What are the most popular student activities/groups?

Racheal

Some of the most popular groups are the sports teams and those who play intramural sports. I met my closest friends through joining a sorority and from study partners from class.

Ryan

I dont really know about most popular groups, maybe the football team and the well known frats on campus. I'm involved with the greek life here as a member of alpha phi sorority and its been a good experience for me. I think athletic events should more attended by the students. I'm no good with dating. I met my closet friends by joining the sorority this year. I'd say most people party 3 nights a week. If I'm awake at 2 a.m. on a Tuesday most likely its because I have school work. To me fraternities and sororities are important because its large part of everything I do here on campus. It keeps me busy. Last weekend I celebrated my BFF's bday on Thursday, had sober sister bowling on Friday with the girls in the house, and Saturday made my way to a couple different parties. On a Saturday night that doesnt involve drinking? I dont know sleep maybe.

Nicole

Greek Life is very popular on campus. Although only a small percentage is Greek, I feel like for the most part we are respected, and many people come to our events. Sports are also of course a huge thing. Even if a person can't make a team, intermurals are huge. I met most of my friends from either my sorority or my first semester dorm. Doors being open helped. I also met other friends during Rush and Classes! I think Fraternities and Sororities have a name to upkeep, and set a good example, because Greek life is definitely watched more closely than some other organizations. I go home a lot on the weekends, but I also try not to drink during the week. I still go to Frat parties and drinking events and not drink. It's good because I can take care of my friends/sisters.

Becca

I think greek life is very important on campus. I am not just saying this because I am a sorority member but I think that greek live is very popular on campus and we bring a lot to the table. We are always holding philanthropy events and participating in events in the community. We are always raising money for charities and helping others out. Other events that are popular are athletic. Whenever there is a football game or hockey game, good luck driving around on campus. There is tons of traffic and students everywhere. There is so much excitement and everyone supporting our amazing sports teams. There are other things that you can do on a Saturday night that doesn't involve drinking; the MUB often holds sober events that students can go to. Last weekend we had a sober sister even and all of my sorority went bowling then came back to the house and shared stories. UNH isn't all about going out and partying. There are also many things to do off campus like go shopping at the Fox Run Mall, out to dinner, or head over to Portsmouth.

Katie

Hockey is probably the most popular sport. Im on Alpha Phi, which is probably the most popular sosority. Some people leave their doors open. Guest speakers I dont think are to popular, if theater is popular its only because teachers make you go, and it dpeends what sport it is. at 2am on a tuesday- watching tv, Evets - homecoming, greek week. I think frats and sororities are important. Last weekend I went home. You could go to a game, or stay in, or do something that a resident hall sponsors.

Steph

The open doors in dorms really depend on what floor yo uare on and who you live around, but for the most part doors are always open and everyone is always friendly. I am involved in a sorority and I am a pre med major and am involved in the leadership fraternity as well along with working every week and I still among all that find time to go out on the weekends, and my sorority is a huge part of my life. There are also lots of things that the dorms and the campus as a whole plans that doesn't invovled drinking every weekend and most of the week nights, so there is something to do for everyone.

Meghan

I'm in Chi Omega but greek like only makes up about 8{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the campus. It doesn't control the school but it helps you get involved and gives great leadership oppourtunities. Partying on campus is like a job. People generally go out Tuesday through Saturday night especially if you are 21. Tuesday is bar night, Thursdays are huge on campus, Friday is usually slower, and then Saturday is huge again. If you don't want to be apart of the drinking scene the MUB which is the building in the center of campus has plenty of activities scheduled every weekend from casino nights, movies, bands, and speakers. I met my close friends outside of Chi Omega my freshman year all of which lived in my hall and then I met all the girls who are in my house. Off campus you have Portsmouth which is really pretty town that has a great downtown, restaurants, shopping and then you have your basic mall the next town over. When it gets warmer everyone goes to the beaches.

Ashley

People go to the bars once they turn 21. Campus use to be more of a party school. People definately don't go out as much.

Katie

the most popular organizations are sports teams and greek system, alpha phi sorority, huge part of my life, shaped my college career, a lot of stereotypes, dorms are very open I loved living in the freshman dorms, at 2am on the weekends i am at a frat partying after the bars, homecoming is the best, I party 4 nights a week

Katie

Ryan

I am involved with greek life. I think that we do alot and do not get credit for it. Hockey and football are the most popular. I think people party 2-3 times a week. I think that fraternities and sororities are extremely important they give you an experience you wont be able to find anywhere else. You grow such close bond with people and networking is a plus.

Laura

I think the Greek system is pretty large on campus, but I wouldn't say they're the most popular. The Greek system gets a bad reputation because of the fraternities that have parties but rarely participate in any philanthropy events or attend other non-greek events. On campus, it depends on what dorm you're in, but in general it's hard to make friends unless you're a freshman. People seem to have their group of friends by the time sophomore year comes around, and it's hard to make friends after that. Going to UNH is tough for in-state students sometimes because a lot of kids from the same high school end up here, and they stay friends with their friends from HS, so by sophomore year when you're tired of them it's hard to make new friends.

Ryan

i think intermereal sports are bery popular on campus- even though i dont play sports. i am in alpha phi. when i lived in a dorm, for the most part, people left thier dorms open. i met my closet friend freshmen year-they all lived on the same floor as me...

Ashley

The most popular groups are football players, hockey team, cheerleaders, and Greeks.

Ryan

I am involved in Alpha Phi at UNH. Its a great organization that has a lot ot offer. I didnt leave my door open in the dorms because i barely knew anyone on my floor. Football and Hockey games are popular athletic events. I met my closest friends during rush.

Emily

I dont think it is possible to say who is the most "popular" i think it all depends on what you are involved in. This campus is so big that there is no one popular group of people. I am involved with the Chi Omega sorority. From my experience, students do not leave their doors open in the dorms. I never lived in a freshman only dorm and i feel that maybe there students might be more open to meeting new people and leaving their doors open, but no not where i have ever lived. If i am awake at 2am on tuesday i would most likely be watching tv or talking with my rommate. I also think the amount of parting depends on the group of people they hang out with and the kind of people they are. I have been to other schools and see way more parting than goes on at UNH and they are not even on the list of party schools. I think that as far as off campus parties there may be a lot but as far as oncampus parties i do not think it is big. Some saturday nights i just like to go out to dinner and a movie with friends and take a night to just relax. I rarley go off campus but if i do it is to shop or see a movie or go out to dinner or go to the ocean.

Mireille

Greek life is huge but everyone is represented in various groups. Athletics are also big, especially hockey and the athletes always get special recognition or treatment. My closest friends are in my sorority and basically everything I do socially comes from that. Saturday night non-drinking events are ALWAYS in the MUB and there's definitely something going on there.

Andy

Without a doubt the most prevalent groups on this campus are the Greeks because they are involved in so many things. For instance, most of my time is dedicated to campus activities involving my sorority, Chi Omega. Most of the students in the dorms leave their doors open because they feel so safe. The athletic events here are ridiculously popular because we usually win our games. I met my closest friends through my classes. If I was awake at 2 am on a Tuesday I would be wandering around my dorm talking to anyone that had their door open. A lot of people party on campus but nothing gets too out of control.

Nicole

Tons to do, tons to get involved such as school organizations, outside interests, leadership series, outside knowledge conferences and workshops, sports, greek life etc.

Colleen

There isnt one organization that is more popular then any other but I would say that the greek community and athletics are the two largest orgs on campus. I am currently in a sorority something i thought i would never do and have loved every minute of it. There is something here for everyone.

Kate

I'm a sister in a sorority on campus and I love it. Personally, I don't know what students who are not Greek do with their lives. Being in a sorority has completely shaped the rest of my college career: I met my friends, I attend numerous speeches, events, seminars as well as participate in community service and philanthropy projects every week. I've never been busier. There is always something to do on the weekend when you're Greek. Most of my guy friends are in fraternities and conviently live right across the street. I personally did not enjoy living in the dorms, I moved into my sorority house in the beginning of my sophomore year and it's so much better. We have a cleaning service, an in-house chef and free parking! It's even cheaper than the dorms!

Sean

Hockey and Football are the most predominant sports on campus. I am involved with Communication Students for Social networking where we strive to communicate with different businesses, have them come in and share their experiences. We also host workshops and job fairs for those interested in certain carreer paths. I met my closest friends in the freshman dorms. traditions every year is to get drunk on cinco de mayo. Go tailgaiting for home football games. frats and sororities are predominant on campus but interest dissolves when you become upperclassman.

Jackie

SCOPE is pretty cool, they bring concerts. CAB is pretty awesome they have lots of events. Freshman leave their doors open after that no one really does unless you know most of the people on the floor. This is taking way too long I thought it would be filling in circles. sorry

Shannon

hockey is huge here. students usually don't leave their doors open, but you will probably meet your close friends in your dorms. UNH is a huge party school, and the frats here have parties pretty much every night. the school offers a lot to do on the weekends that doesnt involve drinking, but most people don't participate in those events.

Jordan

Hockey is #1. Other teams/groups kind of pale in comparison. Greek life is important at UNH. I'm involved with Project Sunshine. It's a great group totally led by students. We visit local hospitals and children's homes to do art projects with the kids. We've also helped out at Pumpkin Fest in Boston and events at the Portsmouth Children's Museum. As far as open doors, it depends on the dorm I think. Congreve is really quiet and Williamson is crazy. I live in Smith and there's a strong sense of community compared to other dorms. It's also much nicer inside. I met my closest friends in my freshman dorm and my classes. If I'm awake at 2:00am on a Tuesday night I'm talking to friends. There's a large group of people on campus that party Thursday-Sunday but there's also a much smaller group that doesn't party at all. Lots are in between. There's always a game or event at the MUB to go to on a Saturday night, which I really appreciate.

Bridget

My experience here has been really fun. Last year I participated in Project LEAD. The campus always feels alive- there is always something to do. I am currently living in the Gables and I like it much better than dorm life.

Ann

Football and men's hockey. Students leave door open. Athletic events which feature males are popular. Lacking guest speakers or advertisement for guest speakers. I met my closest friends through living arrangements, high school friends, and friends of friends. If i'm awake at 2 a.m. tuesday I'm doing homework for class. People party a great deal at UNH, weekdays included. I do not think that fraternities/sororities are important. Last weekend I took the train to boston and saw the ballet with my sociological analysis class. You can go see a movie at the MUB theater. Off campus I visit surrounding friends, and visit nearby attractions i.e. beach, maine.

Ray

I think getting involved in activities at UNH is a great way to meet people and expand your connections here. The MUB offers a lot of speakers, movies and shows. Most of them are free which is great being a college student. As far at community in the dorms leaving your doors open is a great way to make friends. Some of my best friends here at school are the people I lived with in the dorms. My floor was really friendly and we always had our doors open it made for a better environment.

Ainsley

Students sometimes leave their doors open, its dependent on the individual floors. Athletic events are very popular. The dating scene mostly revolves around drinking, hanging out in big groups, hanging out in dorms/apts. Not so much going out on dates. People party pretty much 2-3 times a week on avg. Frats/Sororities are fairly important. I did homework and went out drinking last weekend. On a saturday night i can go to the movies, do homework, go out to eat with friends, hang out in my room.

Megan

There are a lot of sport teams, and many club teams. I played on my dorm's broomball team, which is a HUGE sport here at UNH. If you like ice and are not afraid of a few bruises, this is the sport for you! Most of my closest friends I met in my dorm. I also have close friends in my classes. On a Saturday night you'll find us watching movies and having a great time, no drinking involved. UNH has VERY STRICT drinking laws when it comes to drinking in dorms. If you are under 21, you should not drink in the dorm. It is just a stupid thing to do. Even though you might hear that other colleges don't care, do not think UNH is like that. Frats and sororities are kind of a big part of camups, but only for those who like the party scene. There are some frats and sororities that do not go along with that typical image, and are professional organizations.

Amanda

Greeks = most popular. I think we have something ridiculous- like 30 sororities and frats? The group I'm involved in- is called the group thats friends with everyone and breaks down the invisible walls of the immature cliques. Freshmen dorms are the place to be. They're the best bet for making friends fast (Williamson & Christianson). Stoke was fun for most- but it sucked for me, because me and my roommate were practically the only two freshmen on a sophomore floor of already established friends. Hockey is huge- football is huge- everything else gets left out of the lime light. They need more musical acts here. 50 cent was here ages ago. In my time I've seen The Roots, Maroon 5, Allison & Krauss, and Ludacris (awesome). Dating for me, has been a f*cking joke on this campus. The boys think with their dicks- not their heads or hearts- but I think that's socially expected. I've learned not to take any one seriously. Expect the unexpected- and that way you're not left feeling disappointed. I have had a somewhat serious boyfriend for a few months- so i'm not saying its not impossible- but in general i think dating someone serious in college is a big no-no. Pretty much all my friends have cheated- or been cheated on. I think its better to be single, carefree, and date as much as you can... that way you know what to look for- and to look out for- when we do get to finding someone special. I met my closest friends through friends- its all about networking. I met most of my friends- by learning to get over if someone was going to like/love/hate me- and just being me. If I'm awake at 2am on a Tuesday night (tuesday boozeday)... I am probably either eating Campco pizza with a side of ranch dressing, making out with one of my guy friends, or giggling away in my livingroom with my girlfriends. Homecoming is huge here. Halloween is probably bigger than Christmas- people start planning their outfits months in advance. Red Sox games and patriot games bring the national guard and swat teams in due to our rioting. People party Sunday Fundays, Tuesday boozedays, Wednesdays at the Knot, Thursday is the biggest bar night- some take friday off- and Saturday is usally house parties. Who you are- and what your priorities are- affects your party life. This past weekend was amazing. I went to the Brewery Lane Tavern in Portsmouth Wednesday night for trivia night (me & my girlfriends beat our male friends/opponents). Thursday was a typical bar night where I ended up in scorps basement pretending I was Beyonce. Friday we had a legendary birthday party at my house- that didnt get busted- and brought all the cliques into one room at one time. Saturday night I went into Boston (1 hour drive) with my girls- got a hotel room in Cambridge with a view of the river- went to a nice dinner- hit the Gypsy bar- and danced the night away. If you dont want to drink on a Saturday night- get the hell off campus- to avoid the noise. Go to a movie. Go to dinner. Go bowling. Go ice skating. Go night skiing.

Emily

Sometimes students in dorms leave their doors open to chat with other residents. Football and Hockey are the most popular athletic events. Some people party 2-4 times a week others rarely do.

Sarah

The most popular groups are the sports teams and Greek system. Fraternities are always having parties and it isn't uncommon to go to the football house on a Saturday night to party. Tuesday and Thursday nights are huge bar nights on campus. Friday's are often dull and left to recover from the previous nights festivities. The MUB has a theater that often shows movies at discounted prices of $2 for movies that have yet to be released on DVD. That is one alternative to partake in on the weekends and hockey games start around 7pm and are guaranteed a great time. Living off campus, I feel as if I'm more disconnected from other events on campus but I know there is always flyers and emails informing students about campus events.

Kristin

People at UNH party a lot, but there are always plenty of other things to do if you aren't into that scene. I'm not much of a drinker myself, but most weekends the MUB has various events going on. They have two $2 movies playing every week (ones that are out of movie theaters but not yet on DVD), and there have been magicians, musicians, comedians, and other free events on various weekends, too.

Rachel

A lot of students at UNH participate in sports one way or another. Intermurals are huge here. Broomball is a favorite- it's where you run around on the ice in your sneakers and try to get a ball in the net. Athletic events are pretty popular, especially our hockey games. There are over 200 clubs on campus, and UNH says that as long as you have people to join your club, you can create your own. We have everything from musical groups to a club called "Extreme Grilling". We have a good amount of Greek life on campus. Personally, I met my best friends by living in the dorms together. There are so many different kinds of people on campus that you almost have to try to NOT make friends. A typical weekend for me consists of going out to parties and hanging out with friends. There are a lot of events on campus if you do not like to go out and drink. We have a lot of comedians and musicians come through here. A lot of people stay on campus for the weekends.
