South Texas College is a great community college to have a clear thought on to just come and learn. It is a very safe environment to be with friends and study alone. It is a great way to start off my college life, especially for myself that i'm going to be transferring .

I love South Texas College, with all its flaws. I would recommend it to everyone, its great and cares for each and everyone of the students. Teachers available in and out of class, activities, clubs, etc. For a great cost of books and classes, STC is amazing

What is your overall opinion of this school?

I think South Texas College is a nice school to start off on. I plan to transfer schools, so I think that with beginning my college career, it is a good place to begin. The instructors are overall concerned and teach the subjects well. I would recommend that students start college life at STC.

What is your overall opinion of this school?

South Texas College is a great school for either finishing basics and transferring to a four-year university or even completing a bachelor's degree. Unfortunately, because we are a community college, a majority of our student body are "parking lot students" also due to the fact that we don't have a WIDE variety of organizations to join.

Great RGV College!

South Texas College has 5 campuses through out Rio Grande Valley. It has hired very good professors and are all very supportive of their students. Everybody is social with everyone and are supporting others to get involved in clubs at school and it's so much fun! STC also gives students the opportunity to study abroad and many other interesting and exciting things for students to try!

What is your overall opinion of this school?

The school is very well funded and very updated. Student computers run at least i5 processors. It is also very safe with two lines of defense: securities and a college police department.

When you step off campus what do you see?

STC is located on the corner of two busy streets. These three things appear: restaurants, small businesses, and some traffic.

Describe your school to someone who's never heard of it.

Think of a institution with most buildings not even a decade old. Think of a clean, modern appeal and that is the layout of the campus and its interior.

What are some hot-button issues on campus?

Parking. Abortion. Vegetarianism.

What's the hardest thing about freshman year?

1. Not having to ask for permission to go to the restroom. TMI in college 2. Not having report cards during the term. You calculate your own grade. The percent weight of each assessments, assignments, projects, and the final are described on the syllabus. You passed high school, so you are expected to be able to calculate your course average.

What are the most popular classes offered?

Extra-curricular and basics. They transfer out to most public institutions, even to MIT. The most popular programs like welding and interpreting are the certificate programs and allied health programs.

Describe the dorms.

There are no campus dorms, but there is are a series of apartment complexes right across the street. There are also houses nearby for rent. The surrounding areas are also undergoing upgrading with the construction of the new park and need-based family housing.

Tell us about the food and dining options.

The Cafeteria and on-site Barnes & Nobles are the only on-campus dining options, sorry no Starbucks in the Barnes & Nobles. Anything pre-packaged is over-priced, so just head down to the H-E-B on the corner of the street. List of restaurant's within a block radius: Blimpie (Similar to Sub-Way), H-E-B Chinese, Jack-in-the-Box, McDonald's, Taco Rico, and Sub-way.

What do people really wear to class?

Most people wear casual or sports wear to class. Some come to class with their work uniform on, usually nurses who are constantly on call. There are some people with the "just rolled-out of the bed" look, but there is no "dress-code". There is someone with revealing clothing every two weeks or so, but most people dress appropriately.

Describe a typical weekend.

STC offers Saturday classes, but the majority of students on campus are either making payments at Cashiers, sending out transcripts from Admissions, receiving tutoring at the Center for Learning Excellence, working/chilling at the Library, or meeting with an instructor because the office hours were inconvenient.

Tell us about your professors.

Professors have a minimum of a Master's Degree, but new changes within the college are requiring faculty professors to have a Doctoral Degree like the most of the professors already at STC. Some professors are really helpful, most are willing to meet you during office hours to help. There are a few clueless professors, but there is usually more than one professor for each course (uncommon in the Bachelor degree, though). In either case, talk to the department chair about any concerns and suggestions for improvement.

What are your classes like?

The classes are as small as 8 students and as large as 56. There is one course, Microcomputer Applications, that is offered in a computer lab the size of two computer labs. The classes have a mix of students from all ages, dual-enrollment, fresh out of high school, and returning students. Some classrooms have benches and others have desks that seat two people. The only exceptions are computer labs and the single auditorium class mainly used for the Bachelor degree courses.

How often should I phone home? Is once a day too much?

South Texas College does not offer housing so the only calls home would probably involve asking for a ride or a notice of the time you will get home.

I don't drink. Will it be hard for me to go to parties?

Not hard, just make sure your drink is not spiked with anything.

Where is the best place to get work done on campus?

The best place to get work done is on the second floor of the library. It is a quiet-zone with plenty of space and furniture. The Wi-Fi connection is strong there, as well.

Describe your favorite campus traditions.

The stomach-oriented traditions would involve the cook-off competitions hosted by the culinary arts program. The family friendly traditions would be the Fall Festival and Turkey Trot (Thanksgiving 5K).

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

There is never free time if you slack off during the week. Always read before classes in order to get ahead because some professors may quiz you. It is not fun to be inactive with the school activities. The atmosphere may lighten up your stay at the campus which will keep you attending school. Always find someone from one class to study with. You will find they will be very helpful at times. Do not be afraid to ask questions during class or meet with your professor during office hours. They may give you extra credit for visiting. Always introduce yourself the first day of class. The professor may remember you throughout the semester and may be more leniant towards you. It is a better college experience if you stay in the dorms. It is one thing most students never experience. Always study every day for 2 hours each class. Quiz yoursef in between chapters.

What's unique about your campus?

The tuition is low and it is nearby my home.

What's the most frustrating thing about your school?

The requirements change yearly which can be a setback for most people.

What are the most popular student activities/groups?

South Texas College Students seem to be caught in limbo, between college and high school. So the popular activities vary widely. Some of the most common tho are: listening to music in the cafeteria or courtyard; going out to get food; playing soccer, ping pong, or flag football.

What are the academics like at your school?

The academics are by no means astounding, but considering what it once was the difference is incredible.

What is your overall opinion of this school?

Well I have been to a couple of school and I have to say even though South Texas College is going through a growth spur I have enjoyed my time there immensely. Especially with all of the VAM staff who are full of knowledge and the willingness to pass it on to us. I have learned a lot there not only about how to create art but about myself and hope to continue my quest for knowledge elsewhere.

What is the stereotype of students at your school? Is this stereotype accurate?

I am not so sure usually people go to south Texas college to take the general knowledge classes and then transfer to a four year program.

What are the most popular student activities/groups?

I would have to say the ones associated to the medical field since their programs get most of the money.

Describe the students at your school.

Well there is a variety of ages so it is hard to say. Some are still to young and tend to be annoying in class but the again so are the older ones. Some take the professors seriously and others dont.
