University of Michigan-Ann Arbor Top Questions

Describe the students at your school.

Jessica

There are all types of people that go to the university. Some from michigan, many from abroad. There are really social groups for anyone to be a part of. I will say that in many cases a few students tended to be a bit snobby for my taste, but if you look you will definitely find those who are not. People dress all over the spectrum as far as class attire. Financially speaking I'd say there are more students at Michigan that are from well-to-do backgrounds that financially strained backgrounds. But again, its such a big place all types of people attend the schools. There is a lot of political activity going on in not only the university setting but the city itself. I'd say that when one thinks of ann arbor they think of liberals generally, but in actuality both left and right are strongly represented.

Danny

I do not think a single person could possibly feel out of place at Michigan. While the diversity is probably not as high as advertised, there is definitely a place for everyone. Fraternities and sororities seem to be somewhat clicky and may fit certain stereotypes, but all different kinds of people constantly hang out together, unless they specifically choose not to. The school spirit surrounding football games and school pride in general tends to unite everyone, from the overweight tuba player in the band to the drunken frat boy who is cheering him on. In the dining hall, friends tend to sit together. People of different races, religions, etc. may chose to remain friends with their own and form groups according to their dividing factors, but that is not necessarily the case. If you are outgoing and want a diverse group of friends, that's available also. Your life at Michigan is completely up to you.

Jessica

I hang out with a Jewish crowd, which is amazing for me. I love being in the Jewish community but many of the people I know are from wealthy families in Long Island, NY or LA. I think the people most out of place are the ones who don't join a sorority or fraternity. But I think being a little out of place is a good thing, it keeps things interesting.

Nathan

Super left and ignorant of understanding the conservative view. Girls wear uggs and those tacky stretchy pants with the big sweaters. Guys wear whatever. Different students don't really react, populars with the populars, the geeks with the geeks, weirdos with weirdos

Kendall

Not diverse enough, better looking than people think.

Ryan

very diverse, people wear whatever they want, there aren't really any people in my opinion who wouldnt fit it, its for the nerds, the preps, the alternative and punk, and the athletes Basically I think anybody could come here and fit in with people like them because its such a huge school. I dont think they would get made fun of either for being different because there are so many kinds of people here.

Ryan

Kaitlin

This is quite possibly the only negative thing I have to say about Michigan. While the student body is incredibly diverse, the campus is very clique. The Greek system exacerbates this stratification between members of the student body. For example, certain fraternities are known for being predominantly Jewish or African American or Asian. There isn't a lot of melding between social groups. As a result the diversity is mostly prevalent in the classroom.

Robbie

Michigan prides itself on its diversity. With that said, there are too little attempts for interaction amongst social identity groups. Take an intergroup dialogue class!

Rachel

I don't think anyone would feel out of place at Michigan. There is a student group for anything you could possibly think of, and a community to go along with it. It really is almost a microcosm of the world, just a little more liberal.

Madison

Students to talk about future earning potential quite a bit.

Blake

most students are either from new york or michigan

Joshua

There is a large New York population of very wealthy students.

Ricky

Students should never feel out of place because there are all types of groups at Michigan!

Alex

Most U of M students are from Michigan, since it is a public school and a lot cheaper for in-state students to go. There are a lot of students from the East and West coasts. There are also a lot of students studying abroad from Asia. I am mostly friends with Michigan guys, but chill with out of state students as well. I think most people hang out with people from similar financial backgrounds as themselves.

Carrie

The Panhellenic Association made up of 13 sororities is not a good representation of the diversity on campus. The sorority members in these chapters are very similar and the only differences really occur with religion.

Annabelle

I am very involved and isolated in the Greek community on campus. Most people in the Greek community that I associate/interact with are pretty much uniform. Of course there is diversity on campus, but I am not immersed in it as much as I would like to be. Most people, it seems, stick to their own groups and don't venture out as much as the university boasts. I would say half of the students here are out-of-state. That half is mainly from New York, Chicago (and other parts of the Midwest), California (mainly Los Angeles) and a few from Florida. Most students are politically aware and somewhat active. Everyone wants to be rich.

Rachel

-In religious group -None -Whatever they want -Yes -Don't eat in the dining hall -Half in state, half out of state -I don't ask -Not sure -Not sure -Maybe, not my friends

Mark

there are crazy things happening here all the time. rallies, strikes, hash bash, speakers. students are willing to speak their voice about anything and some have very radical ideas

Rebecca

My friends and I are mostly from the state of Michigan, but I met some students from other places when I studied abroad. The people I spend the most time with are the ones I met freshman year.

Amy

I love how diverse the student body is here at the University of Michigan! It's great to interact with people from so many different backgrounds. Even if your opinions stand out from others, you are respected for your position. It's so important to get involved and stand up for what you believe in now, during your time at a university and always.

Evan

The student body is really very liberal and open-minded. you aren't expected to conform to any standards.

Aliza

The student body here is EXTREMELY diverse...Michigan prides themselves on this.

Nico

The Michigan student body is very diverse but very segregated.

Paige

While most people can find a group of people to be part of, this campus is no different than others. People who dress poorly and have the "geeky" look, will inevitably be ostracized.

Cris

The one thing I have to say about Michigan's student body is that it is NOT diverse. Although it may say it on all the pamphlets, if you look around the Diag, or down South University, you'll probably just see white kids. The pass on Proposal 2 was the most foolish thing ever. Also most groups will stick with each other. The Indians with the Indians, the Koreans with the Koreans, etc. Which is understandable because people with the same cultural backgrounds feel more comfortable together therefore they are attracted to each other. On a lighter note, everyone is very accepting of each other.

Whitney

most students from michigan, mainly oakland county, middle to upper class most prevalent, students talk about future salaries often

Jessica

Michigan is extremely diverse, and i cannot think of one kind of student who would feel out of place coming here. Since Ann Arbor is such a liberal town, students are very politically aware and active in politics and major debates.

Brett

People basically stick to the same groups

Ali

Michigan is pretty liberal. There are always different protests going on in the diag. There's also a pretty strong focus on the future/post-graduation plans, but people find time to have fun.

Ash

The student body is extremely diverse, and everyone seems to be extremely goal oriented and focused.

Marissa

Most people who go to Michigan are from Michigan. But the girl who lives next to me is from New Jersey, I work with a girl from Wisconsin, and a guy in my math group is from Korea. And that is only three people I've meet since coming here. Students have a tendency to group with other students who have similar backgrounds. Asians with Asians, middle class kids with middle class kids and so on. I don't really see that as a bad thing. Each group goes through different things, and it is important to have people who understand. Also this doesn't mean that you don't meet lots of different people and have the chance to be friends with them. Most students wear jeans and Tshirts to class. Some people dress nicer and wear skirts and button down shirts and so on. Lots of other people dress casually, and some people even wear sweats and pjs to class, although that is not as common. What drives me nuts is that tons of girls wear leggings with Ugg boots. I personally don't think leggings look good with nothing over them. They are not a substitute for pants!

Harper

Michigan has one of the most accepting student bodies you can find. I find a majority of students hail from Michigan but we do have members from every state and many foreign countries. The campus itself is more left-winged but there are right-winged people here to, it's not hard at all to find your own niche. You will see more North Face clothes, Ugg boots, and leggings on people here than you will ever have been used to seeing in your entire life. I find the majority of students come from privileged backgrounds, but not being from such a background won't exclude you, especially if you can find others who aren't pompous about their situations.

Skylar

Lets see... The four tables of students in the dining hall: -Sorority Girls. Decked out in their Uggs and sunglasses, you can hear them talking about one of two things... last weekend or next weekend. -Atheletes. Decked out in their Michigan Apparel, they laugh and joke before they head off to practice; often texting on their way out the door. -General Student Body. Talking about how much work they have to do, the papers they have to write, and the exams they have coming up. Planning for the weekend. -Engineers. Bleary-eyed, studying at the table. Often a quiet bunch. Tend to be doing homework between bites. Stressed is a normal state of being.

Lauren

Diverse, and very interactive.

Rose

Michigan's political scene is quite liberal, so definately any student with conservative views could feel out of place here. But, he/she shouldn't. I myself am a Republican and I appreciate the oppertunity to see the other side of an issue. But I offer this to any student planning to come here: be very careful who you share your political views with because they just might want to get into a debate with you.

Brent

diverse

Katie

Michigan is very diverse and that diversity is celebrated. Of course you will find your radical here and there but as a whole Michigan students are politically aware and accepting.

Hunter

Michigan used to have affirmative action, then people were raccist, now this campus is full of crackers and asians. We need more color, but whateva one day it'll go down.

Natalie

Living on campus has opened up my views towards other races, cultures, and people of differing socioeconomic statuses. People at UofM are very diverse and everyone gets a long. I took a course called intergroup dialogue which helped students with different backgrounds learn about one another and come together. No student would feel out of place at Michigan.

Danielle

I think a lot of people tend to hang out with "similar types of people". Most Michigan students are from Michigan, New York, and California. A lot are very wealthy. There is a lot of different ethnic groups.

Mary

students dress horrible to class-- leggings, uggs, northface jackets, sweat shirts. it is cold, but the attire is borderline offensive

Chelsea

Since Michigan is such a massive school, there isn't just one type of person that goes here. There are clubs for all interests and everyone could find a niche here. Students are from all over the world and the country. Greek life is really prevelant. One could argue there is a sorority girl uniform to wear to class which consists of leggings, hoodies, uggs, long north face jacket, hair up in a weird clip, and a herve or longchamp bag and obviously a blackberry. Everyone else is wearing something that says Michigan on it. There are a lot of wealthy people at Mich which obviously leads to a lot of sterotypes like Jews from long island driving around x5's and asians speeding around in brand new mercedes. People are flashy with what they have at Michigan. But no one is out of place here. Most of U of M is liberal but there are also a lot of republicans. Ann Arbor is extremely liberal.

Emily

you get out of it what you put into it. It's kind of like highschool- but you're getting involved for reaons way cooler than a resumer builder. You join MSA student government to voice your opinions and have an active role with important things on campus, rather than just joining NHS because you were told it would look good. Join dance teams, debate teams, intramural sports, you can even join the squirrel club. The more you do, the more people you get, and the more diverse of a college of experience you are bound to have.

David

Since I am from Michigan, I still hang out with a lot of my friends from high school. Everyone is pretty chill. I meet a lot of kids in my pre-med classes and also in the pre-med club.

Brittany

The best thing about Michigan is its diversity and its liberal identity. Ann Arbor is an amazingly accepting place. No matter what clothes you wear or how you do your hair, you belong on the Diag enjoying the student life and just hanging out on campus. In my classes it is so interesting and fun to get to know other students who don't have the same personality/background as me. That's what I like so much about Michigan, no matter who you are, you have a place here.

Naomi

I love everyone here. People say that we're not diversified enough but I come from such a small town that it does seem really diverse to me and I really enjoy that. Everyone I've met seems very open and genuinely good people, I mean I'm sure that not everyone's like that but I have so many more REALLY good friends here.

Madison

There is A LOT of variability in students' studiousness and talent. There are students here who could easily distinguish themselves at a school like MIT or Harvard. There are also a great many who seem to have sneaked past admissions in phony glasses and a trench coat. I would bet that at Michigan more than any other school the average student is astounded daily by both the brilliance and the stupidity of other elements of the student body.

James

Michigan students are a pretty diverse bunch in every sense of the word. You can find people at U of M of every race, socio-economic group, religion and sexual identity you can imagine. In general people here are pretty liberal, at least when it comes to social issues, but there's a significant conservative community here as well.

Caleb

I think Michigan is proud to be so diverse, although it could stand to be more diverse. Many students are international or even out-of-state. It can be aggravating to take classes with them because they take their privileges for granted.
