What are the most popular student activities/groups?

Alex

The most popular athletic team is probably soccer. They are REALLY attractive. I am in a sorority and I love it. It's a great way to meet people and have a great time outside of school. Athletic events are pretty popular but not necessary. The dance program here is very good. The dating scene is a little iffy. I have plenty of friends who have found attractive, smart boyfriends/ girlfriends here but for some reason I just feel like all anyone wants to do is get really drunk and hook up. I havnt found anyone too interested in dating.

Alex

people hangout mostly with the people who they live with/near.

courtney

i am in a sorority, however i make a huge point of keeping friends outside of greek life alone. therefore i have many friends not in the greek scene and they all always have things to do, drinking or not. if im awake at 2AM i am usually out. if i dont go out i like to go to bed on the earlier side. i dont go off campus very often because i dont have a car, but my roommate has a car and she goes downtown a lot to see ballets or movies or etc...

Alex

The greek system is pretty prevalent on campus. it is definitely not necessary to be in the greek system but for me it has been a very fun and rewarding experience. Athletic events are popular, but sometimes I do wish we had a football team to boost the school spirit a little more. tailgating would be really fun. i met my best friends in the dorms and in my pledge class in my sorority. the dorms are so much fun and i was so sad to leave them freshman year. you form great relationships because you do everything with your dorm friends - eat every meal together, bike to class, play frisbee or beach volleyball, go to parties, etc. it is important to try to maintain your dorm relationships because everyone may live apart sophomore year. everyone still has their "freshman year friends." floatopia is one of the greatest events at our school! everyone goes down to the beach and takes out dozens of rafts and water trampolines into the middle of the ocean. i've never seen the beach so packed except for maybe 4th of july. events like these that attract the whole isla vista community are so much fun and great ways to meet people you have never seen before!

Christine

Some of the best things after partying: Food- Super Cucas, Rosaritos and in the day Sam to-go is the best drinking spot. Frats are almost always having some sort of event, big or small they are always a place to hang. Del Playa is awesome and strolling down the street can be an adventure in itself on a Friday night. Fun things to see are the philanthropy sporting competitions, going to catch a movie at the IV theatre, venturing to the beach on any warm day and heading to State street for a good selection of shops and food.

lydia

The greek system has grown immensely in the past couple of years. There are many different houses so it's easy to find one that fits with you. On saturday night most people drink. They show free movies at the campus theater. People party a few times a week i would say. Dating scene is sketchy...too many good looking people.

Corey

Soccer is big at our school, since we have a strong program and were recently national champions. Basketball is also prominent in the Big West league. I work at the Daily Nexus, the student newspaper, and it's a great way to network. On any given night, there is probably a raging party somewhere in Isla Vista, Monday thru Sunday. On Friday and Saturday night on Del Playa, there is a solid mile of people crowding the streets transitting to the next party, you see a lot of crazy shit. The streets are blasting with music, issuing from every few residences, but recently the police have cracked down and have become more stringent about noise violations after midnight. For 21+, there is a service called Bill's Bus that shuttles people from Isla Vista to State St. in downtown Santa Barbara where many choose to hit the bars. This is a big drinking school, so it tends to dominate most of the social life. There are free movie nights and performances offered by the school as well.

Katherine

Being involved in the greek system is incredible, and I've developed some of my best friends through my sorority. I always left my door open in the dorms when I lived in FT, and i gained so many friends and fun experiences.

Amy

I am on the UCSB crew team but we don't get much recognition because we are a club sport and practice at Lake Cachuma which is about 30 miles from campus. We don't have a football team which is nice because I don't need anymore jocks getting priority registration in front of me just because my sport (rowing) isn't officially recognized by the school. Soccer is definitely the most popular sport/team on campus, especially since the team won the national championship last year. Fraternities and sororities are as popular as ever. Hooray.

Jennifer

Being that I'm in the greek system, I would say the greek system in general is a prominent organization on campus. I absolutely love the greek system. It makes such a large campus seem smaller, which I really enjoy since I went to a very small all girls school for high school. It's nice to walk around campus and see several familiar faces.

Marie

I myself am in Alpha Phi at UCSB. One of the best things i have been a part of i love it andall the girls in the house. Greek life is a great way to meet people with similar interests and meet life long friends. Although i am greek, it is not my whole life as with most greeks at UCSB. Because UCSb is so social it is very easy to have a busy social life without being greek. Many people leave their doors open and i have not heard much about theft. Very big about soccer!!!Gaucho Locos are crazy at soccer and basketball! There is such a wide variety of clubs and organizations to join, anything you can think of i can almost guarantee we have something invovling it. Something that has stuck with me is that it is great sometimes that UCSB is a party school because it is that much easier to stay in. You will never really miss that sinlge big party because there will always be something the next night. Dating scene is really based on hook ups, hard to have a steady relationship in the first couple of years. Long distance seems even harder here.

Rebecca

The Greek systems is increasing in popularity and size on the UCSB campus. While only around 11{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the student population before, its numbers have reached 15{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} and are climbing. I am a member of the Alpha Phi Sorority, which a top-ranked sorority on campus. Students in the dorms generally leave their doors open and unlocked. The environment is very safe and friendly. Athletic events are moderately attended, going back to the minimal school spirit of the school. However, when the soccer team does well, people will often come out...maybe. If you are awake at 2am on a Tuesday night you are either coming back from Q's downtown (if you're 21), studying, or usually...drinking.

Alexandra

The Greek system is a small population on campus, I believe around 15{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c}, but I would like to think we're pretty well known. Our philanthropies are attended by many none Greeks and we invite everyone to join! The Soccer Team and Surf Teams I would say are pretty popular, as well as Volley Ball, Lacrosse, and Basketball. The dorms are a great experience and every Freshman should take advantage of them. I met two of my best friends and sisters in the dorms and many other great people who I still keep in contact with while living in Isla Vista. Some traditional events that happen each year would be Floatopia, Halloween of course, Earth Day, and Sorority and Fraternity Rush. Signs are posted all over campus when big events happen so everyone is aware of it. If students are concerned about having a good time and not drinking, there are always great restaurants in IV and movie rentals for a quiet night. There is a movie theater, and a Borders near by. A bowling alley is right off the freeway, and state street with shopping, more restaurants and more movie theaters is about a 15 minute drive away! Its pretty easy to snuggle up with friends and watch movies, it isn't all about going out and getting crazy. But for those that choose to live the on the go lifestyle, I would say 5 out of 7 days someone could always find something to do.

alexa

Theres always something going on somewhere at anytime - so there's no excuse to sit at home on the couch with nothing to do!

Carson

Join the greek system!!!! Growing up biased negatively toward the greek system, I can say first and foremost to keep an open mind. Going Greek i is by far the best experience hands down. I joined Alpha Phi my freshman year, and I am absolutely in love it. I am thrilled to be a part of a greater whole because of all the values Alpha Phi stands for. And of course, I have met my best friends who would do absolutely anything for me. It is a great feeling to know that if anything goes wrong in my life (and believe me, college throws a lot of curveballs at you), I have 120 girls beside my side. The dating scene is, well, nonexistent. Guys have definitely been lazy in that area, so girls, bring up the standard. You won't find much people doing anything besides drinking on a Saturday, but when I want down time, me and my girls go out to a movie and fro yo.

Blake

The greek community is a decent size here, but it is not as crucial for a social life unlike other schools. I am in Associated Students, it is cool but it is really hostile because many different backgrounds clash. I think people are too busy partying to care about athletics. The dating scene is mostly casual hook-ups, which sucks. University of Casual Sex and Beer. I met my closest friends through my sorority, AXO. People party everyday here, it's kind of a huge problem.

Jess

The group I am most familiar with is the Greek Life ucsb offers here. I am apart of a sorority on campus and that is how I choose to invest most of my time. I make it a big part of my life and find all of my closest friends and social events in the Greek System.

Katie

Social life is what UCSB is all about and the majority of students who come here know this and are open to it. In the dorms, everyone is friendly with doors open and big groups of freshmen are often seen roaming the streets of IV together trying to find a party (be careful when doing this because you WILL get water ballooned) There are 10 sororities and 10 Fraternities on campus that are recognized by panhellenic. Rush is usually the first week of fall quarter.

Jamie

I love being a part of greek life. It made the transition so much easier. Although greek life isn't a huge {4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of UCSB social life, when you are apart of it it feels huge. The stereotype that comes with this is lots of drinking, but not at all. I spend so many times just sitting in the dining commons with my sisters & our friends in other sororities & fraternities or doing the community service hours. I have some friends that do not even drink yet still have a great time at events & have just as many friends. UCSB associated students also plans tons of activities, you just have to be proactive about getting involved.

Michelle

Dorms are a great place to meet your closest friends over the next 4 years. My RA (Resident Assistant) was amazing, and I consider her a great friend. Everyone gets really close, and it's great to live in a co-ed dorm, so you can make good friends of the opposite sex too as opposed to just meeting them when you're out partying. It's really easy to get involved in things. I did Mock Trial this past year and we went to Nationals. Everyone was really friendly and helpful. Our coaches are from the DA's office. It's a great way to get know faculty and meet mentors. I was interested in getting involved in Model UN and so I Facebooked someone I saw in the paper and invited me to a meeting that night. I'm also in a sorority. Only 8{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the student population is Greek and we always get the stereotypes. However, there's so much to get involved, so many people to meet, and so much to do! It's awesome. You can definitely find that smaller community feel. Our sorority just teamed up with a bootcamp workout company to come to us to work out. We wouldn't have that opportunity if we weren't in a house.

Jordan

I think fraternities and sororities are one of the most important part of social life. This is where I met most of my friends, where all the parties are too.

Olivia

The Greek system is a great way to make friends. Even though only about 8{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of campus participates in the Greek system, there still are so many people to get to know. Greek life is also a great way to network in the future when you're out of college. Students do leave there dorms and go to other ones or go to Isla Vista (I.V.) One thing you'll learn about UCSB is everything has a mini-name (whatever that's called) for their actual name. Isla Vista is IV, Del Playa is DP, and all the buildings around campus have that too, i.e., Humanities and Social Sciences Building is HSSB. If you don't want to join a sorority or frat., which I advise you give a try, there are tons of clubs to get involved with too.

Jessica

The Greek System is a popular organization that many people are involved in. Most students in dorms do not leave their dorms open. I met my closest friends through my sorority, who I hang out whenever I have free time. Last weekend I went out into IV and hung out at my friends house and went to some fraternities.

Brittany

the most fun thing to do is be in a frat or sorority if you want to have a good time doing philanthropy and partying and just hanging out

Andy

Go Greek! Or at least try it! Although this social scene isn't for everyone (and not even for me anymore), but joining a Greek organization is without a doubt the single best thing I've ever done in college (second only to coming to UCSB). Within a few months, I had hundreds of friends and phone numbers. Many of my closest friends are also Greek, but are not in my house. Joining the Greek system introduced me to life-long friends, and as such, I have nothing but good things to say about the Greek system. But be warned, the Greek system centers on alcohol. I did not drink in high school, but I got way out of control in college. There is a lot of peer pressure to drink, but that isn't to say that you HAVE to drink. I personally know members of the Greek system (both within and outside of my house) who don't participate. These members are not judged or scorned, but many have a tough time understanding their stance.

Christina

Because I'm so involved with Greek life, it's my main form of socializing! You meet great people in the Greek system who are so much fun and I've made my closest friends through it! Being in a sorority, you always have something to do and people you can count on. The dorms are also a great way to meet people. I've met some great guy friends on my floor who will probably stay my close friends throughout my four years here! You don't have to drink to have fun though! You can always find a group of people who are willing to watch a movie with you on a Saturday night or go bowling or see a movie at IV theater!

Owen

I am in the greek system here and I looooove it. Even though the percentage of people in it isnt huge, it definitely has a presence on campus. UCSB isn't the best school to go to if you're looking for a boyfriend or girlfriend. People here are pretty into the random hook up scene and not being tied down. I guess I understand it, I mean there is a ridiculous amount of good looking people here.

Laura

Plenty of sports or activities you can join. Costs are around 50 dollars a quarter which isn't too bad. The Greek system is nice but you don't have to be in it to have a great social life. Dating scene kinda sucks since there are plenty of pretty girls and boys around and no one wants to settle. There are a few nice guys but most are just trying to get in your pants, sorry. I feel like that is similar in every college environment though. If your not much of a partier there are always movies playing in IV theater or Arts and Lecture events you can attend. Downtown if perfect once you are 21, there are a variety of clubs and everyone goes Thursday night. Soo much fun!

Andy

Social life seems to happen mainly in IV. All the Greek houses are in IV, all the parties are in IV, Magic lantern films are shown in IV. While people do go to on campus shows, theater or dance performances, or music performances, these are usually because they are required for a class that people are taking to fulfill a GE. I think students really come together in the fall for soccer games with our very proud Gaucho Loco section.

Sasha

Many students leave their doors open, but I do come from a very close floor - I'm sure not all the dorms are like this. Athletic events are only really popular when the sport is popular or when the game is crucial. So far, I've been to a few baseball games, almost all home soccer games, and zero basketball games, though I know a lot of people who've gone. If you wanted to, you could probably something to do almost every night of the week. To not involve drinking on a Saturday night, you could go out but not drink, go to a friend's place and watch movies, go to one of the Hub's dances (the school puts them on sometimes), etc. If you're off campus, you're probably in downtown Santa Barbara, which really is cute, or else you're taking a drive to L.A. or something. Santa Barbara's small, but it's a good bubble. :)

Sara

Greek life is getting pretty big here. People are into our soccer and basketball games, and some of our water polo games. I am involved in ADPi, so our greek system. UCSB greek system is great, everyone is close, its getting big, but it is still small enough that we are all friends.

Brittany

The most popular groups on campus mainly are within the Greek system. I personally, am a member of one of the 10 esteemed sororities on UCSB's campus. People are very friendly and welcoming in the Greek system. Athletic events are very popular, at least in my eyes. I love attending them and showing my school spirit. I personally am dating someone who goes to Cal Poly Slo, so the dating scene has never really been integrated within my stay here in Santa Barbara. If I am awake on a 2am on a Tuesday, I am normally either studying, hanging out with friends, or on the computer (like I am right now haha). Last weekend, I actually went to visit my boyfriend in Slo, and it was actually my birthday weekend, so I had a lot of fun up there, visiting old friends.

Jennifer

frats and sororities are awesome but not necessary. other kids drink and have fun too and there is definitely some mingling. people drink anywhere from 0 nights a week to 7. in the greek system though i would say people average anywhere from 3-5. dating scene is a little tricky as a lot of guys think they can just get you drunk, fuck you and bounce in the morning. But there are definitely great guys out there, just look. For those who don't drink there are always movies playing and improvability which is funny as hell. and during the day ppl bum around iv, go to the beach, and a lot go to state street.

Laura

People party a lot. Possibly too much. Downtown is too far away to get the motivation to go down there. I wish there was more of a club nightlife closer by.

Leah

Partying is a big deal here. On any given night you can pretty much find some party to go to, even if it is just a few people drinking or smoking. The greek system isn't that important, but it is a good way to meet people for those that are interested. Dating is very limited, espeically in the greek system. People are more interested in hooking up then dating.

Andy

greek life is strong, but not essential. people party every night of the week, but not everyone parties all the time. soccer is popular but no other athletics have a strong following. guest speakers and theaters are GREAT. dating is comprised of casual hookups or serious relationships. there's really no in between.

Ryan

I am involved in a sorority here on campus, and I absolutely love it. Although one need not be involved in the Greek system to find fun on any given night of the week, I find it a great experience. Many people are in the Greek system, but many more are involved in countless other activities. What I enjoy is that the Greeks who I know do not discriminate against non-Greeks or deem them "not as good;" I am friends with non-Greeks as well as Greeks. Every night of the week is pretty different for me, and I can be found doing anything from spending all night in the library, turning in early, or partying until the wee hours of morning when I have to wake up for class soon. People here party often, but it's really up to the individual. Some traditions and events include Floatopia and recently the Undie Run, as well as throwing tortillas on the soccer field during games. The dorms are great. I love my floor and everyone is very friendly. I play intramural soccer with my hall mates and it's alot of fun. People here leave there doors open and unlocked many times, and I feel I can totally trust my neighbors. Plus my RA is awesome.

Vanessa

Joining the Greek system is not necessary to have a good time here, but i highly reccommend it. People party regardless, but the greek system offers so much more. also, probably because it is a beach town, people work out a lot here and the gym is usually really crowded.

Tate

Most of the social activities here center around partying. There is a party to go to every night if you so choose, but you can also choose not to drink. It is rare to find people that do not drink and go out, but I have met a few. Greek life is pretty significant; 10{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the student body is involved in Greek life.

Lauren

I do not really know what the most popular groups on campus are. For me, the most popular is the Greek system, but that is only because I am a part of it and almost all of my social events are associated with Greeks. I am involved with the sorority Alpha Delta Pi. It has been one of the best decisions I have made. I have met so many good girls and made so many close friends through the sorority. It was an amazing way to meet people fast and form friendships when the college experience seemed intimidating. Students did leave their doors open a lot in the beginning of the year to make friends and meet new people, but as the year progressed the doors stay closed but unlocked. Soccer is the most popular athletic event along with basketball. Besides that sports is not too big a part of our campus. The dating scene at UCSB is pretty much non-existent. I do not know if it is due to being Greek, but it seems as though the dating scene consists of just "hooking up." I met my closest friends on my floor and through my sorority. At 2am on a Tuesday, I am usually in my room on my computer or watching a movie. Floatopia is an event that occurs each year on campus. It is where a bunch of people go down to the beach and hang out and swim for the entire day. People party a lot here. Usually every day of the weekend and some weekdays. Frats and sororities are only 10{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the campus social life, but being involved with them it is a huge part of my life here. Last weekend, i went to a frat both nights, drank, and then watched a movie with my sorority sisters. If you do not want to drink on a Saturday night going down to State Street for shopping dinner and a movie can be extremely fun.

Vanessa

I think that the Greek system is one of the most popular groups, but that's because I'm a part of it. Sorority life is great. Besides from all the stereotypical partying that goes on, there's a lot more to it. You can really find a group of friends that you can trust and know will be there for the rest of your life. Students used to leave their doors open at the beginning of the school year but after about a month, doors closed. There really isn't a big dating scene. People kind of just let to go out and hang with new people. Usually I'm lying in bed chatting on instant messenger to my best friend who lives four doors down because my roommate is asleep. Athletic events aren't popular with everyone. People come out for the big games, and for a lot of the soccer games, but its not as popular as other campuses. There's an event called Floatopia that happens at the beginning of every quarter. Everyone heads to the beach and gets rafts and hangs out in the water and on the beach. There's an Undie Run, that happens the last week of winter quarter to relieve stress during finals week.

Katie

Greek life is great.

Parker

I am in the sorority Alpha Phi and I really enjoy it:) I also live in the dorms and the people on my floor are extremely friendly and doors are all open! UCSB is a very social campus and is known for its party scene and I also enjoy it for that reason!

Mary

Greek life is big at this school. Students either love it or hate it! Athletic events are semi-popular, but not events that everyone attends. I met my closest friends through the dorms and my sorority. Sororities are extremely important to those involved and considered stupid to those uninvolved. Off campus we go to the beach, drink in IV, and ride our bikes.

Casey

Really, really, rowdy!

Jessica

the dorms are the best social starting point. then GREEK LIFE is the next!!! greek life is AMAZINGGGGGG. the best thing i have ever done! good connections, best friends, and AMAZING memories. if you dont join, DP and all of IV is a good social scene as well!! there is ALWAYS something to do in IV!!! not everyone drinks, but alot of us do! there are some people who get out of hand, but most of us know how to control ourselves. DATING? no way. not here. most guys take these four years as "the last four years they have to screw around" so trust me, you do NOT want to date an IVer, ESP a FRAT GUY!! ha

Kelsey

Always guest speakers, plays, and concerts on campus. Sororities and Fraternities aren't a huge population but they are growing. Some traditions are floatopia, undie run, and many others. The beach parties are huge. Dorm life is amazing. State Street has excellent shopping downtown. A typical weekend for me: Friday- Open frat party I got home very late Saturday- wake up around 9:30 go to a BBQ, spend the rest of the day at the beach for Floatopia, go to dinner in town with friends, go party on Del Playa for the rest of the night Sunday- wake up around 11 go to brunch with my whole hall, go shopping downtown with my sorority sisters, stay up till two am doing that weeks homework.

Dale

Frats and sororities are pretty big but you don't need to be in one to make friends or to have fun. Currently i am the art director for the daily nexus which is pretty chill, i draw and get paid for it. I also am involved in intramural sports and attend the gym regularly. Everything is pretty close by so it's easy to get to. It's easy to go downtown to the clubs or bars during the week and on the weekends. House parties are all over the Isla Vista Community. In a nut shell SB is a great social atmosphere.

Casey

The social life is awesome. Lots of people are in the greek system, but you definitely don't need to be in order to be social. I am on the cheerleading squad and that is also a really good way to meet people, along with all the other sports teams.

Charlie

guest speakers arent really promoted that well, in my opinion, but there are just so many things going on here at all times, so its hard to be interested in every event that occurs.
