazy in high school but its because I could never find paced myself the right way like I do in college right now. I would also tell myself to engage in more college level courses at my high school. If I would of done this I could have avoided taking some college classes at my campus. In conclusion I would just tell myself to apply more onto my studies and not slack off.

Brandy

I graduated high school in 2003. That fall I headed to Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania to pursue my bachelor's degree in Journalism. I graduated in 2007 and although those four years were wonderful and I learned more than I imagined, I wish I could go back to 2003 and tell myself that although they may not seem it, general education requirement classes are just as important as classes in your major, and that you don't have to decide your career path at age 18. I took an Intro to Psychology and although I thoroughly enjoyed it, I didn't take another class. Now, I'm back in school finally pursuing that Psychology degree, and I'm glad to say that that interest is still very much alive. I wouldn't change my education past, but I wish I took more chances and more classes of interest.

Karen

Work hard and do not give up. Just because someone says a college is difficult to get into, don't listen to them. Apply oto many outreach colleges as you can and don't doubt youself.

Oneil

i would tell myself to read more and think hard on exactly what i want my major to be.

Susan

When you get your Associates Degree from Norwalk Community College.... Dont STOP and take time off...go Directly to UCONN-Stamford!!!!

Donivan

You may think that high school is difficult and that it requires much effort, but I assure you, you are indeed being ignorant. After only a single semester at college, I learned that the previously unheeded wisdom passed down to me by my elders, holds absolutely and unavoidably true. College is indeed nothing to joke about. It will possibly be your biggest hurdle in life. It requires intense focus, willpower stronger then the hardest diamond, and when attending a dance, the latest and greatest dance moves so you can out-dance your friends. Donivan, while its absolutely true that attending college and earning excellent grades is a major step in your life, its also true that its the most fun you'll ever have. The parties are unlike anything you've attended in high school! However, the key to success is balance. Don't be tempted to skip writing a paper to go party. If you have to remind yourself to work first, and play later, I would strongly recommend a Biology textbook to the head. So loosen up and enjoy college in moderation, because if you don't its only the rest of your life you're dancing away.

john

well now that i am in college and when i look back i say i should have got straight A's instead of just doin things to get by, but i would tell myself to go harder and never do a half job and stay dedicated and determine to be successful in life since i am the only one in my family to ever go to college.

charlotte

I would tell myself to start balancing my social life and my academic life. I never realized how hard it is to accomplish the first few months of school. Had I practiced more in high school it would not be such an issue.

Beatrice

If i could go back in time to when I was a senior I would tell myself to apply for more scholarships and remember its school and going is something I chose so i better not slack off. I would tell myself that I don't need to party so much and maybe i could stay in some nights and do more homework or get e decent nights sleep. I would make sure I understood the importance of keeping my paperwork and financial aid up to date. Also, I would pound it into my thick skull that skipping class, for any reason short of serious injury, illness or death is unnacceptable! I would also let myself know that college isn't about who you date and why you did it, its about learning, preparing for the future, making friends, and growing up. However the most important thing I would tell myself would be to go and never give up even when it looks like everything is falling apart around me because in the long run its worth it. College is for finding and securing my future so I should just enjoy it, even the parts I dont like.

Laneesha

If I had the chance to go back and give myself some advice, I would first tell myself that college is way different from high school. I would also tell myself that in college you are on your own. There is no one here to baby you. From this point on in my life I control my own fate. I have the ability to do something good with my life or destroy my life. Once you get to college the hours you spend studying will most likely increase. I would also tell myself that no matter what happens, make your college the best thing that has every happened in life. Go out have fun, study, and stay focused.

Lee

High school may have come easy to you, but college will not. There are concepts and topics covered in college that are simply not discussed in high school. There isn't any real way to prepare for this other than expecting to work hard and be diligent about your work. Arrive on campus with the desire to succeed.

Sean

I would tell myself that it's a lot of work, but not to get too stressed out. Everything will be fine and college will be even better than high school. If I try hard enough and do my best, I can accomplish my goals.

Katherine

I would've applied for the program I'm in from my freshman year. I would consider double majoring and telling myself my studying habits have to change to keep up with the work load in school. I would also tell myself to get a better car for any commuting I would have to do and I would say to stay in contact with old friends as well as the new ones I will be making. I would tell myself to continue staying as open to new people as I have been and if I need help or am confused about something to ask questions during class lectures or stay after class. I would also tell myself not to let the stress bring me down and just keep my eye on the goal and on what's important to me and my future.

Shade

The advice I

Leonard

Work a lot harder 6th grade on. Don't let people get into your head. When you get to college make sure to get good rommmates that you get along with.

Melissa

Do not count out the college that is close to home. It could be right where you want to be. Make your own decisions and do what makes you happy. Base you decision on what is best for you, not what is best for others in your life.

Tyffany

The advice i would give is make sure you make time managment to study, because it's more challenging and more responsibilities. Also, you manage your own time and make your own decisions about what activities to participate in and face consequences. Professors may not take roll and do not report if you are absent, but you are expected to know your graduation requirements. Also, professors may not check homework and expect you to obtain material you missed and to ask if you don't understand something. Even if you have 3 exams in one day, you will still have all 3 exams to take. Grades on tests and major projects provide most of the course grade. Extra credit projects cannot generally be used to raise a grade. You may graduate only if your GPA meets the departmental standard. Overall, make sure you attend class and study for your exams.

Devon

If I could go back and tell my Sernior self somthin it would be to get more involved with your acedimics. the knowledge you gain your senior year is what you will carry over to college with you. It is very important to obtain the knowledge of writeing and mathmatics to attain a good start on your college carrier. Most important though, pay more attention in your language class so you dont have to spend 3 years taking a language you already know.

Jade

At times I do wish this was possible. Basically, I would tell myself to pay attention more and study harder. If I would have done all of that in high school then I would have been more prepared for college life. I also would have made good use of digging up information from the people and resources that were available to me in order to help answer all the questions i had about college life. When it comes to making friends, I would have told myself not to be so shy; to say hello and befriend those I don't know. Doing so will help build connections right away in college life, making it feel more like a home.

Justin

The advice I would give to my self is to stay focused to my school work and stay true to my goals. I would also tell my self to get involved with school activities and make lots of friends because if you don't you will not experience the college life. Another thing I would tell my self is to work hard because in the end it will be rewarding . One last thing I would tell my self is to just have fun and enjoy your college years.

alexa

I would tell myself that i should of applied myself and my knowledge to do better. Also, I would have told myself not to be so nervous the first day of class and to not stress out so much about school. I think that I thought college would be so hard and I wouldn't do good in my classes. But now that im done my first semester, I realized that it's not as hard as I thought. So, my basic advice I would give myself would be to not stress about stupid things and to not be so nervous. The most important thing is to apply your knowledge to suceed well!

Ayesha

College is very diferent from what you are use to now. When you get to college there is no one to tell you to go to class or study. In college there is a lot of freedom. Learn how to manage your time, put school first but still have a social life. When its time to study start a week before the exam and take your time. Ask questions and don't be afraid that people are going to judge you because most likely they're thinking the same thing. Join lots of clubs, and don't be afraid to be a leader. Get to know your prefessors and makes sure you go to them for help. Participate in class. Don't be afraid to be smart. Get the best out of your college experience because it cost money now. If a course is difficult do be so quick to drop it, try to go to tutouring first. If tutouring doesn't work out talk to your prefessor and your advisor. Do not drop a class with out speaking with your advisor first. College is a time to find yourself so don't be afraid to step outside the box.
