What are the most popular student activities/groups?

Paige

If you want to party you can find a reason any day of the week. (Halloween, need I say more) Usually the night begins with a pre-party with friends. Everyone meets, gets ready, and shares a few shots. Then everyone heads out into Isla Vista and finds a house party, just follow the loud music. At any house party there will be drinking if you get there early, the booze runs dry quick when its free. But some will usually be reserved for a tournament of beer pong or flip cup. When midnight rolls around the music is cut (sound ordinance) but the party goes on. You'll group up with your new friends and migrate to one of the awesome establishments open late a very night for the after party snack. My favorite is Freeb!rds or Super Cucas for a burrito. Once the food has sobered you up at about 3am you realize that you have class in 5 hours and stumble home. Some people do this every night. They're called dropouts or . . . frat boys. But don't let the stereotypical party school fool you. The majority of students are here to get their work done, hang out with the homies, and enjoy the beauty of Santa Barbara. You can even go to the parties and socialize without drinking!!! Really, no one cares.

The most popular clubs on campus: Surf Club & Snowboarding Club. Snowboarding club is usually good to join your first year because not only do they have great deals on snowboarding trips, but they always have parties that you can attend for free if you're a member. I am on the UCSB cheer team and I really love it. I thought it might be cliquey and the girls would be snobby but it's so fun and the girls are so fun! It's not well-known so most people are surprised when I tell them I'm on the cheer team here. The dorms are very essential to making friends your first year. I became very good friends with the girls in my dorm and hall and am still very good friends with them. I know that we always had our door open but not very many people do. I would say that the friendliest & most lenient dorms to live in though is F.T. although Santa Cruz & Manzanita has the best location and ocean views. The most popular athletic events are soccer and men's basketball game. Quite a large amount of people attend these games. Greek life is very present but not essential to having fun and making friends. On the weekends, besides partying, downtown Santa Barbara is really nice. There's a lot of shops and the beach down there is beautiful. There's a bowling alley nearby that a lot of people like to go on the weekends called Zodo's also.

I am on the club ultimate frisbee team at UCSB. I couldn't imagine not being on a team in college becuase i have been on one my whole life. I love the team, we travel to Texas, Colorado, Arizona, and all over California. I have met my closests friends on my team and i could not imagine not spending everyday with them. Most students leave their doors open in teh dorms, its nice to be able to jsut walk in and talk for a little or just hang out. Atheltic events, especially soccer and volleyball and basketball are very popular. I have been to many games and i enjoy every one. There are also the many traditions like floatopia and extravaganza that are huge social events. They are so unique because no one else has a party on the ocean (literally!) There are many traditions that students hold too that people just keep alive because they are so much fun. People party almost every night. If you want to party everynight of the week there are definitely ways to make that happen, however the majority of the parties are Thrusday-Saturday night. Even at parties though there are people who do not drink and still havea great time just hangin out. Frats and sororities are not that important. They are fun to go to when they have theme parties and such, but it is by no means the only way to socialize. There are so many other things to do other than go to a frat party. We also go to theme parks, surf, play sports, watch movies, and just goof off doing random things rather than drinking.

Jamie

Whatever your interests may be - you will find a social life to share them with.

Soccer games are very popular here at UCSB. Because we don't have a football team, the soccer games are where most of the students go to show pride an spirit. I play ultimate frisbee for the school and enjoy that very much. My closest friends are on the frisbee team. I love my roommates. A lot of people leave their doors open in the halls. People party a lot in Isla Vista every weekend.

Eric

I'm part of UCSB Rugby. I've had an amzing time being part of that team. I've met all of my best friends on that team. Fortunately rugby was all I needed socially in my four years here. Frats were not for me.

Linda

Greek life is sort of big here, but not too much. If anything, I think I hear a lot of people (including myself) making fun of them. Frat parties can be fun, but house parties are usually better. I'm involved in the UCSB Crew team, and I love it. We get up at 4:30 in the morning six days a week to practice, and I've never been pushed to the limits the way Crew has pushed me. I am in the best shape of my life. It is definitely a lifestyle change. I pretty much stopped drinking since I have to get up so early to workout. But I still go out, but usually only about once a week. And I don't really care to drink anymore- I'm actually kind of turned off from it now, and enjoy going out sober and meeting people!!!! But this is definitely not typical of the average UCSB student. I think most students go out 2-4 times a week. And just about always involves drinking.

Melinda

I feel that people involved in the Greek system and/or sports teams have the most active social lives and seem to be the most well known. Most people constantly drink and go to parties, which is a little hard to adjust to if you're not used to it. Because I personally don't drink, the party scene can get overwhelming very quickly and I often feel there are few people that can relate to me in my situation. Those others who I have met that to do not choose to drink are very rare and scarce. Most people I meet are completely shocked by the idea and constantly question my motives.

bianca

i'm involved with the rowing team which eats up a lot of my time but i am a big big partyer (except during dry season when we can't party or drink alcohol)/our political groups are popular but everything is pretty much you pick to do it and you're i guess/i left my door open int he dorms last year definitely/everything is popular to certain ppl so when you go to things they are always packed but it's with people that choose to take part in those things/there is no dating scene- it is get as drunk as you can and girls pick which guys they want to hook up with/i met my closest friends through crew and the dorms and partying and my boyfriend at a party/you'd be in the library studying or out partying/floatopia, halloween is HUGE, and i don't know what else but we have a lot of random stuff every year- we love dressing up for things and we get vey very into things/people will be partying every day of the week mostly thurs-sat nights tho, thurs a lot of ppl go downtown to bars though/frats and sor's have a bad name here because it is such a small percentage of our community they are known for drinking and partying and being slutty/last weekend i was out of town for a crew regatta/you can go to the library the movies downtown to eat go out to eat in general or hang out with other ppl not partying/live, eat, sleep

Alex

sororities and frats aren't as popular at ucsb as they are at other campuses. it's kind of nice to not have the greek system running the school. rowing has been a lot of fun this year, and it is really nice to make a close group of friends. people party but if u don't it's not a big deal. it's also not weird for you to go to parties but not drink. no one really cares either way. it's nice that everything you need is within waking distance. casual dating is pretty common, but people have boyfriends and girlfriends as well. my door to my dorm room is always unlocked. i trust everyone on my floor. our school is very creative with events. "Floatopia"=genius

Parker

definitely plenty of extracurricular opportunities on campus and off. lots to do, never boring.

Brett

Isla Vista is known as a party town and alcohol abounds.

Tony

do your own thing. whatever you like to do, do it. don't live by my experiences. its not hard to go get plastered with your friends, get stoned with your friends, have a trip with them, just don't be dumb about it to the point where people get hurt or get in trouble, see ivfp comment above.

Heather

the snowboard club is known not for snowboarding but for partying. campus living is fun, i did it for only my freshman year but Isla vista is practically a giant dorm complex in itself. normally there is an open door policy in dorms to keep people interacting for the firct few weeks of school. i met my closest friend in the dorms and my worst enemies in the dorms. thats just life. you get put in a hall or room with a complete stranger and you learn to adapt to it. its fun, but i am glad its over. 2am tuesday- probably doing homework- yesterday was folding my graduation announcements at 2am. halloween is one of the biggest events, students from all over california and even arizona- friends of friends of friends come to party for 3-4 days straight. isla vista becomes a giant party of grown up costumes combined with alcohol and Isla Vista foot partol arresting baligerantly drunk students- normally those NOT from ucsb are the ones getting in trouble. we are the ones too bust taking care of our visiting friends who are lost in IV, drunk, and trying to hook up with the bumble bee girl. its fun...

Jo

I am in Real Life, the Christian club on campus that is devoted to providing every student an opportunity to have a relationship with Jesus Christ and be a community of people that love each other. We are a very active organization with parties and events every week that are both planned and spontaneous. People party Thursday through Sunday, but it isn't centered on the Greek System. Alternative events to drinking include dance parties and movie nights. Last weekend I went to a movie in IV theater on Friday Night, went to a beach BBQ Saturday, baked cookies, then went out to dinner downtown. Sunday I went to church and then went for a walk on the beach.

Lauren

The Greek system is definitely expanding at UCSB. I am involved with the democrats at UCSB, which has been a great experience getting people to register, vote, etc. People often leave their dorms open and are extremely friendly. Athletic events are relatively popular, though we do not have a football team, which does suck. We have many guest speakers, including Bill Clinton and Jon Stewart last year. Dating is hard because of the party scene. Dating is more hanging out at parties than going out. I met my friends in the dorms my freshmen year. 2am on a tuesday I am hanging out with my closest friends watching TV. A major tradition is Halloween, which is incredible. People party often, but its not hard to stay away from that scene if you want, just don't live in Isla Vista. Frats and Sororities are fun, but not necessary for a social life.

Joshua

Don't want to drink? Fine. Go bowling at Zodo's or head to Q's for some pool. Have a night surf or break into the Santa Barbara skatepark. Come to Real Life's "complex" for some music and dancing (no booze, just good times). Blow up an extra XBOX, sneak into the attic of your dorm. People watch from your friend's balcony. Hang out at Java Jones. Go play your guitar at Dog Shit Park. Convert a stolen desk, stolen bike, and stolen caster wheels into your own mobile desk. Use two coat hangers to engineer a device that will open any dorm room door. Play Smash Bros, or Rock Band. Come to my house and I'll cook you Salmon Rushdie with sweet peas and brown rice. Go Freerunning. Find out who can lift your couch the most times in ten seconds, or do the most pushups while holding his breath. Go to Kickbox Club for some sparring. Cruise down town and pretend you're as rich as everyone else. Stroll through the moon-lit harbor. See who can swim to the pier and back with out getting hypothermia. Mix your O Chem experience and some household chemicals to produce a contact explosive, and use it to get rid of your extra microwave. Go shopping for a new desk or mattress (on the side of the street). Build/burn down a beach fort. Go airsofting in the butterfly reserve. Bob for apples... in ice water. Run the naked mile with the track team. Race the midnight crit with the cycling team. Find a skateboard/bike/shopping cart and race down the parking structures. Meet the woman of your dreams on Facebook. Dump the not-so-woman of your dreams. Study for your O Chem final (no it doesn't have to be finals week). Honestly, all of my best times are times that I was not drinking.

Tyler

UCSB Soccer is the most follow sport (2007 National Champs). Gaucho Locos, Campus political clubs, and greek clubs are the majority of the orgs on campus. Dorms are usually on lock down from outsides, but are open to most freshmen. Isla Vista is the most open community in existence. Most people's doors are open, and so are the beer fridges. If you value privacy, dont bother living there. Parties usually start on Wednesday and run through Sunday. There is always music playing. So much in fact, that when you leave it takes weeks to get used to the silence of the normal world. People dont date in Isla Vista. They hook up. Then, they might date. Put 20,000 young people in a square mile and have them interact with no parental authorities. What do you think is going to happen? Just wear a condom. One in four people have some form of an STD. I was a member of a a fraternity, and it was the best choice of my life. You dont need to join a fraternity to party. However, its how I met the majority of the people I know these days. The Greek life is awesome, and it will give you some great memories, and a few scars to boot.

Sarah

I'm super involved with Real Life, which is a Christian club on campus. The community there has been absolutely incredible. I've never met people with a more genuine love for Jesus and for people. We have a ton of events, some of which are outreach, and some of which are flat out fun. My favorite outreach is called "Jesus <3's IV Day," where we get into groups of about six and walk through Isla Vista on a Saturday morning (after Friday night's parties), knocking on doors and offering to clean their houses for free. They usually ask why, and we tell them that it's because Jesus loves IV. It happens once per quarter. As for flat-out-fun events, most of them involve games (Family Business, Psychiatrist, Settlers of Catan, Taboo, 4 on a Couch), dancing (our dances are innnncredible), some sort of popular movie/television show (Lost, Survivor, Arrested Development), or a combination of these three. Also, UCSB prints an After-Dark Calendar in the paper on Thursdays, and it lists a whole bunch of non-alcoholic events that are happening that weekend. There are plenty of options.

Bridgette

The soccer team is probably the most popular team on campus. I am involved in a Christian group and it has been the best experience. I have been able to meet a lot of people that are interested in more than just partying. The dorms really vary on how interactive they are. Manzanita freshmen tend not to leave their doors open as often, but it really depends on the group your living with. On the weekends I usually just hang out with my friends we watch movies, play games, etc.

Beth

There are tons of groups on campus. I'm in Chi Alpha Christian fellowship, it's small, but a lot of fun. The groups are a great way to make friends. The people in my dorm left their doors open (when they were home) Some athletic events (mainly basketball) are popular, others have low attendance. Guest speakers are popular, so is the theater. I met my closest friends through the dorms and through Chi Alpha. I've also met people through classes and work. If I'm awake at 2 am on Tuesday, I'm frantically trying to finish an assignment. The big tradition here is Halloween. If you don't want to drink, there are comedy shows and movies in IV every weekend, and you can always hang out at the different coffee shops or restaurants with your friends. Shopping downtown is always fun too.

Amanda

Many people get involved with Greeklife either throw joining sorrorities of fraternities. There are hundreds of clubs on campus, there is one for any type of interest a student might have and if you cant find a club you like it easy to start your own campus organization. I am involved with the black student union and we do many things such as community service, social, and academic events attend conferences together. It really is a safe space for black students. When it comes to sports UCSB has no football team so soccer is the most supported sport and then comes basketball. I met some of my closest friends through the clubs I joined my first year. Im not usually awake at 2 am on a tuesday but on thursday that is a different story becuase I go downtown to state st for college night. Every year people in the black communtiy look forward to Outreach, African Black Coalition Conference and Black Culture week in the spring. Some people party evey night of the week others save it for the weekends and some studnets do not party at all they perfer to just hang out with a close group of friends. Last weekend I had some friends visit me from my hometown we went and saw the santa barbara sights and went bowling.

Anna

The most popular organizations on campus are the fraternities and sororities--they're everywhere. A lot of UCSB students get involved in Greek life. There are different clubs on campus that are based on culture or race, like KP (filipino club) and VSA. I'm involved in both, even though I'm not Filipina or Vietnamese. Organizations are pretty diverse here. Weekends normally start on Thursday nights, for those who go out to Isla Vista. Dorms are fun-if you're looking for a more social life, don't live in Manzanita. Manzanita houses are more quiet and good for studying, but if you like this kind of environment, just get involved in different orgs-that's how i got to know more people.

Morgan

The dorms are fantastic; the people you live with become your family. You do everything together. Athletic events are so much fun! Especially soccer and basketball. I love how many events there are every day on campus. Lectures, concerts, movies, book readings, dance performances, poetry, you name it. There are always TONS of things to do, and usually a bunch of free ones too.

Owen

All the frat and sororities are very popular. And Real Life is a well known group, because it does things throughout the year. So is the Nexus, the newspaper, and so is the class government here. I am involved with Real Life which is a Christian group on campus that wants to show people that it is not about religion, but it is about a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. We do outreaches and try to serve the community and bring Jesus to other people. We do a lot of different things on campus and have weekly meetings, bible study/missional teams, and other fun dances and events. when i did live in the dorm people left their doors open all the time. i lived on the first floor so it was slightly harder because we had people walking in and out of the floor all the time to get outside the dorm, but overall we did. some of the other floors left there doors opened all the time and unlocked so people could come in and out as they pleased. the athletics are popular, but i am not super involved or interested so i am not good to talk to you about that sorry! IV theater has free movies sometimes, and has cheaper movies to see during the week which is always fun. they have talent shows and guest speakers there as well. I have only seek a guest speaker because of one of my classes, but I have heard many good things about the speakers. The dating scene is more of the "hook up scene" in the Party world. But if you are looking for a legitimate relationship they are out there. There are a lot of people who do not party and drink, and they are out there for real love. but the hook up scene makes me sad because people are looking for love in all the wrong places, and it is hard to watch that because women are so beautiful, and men are so much worthier than they think. so it is hard for me to watch sometimes. I met my closest friends through my bible study through real life. They are the most amazing people i have ever met. my teacher said one time in class that most people do not have close circles of friends because the world teaches us to be alone, and he said "raise your hand if you have close friends" and I did, and i was one of the only ones, and it was really sad because I feel truly blessed to have them in my life. If I am awake at 2am, I am either. 1. hanging out with friends 2. talking with the roomie 3. writing a paper. traditions and events for me and my friends are real life events, exchanging presents for holidays, birthday parties for our friends, easter dinners together, and for the school. sex awareness week, rape awareness, (all women center events) student government elections, and sports. people party every weekend. (Thursday till Sunday) Halloween is the only hectic one! People from all over the state come here. over 10,000 people come to DP (the party street) and wear barely any clothes, party, and drink days before Halloween actually comes. it is a once in a life time experience, and is unique to UCSB. Last weekend I hung out with some of the girls in my bible study, went to church, watched a movie with my boyfriend, and did homework. On a saturday night you can hang out with friends watching tv, go out to dinner and get dressed up, go to the beach to see the stars, go shopping, go to color me mine, go to a friends house and make Pazookie!

Sarah

UCSB is great on the weekends. There is always something to do during the night or day. Isla Vista is right there for the beach, food, or just hanging out with friends. Downtown and other shopping areas can be fun outings with friends. If you do drink, theres always somewhere to go, but what I love is that there is always something going on at UCSB that doesnt involve drinking that I can be a part of. Whether it is events at the hub, concerts, shows, club events, or movies at IV theater, theres always something to do.

linda

guests speakers - awesome theater - not so great. great dance programs tho dating scene- TERRIBLE. everyone is too into hooking up to have the desire to date. i met my closest friends in my sorority. i had plenty of friends who werent in one though, and there is definitely not the crucial need to be a greek at ucsb as there might be at some other schools. if awake at 2am on a tuesday, youre either at home in sweats on facebook, at the davidson library writing a paper, or downtown for 80's night.

Connie

The social life at ucsb is great because there are a lot of options... You live in a college town with 20,000 very social students.houses usually have over 4 people in them, so you can really do whatever you want.every night of the weekend there are themed parties, greek parties, house parties, an excuse to celebrate any random US holiday parties, etc. Dorms are very social as well especially the on campus and ft dorms. Tropicana I heard is a bit antisocial because its mostly athletes... I think ucsb has a great greek life option because it is entirely unnecessary but a great asset to your social life if you choose that path.

cassady

sororites are great for meeting people; most nighttime/going out activities do involve heavy drinking. if i'm awake at 2 on a tuesday i'm out drinking. once you're twenty-one, it's fun to go downtown to the bars

Sina

Soccer team, Greek orgs, Associated Students. Resident Assistants. Sometimes. Not as popular as at bigger schools. People don't date to find relationships, just for a good time. Via orgs and clubs. Studying. Halloween! 4 nights a week. Somewhat important. Went to a music festival. Program Board events. Party.

Mike

I come from a Christian household, and am aware that many parents are afraid to send their kids to UCSB for fear that they won't have any good influences. My friends, both those who attend our on-campus Christian movement and those who do not call themselves Christians, have played a huge role in making me a more mature, accepting, and loving person.

Cameron

The most popular groups would probably be the sororities and fraternities, there is a pretty strong campus crusade for christ group (called Real Life), and people seem to like clubs like the Excursion Club and the Ski and Snowboard Club which seem to center more on partying. IM sports seem popular also, people at UCSB like to stay fit so sports are a good way of maintaining that. In the dorms, students often leave their doors open, and many never even lock their doors. Soccer games are quite popular and basketball games get an ok turn out. I'm not sure past there. Guest speakers do not get a very good turn out and i have no idea about theatre. Dance performances and music performances do pretty well mostly because it is required to go for certain classes in order to pass. I met my closest friends in the dorms. If i'm awake at 2am on a Tuesday, i am studying or writing a paper. Every year there are Greek events and club events. People party pretty often, thursday is the beginning of the weekend for most party-ers. For those who like to party, frats and sororities are pretty important. Last weekend I hung with friends and watched movies. On a Saturday night, you can go to the movies, get ice cream, hang with other non drinking friends, you can even go to parties, you just have to be ready to fend off drunk people and offers of drinks. Off campus, i eat, study, meet friends, live.

Jordan

Greek life is very big on UCSB's campus. I myself am in a sorority house and it is a great thing for me and the community. We do many activities for charities and raise alot of money each year, while having fun doing it. I think that is one of the most important things in life, to be able to contribute by doing something that you enjoy. In my dorm we always left our door open. I have good friends that I met in my first year in Santa Barbara because of the social atmosphere of dorm life. My closest friend actually came to ucsb with me from home. People in UCSB find it hard to date and find social gatherings to be much more fun and less complicated. Floatopia is a big even at UCSB that just happened. It is where you all get rafts and take them to the beach and float in the ocean in a HUGE group all day while barbequeing and ejnoying life on the beach. Another Huge event is ASVT a volleyball tournament thrown by one of the fraternities on campus but is well known all over california as a huge event. If I am up at 2 am on a tuesday I am probably watching movies iwht my roommates.

Dylan

campus crusade for christ (real life). it's a christian organization with an outreach orientation. We want to give everyone on campus the opportunity to know Jesus Christ. closest friends--real life or classes. studying or hanging out with friends or my boyfirend saturday, no drinking: playing games of all sorts or watching movies or just hanging out.

Madison

The greek system is growing really fast here. I'm in a fraternity. There are lots of things to do on and off campus like cultural events, sports games, movies, shows, etc. Holloween is epic here. If I'm up at 2am on Tuesday, I'm either partying or pulling an all nighter. You can definitely have social life if your not in the greek system. People party alllll the time, you can find someone who's down to get fucked up any night of the week. And to be honest, it is kind of difficult to find something sober to do on a Saturday night in Isla Vista. You get used to it, but you can also get over it.

katie

The most popular-as in the most people involved- are probably intramural sports. Everyone does/should do one. I'm currently in badminton. Last quarter I did soccer. The dorms are ok, people leave doors open at least at first, then you kind of get in groups you're comfortable with and keep together. I met my closest friends in freshman summer start program. It's hard to have a real relationship here, especially at first. Don't depend on anyone if either or both are partiers. Traditional event: Halloween-everyone dresses up, gets silly and walks around in the streets-there are floodlights and police on horseback, the parties are supposed to be closed, so it's pretty safe but it's also kind of overwhelming. It's amazing to see how many people are here for it. Oh, and soccer games! go to those! Everyone sings songs and paints themselves, it's cool. Saturday night and not drinking? Maybe watching a movie or holing up in the library. Don't live on DP if this is your plan.

Alex

Intramural sports are very popular, greek life, sports clubs, socio-economic clubs. Yes. Soccer is probably the most popular sport, due to our recent Division Championship! Guest speakers are fairly well attended, theater less. The dating scene is VERY casual (hooking up), or pretty serious (boyfriend/girlfriend). Not a lot of people go out on dates. All my closest friends I met in the dorms. Getting back from 80's night downtown at Q's! Halloween, Madri Gras, ISVT, Fiesta. People party an average of 3 nights per week. Go see a movie, sporting event, go to dinner, study. Beach, shop, eat, hike, camp, ect.

Jill

The most popular groups to be involved with on campus are any sports team and a sorority or fraternity. However, neither are necessary to be immersed in social activities. Although being greek is popular here it is not as exlusive or closed off as you may see on other campuses. Socially, greeks and non-greeks integrate themselves farily well. Our school is not extremely passionate about our sports, however when we have done well or been involved in a championship UCSB students have been very supportive. I was for a short time in a sorority. It was a lot of fun, however I chose not to continue. In my opinion, it is really expensive, therefore most of the people you are surrounded by have a lot of their parents money to spend. My parents support me financially, but I by no means have a credit card to just go spending on a whim. For me, this created a pressure, because I would love to constantly buy nice clothes and go out and get a table at a club, however I simply couldn't. Another reason the sorority may not have work dont for me was because I met my closest friends in the dorms, none which were involved in the greek system. Something I liked while I was involved was that the greek system includes non-greeks at some events. For example, there are a several events put on by sororities or fraternities which are not exclusively greek, everyone can participate or attend which is a lot of fun. I am invovled in a group called Psi Chi. However, I don't participate in this for social gain but more so academic. Most people, unless psych majors, probably dont know about Psi Chi. We have meetings once a month and invite a guest speaker from the faculty to discuss their current research. Its really relaxed and a beneficial club for those who wish to continue on with Psych in the future. I have had a boyfriend for the past three years, who I met in the dorms, so I cant accurately describe the dating scene. However, based on observation and stories from my roommates there is no dating scene. Men and women mostly party together, and probably dont go out on actual dates until they are exclusive and "boyfriend-girlfriend" There is something to do every single night, if you choose. If you're up at 2 and not studying your doing the following: Monday- drinking with your roommates or neighbors. Tuesday- downtown or under 21 drinking with roommates or neighbors. Wednesday- Karaoke dive bar or a bowling ally. Thursday-downtown at bars and clubs, if youre under 21 you are probably out in IV or partying in the dorms. Friday- in IV at a house party Saturday- in IV at a house party If you dont want to drink the UC puts on events you can attend for free or minimal fee. There are basketball or soccer games to go to or sometimes bands or musicians in the University Center's hub. Off campus there is a lot to do downtown involving both drinking and not drinking. There are several clubs, bars, and great restaurants. There are also a few theaters and the Santa Barbara bowl that put on various entertainment.

Toby

Greek Life! I must say that joining a sorority this year was the best decision that I could have ever made. It has contributed greatly to my first year at college, and helped me to get to know hundreds of people rather easily. I know there are some steotypes about Greek life, most of which I have found to be untrue. I must say that the girls in my house are amazing, loving and truly legit. The relationships I have built with these girls will last far beyone our years in college. I would suggest for ANYONE remotely interested in joining a sorority or fraternity to go through rush. There are no obligations, and they will actually be able to see, and judge for themselves how they feel about it. Honestly, joining a sorority was the best experience for me, and I know it will be for so many others too.

Caroline

dating scene? yikes. starbucks is about as "date-y" as you're gonna get in IV. maybe subway next door. unless you're official, you're staying in IV and getting cookiewich. doesn't do too much to woo a girl.

Daniel

In my opinion the dating scene is kind of week. When you live a block and a half from the girl of you're dreams it seems a little excessive to take her to dinner. Also with open parties and the ridiculous amount of people willing to hook up randomly, it's hard to get motivated to tie your self down, or face real rejection.

Shelby

the dating scene here is not great. because of the party lifestyle, a lot of ppl are just looking to hook up and dont want commitment. however, quite a few of my friends have started long term relationships here, so its not impossible to find.

anacapa is the best dorm sororities are amazing parties are huge for meeting people but bad for relationships... if looking for a bf/gf, dont find one at a party iv is the place to be on weekends

Club sports are competitive and fun. They require a lot of self discipline and dedication in the UCSB environment. There are many programs offered to keep students from drinking for fun. There are concerts, movie screenings, comedy acts, and other special events every weekend that are very cheap or free for students to attend.

ASUCSB. Sororities & Fraternities, Soccer team. I'm involved in ASUCSB. Many students in dorms leave their doors open. Soccer, basket ball, and volleyball games have good turnouts. Random hookups always happen at parties. I met my closest friends through living together in the dorm in freshman year and through student government in my sophomore year. 2 am on a Tuesday, doing hw/studying Halloween!!! People party ALL THE TIME! Collectively, not a big factor of the campus. Last weekend, up studying. Partying. Hanging out with friends. Partying, living, eating, going to classes, shopping, sunbathing.

Greek life is big. I'm involved in Alpha Phi. Great sorority strong girls, I don't drink. I promote that. I am who I am. I'm an opera singer involved in productions and also involved with Shrunken Heads productions doing Jekyl and Hyde. YEs some leave their doors open. Athletic events=popular. Guest speaker at beginning of year was amazing. I'm involved in theater. A lot of people have things for each other, we are in college! Some people party daily others once a week. Sororities/Frats?? Important?? I would say they are great to get acquainted with people that like to have a good time and be apart of organization with strong individuals. The drama definitely needs to stop. Went to sorority formal with a girlfriends downtown! I don't drink. My friends and I found an empty box and made an obstacle course, play volleyball on the beach, swim, watch a movie, go to State Street! Go to State Street!

The greek life is popular. Students in dorms leave their doors open. It ventilates the room and welcomes people in, which is especially useful at the beginning of the year when you don't know anybody. Soccer and basketball games are very popular. So are certain guest speakers. Don't know about theater. Dating scene is pretty good. Lots of single guys and girls. But parties are not the best place to meet them, especailly if you want a relationship. Most people at parties just want to hook up. I met my closest friends in the dorm last year. We lived in the same hall. If I'm awake at 2am on Tues, it means I'm studying. Halloween is HUGE! The weekend closest to it as well as the actual day are both celebrations. People make sure they have a different costume for each day. And thousands of people just walk up and down DP. A lot of people party every weekend or every other weekend. frats and sororities are important to the people in them and they have parties but I don't pay much attention to them. I partied and studied last weekend. On a sober sat night, you can hang out with friends, go to a party sober, go to a movie, go to the comedy routine at the UCen, study, watch tv. Getr creative. I live off campus so I do pretty much everything off campus.

the most popular clubs and teams on campus are soccer and lacrosse. The people in the dorms are usually pretty open and easy to talk to sincw everybody is here to make new friends in the first few weeks. There is a lot of events to go to almost any night of the week, including weekends. Fraternities and Sororities aren't important in the social scene, since there is parties all along DP, with frats and sororities farther from DP. During the day there is always people working out in the gym and playing soccer or just sitting/studying in the sun on a nice day.

I am in the sorority Alpha Phi. I know sorority girls have reputations for being brainless, drunken sluts, but I know every girl in my sorority defies those stereotypes. 3 girls from Alpha Phi are on Mock Trial. We have quite a few girls in the honors program. We have several girls in pre-med, pre-law, and other extensive majors. It doesn't mean that we don't like to have fun, but it also means that that is not our main priority.
