University of New Hampshire-Main Campus Top Questions

What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

Erin

I transferred to this school as a sophmore and was not allowed to live in the dorms(although i was given an on-campus apartment). This made meeting people outside of my major more difficult.

Christina

The worst thing about the University of New Hampshire is the lack of diversity. The majority of students come from white, middle-class families. Very few minorities can be seen walking around campus. I feel this doesn't provide students with an accurate depiction of the real world. The real world is filled with people of different colors and socio-economic backgrounds. I feel college is the time to be exposed to the differences of society because you need to learn to accept all types of people. and the only way to achieve this, is to be exposed to it.

Sarah

The school works very much like a business, meaning that a lot of focus is on how much money they can get out of the state or anyone else. This isn't often seen until you get a job and get to know the full-time workers better. Many full-time workers are not given any benefits at all. Faculty get benefits, of course. It's the staff that are intentionally overlooked.

Autumn

For the amount of money I spend on housing, I really don't think I am getting what I pay for. Though I have to admit that UNH is making improvements on their housing , now offering more options and newer buildings, but still, our dorms could improve much more. A lot of rooms are small and poorly designed, and I think they are over priced.

Emma

I think the financial aid that the school provides could be more specific to need based. I feel that although it is a public institution, there should be more money given to students with more need based.

Meaghan

The worst thing is probably the lack of close parking. Also the off-campus housing prices are VERY high.

Jessica

The worst thing would probably be the excessive partying. Although I am not involved with this part of campus life, many people do get involved and it can ruin their education.

John

alcohol policies, they do not solve or prevent anything

David

The police have cracked down on the party scene alot resulting in a lot of arrests for minor problems.

Jessica

The worst thing about my highschool, in my opinion, would be the class sizes of most gen-eds. I like to meet people in class, but I can only meet kids in my major since the classes are small, but I was to step outside the box and meet knew people, but it's almost impossible out of a class of 300 kids.

Andrea

The worst thing about UNH is that there is not much diversity.

Melissa

Cost.

Jennifer

Fees and prices of books. But I think it's the same at every school.

Ashley

I think the worst thing abuot my school is the general education requirements necessary for graduation. There are far too many general education requirements and not enough guidance from advisors for making sure you complete them all in a timely fashion. Rather than adding to and enriching your experience as an undergradute, the fairly rigid general education requirements add stress and make it difficult to complete major requirements in time, especially as a science major. It also leaves no time to take elective type courses that may be of interest to you.

Lauren

Too much drinking. Not enough alternative weekend night activities.

John

How strict it has gotten with underage drinking in the on-campus dorms. My roomates got evicted from the dorms after their first incident which I thought was a little excessive.

Monique

The incredible waste of money on materialistic items like the pewter mascot, road repair using bricks which need to be replaced again the next year and the horrible out-of-state tuiton rate. It seems as though the courses that you need are only offered during selected semesters and I wish I knew which professors were the ones I should have had as Freshman & Sophomore. College put me in debt for almost 50k. I wish my college didn't run so much like a business! We also need more recognition for our veterans who are also students among us!

Shawn

The worst thing about my school is the disciplinary system, especially in dealing with on-campus housing.

Caitlin

The drinking problem is by far the worst thing about my school. For someone who only drinks on occasion for social reasons, not to get drunk, it is hard to find friends with similar interests. If the school was more strict on their policies, that may weed out the people who are in college strictly for the parties and availability to alcohol.

Samantha

I wish the school had about 6,000 kids, rather than 12,000

Rachael

I think the diversity of students could improve some. There is not a huge aray of racial backgrounds in my mind. If there were a larger amount of hispanics, african-americans, asians, and any other non-caucasions, the school would have a better sense of community in my mind.

Lisa

The worst thing about UNH is the construction - but once it's finished the campus will be even better than before!

Nicholas

The reputation of it being a large party school where students only drink, because people automatically assume that you fall into the stereotype that they have of students at the school.

Matthew

The worst thing about UNH is the cold harsh winters. I am use to cold snowy winters being form New England. But for anyone who wants to attend UNH from a warmer part of the country is in for a cold wake up call come winter time. That is the only bad thing about UNH, and after one winter I believe any new student would be adjusted to the climate.

Evin

chicks who tan too much

Ashley

The dorm rooms and the food are the worst things about UNH. The dorm rooms are really small and the buildings can be incredibly loud during the weekend. Most semesters I feel like I'm living in a closet. It's hard to find food in the dining halls that have low fat low cholesterol options.

Sean

The excessive drinking is the worst thing about my school - there is little else to do.
