The University of Texas at Austin Top Questions

Describe the students at your school.

Samantha

MY classmates are diverse but very intelligent.

Josie

My classmates vary greatly of course from class to class, but for the most part they are socially amicable people with interesting life stories, goals and achievements which you get to hear if YOU make the effort of starting up some sort of conversation.

Stacey

My classes are usually very large, but the classmates that I have met are always very nice and ready to help me out. I am a Pre-Med, so all of the other Pre-Meds feel my pain. We are always there to help each other out in times of need.

Isa

Hung-over. Busy.

Stefen

I am gay and I think the LGBT make to big a deal of being gay.

Morgan

The student body at UT is as about as diverse as they come. Here you will be exposed to a wide variety of opinions and backgrounds from students that have come from all over the world and have lived in almost every situation imaginable. There are countless special interest groups (from student government to religion to comedy groups) for you to participate in, not to mention all of the cultural festivals that take place throughout the year. If you truly want to broaden your world view, this is definitely a good place to come.

Tate

UT is such an open-minded school with different organizations for just about every ethnicity, religion, and race. We also have a very active LGBTQ community that has forums and events throughout the year. I honestly don't think that it's possible to not fit somewhere on our campus. With a school of about 50,000 students the possibilities and friendships that you make are endless. Most students are from Texas, just like any other public school in other states. However, we do have an organization called the Out-of-State Students Association that many out-of-state students are a member of. UT is also a politically active school, especially since we are located in the state capitol. We have the Texas Conservatives and University Democrats, that hold forums and debates and do a great deal of work with not only local politicians but members of the Texas Legislature as well. They also host vote-a-thons on campus, like the primaries that took place earlier this year.

Bevan

UT is a hugely diverse college. We have the benefit to having a wide scope of people and there are people of all groups. Students that would feel out of place might be people that are unaccustomed to a lot of people or a city environment. If you are open to different ideas, you will be able to find your niche. I will say that the majority of people are from Texas, especially Houston. Oh, and people tend to be more political because we are right next to the capital.

Brandon

Most everyone from UT is from Dallas or Houston with some samplings from almost everywhere else.

Robin

I love the fact that UT is so diverse and welcoming to all sorts of organizations on campus. From my experience, students go very casual to class (t-shirt, shorts, flipflops, maybe even pajama pants). Though UT is very diverse, I have noticed that for the most part, the different races don't interact as much with each other. Latinos usually stick to each other, as do African Americans, Asians, and most Whites. Being politically aware and active in student/government issues, I have come across a lot of students who are extremely involved (and find most of the ones at UT predominantly left). That being said, i wouldn't conclude that the majority of students care/are involved with these sort of issues.

Kristen

One thing I love about the UT Student Body as a whole is how laid back they are. Students wear shorts, t-shirts and flip flops to class and I think thats awesome

Alex

I love the fact that UT is so diverse. There are people from all over the world, with all different types of backgrounds. Although there seems to be distinct racial groupings, mostly everyone seems to get along.

Rachel

The student body is very diverse. most of the popluation is students from around texas. there are also a large number of people from other countries. i dont think any one person would feel out of place on campus at ut. the school is so large you can find any kind of group to fit in with.

Kristen

so big

Marissa

I think the UT student body is open-minded and tolerant for the most part. However, I find that the UT student body is very much racially segregated. I think there need to be more opportunities to facilitate integration.

Chelsea

I think our student body may be ahead of many other schools in recognizing and reaching out to or providing resources for underrepresented student groups. We lag behind some other schools, but are moving way up, which is admirable in such a conservative state. The financial backgrounds vary sooo much. Many students here went to schools in which they were the only ones to go to college. Others own seven houses around the world. Students here are very politically active. Those that sway to the left have a more active presense on campus.

Mike

The UT student body is very diverse. Everyone really gets along once they're able to get accustomed to the diversity. You have a mix of so many people from so many different backgrounds.

Carol

Lots of asians but the greek system is great and conservative.

sam

i wear tshirt and shorts everyday and wouldnt have it any other way. i think people who dress up look out of place. and i think the rest of the student body enjoys being casual as well. i like that i do know a lot of people from out of state as well as from all different parts of texas that i have never been to.

Kelly

Quite a handfull of people are racist towards hispanics, specially Mexicans. I understand that there are a lot of Mexicans here in Texas, but the atittude towards them is pretty demeaning. Most of the studenty body is Texan, given that UT is a public university. From what I see most of the Texans like to be in frats and dress according to their typcial dress code. The kaki shorts and the polo shirt and sandals or the brown shoes (dont remember their name) without socks. There is still a lot of interaction between cultures, races, etc. The diversity is so big that it is impossible not to interact with everyone.

liz

I know people think UT is very diverse, and it is compared to other major Southern UNiversities, but we still have inequalities in minority acceptance. Most UT students are from major TExas cities like Houston and Dallas. I think a lot of students have diverse interests, as can be seen in West Mall. At UT, there's always someone who cares about something whether it be law, cruelty to animals, social groups, religion, or politics.

Lindsey

I think that UT is a pretty open campus, and most people that go to UT are accepting of all different types of people. I think that between all the different classes that UT offers for different religions and races, it is hard to be too racial here.

Regina

Ut is generally diverse. There is an over representation of Asians. I don't think anyone would feel out of place here. Students typically wear t-shirts and jeans or shorts. A lot of times students wear work-out clothes to class and flip flops. I think human nature pairs us with people who look like ourselves. but there is the opportunity to interact with people unlike ourselves. I would say at least one of the table has people that look all the same while the others have a large range of diversity from gender to ethnicity to style. most UT students are from texas, dallas and houston to be specific. All kind of financial backgrounds exist. However I will say that the more wealthy students tend to migrate towards greek life. Students at UT are definitely to the left. Austin is often known as a spec of blue in a sea of red. There are a lot politically active students involved in immigration rallies and what not. But at the same time just like anywhere else there is a great deal of apathy. Money is definitely a factor. As a liberal arts student we mainly joke about how we won't have money and how engineers get money thrown at them

Abby

I feel that all student groups are welcome at UT. Austin itself is a very friendly city and encompasses a range of people, from the most conservative to the most openly liberal, and has both wealthy and poor inhabitants. Most students wear casual clothes to class, but often students in the business school are required to wear professional attire, so suits and button down shirts are not an uncommon sight. Most UT students are from Texas, either the Houston or Dallas area. There is not really one group that prevails though. The population is so large that there are well established communities for almost any and every identity. Some students talk about how much they'll earn, others how they want to save the world, and still others how much they never want to leave.

Lindsay

I think it is great that there is such a variety of different cultural groups on campus. Unfortunately, I have not taken the opportunity to join one. I think it is easy for any type of student to feel out of place at UT. It can be overwhelming coming into a new college not knowing a lot of people. This is why I feel the importance of getting involved in at least one thing to meet new people and network.

Blake

There are so many people here so no matter what kind of people you like to hang out with, you can find someone at UT.

Albert

The female students have excellent student bodies. :)

Mitchell

UT's student body is dynamic. While, there is a lack of diversity in the sense of the numbers of different ethnicities, there are individuals from all walks of life. I feel like the vast array of different individuals that make up UT's student body has prepared me for the world.

Blake

No students would feel out of place here--the diversity is somewhat varied and everyone just blends in. When it comes to someone out of the norm, it isn't really noticed or cared about. There are many awkward, silly, or different students that that has become normal to an extent. Most students are wealthy, politically aware, and you hear more from the liberals.

Emily

could be more diverse in my opinion, and i wish we all connected more.. but this is college

Harper

The student body is great. Not one interest group seems left out.

Kendall

The student body is very diverse and has people from all walks of life and socioeconomic backgrounds.

peter

Very diverse, small percent of greek students.

GrantH

There are all different types of people here at UT. I exposed to tons of them every day. Students from all financial backgrounds make their respective voices heard in different ways. Most students wear t-shirts and shorts/jeans to class. An outerspace alien may feel out of place here at UT, but that is about it.

Dylan

One thing about UT is that it is very diverse. There are people from every different background. From my experience most people around UT are very nice and receptive to others, and as long as you show respect to other people it will be returned to you. It is hard for me to think of a type of person that wouldn't be able to fit in at UT. There are so many different clubs and organizations that if you even put in a little bit of effort you can find something that you enjoy. Students do talk about their future jobs and political views, but not overwhelmingly.

craig

I think that anyone could find a place at UT. There are a lot of different organizations and activities that anyone could find interesting.

Jonathan

There are many minority groups on campus that people can join. Most students are open to talk to anyone. Students are well balanced leaning right and left.

Scott

It is very diverse and open minded

Josh

There has been a lot of controversy lately with race and quota filling in admissions.

Alex

UT 's student body is very diverse. No one would feel out of place at UT. As I mentioned earlier, anyone can find their niche. Not only are there niches but those niches interact everyday.

Brett

We have a good student body but for the most part I only know people in Greek community. However I think just about any person can find a group they feel like they belong to.

Blake

-with 60,000 students there is a niche for any kind of person -might be overwhelming to try and find it but at least you have the confidence of knowing it exists

Ryan

One word - Diverse. Very cliche, but true. People don't truly enjoy or appreciate the diversity at UT until a couple years into college. I know I didn't care one way or another at first, but I've come to love the diverse nature of UT.

Alex

I dont know how anyone can feel out of place here because there are so many cultures here intermixing.

Zach

I do no think any type of student could feel out of place here socially. There are so many student groups here that there is bound to be one for everyone. In class, people wear a variety of things. People in fraternities and sororities wear their shirts a lot. Other people wear boots and jeans a lot. In the business school, it is very common to see people in a suit because they might have an interview or presentation that day. Most people here are from Texas coming from very diverse financial backgrounds. A lot of people are politically active with most active groups seeming to be left.

Devin

The student body is pretty diverse.

zack

No one could possibly feel left out at UT - it is very diverse, warm, and welcoming. Different types of students interact all the time, be it at a party or two different organizations hosting a party together.

Torry

The student body has a pretty diverse mixture of races, religions, and backgrounds.

Jerry

The students are all very different and for the most part open minded and willing to meet new people.

Rebecca

If you ask people where they are from, most people say Dallas or Houston. But there are peope from all over. 95{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of students are from Texas, however, being an out of state student, I know a large amount of people from other states. The school can be segregated by race. Even greek life has 5 councils dedicated to the different races and ethnicities. But, I think that many organizations are trying to integrate campus more and promote diversity within UT.
