University of New Hampshire-Main Campus Top Questions

Describe the students at your school.

Erica

Students seem to be very laid back and down to earth type of people

Kristin

UNH is socially accepting. There is always something for someone!

Jess

I think minority students may feel out of place at UNH because it is a predominately white campus. Most students are from NH or MA and most of the people I know come from wealthy or well-off families. Students are predominately liberal, although there are some conservatives. Yes, I feel that different types of students interact here.

Katrina

There is not a lot of diversity at UNH. The majority of students are caucasians and from New England suburbs. I think an African American may feel out of place at UNH. Most students wear jeans and a t-shirt to class. However, students are very diverse in personality. Everyone has different views socially, politically and religiously.

Christofer

UNH is a hugely diverse school. We have organizations specifically for various races, religious groups, hobbies, interests, and nearly any walk of life. There is a very strong and present LGBT group, a Black Student Union, and the Diversity Support Coalition. These groups work to make students more aware of the diversity on their campus through events, lecture series, film screenings, and music. It's no lie that bias incidents do happen on campus, but they aren't just swept under a rug. Residential Life compiles all the bias incidents (posters, signs, graffiti, pictures) and add them to a gallery that students can observe. The gallery is there so students know it is happening and that it is not okay. Seeing the incidents in one presentation really opens your eyes and lets you know what's really going on in people's minds. So, while there are students on campus who feel the urge to make others feel inferior, there is a group willing to fight back and stand up. I think that's incredible. I don't think any type of person would feel out of place at UNH once they find their niche. The people who have trouble "fitting in" are usually the ones who aren't trying hard enough to find an organization that suits them best. It's your own fault if you're bored at UNH: there is just so much to choose from!

Ashley

I do not think that there is too much diversity at UNH, but there is some. I don't think there's a specific type of student that would feel out of place at UNH, maybe someone from a different country. Most students wear casual clothes to class, jeans or sweatpants. I think the majority of UNH students are from the New England area, although some are far farther away. Most students that I know have a dependable financial background, their parents are paying for them to go to school. Some students are politcally aware, I am not so it's hard for me to say what other people are because I don't attend any events with politics.

Katrina

I am a member of Alpha Phi sorority, so I am closely related to all whoa re in the greek system. I dont have many experiences with racial of other economic backgrounds. I feel as though many people are the same yet different here on campus. I mean there are a lot of different groups, likes, dislikes, but all students knwo they are in new hampshire in the rural areas for people are able to dress comfortably casual through out the year. Sweats and jeans are always around. I feel as though many students are from new hampshire or massachusetts where most people are aware of where others live and their surroundings.

Erika

Love the dining hall.

Stacy

there little diversity

Erica

Greek like has made an inpact on me because without it I would not have attented many events and met a lot of other organizations on this campus that are really great.

hayley

It is no secret that UNH is not very diverse. Coming from an inner city highschool with a very diverse population it is quite a change. I am not a minority so I cannot say this with certainty, but I do not feel as if UNH would be the most comfortable place for those who are, though there are very many diversity groups on campus. There is definitely a mix of financial backgrounds but a lot more wealthy people than i had expected!

Nicole

I can't go anywhere without seeing a familiar face. Seeing how this is a University of 12,000 plus, it seems like it's growing smaller by the day.

Kelly

I feel that overall, UNH is a very homogeneous population. It seems to me that a pretty big majority of this campus are white, middle-class citizens and are probably from New England. I don't feel that different types of students here interact at all. You almost always see the same types of people together and a lot of students feel uncomfortable around groups of students who are different from them.

Alyson

I don't feel like anyone would be out of place here everyone is very accepting here. The student body is very politcally aware and are mostly left. The only group that I feel has a hard time fitting in here is the greeks for some reason. Greek life has a bad image but I feel most of it is from movies.

Shannon

Not very racially diverse, mostly white, middle class students from new england or surrounding areas.

Ashley

I love the atmosphere of the students here. You have the students that get up in the morning and get dressed and ready for the day and others that roll out of bed and wear sweatpants and nobody judges either way. It is however you learn best, whatever makes you most comfortable.

Sarah

I think that everyone is really tolerant of one another. I find myself smiling at everyone I pass on the sidewalks.

Vicky

I feel that most students wear what they want to class, and this means sweat pants and sweatshirts alot! Uggs also are a must in the wintery weather.

Alicia

I think UNH is a very diverse campus and everyone has a place somewhere here. College just as high school has the cliques and the drama. Those two things will always exist. I think here at UNH, there are a lot of students that come from families higher in class, but there are also students who do not.

brie

Being a senior, you really cannot be surprised by anything that goes on at the UNH campus. One thing I love about the student body is that it is a little bit of everything. From personality, to race, to greek or independents, to sports players, to the skaters- there is a wide range of different "groups" that most everyone would fit into. I have been on campuses such as Syracuse, and you are either a greek or an arty type. Here at UNH, its an all around good mix. I think that depending on the type of person you are, there is a "group" on the UNH campus. I do not like to be defined as a "sorority girl," but somehow or another that is where I ended up.

Andy

The campus is filled with different people. This is a great opportunity to meet all different types of people.

Samantha

I feel the student body is not very diverse, with not a variety of ethnicity, race, and religion. Students dress to class ranging from preppy and stylish to laid back/"hippie." These two different stereotype separate students and the way they interact. Most students come from the New England Area, many from massachusetts and New Hampshire.

Megan

I think its a pretty diverse group of people at UNH because it is so big. I think theres a group for everyone, so it works out really well.

Hayley

i feel like everyone is in place at UNH. the student body is very diverse and includes almost every group you can think of, eventhough some groups are smaller than others. most students wear jeans, flip-flops (or uggs) and a shirt/sweatshirt, sweatpants are also common attires, though some students will dress up a little more. most stuents are from the new england area.

Alex

There is not a lot of racial diversity on campus. There are defiantly lots of different economic classes. I really do not think that any student would feel out of place here. There is a niche for everyone. Most UNH students are from MA or NH.

Christina

The thing that I love most about UNH is how diverse the student body is. No one singles anyone out, everyone fits in somewhere and no one judges any other student. Everyone is very laid back and relaxed, we all wear sweatpants and sweatshirts and no one cares. I see all different types of students hanging out together that wouldn't seem normal in high school.

Grace

I wish that the UNH student body was more diverse. I also wish that they had more campus activities to do.

Stephanie

Politically students are not all that involved. It may seem like they are but it the small college democrats have a loud voice. Like their party the College Republicans tend to be more reserved. I get invited to many many democratic events from anti-republican events, rally s, etc from the college democrats. And nothing from the college republicans. Maybe it is because republicans are less outspoken, or there are just less here on this campus. It is college and colleges are known to be liberal.

Shannon

I feel that the student body lacks in diversity severely. This is starting to change, however, with the improvement of athletics in respect to other universities. Diversity is an important factor in the student body because it encourages students to interact with people that they may not have in their hometown or high school, gaining for themselves a certain kind of social knowledge that can only be learned through experience.

Andy

UNH is not very diverse. Almost all of the students are white. Whoever isn't might feel out of place. Most people are nice here so it shouldn't be a big issue. Being one of the most expensive public schools, I would assume the majority of the student body has to be in the middle class or upper class. Students are mostly from the New Hampshire and the near by states...Vermont, Conn., Mass., NY, NJ, Maine, etc. I think most people here are more democratic and liberal.

Micaela

UNH is a typical New England college, which means that there are mostly all white students here. There are also a number of different races and religions though.

Whitney

There is not enough diversity at all. The only diversity is in the athletic teams, which is pathetic. Not only does UNH lack diversity in the racial aspect, but everyone looks as though they came from a middle to upper class perfect family with a white picket fence, two car garage, with three kids, and a dog; from a suburb. Most students are from Mass or New Hampshire, coming from New York is hard. Because everyone is from Mass and New Hampshire, they're all Red Sox fans, and they generally are mean to NY sports team fans. Students either go to class in A&F looking apparel, or pajamas/UNH wear. Many students are politically active, and I have encountered a wide range of democrats, republicans, and confused people like me.

Michelle

The student body I feel has a fair amount of diversity. Definitely in the aspect of race but I do not know how much each student varies socially. Most students wear sweatspants to class, especially to the earlier classes. But there are students who do get ready and are put together

Jackie

I do not feel I am exposed to a very diverse population at UNH but, again, as a nursing major I am basically only exposed to the people in my own senior class. This class includes only three males and about 73 females. Most of the time students wear jeans and sweatshirts to class. Most of the people in the our class have gotten relatively close over the past couple of years, nursing seems to have helped us bond. I feel as though I am unable to describe four tables in the dining hall because it feels as though it has been so long since I have interacted with people other than those in my major.

Rach

I feel like the students here are very open minded and excepting but there is not the biggest amount of diversity. I dont think many people would feel out of place. There are a bunch of different groups and clubs where you could meet people that have the same interests as someone new. Different types of students do interact especially in classes but mostly stay with their friends during free time. Most UNH students seem to be from somewhere in New England. Some students are politically aware and some are not involved at all.

Sarah

I think that UNH is not a very diverse school, but I do not think someone would feel out of place here. Most students wear sweats, or jeans to class. Most students I have met are from the East Coast and mainly New England. I think that a lot of students I have met are politically aware and active. People voice their opinion, as I have seen rally's etc.

Tristan

There are so many different kinds of students at UNH that no one would feel out of place.

Andy

I dont think any student would feel out of place here. There is such a diversity of people on campus. I mean sure, there are minorities, and the population is mostly white, but there is someone from every background here. That's why I love it. Most people are from middle class here. Politically speaking, I think the UNH population is more towards the left than the right.

Jackie

Honestly, the student body here is not very diverse. The majority of the student population is white. However, there is a great effort on campus to promote diversity among the students. Most of the students at UNH are either from New New Hampshire or Massachusetts. I am from New Jersey, so I am kind of the outkast.

Abby

One thing about UNH is that its not especially racially diverse. Because most of its students come from within New Hampshire, and New Hampshire is not a very diverse state anyway. But mostly different types of students interact well with each other.

Rach

This student body tries to be very diverse and seems to be very accepting. Students seem to interact well when in classes but then outside of classes all the teams and clubs seem to stay mostly within their own groups. I dont think anyone would feel out of place at UNH. I feel like it is a big enough school that most people would be able to find their own friends and groups have associate with. There are a lot of students that are very politically aware on this campus and they like to all work together around campus. Some people get dressed very nicely for every class as if they were going to a job interview, but most people just wear scrubs or jeans and hoodies because we have what seems like a long and cold and wet winter.

Hayley

The student body is somewhat diverse. However, there seems to be more white people than any other race. Different types of students interact though. Most UNH students are from the Northeast however there are a lot of students from other parts of the country. There are all types of financial backgrounds from UNH.

Ryan

hardly and racial diversity at unh but there is a place for almost every person on this campus with a wide variety of activities that cater to those people that might otherwise feel like an outsider if these activities were not around like multi-cultural sororities or spots teams...

Gene

Since being involved in the Greek Community I have become more aware of the Student Organizations on campus and how they give a variety of interests to the individuals of the UNH campus.

Brianna

There is not an extremely diverse student body at UNH to be honest. It seems to me the majority of students are white and from New England. Though I have met a range of people from other places, races, ethnic backgrounds, and sexual orientations. I know there are student groups for all sorts of things for people to be a part of. Dressing up for class is not a main priority. The going trend for the girls seems to be jeans or leggings with some UGG boots, and a t-shirt or sweatshirt. Going out on the weekends is a dressier affair but I wouldn't worry about prep time for class, I rarely put on makeup during the week. I'm sure some people come from money but I don't really see it as an issue, it's hard to flaunt off how rich your parents are when you're living in the same sized dorm room as everyone else, so everyone comes out pretty equally.

Ryan

The student body is very large here. There are many different groups of people you can choose to become friends with. THere is someone here for everyone at UNH.

Sarah

The campus isn't very diverse. Though, i don't know if thats a bad thing. There are plenty of groups for different races, religions, LGBT etc. People tend to stick to what they are comfortable with. People of common races or financial backgrounds tend to stick together.

Michelle

I think that different types of students do interact however UNH isn't a campus that provides a huge range of diversity in terms of groups on campus. I have become more aware of students campaigning etc as I have become more involved and been out on the campus more.

Racheal

I have not experienced first-hand any sort of interactions with specific groups of students on campus.

Ryan

I dont have much experience with different groups around campus. Compared to Umass where i attended my first year of college, the racial differences are far less at UNH. I can't say who would feel out of place if I've never been in their position. I think that many students are more politically aware than myself but I dont usually talk about it with my friends.
