University of New Hampshire-Main Campus Top Questions

What are the academics like at your school?

Sarah

My major is small so i have my classes with all the same people and professors. I hate the options for gen eds.

Michelle

My professors do my know name and I have enjoyed the opportunity to be in smaller classes with the same professors to build relationships. UNH is a pretty big school however it gets smaller with every activity/group you associate with. It's so much easier to make friends, network, and enjoy your time here if you are involved. It also makes it go by very fast.

Racheal

Most of my classes are large lectures, however all have a lab portion. I do not believe that my professors in large lectures know my name, but am fairly certain that the TA's in my lab sections do, as they spend the most one on one time with students. Depending on the students major or career goals I would say that students here are fairly competetive in looking for internships, and obtaining honor roll status.

Ryan

My professors know my name in my smaller classes. My favorite class at this point would have to be my American Wilderness class because its laid back and the professor is awesome, its also the most unique. Students here study a lot I always see students putting time in on the books. I'm a part of the WSBE program and while it is difficult, it's good knowing that I will come out with a respectable degree. The program is definitely geared toward getting a job afterwards and making ties with local businesses now.

Nicole

Class sizes are okay at UNH. I prefer the smaller classes. I have had 4 "Lecture" Classes so far, with an average of 250 students. This is hard for me, because my teacher doesn't always know how hard I try, and I feel like they have too many students to worry about. I feel like it's harder to keep up with when it comes to work. My communication classes are the hardest. My favorite class so far was Technology, Criminology and Society taught by Kevin O'Shea. I am currently still Undeclared, but I am almost positive that I want to Double Major in Justice Studies (and I don't know the other major yet!) and minor in Spanish. I think that UNH is challenging.. which is a good thing I suppose!

Becca

When I first began attending UNH I was majoring in business at the Whittemore School of Business. I recently changed over to Communications this semester because even though WSBE is an excellent school I just didn't see myself pursuing a career in this. My favorite class so far has been Interpersonal because I can relate it to every day life and it is very intriging. I am always studying hard for my classes and the library is always packed so I would say most UNH students study a lot also. Professors of the classes I have taken always provide office hours and help students in and out of class. I think UNH's academic requirements are above average and thats what I love about UNH. I love a challenge and I don't think college should be easy.

Katie

I dont think that any of my professors know my name, all my classes are large. I like germs, hated intro to humanities. I study the night before a test. I have only had two classes where attendence even mattered, so participiation doesnt really matter, espeically since the teachers dont know who you are. I dont know if therye competitive, im not. My major is psychology but I am going to drop it, none of the courses have inerested my enough to keep it. I dont spend tiem with professors out of class. No opinion on their requirements.

Steph

Since I am a pre-med/ biology major a lot of my classes are huge classes, but the smaller classes I have taken the teachers def. make an effot to get to know you. Class participation is very commong, and all teachers make it obvious that they want their students to succeed. If you are paarticulary close with one teacher, they will help you out even if it's not the class they teach.

Meghan

I'm currently a business student in the Whittemore School of Business with my focus on Accounting and Management. As you get more involved with your major your classes will get smaller and professors will know your name. As far as gen-eds go most are in huge lecture halls and you use clickers to check in for attendence. In the Whittemore School students are very competitive and will challenge you. My biggest complaint is there isn't very much help in the business school with connections to getting internships, you are basically on your own in that department.

Ashley

lots of course to choose from. Always different options for times and when you would like to take a course. Met some amazing professors who really care about the students. I never felt lost in the classroom. You can make what you want of it. The course business statistics is ridiculously hard, and most students fail it once.

Katie

academics are taken serious, I do a lot of work, some majors are harder then ever, freshman year classes are big but in senior year classes are personal and small, dont do a lot to help us find a job

Ryan

I do not think my professors know my name. My favorite class at UNH is all of my RMP classes. I think they are great. My least favorite were all of my science classes. I think students study alot because the work load is alot. I think that some students are competitive because you always want to do better then your friends. I love the way our classes are taking 4- four credit classes. I feel that I get more out of my classes and really get to in involved with each class.

Laura

In my classes, professors know your name since it's such a small major. There are only about 60 students in my grade in my major (mechanical engineering). The students work hard and work together for the most part, because you have to. The work is tough, and some students can get by, but you have to pull your weight to succeed and pass the classes. The classes are well taught, but are not spaced out well in my major. Also, the general education classes are usually extremely easy if you go to class and do a minimal amount of work. It's almost pathetic that we have to take some of them because I think most of the people that go here are capable of much more. Education at UNH is not, in general, geared toward getting a job, which is very frustrating. It's more focused to learning the basics and the techniques and skills needed, and getting a job comes with this. Career services is not helpful in giving students good opportunities for jobs or helping students choose the best company for them. Good internships are hard to come by with career services, and really only are found through knowing a contact within the company.

Ryan

sie of classes are good.... most are small once you get into your major, i think an education at UNH is better then a lot of other college (of course excluding ivy-league), compared to the otehr school my sisters and friends attend, the academic requirements are the same. i do however, believe the career center could be better.

Ashley

Freshman classes are too big, but as I got further along, I enjoyed my classes more.

Ryan

Some of the small classes that I have allow me to build a relationship with my professors but its difficult to succeed in a lecture hall. My favorite classes are Ed 500 and Personality with Bobby Eckstein. My least favorite was Intro to Mass Comm. with B. James. Some students study the night before an exam but lots of my friends study weeks in advance. Students are competitive but I believe it to being a good thing. Again, I wish that we could attain a teaching certificate while going through the undergraduate program.

Jaime

I like my major classes, gen eds are boring though.

Emily

The only professors that know my name are the ones from small classes. If it is a big lecuture there is no chance that they would know my name. My favorite class so far at UNH has defintily been Top promotion and Advertising. It was so interesting and hands on i feel i learned a lot and enjoyed it.

Mireille

The classes aren't bad really. I haven't had any huge lectures and in the smaller ones the professors are really good at knowing peoples names. Most intro classes are easy which is kind of good since usually they aren't classes anyone is really interested in taking. I think most professors try really hard to get students to participate and if this doesn't work it's only because of the attitude of the students. I'd say every professor I've had has been very accesible either through e-mail or they're more than willing to meet for office hours. I think the academic requirements are good- everyone should have to take core classes to experience everything. More than anything I think all the resources for a successful life during and after college are there, most people just don't utilize them.

Andy

Many of my classes are large lecture halls so it is difficult for professors to know my name. My favorite class is french because I like learning a new language. My least favorite class is anthropology because I find it dry. This campus is full of students cramming themselves in the library because they live in the library all day and night. This makes the students very competitive because the grades are so high here. The most unique class I have ever taken has been Mass Communication because it makes the media a much more deeper topic than the superficial conversation that is out there. My major is Communications and I am currently trying to become a business minor. The major is very difficult to get into because it is so popular and the entry level classes have been a challenge.

Nicole

I am in WSBE, the business school, which is great and challenging. I think the professor for the most part really care about the school and the students. The best part is having professors bring in outside knowledge, contacts and contribute to student organizations.

Colleen

In some of your classes professors will know you name, that usually will happen in your junior or senior as your classes begin to get more major specific. Students do a lot of studing here, the library is always jammed. Class participation is common and becomes more common as your class get smaller when they become major specific as said before. The most unique class ive taken is one im taken now, Forensic Psychology, its very different then other classes and very interesting.

Kate

I think UNH has a pretty good academic system. There are options between large lecture halls and small discussion groups to cater to whatever may suit your individual preferences. My personal major, English/Journalism, is wonderful; I'm close to my professors and feel comfortable talking with my advisor about my future plans and goals.

Sean

Most professors know your names after freshman year. Once you get into more personal classes you know professors more because of smaller classes. Students arent really competitive. Communication major is great accept our secretary isnt the most pleasant person in the world. No i dont no spend time with professors out of class. UNH could be better at gearing students toward getting a job.

Jackie

In the beginning years I had very large classes and the teachers didn't know my name. Now that I'm in the smaller 20 - people classes I wish the teacher didn't know my name. I rarely study, but that's probably why I don't do so well in classes. My favorite class was making babies...probably the easiest class I have ever taken. My least favorite was probably Humanities 401 love and sex in lituratue, sure it sounds like a blast but really it's the dumbest class you'll find on campus, too much reading of old books and finding sex in them. I'm a math ed major and my dept is pretty small i know the name of most of the people in my major so it's pretty ideal.

Shannon

favorite class: making babies with karen niland least favorite class: anthropology i've never been to a professor's office hours, academic standards aren't too bad.

Jordan

I think the professors at UNH are AMAZING. I have heard complaints about a few but my personal experiences have been nothing but positive. They are really passionate about their research and are inspiring to students. There are definitely some students that have intellecutal conversations outside of class but the majority don't engage in this after classes are over. I am Spanih major and I am very satisfied with the department. The only complaint I've heard is that the Granada program isn't very well run, but I am chosing to study abroad through a different program. I am also an International Affairs major and am very pleased so far. I think the education at UNH definitely prepares students for a future career.

Mary

Yes, professors know mhy name. My favorite class is a literature class. My least favorite was logic. Students study a high amount. Class participation is decent, but not overwhelming. Yes, many students have intellectual conversations outside of the classroom. Students are not competitive. The most unique class I have ever taken was a class called Arts in Society in which we took field trips to see plays and concerts. The English Department is good, although I only really like a few of the professors. The academic requirements are too rigid. I feel it is sometimes more geared towards a career than education for its own sake.

Bridget

All of my classes have been larger than 50 students; I do not mind though. My professors have all been incredible.

Ann

Many of my professors are familiar with my name. My favorite class is Sociology of fashion, and Sociological analysis. My least favorite class was Finite Mathematics. Students seem diligent about their studies, all resources for studying are packed for the most part. Class participation seems to be quite common among my classes smaller in size. I'm sad to report that I hear few intellectual conversations outside the class atmosphere, and some conversations inside the class atmosphere are lacking as well. Students seem to be competitive overall. Sociology of Fashion is the most unique class i've ever taken. I am extremely pleased with my department (sociology), the staff and faculty are dedicated and teach material effectively and with enthusiasm. I meet with professors outside of class once or more each semester. I'm confused on a few academic requirements, and feel as thought some are not applicable to my life, or have been covered previously, or in other courses. I enjoy UNHs less career oriented path. As a transfer student from a career oriented school, UNH offers a much broader approach to education and is giving me a much more well-rounded education, which seems to be helping me greatly in my personal and career knowledge.

Ray

General Education classes that are in a big lecture hall can be hard to get to know your professor. A lot of classes in my major are smaller and you can get to know the professors and classmates. I have found that TA's can be really helpful especially if you are having trouble in a class. In Communication Sciences and Disorders our goal as undergrads is to get a base education of the science so our focus is in getting into grad school. Grad school is geared more towards getting a job since a masters is the entry level requirement to be a speech language pathologist.

Ainsley

Some professors know my name, mostly only profs in my major. My favorite class involved a professor that was extremely knowledgable, available outside of class, very organized, and provided several study resources. Students are not too competitivce and class participation does not happen to often because we have such large class sizes.

Megan

For my major, because it is a pre-professional science major, all of my classes are intro and basic classes, which means they are HUGE. All of my classes this semester have lectures with over 150 people. This does not bother me, because I know that as I move on in my studies, the classes will become more personal. In my major students are very competitive because veterinary school is so hard to get into. It is important to do more than just get good grades so you can stand out. As of right now, my classes are pretty boring, but I cannot expect much more at this point. My reward, as I see it, for going through the motions my freshman year, will be more interesting classes and classes with more students who share my passions.

Quinn

Students at UNH are not academically centered. Professors are great, but students interested in doing well is not obvious. This is reflected in the easy courses. UNH is not towards getting a job. The career and internship service is really lacking. They recommend working at summer camps, not interning at major institutions or businesses.

Amanda

I belong to the largest major on this campus, and I am a quote-unquote "psychology superstar". I have been a teacher's assistant. I have been a reasearch assistant. I am now doing my own honors thesis. I am doing the honors within major program. I have received a $3500 grant to conduct my research from UROP. I have taken extra courses every semester and know the majority of my professors well (minus general education courses- which have 200-500 lecture class sizes). My favorite two courses have been my "healthy psychology" course- and "counseling" course. I highly believe in using the "ratemyprofessor.com" resource to research strong professors from unfair/difficult ones. I am in the Golden Key International Honor Society because my GPA is usually around a 3.5- but last semester I scored a 3.9. Students are not really competitive with each other- I think thats more high school- but we are competitive, because at this stage in the game- you're competing for a job when your GPA gets slapped on your transcript. If you dont take your schoolwork seriously, why are you in college? This school is huge. If you want to succeed academically- you need to get to know the receptionist of your department (the psych receptionist, Robyn, has helped me more times than I could count)- you need to get to know your advisor- you need to go to your professors office hours and ask questions- basically, you need to SHOW you care- and not just be a name on the roster. If you are in the Whittemore School of Business, you are definitely going to walk away with a job here very easily... otherwise, be prepared to do a little more independent networking. But the Career Services in Hood House are AMAZING. I have been there several times to sit down and talk about my future options. They have given me many resources to work with- and have even offerred to help locate potential employers.

Emily

My professors all know my name but I dont have any lectures this semester. Those are the classe where the professors dont know your name. It depends on the student how often they study. I see my professors out of class all the time because of my clinical experience.

Sarah

The higher level courses have less people in them. The lecture classes can have upwards of 300 people which is nice for certain subjects. Being an English major, I am prone to having smaller discussion run classes. My lecture classes were all for my gen ed classes. I rarely ever study and find that procrastination is my worst enemy. I have met with my professors on need based basis and have never had a problem with one professor at UNH. I feel as if I am more learning in my classes than being prepared for the outside world or a career in the English field.

Kristin

As a second semester sophomore, I have only had two classes so far of over 40 people. I think part of this is due to the fact that I'm an English major, but whatever the reason, it's been great. My professors have gotten to know me, and all of them have been very accessible outside of class. For me, the transition to college schoolwork was pretty easy. Freshman year especially- I felt like my AP classes senior year of high school were harder than my freshman classes. The way college classes are set up gives you so much more free time than in high school, and I really like that a lot because I can budget my time whenever I want to to get my work done.

Rachel

There are a variety of classes at UNH. I've heard amazing stories, and some horror stories about kids hating classes. Coming in as a freshman, you will have to take some larger lecture classes, but I like them. You can sit in the back and pass out, or you can choose to listen. Most of the material is interesting, because you can finally pick to study something that you want to, whereas in high school you're forced to take classes that you'd rather die than to go to. A lot of professors give out their personal information so you can reach them whenever. Most professors make a valiant effort to get to know their students. Of course there are general education requirements, but there are a lot of ways to pass them. If you're not a science person, you can take classes like "Germs" and "Making Babies" that do not have labs. A lot of people study here. People here are pretty competitive when it comes to school, especially in the business school. The huge difference concerning academics that differs from high school, is that you only get out of it what you put in. You can choose not to do your work, but then you realize you're paying a crazy amount of money to fail. Students seem to understand this right away. I am a Communications/International Affairs major. The communications major is pretty common here. As an IA major, I love seeing the different kinds of professors I get. I had one from Russia, one from Greece, and one who was an ambassador for a country, who spoke several languages. All professors have office hours or you can call to sit down at a different time. I've even heard of professors having pasta dinners before finals! The education at UNH is geared toward learning AND getting a job. There is a lot of academic advising and tutoring places if you're having any trouble. The Hood House has plenty of references if you need help getting jobs. They review resumes, have internship/career fairs, and mock interview days.
