What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Lindsay

Let your children be on their own.

Kristina

I live off campus, so it is very difficult to make friends since they naturally form cliques with those they live with. I think that for individuals who are not as outgoing should going to a smaller campus, it will make it easier to speak with professors and better understand in the classrooms. I didn't participate in many shadow programs for colleges and they are definitely the best way to see the campus and how classes will work with size.

Ashley

Make sure that ou visit the campus a few times. Find students outside the ones giving tours to ask them about there experience at the college.

Jennifer

Definitely look around. The first school you go to isnt going to be an exact match. Sit in on a class, talk to the professors, not just the admissions people.

Kristina

visiting the college and going on tours. try to talk to other students that attend the college

Gary

It may seem like a daunting task, but spending enough time with the college selection process will pay off in the end. Talking to current students is probably the best way to determine the extent of college life at a particular institution. Tours and pamphlets are informative, but hype up the school in question. However, actual students will give you the real scoop. It's important to know what you want in your college, so that you can find out if that college is a good enough fit. Going into the process blind and unsure of what you want can be overwhelming when it comes to selection time. Being well-prepared ahead of time, visiting the colleges and talking to students can all make a seemingly stressful time in life an exciting time instead.

Do research! Take everything about the college and its surroundings into consideration. Go online and read about it, read reviews, visit the website, that's what is there for. Be open minded to colleges that you may know nothing about. Request materials from the school and definately visit! Actually being at the campus is quite different than reading about it. It could be exactly what you expected or the worst thing possible, but you don't want to enroll and then have it be different than what was expected. Look at colleges that have a major that interests you and also the student to teacher ratio, that is key. You may be the type to want to sit in a 500 person assembly hall or a class of 30 people, whatever it may be, there is a college or university that accomodate for this.

Meagan

Making the right college choice is tough. However, it is important that you find a college setting that is right for you. There is a place for everyone at college, you just have to find the right one.

Sarah

Attend a college that makes you feel comfortable upon stepping onto campus, it really makes a difference. If your child does not feel comfortable, they will never be able to concentrate and get the grades they need to get to succeed.

Ashley

It's not always possible but find a student on the campus who will give you a truthfull description of the students. The other students is the only thing that makes a solid difference.

Derek

In reality there is no set way of perfectly determining which college is perfect for you. In my best advice i would say to visit as many colleges as possible. Pick the ones that just "feel right" and take advantages to any overnight or weekend stays that the college may offer. Multiple visits is also a great way to coose the right college for you. Students also have to be flexible. college is a whole other realm of life for students and they need to be flexible for whatever life changes that college throws at them. You may also have to accept that whatever ever college you may choose may not be right for you and transfering may have to become an option. However, if you were to follow my advice for constant visits to the college and seeing it at different times of day and different times of year, as well as being flexible to the shock of college life, you will make the best choice you can. In the end it comes down to making the best choice for you and for your future and if you stay focused and stay flexible, you will succeed wherever you go.

To make sure that the school has the program you want, and find a school that does not revolve around drinking if you don't drink or do drugs, which is hard to find...

Caitlyn

Make sure you feel comfortable, when you enter the campus you should feel like you are right where you belong. Talk to a few students around campus, get a feel for the campus life.

Kelly

Go with your gut! :) Get as involved as possible, be nice, be genuine, and always keep an open mind.

Andrew

Don't ever transfer for a girl it'll ruin your life.

Robert

For the parents, they should always let the student decided where they want to go to school because the parents should want their child to be happy.

Amanda

The advice that I would give parent or incoming students about finding the right college is that you should look online and find a few colleges that look right for you, and than once you find these schools vist, them again and again and again. JUst keep visiting schools and when you find the one that you want to go to you will know, because that school will just stand out so much from all of the others.

Jessica

Make sure you do a lot of research.

Mary

In order to find the best college and to have the most rewarding college experience a risk is necessary. Joseph Campbell once said, "We must be willing to get rid of the life we've planned, so as to have the life that is waiting for us." Do not be afraid to take a risk when choosing a college - move to a new location, explore majors, or try new activities. The most rewarding experiences are those where a risk is taken, new challenges are met and overcome, and one is changed. This does not mean a person should give up their core values when deciding on a college to attend. On the contrary, college is all about holding fast all those values which define oneself. What better way to know what you're really about , however, than when you attend a college that offers new experiences and opportunities? Study abroad, take an honors class, run for president of your class, or start a recycling program on your campus. To make the most of your precious four years truly immerse yourself in opportunities such as community service or clubs that you may never have the opportunity to take part in again.

Nicole

I would say that the student should go to whatever school makes them feel the most comfortable, and to choose a school that has a good program in the major they want to do. To do well, I would recommend they stay on top of their schoolwork and visit professors if they are having problems in class.

Sarah

To find the right college you need a balance between education and social life, meaning activities, sports, clubs, etc. You need to make sure that the school you are looking at is going to provide you with things you need to suceed, you also need to make sure that you will be getting your money's worth. It is important that the student is comfortable with the campus and the surrroundings. If they are not comfortable, they will never be able to concentrate on their tasks.

Taylor

All colleges of interest should be visited by both the parents and the potential student together. When finding and choosing the right college for you, make sure that you take into account the size of the school and the classroom sizes, the teacher to student ratio, the availability of living quarters on campus, and ensure that they have plenty of available fields of study. Choosing a school with the right size is crutial in the choosing process, as some students better learn in smaller environments whereas others learn better in larger environments. Classroom sizes and the teacher to student ratio is also very important, as with a small school, teachers are able to get to know their students better on a first name basis rather than the student just being a number in a class of 300, which is the case with larger schools. Being able to know your teachers on a personal level is important because then students are able to feel comfortable with visiting their teachers for any extra help that they may need. Lastly, having plenty of available fields is important in case you decide to change majors which is the case with a number of students.

Alyssa

I may just be a college student telling you my beliefs, if you don't want to follow what I say that is your decision because it is your decision and not mine. First look at many different schools; Let them range from small to big. when you realize what size you like concentrate on what the college offers. Secondly when you find the perfect college you realize it right away. You will get the chills and it a feeling that you just want to be there. Third do early decison if the school has it. Realize that it's not the end of the world if you don't get into your first choice. A school is a school is a school, or that they are all similar. Make the best of what you have. Remember you make that school great. If you are not participating in activities that school is not going to be worth it. I hope this helps, but it is your decision to follow this.

Natalee

I would advise students to visit the campus and talk to some of the students there. Some colleges maybe misleading if you just talk to the administration. Also, keep your options open and look for a school that has what you want in most. Do not go to a school just because they offer you a full ride because you might not like it!

Alicia

Definately make sure you pay attention to the kinds of students on campus during your visit to make sure you feel you will fit in and be comfortable. At the saem time, once you arrive on campus, be open to trying new things, get involved as much as possible, but make sure your schoolwork is the number one priorty.

Matthew

My only advise to patrents and students as they get ready to attend college is that one must keep an open mind and choose the school with the most opportunities in the professional, acedemic, & extracurricular world.

Megan

In order to find the right college, the student should figure out what size school they want. Also, families should take into account the surrounding area of the college. Sometimes students need to just get off campus for a day, but if you're out in the middle of nowhere, there will most likely be nothing to do. Once you are at college, the student should get involved. This is the best way to make friends and build a great social life.

Stephanie

In order to decide on the right college there are several suggestions I would consider before making the final decision. I would make a list of criteria that describes the perfect college for you. This could include size, location, diversity of the students, campus life, etc. Also, when applying I would find multiple schools that match your criteria for what you are looking for in a college. Visiting several schools is always a good idea in order to compare. Aside from the cookie cutter advice that parents all over the world will hear, what you honestly need to look for is a school that can provide a plethora of majors for those students who are undeclared, a school community that is able to have fun on and off campus, a campus that gives students more than one option for food, and finally, a campus that can accommodate to any student?s needs, whether academic or social. To make the most of your experience, do not focus all your attention on one aspect of your life. I suggest studying abroad, getting involved on campus, and making the most of your time at school, as not everyone is given this opportunity.
