Describe the students at your school.

Jeremy

Eager to learn, intelligent, and open to new ideas.

Charlie

Laid back

Kara

Very New England with an international flare.

Krista

Administration really likes to use the word "diversity," which is pretty ironic given the fact that there really isn't any on campus. Most of the kids who go to UNH are either from New Hampshire or some other state in New England. Maybe that's why everyone seems to be white and wearing an Abercrombie and Fitch hoodie. Walking around campus, you'll see a lot of denim mini skirts and flip flops, not to mention a lot of sweatpants. Most of the people you'll meet grew up in the suburbs and went to a public high school. If you look a little deeper than this though, you'll find that there are plenty of smaller groups of people who don't fit this overall image. UNH has a great outdoor education program and is big into environmental action, so there are plenty of hippies who hang out on Thompson Hall Lawn playing Frisbee and climbing trees. Every year, there's a solar powered music festival which is always full of dreadlocked heads. There's also College Woods, an on campus area full of trees and walking paths for anyone who happens to be outdoorsy. And then there are a lot of very politically active students, most of whom are registered democrats. For this reason, it's easy to be informed about politics and everything else that's going on in the world. For every person who fits the mold of the public school student who doesn't go to class and lives off of Ramen noodles, there's someone well dressed enough and intellectually motivated enough to prove them wrong. A lot people see college as a bubble where you're cut off from the world. My experience has been the opposite. Because of how politically aware this campus is, I actually find it harder to stay informed when I'm not here.

Andy

I think UNH is filled with organizations that anyone can place themselves in and have a great time while being here.

Caitlin

ON campust i have not met many people that are not white. I didnt until i went abroad and spent alot of time in Australia with aboriginal people. People usually wear sweats to class or jeans and a t-shirt. Most people are from new hampshire, and it sucks meeting poeople cause they all had like 50 other people from their school go here.

Caryn

I think that this campus is very diverse so everyone has a place somewhere. Majority of students wear sweats or jeans to class, people are very casual here. I think a lot of people here are upper middle class or upper class. This campus seems to be pretty politically aware and I would say that a majority of people are left handed.

Sarah

Not a lot of ethnic diversity. Out of place if you dont like large schools or are social if you like the city. Jeans or sweatpants. Segregated by cliques and what youre involved in. Football/sports, frat, hippies, and normal girls. Middle class financial. Some students are politically aware, its up to individuals to become educated. centers? Yes money is key in jobs.

Brianna

I feel like UNH welcomes all types of students, and that not too many groups would feel out of place. I feel like they have many clubs and groups that involve all people, and do not leave anyone out. I feel like these groups give people the chance to interact, different or not. At the dining hall I see the tables divided a lot by groups, clubs, and residence halls. UNH students are from everywhere and every type of financial backrounds. I think many are politically active with their demonstrations on T Hall Lawn etc. I feel as if UNH has a very diverse culture.

Ryan

i dont reall have any relations with those groups on campus. i find that alot of people on campus where UNH apparel. UNH students interact with different groups but now being affililated with greek life, mostly greek people hang out with greek people. i feel like alot of UNH students are from New Hampshire. i dont hear epople talking about politics or how much they will earn one day.

Kayla

The student body is great. There are many different people who all mesh together well. Its great to meet people you get along with so well, after only meeting them here in college. Most students are from MA,NH,ME. Then there are some from other further states.

candice

most students are either from MA or NH mostly white, but there are a variety of races on campus obviously not as much as if we were in a school in a city

Ryan

We are very sheltered here because i feel that there is not a lot of diversity on the UNH campus. I usually only wear yoga pants and a sweatshirt to class because i don't really feel the need to impress anyone. MOst people either wear that or jeans and a casual top. Typically i don't see many people dress up that much for class. I always meet new people in my classes and it's fun to get to know them outside of class or when you work on a project together. I wouldn't say there is really a separation of lunch tables. Its not really like highschool because you meet such a variety of people and everyone basically gets along. If i had to i guess i would say the greek life have one table, athletes have another, honors students with another and then the rest is a random assortment. Most of the UNH students i have found are from the New England area and have a semi decent amount of money.

Kaitlyn

UNH has a variety of students and I think anyone could fit in here. The school is so big that I would find it hard to believe if you could not find a group to belong to. Most students are very laid back, wearing casual, comfy clothes to class. Although the lifestyle is pretty carefree, students do take their work very seriously.

Connie

mostly affluent and from the northeast

Kelly

I think every where you look you will find a student of a different race, someone who dresses differently, but put together most of the students here are equal. Most people where jeans and a tshirt to class. No one really gets dressed up. I dont think any certain type of student feels out of place here on campus because it is so excepting of everyone. Students usually talk about their future and what hope will come out of their life once they leave unh.

Sandra

I think that for the most part UNH is a very accepting campus of students. People generally wear casual clothes to class, sometimes even bed time clothes.

Kirsten

There is no student that would feel out of place at UNH. Students going to class can range from wearing jeans and a nice sweater/tee to sweatpants and a hoodie. Different students interact all around campus. The four tables at a dining hall would be a table full of jocks, a table full of pretty girls, a table full of regular boys and girls, and a table full of greeks. Most students from UNH are from New Hampshire. Students are politically aware and definitely active. There is a usually a solid split between democrats and republicans, but I think there are more democrats around UNH.

Marisa

This school does not have as many ethnicities as I am used to at home. Students wear comfortable cloths such as jeans to cloths. Most students are from Mass or NH.

Meghan

I think that the student body of UNH is not very diverse. There is a majority of students of same racial stature. And people do not seem to keen on hanging out with other races than their own.

Jennifer

I think UNH is prominently white students, but there are students of every other race as well. I dont think anyone would feel out of place at UNH because there is such a diverse group of people here. Everyone here can be themselves, wear what they want, and hangout with who they want. There is also people here from all different economic backgrounds. Noone seems to stand out... everyone jsut blends together.

Ryan

The only gorpu I am in is Alpha Phi and I think it's such a great experience being part of the greek system. It gets you very involved with UNH as a whole and you feel like you belong somewhere.

Bianca

I have never seen a serious problem with race on this campus everyone is usually very open. I dont think any student would feel out of place there are many different kinds of people here Most students are from NH maine or mass. I think most students are middle class to upper class. Yes students talk about how much they will earn one day.

Alex

Most students don't dress up for class, however some do and personally sometimes i feel as though those people are a little out of place. It seems like people just wear sweats to class, or jeans and a t-shirt. A lot of people will also wear an everyday outfit but nothing too nice.

chelsea

I am friends with so many different types of people and I love that. Many students just roll out of bed in sweats to go to class. You don't ever need to dress up; I always just wear some comfy pants and a sweatshirt usually. If you had a presentation or something, then it would be appropriate to look nice. I don't think anyone could feel out of place because there are so many different people that they are bound to make friends with interests like their own. Maybe if someone really didn't like the idea of a big school they might feel out of place, but it really doesn't feel as huge as everyone makes it out to.

Jordan

UNH does not have a lot of diversity. Mostly the students on campus are WASP's who are in the middle to upper class and from New England. Students are definitely politically aware on-campus because of the New Hampshire's primary. This year we had a lot of presidential candidates on campus including one of the republican debates.

Danielle

Most UNH students are from New Hampshire and Massachusetts. Not many students come from far away states or countries. I do not believe that there is much diversity on campus and most students are Caucasian and are from the middle/upper class.

Kelly

We are not a very diverse campus at all

Carson

UNH is extremely diverse and I think students are not afraid to join a group, club, or anything that supports anything they show interest in.

Brianna

Most students wear sweatpants and a sweatshirt to class, some people wear jeans and a tee-shirt or very casual clothing.

Jillian

I wish our school was a bit more diverse. Everyone is pretty much white middle-class New Englanders.

Stephanie

I really have not had any experiences with racial, religious, LGBT or socio-economic groups on campus. I don't really think that any type of student would feel out of place at UNH because I think it is large enough and offers enough for anyone to find their place and feel comfortable. Most of the UNH students are from New Hampshire and Massachusetts. I would say the most prevelant financial background would be middle class. I am graduating in May and I have very rarely heard people talking about how much they'll earn one day, as poor college students everyone is more just trying to have enough money right now.

Abby

Extremely diverse! UNH offers something for everyone, so anyone can find a club or student organization that offers activities that they are interested in. UNH students are very modest, for the most part, and don't flaunt the things that they have as compared to other students. There are a wide variety of students that attend UNH, so for the most part, people are very accepting of differences here due to the nature of our environment.

Carly

I don't have many experiences with racial, religious, LGBT or any of these groups on campus. I don't think that any kind of student would feel out of place at UNH, but that's just my own beliefs. I think different types of UNH students interact within their own circle of friends. Most UNH students are from NH and MA. I believe students are politically active but some could be more active. I have never heard students talk about how much they'll each one day - if they do I think it is slightly ridiculous.

Kate

Although UNH at first glance looks rather undiverse, the diversity is more visible in the smaller groups in UNH. If you look at diversity as more than just race you will see that the socioeconomic and ways people were raised is what is diverse.

Virginia

UNH is not racially diverse, but I think that anyone could find a place to fit in. There are all different kinds of people and clubs for people to join.

krista

i feel as though UNH is diverse, but could be more. There are groups for everyone out there which is helpful for people to find the right place for them and to figure out who they really are. A lot of students do not really care what they look like when they go out in public around campus, expeically to class. that is not necessarily a bad thing, however, if we all looked presentable when we left our houses/apartments/dorms, our school may get a little more reputable! students talk about how much they will make someday, but how much is in their bank account now, which is usually the bare minimum is what is usually talked about

Amanda

UNH is really not that diverse. Students tend to wear northfaces and uggs. Most students are from NH or Massachusetts. UNH has had a lot of political candidates that come by, so I would say that UNH is politically active.

Danielle

Like stated previously, there is a definite lack of diversity - however its definitely increasing. Most students are from New England.

ALyssa

Many of the students at UNH come from the same general area. Most are from NH and then there is a large chunk from MA. Almost all of the students are from the north east area. Students clothing varies from person to person. Many wear uggs or flip flops with jeans and a UNH a sweat shirt but I feel that with what most people in our generation wear.

Marya

The student body is very diverse at UNH. We have people from all over the UNited States. Unlike some people think, we do not only have students from New Hampshire.

Juliann

UNH is a very diverse student body. I have had interactions with many different races, religions, etc. I'm not sure of a student that would feel out of place at UNH. Students wear all different clothing to class. It ranges from sweat pants and pajamas, to jeans and sweatshirts, to dressy clothes and heals. I feel that politics plays a hige role on this campus. I know that the political clubs have trouble fundraising and getting support from the student body. I've heard that conservatives are the "minority" here on campus, but I'm not sure if its true. I haven't experienced a converstaion where someone was talking about how much they earned that day.

Morgan

earthy, loves to wear sweatpants, relaxed, laid back

Kristin

Most UNH students are from the new england area. A lot of students recieve scholarships to come to unh whether it is for sports or for academics. There are a lot of different types of students that go to UNH, religiously and racially and they all have their own views of the campus as I do. I do not know what the four types of students are at the dinning halls for I do not eat there as much as I do at my own apartment. Most students are from the middle class range I would say, with a few below and above as well.

Lauren

There is a large variety of what students wear to class that ranges from dress pants, heels, and a blouse to sweatpants and a sweatshirt and even in some cases pajama pants. I think each student has their good and bad days dress wise but the point is that everyone has them and there isn't any judgment.

Jessica

We have a very diverse campus, there are every type of people here. There are preppy, gothic, skater, then people from differecnt religious and racial backgrounds. The advantage of having such a diverse campus is there are always going to be people simillar to you and what you like to do.

Erica

I do not like how out of state students pay so much more than instate students. I do not really see too many conflicts between race or religion. For the most part, UNH students are accepting and open to diversity.

kristin

Not a very diverse campus, financial backgrounds differ. Most students from New Hampshire or Mass.

christine

There are many different groups at UNH. I think that we all complement and support eachother by being accepting of our differences.

Meaghan

I belive that most people that go to UNH are W.A.S.Ps and I think there are good and bad things to that. I know there is some diversity but I also feel like those people are cut off and not mixed in through the system. I belive many students are politically aware but also ignorant about other areas of the country and the world.
