The University of Tennessee-Knoxville Top Questions

Is the stereotype of students at your school accurate?

Gene

For the most part, I wouldn't say that was a false stereotype. UTK definitely has a lot of students that are habitual drinkers. On game days especially, UTK as a whole is an extremely drunken campus from 8 in the morning until about 2 in the morning of the next day. Whenever I have friends come visit from Ole Miss and Alabama, they can hardly keep up with the party scene here at UTK. However, most of those people are still able to get their work done and maintain high GPAs.

Jenna

no not at all

Meredith

yes for the most part

Caitlin

Not at all! I've leaned a lot here at UT...in CLASSES, not at parties. Given we DO make a big deal about our football and basketball teams, but who wouldn't? We have a national championship legacy in women's basketball! Anyone would be overly proud about that!

Liz

no! i love ut...and our academics are improving every year...i think we just get bad press...

amy

yes

Adrian

Although UTK may be BIG into football we are still very focused on academincs. Greek life people may be paying to be in a sorority or fraternity but we are not "buying" our friends.

Natalie

there is a vast majority of kids that come from well off and conservative families

Suzanne

yes, it is very sports-oriented...not so much southern- there is a lot of diversity.

Danielle

There are always people that come here just for those reasons and try to live up to the stereotype, but overall it's not true at all. While there are so many opportunities here and you probably could go out and find something to do every night, not everyone is that irresponsible and a lot of people are here for school as their priority. There will always be that stereotypical person, but at UTK, there is such a diverse population that this is definetaly not true of all of Knoxville's students.

Courtney

NO! We have a very diverse campus.

Amy

A lot of people party, but at the same time the classes are tough and most people I know don't let the partying get out of control and make good grades.

Jenny

Not really! A good portion of school, but not everyone.

Andy

This of course is very false. I have met some of the most intelligent and motivated people at UTK.

Alex

No. Just because I am in a sorority does not mean that I do not know what the real world is about. It just means that I was coming to a big school and wanted to get involved with a smaller group to meet people and do something other than jsut school. And, just because sports are a big thing at our school, when you look around, more people do not care about it than do.

Alex

No. I feel we do have a very diverse campus. I feel a certain percentage of students party often, but a mass majority of students realize why they are here and make education their main priority.

Taylor

No, I've actually met a lot of people that don't

Jordan

yes some are and some are not

ali

for some students yes but i will say that utk parties alot more than other universities

Samantha

yes there is a large group of those stereotypes

Brittney

No not at all

Abby

not entirely

Brooke

sometimes the party, but you have to be smart to get in here.

Alexandra

No, there is a lot more to UTK that just partying. There is awesome school pride and we have many intelligent students who study a lot!

Kathleen

yes and no

Jess

no, they're are very challenging course, I chose UTK because I found classes just as difficult as those at Vanderbilt University only with scholarship money given. I'm a greek so I'm slightly biased, but yes, if you're not a Greek you pretty much go unnoticed

Laura

Somewhat.

KJ

sometimes

Paige

no!

Lee

to some extent

Stephanie

I mean of course some people are that way but i dont feel that enough people feel that way to make it acceptable to generalize the entire UTK campus

taylor

somewhat

Chelsey

I think that the stereotypes are more true than not.

Kelsey

yes these are to an extent

Robin

As with the organization I am involved with, I am surrounded by a lot of volunteers. Yet for the majority of students I don't think this is so true. Again, depending on who you associate with, depends on the atmosphere. But with any college there will be a party

Brittney

usually

Carson

Students are appreciative of our orange and white colors and we like to have a good time, but come to UT to get an education, granted not all departments guide their students as well as they should. It is not easy to get into UT...not at all.

Meghann

I would say it can and can't be accurate. I won't say that people don't party because there definitely are plenty of people that do, but out the 30,000 people that go here there are plenty of people that also do not party.

Bethany

No

Andy

yes

courtney

for the majority, no. But I know a few who fit the description

Dawson

sometimes

Emily

Some of them are. I think the "Big Orange Screw" is the most accurate. For example, I am completely done with my major and I still have a whole year of general education requirements left to complete. The freshmen 15 is also an accurate stereotype, but I think that is true for any college.

Lauren

No we are not rednecks but yes we do party. alot.

Elizabeth

Knoxville is a dirty city, but the students are not dirty. It is getting harder and harder to get into UTK every year.

Holly

Large greek system is

stacy

no

Lauren

I think so

Alex

No, there are not, that are a great number of students who were not born in south enrolled at UT

chelsea

yes, we party a good amount and the student body really does stick to their own "groups"
