What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

My college experience has been quite interesting in my first semester. I have met many interesting people, and have three jobs. I think the major value for me of attending college is all I have learned in my first semester. My professors are great, teaching me important skills that I think I will find quite valuable through my life. I have learned various things in my first semester, especially media history, research skills, and other facts related to my classes. I also have learned people skills from the three jobs I work at the University. My primary job is at Temple Computer Recycling, working on computers that departments are done with. This job involes technical knowledge and people skills, both of which will be useful in the future. My other jobs include working with professors, working on different projects, and learning important skills. I think that after I finish my four years at Temple Iniversity, I will leave ready to face any challenges that I may have to face in the world.

I did the running start program through my high school and that allowed me to get the first two years of college while preparing for high school graduation. In my experience I can say that Highline Community College has helpped me become more independant in knowing what classes I needed to take in order to fufill the requirements for both high school and college at the age of 16. Along with that it has also solidified even more that I know what I want in life and as a profession. The education department has really kept me on track so that I may obtain my AA with and emphasis in education and continue onto higher education so that I may become a certified early childhood special education teacher.

Deciding to attend college and actually following through with it has been the most life changing action I’ve done so far. I come from a big family and if everything goes well, I’ll be the first one to graduate from college. When something doesn’t work out quite the way I hoped, just the thought that my grandmother didn’t have a chance to learn how to read until she was well into her fifties definitely gives me courage to try again, and if I fail, l to try once more. Staying busy with homework and learning new and exciting things everyday has kept me out of trouble, and changed my views on life and what’s really important. It saved my life, which is more valuable today than it was before I started college. There’s still a long way ahead of me, but based on the experience so far, I’ve learned that anything is possible if you really put your mind to in and don’t give up at the first sight of trouble, or second, and even third.

I have recieved a great eduaction thus far. I am very satisfyed with my grades, which inspires me to go on in my studies. I have learned a lot about people, as well as academics. In college I have matured and become more responsible. I have learned to value my education, and relized that in todays world it is imperative to have your degree in order to be successful.

Temple was a great experience. I learnt how to socialize with different people and how to approach people. I also learnt how to balance my time in between my school work and friends. Temple has a lot to offer. It has something for any kind of person. There's always something to do and I never even had a chance to be bored. I was very happy that I decided to go to Temple. It was the most amazing time of my life.

Going into college, I was an apprehensive young girl with a fixed outlook on life that I believed to be basic and true. When I arrived at Temple University in the fall of 2010, I realized that all of my previous thoughts on life, college, and people were all in need of reflection. With the diversity of the student body and wide range of courses I soon discovered that there are many avenues of life that can and should be studied. My college experience so far has shown me that it is important to keep an open mind and to take advantage of all there is to offer. This world is filled with wonderful opportunities that are placed in your lap at college, and it would be foolish to ignore them. Attending Temple has been extremely valuable, not just in education but also in emotional ways. Being off campus has given me a new view on people and how to deal with rough situations and also how to handle myself. I consider myself to be extremely blessed in my opportunity to attend college and would recommend the experience to all students willing to do hard work.

Coming to Temple, there are certain things a student knows and expects from the University. It's known to strive for diversity, it's known as a large school in an urban area, and it's known as a school that tries to cater to the community. What you don't know as a student, is what those facts will come to mean to you personally. Lately crime in the North Philadelphia neighborhood has escalated, and students feel unsafe getting from class to their apartments. Because of this, an "us vs them" mentality is established between students and community members. I myself remember tensing up when someone "suspicious" walked towards me, only to realize that he was a block leader tending to the community garden. I consider myself a forward thinker, but even I was not immune to the prejudiced, irrational behavior that arises from fear. My experience at Temple has taught me to see everyone, including people I consider bigoted, as individuals.

What I have gotten out of my college experience most is a better understanding of responsibility and accountability. If you do not honor your commitments you are going to be held accountable. In college there is no one looking over your back to see that you're doing your work and everything that you are supposed to be doing in order to achieve success. Therefore it is up to you as the student to stay on top of your work and manage your time responsibly so that everything works for you accordingly. Once that happens everything will fall into place.

I have gotten the world out of my college experiences. Attending college has opened my eyes the diversity of this earth that I could never have encountered under any other circumstances. Where else could I have lunch with a devout Muslim, a painter, and a birthday party clown at the same time? I have grown and matured and my understanding of what life is and how I am supposed to live it has become more confusing than ever, but that is a good thing. I do not want to live my life with a one track mind. I want my eyes to be opened to new people and experiences and that is what college has offered me. It has been valuable to attend college because along with my maturing I have gained more responsibility. I now am a ware of the magnitude of the sacrifices my parents made and continue to make in order for me to have receive a higher education. That makes this entire college experience all the more worth while. College is not easy, and admittedly it is not for everyone, but what I have recieved from college you can not put a dollar amount to.

What i have gotten for school is my education. Why has it been valuabele to attend is because education is the key to sucess. when you have education you can feel the love, the peace and harmony. Cosnider me a student who is struglling at Temple university , in need of assiatnce and with help of this 5,000 schoalrship i can fullfill my educational desires. With this helpi g hand i can be able to find a job and later in life and open my own scholarship fund. As a first semster at Temple i think this is the worst semster ever and as a junior i wish it gets better for me. I am hard working student and from this i got more knoledge alone without no support from no tecaher because we students risk everything in order to continue on. We risk our money , our time and college is just full of risks.please choose me as a canadiate of this scholarship as i am well groomed student who is just facing diffculties and trying making the bets out of this tough economic times. i know i can do it and giving up is not an opttion .

I have learned how to talk in front of people and to use power point. I have learned to use a computer to compliment my work to use as a tool to help others to learn information not only I need, but for their own studies. I have learned to communicate more efficiently and get my point across. I have learned to write a report and make it understandable. The labs I have taken in forestry have provided on site or hands on to help me look for the identifing marks of trees and plants that I will be working with in a job I will be doing for summer or permanent work. Management in forestry is kind of tricky. I feel that a forester needs to know both a little of natrual resouces and a lot of forestry. So I take classes in both to make myself more valueable to the prospecting employer.

The most important thing I have gotten out of my college experience so far would have to be, staying true to the reason why I am in college in the first place. I have learned that when you lose focus, you fall of track, not by personal experience, but by watching others. I have learned to keep my focus on my goals, and my main reason for being in school; that dreams I have is what keeps me on track. Most people come to college and forget who they are, and why they are there. That is another thing I have gotten out of my experience, never losing touch of who you are, just because you are away from you comfort zone also known as home. If I could share one bit of advice it would be " to never lose yourself in college, and remember why you here", I think that would help a lot of people eventually. Some people forget what college is all about, of course it is to be enjoyed, but in the end it's all business. You have to stay focused, thats they only way you will survive.

My college experience has taught me a lot. I've had to learn to live on my own and not have my parents near me for support. While they are just a phone call away, it is harder to deal with alone. Getting used to a new room mate is also a challenge. While I have brothers and sisters, having a complete stranger for a room mate is a totally different experience. Learning to make new friends is slightly difficult, however due to diverse campuses, I found that one can always fit in somewhere. I have also had to learn time managment. Learning to keep studying on track with work for classes in addition to finding time to work a part time job was a difficult experience for me, however I think I learned how to organize my time much better from that experience. I have also learned how to balance all the work with making some time for fun. Joining clubs is a great stress reliever and taking an hour or two from the week can definitely be beneficial. Overall, my experience so far is preparing me for what is to come.

Ashley

At Temple you will learn how to study. When I was in high school, it was not necessary that Is tudy in order to pass a test. Everything came easy to me. Here, nothing is that simple. If you do not study, you will not pass. Also, you learn time managment. I have classes in the morning, and I do work study in the afternoons. Because I was not up for studying after work, I had to find time in between classes and on the weekends to get work abd studying done. It actually turned out to be useful.

Christine

Being a college graduate, and now a graduate student has made me who I am today. I truly enjoy learning, and through my education, enjoy teaching. I feel I have been called to be a nurse; it is an amazing profession with so many opportunities for life-long growth and learning. I believe I am a positive influence on my children as a college graduate and as a woman pursuing a Master's Degree.

Erin

So far, my college experience is helping me to become a more well rounded individual. I'm taking classes that are outside of my comfort zone, so I can say that I have experience in a multitude of areas. The knowledge that I am gaining will be useful for the rest of my life, not only in my career, but also in my interactions and relations with both figures of authority and peers. I'm learning about myself as a person, and am beginning to see what I want to have as a priority in my life. Not only am I learning valuble school skills, but I'm learning how to be an independent, strong woman.

Braxton

My college experience has been invaluable. I am a film major, and a big part of the business is not just what you know but WHO you know. Being at college I've met friends that let me work on film sets, be a part of movies, and gain experience that a simple classroom would never be able to provide. I am gaining both knowledge, and essential experience. Outside of filmmaking, I also have interests in Asian studies, the Chinese language, creative writing, music, art. I could go on but I've only got 100 words left! I mean, if you want to be a well rounded person, college is most certainly the way to go.

Brittany

I have not yet attended college. I am enrolled to start Janurary 2011. I hope to obtain a higher level of education in order to pursue a career in nursing. I am very excited to be starting and also for the challenges that I will experience along the way. I hope that they not only advance my career but also help me to be a stronger person.

Elizabeth

College has presented to me many experiences, both joyful and painful. Through them, I have learned more about myself than I think I would have if I haven't left home. I've truly grown as a student within a classroom and as a person trying to find their own path in life. I'm afraid I wouldn't have gotten so much out of this past year and a half if I hadn't gone to Temple University. Temple has provided me with remarkable experiences that have helped me find the things I am most passionate about. I can only hope to gain more and more knowledge about my major of interest, and learn more about myself as I make my way towards graduation. College is hard... but not because the course work is challenging. It is because we are coming into our own and finding out what life is really about. I hope others have had the luck in finding that out for themselves as well.

stephanie

Temple University is primarily at commuter school. It is significantly less expensive than the other major schools in the city (Drexel and UPenn) and I felt that many of the students were working their way through their degrees themselves, rather than having them handed to them by parents and trust funds. This creates a very honest approach to learning, and promotes a strong sense of community between the student body and faculty, as everyone is wholeheartedly striving toward the same goal.

Elina

I am now smarter and more mature.

After graduating from high school, I was excited to go out and experience the college world and get my career started. Going to Santa Monica college I knew my passion was to go into Graphic Design. The various classes I took has strengthened my knowledge in my field, and classes were always enjoyable to attend because everyday I would leave the classroom feeling more knowledgable and accomplished. I learned the meaning of what Graphic Design is, how it works, and how to use the different applications that Graphic Designers use such as Photoshop and Illustrator. Being taught all of this made me love Graphic Design more and inspired me to learn about what more it has to offer. Santa Monica College has been valuable to attend because I usually had positive outcomes out everything I did, and the classes I took showed me how creative I can be, how talented I am, and helped motivate me to work hard independently on perfecting my passion.

I've only gotten three things out of my college experience. The first being the social experience, it's huge and you meet all kinds of people that are worth knowing. Second the education, we live in a society that you need a 4 year degree to do almost anything worth doing. Lastly you learn a few life lessons: Money gets you places but dont make it easyer, your GPA isnt a make or break and how much a school costs doesn't mean anything on how good a college is. The End

Richard

College for me was a bit of a disappointment. I expected to learn so much... I love to challenge myself. But my teachers were less than knowledgeable. They didn't understand their own subjects, and were thus unable to teach me very much. It's very disheartening to know more than your teacher. Also, my reason for attending National was that this particular school was supposed to help place you in your field. Another disappointment, I'm afraid.

My College exeprince has prepared me for my future medical career. It provides programs and organizations that allow students to create confidence in what they want as a career. For example, recently i am participating in the Biology Society and the American Medical Student Association. Both of these organizations provide community service opportunities such as volunteering in a clinic and academic help. Attending Temple Universtiy has changed my life. I have become an example to my family members and friends. I have shown them that no matter what when one wants to move on iin life, one can do it. Likewise, i know that with my degree I will be able to help my siblings get a better education. My goal is to help my parents ecomomically and give them a better future just the same way that they have fought and continue fighting everyday to help me with my education. So far, College has given me an academic and social experience that have made me a better person and a better citizen. Temple Unverstity has given me the opportunity to strive for a career to give my family and community a better future.

College for me is an opportunity to have dialogue and get acquainted with many different minds so that I may know differences better and respect them even more. The more I know other's differences the more I learn to appreciate what G-d has favored me with separately and the richer I will be in knowledge, human worth and even faith. My faith in who I am and who I strive to be has been improved through interaction and through educational dialogues at the table of the meeting of the minds. That is the most valuable experience in college and in life.

Blessing

I have gotten knowledge and skilsl that is helping me to navigate my way through life. I have also gained alot of confidence, because college has taught me that anything is possible if you put your mind to it. Everybody is smart, we just have to figure out how we learn. My college experience is valuable because without it I'd have been a no-body and a regular person, but with my years in college I can make something of my life.

Oye

My college experience has been fun because of the environment. The environment is so calm and it takes my mind off of my worries and also I love the people that I meet because they are down-to-earth.

Daniel

I have been able to learn how the real world works at my college. Because there are so many different people that attend my college, I can accepted into different areas of society from people who live in the ghetto to people who live a more privileged life. Even if I drop out and never see this school again, just from the different characters that I have met will be good enough for me to take into my future, where ever it may take me.

Hilary

I've gotten most of the things anyone would want from a college experience -- dedicated professors, irreplacable friends, and arts exposure under my belt. I'm involved in advocacy groups; I've been in shows; and I'm currently an assistant stage manager in a playwright festival. Yet I feel as though there's much more to my time here than meets the eye. The fact that I can perfect my craft of performing in an environment away from home still amazes me. If I hadn't gone away to college, I don't think I would have developed into the person that I am today -- a person I respect and value. Exposure to a new place helped me break free of old patterns. I think that asserting independence in an academic context is one of the best decisions a person can make. I'm so grateful that I submitted my enrollment form. That first step set a new era in my life in motion. Why not take the chance? Life is too short to not explore all possibilities.

alonna

I have gotten a lot out of my college experience so far. I have learned how to manage time better, have learned to commit to working out better, and have become very excited about being a student. It has been very valuable to attend because without college, I would have never been able to chase my dream of becoming an accountant. Being in school right now is crucial because I want to become a successful businesswoman as soon as I can. I already joined an organization that deals with aspects of accounting am ready to start applying to some internships to gain additional experience. College is a great resume builder because you meet a lot of people that are willing to help you throughout your college journey versus you being out of college and with little people to help you along your way. I am truely grateful for my family on their decision to put me through college and I will not disappoint them. I will make everyone in my life proud when I walk up the steps to receive my BBA in Accounting in less than four years, and until then, I will work hard to get there.

Jennifer

As a freshman, college has been incredible so far. Not only do you have more freedom than in high school, but you meet people who are sure to become your long time friends. You also have so much more freedom to express yourself and meet others with exactly the same interests as you. It is a comfortable way to break away from immaturity and start living like an adult.

While attending Temple University I have learned so much about myself and the world around me. Being a full-time student and a part-time worker I have learned the value of time management, something which I struggled with as a freshmen and sophmore. Along with time management I have also learned how to listen to my body, instead of studying through the night I allow myself to get adaquate rest and I tend to do better overall. Being a college student has also taught me how to manage my finances. Over the years I have had to take out numerous loans with very little scholarship money, leaving me to make minimum payments and intrest payments. All of the life lessons that I have learned throughout my college experience have prepared me for life after college, giving me confidence in maintaining a future family, career, and being an overall well rounded individual.

The ability of a living being to stand firm under distress and oppression, in a word, confidence has been gifted to me in college. Life on a university is by no means perfectly efficient. Perfect efficiency equals what gets put in, comes out. The same amount of energy that existed in the beginning continues in the same quantity after going through the machine. In college however, the results are sometimes completely different and higher than that which was first put into his allegorical engine of sorts. A figurative negative entropy change, something impossible in observable physics, will do good for the society and myself. The common reactants being time, money, and effort have all coalesced into something new. Unafraid to take risks, delve in and embrace something formerly uncomfortable is invaluable in life because it is something you will always need in order to face with joy its unpredictable ways. You can learn facts. You can learn numbers and job procedures. But that teaches you nothing of the nature of life. One must live it with an open hand, always giving, enjoying, rejoicing, prepared for the worst. Independant of circumstance, confidence gives the victorious learner a life to be discovered.

The most important and meaningful impact college had on me is the ability and skills to position myself to succeed. Being a research-based liberal arts university, Temple's coursework was built on a foundation of direction, rather than instruction. Professors gave me the information and access I needed to make my own discoveries and as well as a forum to discuss my evolving education. I feel that for a person to be great in his chosen field, he must have instilled in him the capacity and the desire to continually further his education. College should not be a means to an end, where in four years one considers himself completely educated and prepared to tackle any of life's challenges. College should serve as the foundation for a lifetime of learning and growing and acuiring skills. Temple provided me with that foundation, and that will always be the greatest and most lasting effect of my time there.

Jazmyne

I have realized my potential that I would be able to work in the field of International Business. I have been given an excellent foundation in my first year at Temple. Prior to my going to Temple, I met and spoke with a group of Alumni Students from Temple who provided a wealth of information and support to make sure myself and the other students succeed. I am excited about the opportunity that Temple offers for study abroad. This experience will definitely help me with my career choice. The prospect of winning your scholarship will also help me to cover the cost of my traveling to study abroad. I have also been able to work on campus as a Sports Photographer with the school newspaper, which is something that I enjoy and I'm also good at. I hope to take my skills and education that I'm receiving and parlay them together into a successful career in International Business, in which my final goal is to work as a coporate lawyer. My family is very supportive of me and my college experience and on campus support has been great. I look forward in the coming semester of success.

Dominique

College has taught me a lot knowledge wise and ethically. It has helped me grow to be much more independent and grounded as an individual, teaching me how to handle different issues on my own. It's helped me to balance school and work while still doing well in my classes and having a social life. I love my school's convenient location and all the opportunities it holds for me. It has surrounded me with friends and supportive administration to help guide me through my college journey. It has been a place to help me open up and reach for goals that I never thought of before coming here. It?s also opened my mind to new things and to an even better me. I love Temple University and the different memories it has given me already within these last two years.

Kenny

Out of my college experience i have gained a chance to to pursue my career with a better knowledge of the areas that will help that dream be successful and grow. College has been a valuable experence for many reasons one being able to pursue my dream career. The other reason is being able to gain a high education and not just stoping at the high school level.

Viviana

Being the first in my family to go to college, I felt that the opportunity itself was amazing. However, I can say that during my first year in college what I had truly gained out this experience was a new outlook on the worldly issues, as well as on my personal goals and life in general. An education is one that is meant to increase our knowledge in a variety of issues. Although personally, with the experiences I?ve had so far I have not only been able to gain that education, but also learn many things. In taking that knowledge and further analyze as well as apply that knowledge to other areas of life, giving me a new outlook and perspective on different issues. However I had also gained a new outlook on my personal goals and life in the sense that through interacting with different individuals I was able to expose myself to different environments and ideas. In all I feel that it has truly been valuable for me to attend because through out my current experience I?ve been able to grow so much as an individual due to the struggles I've overcome during this time.

Victoria

I have gotten so much out of my college experience and I have only been there a year. I have met amazing people and whenever we are together we have a great time. I expect there are many great times to come in the future. I have learned so much in college, not only in the classroom but life lessons outside of the classroom as well. People are not kidding when they say the learning doesn?t stop when you leave the classroom. There really is no experience that can compare to college. Sometimes the workload can be very demanding but that comes with my major, but I love every minute of it and wouldn?t want to be anywhere else.

Michelle

Getting into college period was a harder experience for me and other performing arts majors then it is for any other student. On top of maintaining good grades and having loads of extracurricular activities, we also have to audition to see if we even have a chance to be a part of the program. As a high school senior I had five different choices of colleges I was interested in attending and out of those five, I only got accepted into two. I had to choose between University of the Arts and Temple University and I was stuck. I ended up picking Temple University and now looking back at this choice, I know I made one of the best choices I could ever make. Being in college all together is a totally new experience that I am so happy to be a part of. I have met so many new people, a part of different organizations, learning so much in my classes, and I am fulfilling my dream to be a dancer in my future. I am so happy I chose Temple University and I know my next three years here are going to be as amazing as my first.

Jamie

My college experience at Temple University has changed my life. I went from a small high school to a large University. My professors made that transition easy and enjoyable. I have learned how to work in groups, coordinate plans, use resources such as online databases and our on campus library, study efficiently and balance my academic and social live. College has given me the oppertunity to become a more balanced individual. Besides classes required for my major I am able to take a wide variety of general education classes on very interesting topics. One can never be sure where life will go, so the more knowledge gained will always be valued.

Katrina

I have learned to be more of a grownup. I work full time and attend school full time all while living on my own and trying to support myself. School has been an on again off again experience for me as I try to work my way through school, and this responsibility has allowed me to appreciate the time I have in class. I value my education because I will one day become a doctor thanks to the education I worked so hard for.

Kara

My college experience has been rewarding to say the least. Temple helps you turn your passion into your career. They help students get interships which are a great help.

Dimple

Out of college experience, I have realized that studying is very important to progressing to my future career. I feel as if they prepare us for graduate school even though we feel it is harder than it needs to be. With the education that I have experienced from this school has made me realize that Pharmacy is the major I really want to get into. Even though it has been difficult, I have been encouraged to push through school with the best of my ability to become the pharmacist that I always wanted to be. The material and ways of being taugh has shown me the importance of my education for my future career. I feel it has been very valuable for my future.

Carissa

My college experience at Temple University was very rewarding and prepared me very well for a career within the biological sciences. During my studies at Temple, I was accepted to receive a National Science Foundation Undergraduate Research Award to perform research at the American Museum of Natural History. This opportunity provided an excellent stepping stone for my aspirations of pursuing a graduate degree in Marine Biology at San Francisco State University. The biology department's course in Tropical Marine Biology inspired me to continue my studies beyond my bachelors degree. At Temple, I learned about the organisms that I plan on conducting research on for my graduate work. The encouragement and praise that I received from my fellow professors motivated me to work harder and pursue my dreams of becoming a well respected scientist within academia. Since graduating Temple, I have had two jobs within the field of conservation and ecology. Upon graduating Temple, I was offered a Conservation Fellowship to work for the Bureau of Land Management to conduct wildlife habitat assessments. After completing that, I began working for the Great Basin Institute with their Nevada Conservation Corps (Americorps) volunteering to perform conservation work across the state of Nevada.

I have learned many useful qualities while attending college, such as managing time, being social, study habits, and being responsible. I have become much more responsible and have learned what it means to be independent. I have to solve my own problems with out my parents help and make my own decisions about everything. I have also learned a lot of great information in my classes but I have learned the most by making my own choices. It has not be easy but I am prepareing for the rest of my life and that makes it all worth it. Thank you for your time. Samantha Nava

Aside from being given an outstanding education, the most significant experience that I have attained from attending Temple University is the ability to be culturally competent and ethnically responsible. One of the fundamental roles that attending college plays on an individual's life is the guide through the transitionary period between adolescence and adulthood. College, for me, has been the most crucial developmental period of my life. What sets it aside from my previous life experiences is the fact that I have recognized my place in society. I realize, now, that it is my civic duty to use my abilities in such a way that benefits society. Before embarking on my journey into academia, I was unaware of how important being culturally competent and ethnically responsible is in modern society. Attending college prepares one to enter society and the workforce. Recognizing that the framework of our society is built on diversity gives me the advantage of understanding the true merit of an individual. This insight has given me one of the quintessential tools necessary to productively integrate my abilities into society. Without attending Temple University, and it's diverse student body, I may not have endured this invaluable experience.

I have gained so much from my college experience thus far. I have developed close relationships with many of my professors, which has provided me not only with networking connections but also with a strong sense of support and encouragement. Individuality and creativity are strongly encouraged at Temple, which is one of the things that I love most about the school. Although I am an undergraduate student, I have been able to build my own research topic and work on it throughout each semester by utilizing the tools and assignments provided by my professors. I have been thoroughly pleased with the faculty at Temple and I feel that they are truly invested in my education and future. If I had to describe my experience so far in just one word, I would definitely have to say "gratifying".
