What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Nicholas

I've learned so much about myself, including how creative I can be with music even when working with others. I now have a better background in the literary department thanks to one of my favorite english professors. Also, I've been given great opportunities to interact with the school in having a job on campus and making new friends has never been easier.

Kira

I have learned so much, in college. My first 2 years at community college were not good. I didn't attended class, I even failed some classes; I just didn't take my college career seriously. After getting mediocre grades and disappointing my family and siblings. I soon realized that the rest of my life would be a result of my college experience! I now take my education very seriously. I have been accepted to Baptist Bible College where I will be double majoring in Biblical studies and Biblical counseling. I am excited to begin my classes at the university in the fall and I plan to put all of my effort into my studies!

Well by attending Bowie State University, I been exposed to a new world of diversity and education. The instrutors are there to assist the students by any means. Theres over 50 organizations to commendate each students interest and always looking for more organizations to be establish. Attending BSU its a honor because their academics prepares us for life time career and to do bigger and better things. Personally, my major is computer science and I'm using this degree to become a librarian and learning how to do intensivy research of African history.

Luan

This college is good overall.

Ria

Attending college and entering a career to help the community has been one of my dreams since I was a little girl. Finding the "perfect" college was difficult but University of North Texas has been "perfect " for me. The university promotes going green and we are known as the "mean green". I am proud to be a part of this school in helping to save our resources and giving back to the community through services. I also believe this school has helped to give a good education with experienced and knowledgeable professors on campus. There are also so many resources on campus available to students such The Learning Center, Writing Lab, Online Assistance, etc. The university works hard to see their students successful. My success is because of my hardwork and the guidance of my professors and other faculty members.

Christina

The experience I have received from my first semester in college is that I have learned how to manage my time more efficiently, so now I am not in a hurry to complete task, and having to finish them on the last minute. I have also made friends that will be near for a life time. Seen the feeling of being in a zone were the school spirit is enormous. Its been valuable to attend because at this college campus to me it seems that you do get your moneys worth, it is a bit expensive for some of us like myself, so we need scholarships to attend. The professors are great they help you as much as you can and encourage you to keep trying. GO MEAN GREEN!

Kristen

My college experience has enabled me to be a contributing part of a welcoming and cohesive community. I have been steeped in my chosen major (psychology) and possess a deep understanding of relevant subject matter and am well-equipped to continuously educate myself on updates in the field. I was admitted to a highly competitive Masters Counsling Psychology program based on the experience and credentials I obtained at the University of North Texas.

HV

My college experience has given me a great start on life outside of high school. I am able to better communicate with teachers and my peers and have been given a great deal of responsibility. I have been able to balance getting my associates degree while completing high school and keeping a job. I'm constantly learning and feel that I am getting further in life as my education continues. By the end of my college experience I hope to become a better citizen by contributing to society in my career and through volunteer work. College has given me many valuable skills that will affect me for the rest of my life.

Veronica

Experance and knowledge, of my subject and for my future. I learned that work can move you up but hard work can take you to the top. That a day can be boring since there are always changes and that the world is vast but the roads around it are small, leading to meeting people from your past as new ones greet you everyday. That watching the world around you can lead to new sights and amazing happenings, and that one should be brave and take a chance, but always have a back up plan. It gets you ready for the road into the future, but from the saftey of a air bagged car. It grows character.

Tara

I have learned valuable time management skills in college, and these will help me for the rest of my life.

Michael

There are many aspects of my college experience that will be with me always. The people I've met, the subjects I've encountered, and the ability to keep away from jobs that don't provide careers. Attending college was important because it exposed me to new ideas and ways of thinking about subjects that were not previously considered. Just like my childhood, my adolescence, and early adulthood, my experience in college has molded me into the man I am today. I am proud to say I am an alumnus from the University of North Texas.

Kristin

I've learned that I get what I take from college. My amount of effort put in is equal to the amount of reward I will recieve in the end. The only reall way to be successful is to do above and beyond what is required, and put my all in to it.

Elizabeth

From my college experience, I have attained work ethic. I have attained the ability to keep working at something, even if I fail at it the first time. Time management, higher learning, and the ability to communicate have also been things that I will leave this campus with once I graduate. I have learned to try new things, and to thank those around me who keep pushing me on, and refuse to let me stop, because they know that I can do better than I myself believe that I can. These things I find valuable to both my remaining time on this campus, and also to the time that I will spend out on my own once I leave. I feel that they will aid me in the working field, and in life. I am certain that without attending this campus, I would not have achieved these things that I have.

Amal

I've been able to express my views in college. I've learn to be more independent and responsible. If i had chose not to attend college, my life wouldn't have been the same. I wouldn't be focused in life. I wouldn't have any goals in life to follow and goals are what keeps a person going. I'm more focused than ever before. I know what I want in life, a successful career of becoming a dentist which wouldn't have been possible without going to college. I'm glad i made this decision of continuing my studies and hopefully i'll be where i want to be very soon.

Deavon

Moderate losw cost, friendly and open minded, and sized correctly for good student learning. Education, while sometimes lacking in assitace is intense and will ultimatly prove valuable.

Diego

It's been an amazing experience. I'm thankful for everything I've learned. I've met incredible individuals who inspired me to develop my potential to the maximum and beyond. I paid my way through college without loans only state grants that covered half of my tuition. This taught me to appreciate the value of education and helped me become independent, and determined to improve myself. It tested me not only in the academic sense but in the physical and spiritual as well. It helped me understand different perspectives of life and become an optimistic human being. I learned from my mistakes and not to be afraid of making them. When things didn't work out I tried them again and if I didn't succeed I changed my strategy but never gave up. I learned that in order to be respected I had to respect myself first. I learned that no matter the circumstances hard work always pays off, perhaps not the way, or as soon we are expecting but at the end if we don't give up the results will flourish. I know that critical thinking and respect is essential in the growth of humanity.

Noel

I've gotten a tangible sense that mhy dream choice for a career is possible. i've recieved great education experience with great and encouragin people around me. I don't want this to come close to ending and so I need this this scholarship, the chance to return to school has been a powerful thing in my life when for the past few years my family has been struggling and I've had to help pick up the slack, but I don't want to slow down in school. A small scholarship helped me get back to school, I just need more to keep me going.

Curtis

So far I have learned a lot more about people from different places and backrounds along with being able to experience new things such as college football games, the band, and much more as new theings continue to surprise me as I constantly find something new and fun to do each and every day. This has been valuable for me mainly because without all of this I wouldn't be too sure if I would be able to work to the best of my ability because I would seclude myself due to not knowing anyone.

evelyn

College its a whole different situation. Its the best experience I have ever had in my life so far. I learned how to appreciate and operate the values that my parents taught me while I was home. I also learned to be more responsible of my actions, and live more independently has helped me to be more mature and conscious. College is also very fun. Theres many things that you can do here, that you didn't or couldn't do during High School. You meet tons of new people and live a completely different life. I cannot wait untill I have my degree and do what Im looking forward to in my future. College life is the best !

Sharon

Juliette

I have gotten many valuable experiences in my college experience such as the new and higher knowledge I have learned in my courses and the experience of being able to say that I am attending college is worth the many obstacles that I am faced with. It has been valuable to attend because it is just one step closer to achieving my goals and dreams of becoming successful.

Arielle

For most of my life, I grew up in a small town where it was common to find a person with just as similar beliefs as the next. Most residents were Christian, conservative, and Caucasian who carefully refrained from the taboos of society. With this way of life, all was simple and went unquestioned. As a result of this, I could have never prepared myself for the sprawling environment I was about to experience as a freshman at the University of North Texas. With just as simple as walking to my first class, I had been exposed to more conflicting ideas, beliefs, and values then I had ever seen in my previous entire eighteen years of living in the same small town. Whether it was women from the feminist organization telling me to appreciate my body or students from the Republican committee telling me why I should vote for Rick Perry as the governor, every person I saw at college allowed me to challenge my beliefs and question not only my society, but also who I am as a person. All of this exposure has allowed me to become the well-rounded, educated, and stronger individual that I am today.

Kate

It has given me an oppertunity to expand my knowledge and receive a degree in the accounting fied. Sacred Heart University has helped me receive an internship at KPMG accounting firm. they have also given me an oppertunity to play dividsion 1 tennis, where i have made so many friends.

Ivan

First of all I'm in a multicultural service/social fraternity, so I consider that one of the most valuable experiences because it has helped amplify the value of my other experiences. I have done community service that prior to I had never seen myself doing. I've been a volunteer counselor at a weekend camp for mentally disabled people from ages 18+. I have volunteered for organizations such as CIS, Habitat For Humanity, Humane Society, CASA, etc. In high school there wasnt a need to study outside of school to recieve good grades, and now I've surprised myself by the discipline I have displayed when it comes to completing my weekly study hours. My networking and social life have significantly increased, which as a hospitality management major is definitely valuable experience. For example, I've learned to become social with a great diversity of individuals, and although knowledge is important, networking (who you know) is equally if not more important for fresh "inexperienced" graduates.

Carisa

A sense of self. I have come into my own while at UNT. I have made many friends I can count on and have had experience someone only dreams of. I am fortunate to have the college experience I currently have and even more so, I am thankful for it. This is such a valuable experience for me because of not only the education I have obtained but the self awareness of who I am and who I want to be in the future. Knowing what I want for myself out of life is utterly rewarding.

Cora

My college experience has opened my eyes to in a sense the "real world" in comparison to high school or living at home under the "watchful eye" of my parents. I have met many life-long friends, and forged relationships with my teachers as well as mentors in my major. I enjoy being involved in activities on campus, meeting with other students who have the same goals and dreams. I like knowing that I am making my own imprint on the world, seperate from that of my family, and I believe getting an education and undegoing the college experience is helping me to achieve all of this.

Kiara

I started my college experience while still in high school as a dual enrollment student at a community college, and I discovered that it was way different from high school. Of course I still had the classroom-like environment as I did in high school, but outside the classroom was very different. In college, we don't have a bell schedule so I have the responsibility of getting to class on time. I feel that I have alot more freedom in college because I have the opportunity to choose when and what time I want my classes, where I want to eat (whether its on or off campus), and what activities I want to join on campus. Extra-curricular activities make the college life more enjoyable such as vollunteering for activities such as fall social event I took part in at my community college. I will be transferring to a larger university in the spring, and I'm very excited about joining the activities that they offer on their campus such as the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, or the church campus choir. I'm a freshman in college now, and I'm exited for my future in college amd beyond!

Dereka

I've had the opportunity to learn so much, both career and real world related. I believe i will leave with a sense of overall fulfillment: educated, socially receptive, and ambitious. These are the characteristics in which I believe will have me destined for success. Thus far, I have had the privilege to work with many great educators. With that, I feel as if that aspect of my goal is well on its way.

Anton

Out of the college experience I hace gotton a whole knew out look on the world. I have realized that you have to be more serious, responsible, and you can not do stuff on your own time. I feel college has been valuable to attend because its getting you ready for your career. All the hard work you do in college perpares you for all the hard work and late nights you will have in your job career. The college experience is great., I feel its showing me that hard work does pay off. Futhermore out of the college experience i have gained patience as a person.

Amanda

My university experience has allowed me to explore all the options available to me as a young person pursuing the world. Most importantly as a college student, I have learned how to relate to all different types of people. This is more important to me than any kind of book knowledge that I could ever gain. Life is about our relationships with people. Its how you deal with them that will make the most difference. I guarantee the thing I will remember most when I graduate is not Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, but who I meet and what they taught me about the world through their own experiences.

Cordia

I have gotten so much valuable experiences out of my college stay that people could ask me about the time I spent at UNT. Going here has been a blessing in disguise really. I didn't think at first making the grades would be simple. I attended Junior College thruogh North Central Texas College. That is why I always reccomend taking classes or even a semester at a local Jr. College. It helped see that not only studying but preseervance comes from within.

Amanda

My college experience at Gainesville State College so far has been amazing. I've learn many things that I didn't know going in. I learned how easy it is to connect to my fellow peers and how to use every resources that is available to me. This is the one college that actually cares about your progress and helps make sure you are on the right track to graduation. Attending Gainesville has made my experience here welcoming to the fact that I can to this college not knowing anyone and as a very shy person to coming here and coming out knowing many. My campus has many activities to help you get comfortable to the new surrounds and the whole college experience which is why my college experience has been amazing and welcoming.

Joshua

I have gotten out of my college experience so much experience already in the field of office software applications. One of the classes I am going for is Computer Applications. What I am learning in there is how to use and operate one of the popular suites Microsoft Office efficiently and proficiently. This is the biggest experience I will learn because if I can operate how to use word processing, spreadsheet, and database management, then I can work on the tougher aspects of telecommunications. One major aspect is working and setting up huge and heavy servers that need to add records of users to its database. This is essential because we are no longer having sign-in sheets or using punch cards at my college. Being able to successfully create and manage a virtual environment is critical to the success of the actual environment. Needing something dynamic and controllable in computers and technology complements the static and uncontrollable actual world. My experience will help me control others' frustration with helping them do things that they cannot barely do on their own.

Abigail

I was the first in my family to attend college, and by no means was it an easy road getting to where I am now. As a freshman, I went to Concordia University in Austin, TX, thinking that I had to get away from my small north Texas town. The college campus was gorgeous, but the school was not the right fit. It was also a religious affiliated school, and the college was not very diverse in its student body or organizations on campus. During winter break, I was talking with an old friend from high school who was attending the University of North Texas. I was telling him about Concordia and how much I wished I went to a school that offered Journalism, which was my passion in high school. He told me how great the UNT Journalism department was, and that same night I submitted my application to the school. I had never even been to Denton before I moved in for classes in the fall of 2009. Now, I wished I had come here as a freshman. I love UNT and Denton more and more every day. I wish I could stay here for ever.

Amy

I grew up in a kind of bubble, i went to school with the same kids i went to church with, whom also happened to all live near me. We all did vacations together, played soccer together and later competed. So, college for me, meant that all of that went out the window i got exposed to people from different cultures, communities, backrounds. I was able to really experience, whether it be food or launguage or just movies. I got to truly taste and see the world around me and what i saw was bright color and what i tasted was alive. Having that oppourtunity has altered my perception of all things, and i look forward being able to finish out my time and bring this capacity in me to the world around me.

Lauren

At my first year of college I have gained many new friendships and life experiences that will continue to grow and help me through the years to come. Some of those people could be future employers and others could just be there for me when I need someone to study with. When I say "life experiences" I mean skills such as overcoming procrastination, meeting new people, finding your way around, and general problem solving skills. There are many bumps, or problems, on the college road, and I think it has been valuable to attend because it teaches you how to maneuver around those bumps, keep going, and come out strong, knowing much more than you did before. So, to conclude, the college experience is unforgettable and you will soon find out that the simple life experiences are just as valuable as the education you are actually paying for.

Katrina

Although my college experience isn't complete yet, I believe it has already begun to change the way I look at life and other people. I have begun to open up to new experiences that I wouldn't have tried before college. I have been on many adventures and have even explored new places, but most of all, becoming independent as a woman has been the most of what I have gotten out of college, which makes this whole experience valuable to me.

Amber

I have gained a deeper insight into what my true calling is for my career. I have gained experiences that I have already used in my jobs I'm holding while attending school. I have learned to manage my time more efficently through juggling school work, classes, and two part time jobs. I have discovered that the core classes are important along with your program classes in the overall degree you will earn. It is important to be a well rounded person. So even if you are not majoring in science, politics, or history, it is important that you have a basic understanding of key aspects in all areas to be an active responsible member of society. As an education major I look at the overall degree curriculum as how can I teach the minds of tomorrow without understanding the minds of the past.

Lauren

I've realized that there is so much more to do, see, feel, experience, taste, and try in the world than I could have ever imagined. In my one and a half years of college so far, I've been involved in a community garden, gone on a trip to Minnesota over spring break to help out the less fortunate, started writing my first novel, and been able to perform for hundreds of different people. I've made so many wonderful, long lasting friendships, and discovered all the passion and zest for life that there was hidden within me. At UNT, I've observed planets and stars through fancy telescopes, met people from several different countries, learned how to lessen my "footprint" on the Earth, and sharpen my scholarly skills. Being away at school has opened my eyes to all of the beauty there is out in the world, waiting to be explored. My freshman year was tough, changing, losing friends, making new ones, figuring myself out; but this past semester has been the most fantastic experience of my life. The only word I can think to describe it is simply golden. It's been a golden year indeed.

Fernando

During this last year of college I have passed throught many personal and educational experiences. It is hard as a student and as a human, yet, it is possible to obtain the knowledge we need to move forward. Our power is based on knowledge not money, so I believe college will continue providing valuable information for our studies and for our future lifes. If their is something that I learned at college, it was that I should become a leader and do what is right for the future of our country. To help each other in our time of need and to study or the train will leave the station. I believe knowledge is power and because of this, I'd say it has been valuable to attend because it brings a new step to becoming a young intelligent adult.

Jesse

I have revieved two very powerful things in my past two years of school here at the University of North Texas. The first is a value of myself. My freshman year was a long and stressful year, being a thousand miles away from home. I was really stressed and pressured to do well in everything. I would have classified myself a a soft person. I never spoke up for myself and I always needed someone to push me to do what I needed to do. My freshman year I learned this is the real world and it was time to "hunker down." I got my head on strait and really learned how to time manage and keep a heavy work load with out letting it stress me out. The other major think I learned from my two years at school was how to push my work ethic. I cam into school thinking practicing my instrument for two hours was a lot. I am now up to practicing six hours a day on top of all of my classes and homework. My GPA is going up and I find my social life getting better by the day.

Carolyn

Whithen the short time that I have been a college student I've come to terms with becoming an adult and loving myself. You learn to cope and adjust to the world outside of the walls of your parents house. This is the greatest life lesson a person can learn. If you don't love yourself the journey to being the best person you can be is a lot more challenging. Certainly, my lesson is not complete but I'm making outstanding progess. I owe this to the daily situations I am subjected to at my university.

Zuleyma

Growing up in my community, students were more likely to get jobs instead of college degrees. In high school, I decided I wanted to go to college and sought opportunities to get there. All through college I volunteered at high risk schools, later on conducting research that focused on addressing ways to reduce the achievement gap. Through the research, I saw how salient higher education is in order to break the cycle of poverty and close the achievement gap. In college I experienced first hand the responsibilities that come with knowledge. The more I learned about the problems in low-income communities, the more I saw it my responsibility to help bring about the changes these areas need. In college I found my purpose in life, and my overall undergraduate experience has equipped me with the tools needed to pursue my path onto graduate school research. By working to reduce the achievement gap, as an advocate, researcher, professor, and policy shaper, I will be able to give back to the diverse low-income communities I come from. My value to the education system rests on my knowledge and experiences therefore making my undergraduate career the most valuable tool I possess.

Richard

College is a valuable experience. My first year spent at the University of North Texas is a year I will never forget. I grew as an artist and as a person and was shaped into a responsible adult. I have always aspired for greatness and have always known the value of hard work. Before college though, I did not know what true hard work was. The most valuable thing I have learned is that I do have the ability to succeed. I have worked very diligently through my first year. Achieving a 3.97 GPA after 39 hours of class is not an easy thing to do. My involvement in the Student Government Association has taught me that students really can make a difference on campus. My involvement in the Communities in Schools program made it possible to see that I live a fortunate life and any time I can give to others is time well spent. My involvement has been and continues to be extensive. Though everything I do has had a positive impact on not only myself but also those around me. I have gotten more out of my college experience than can be expressed in 200 words.

Ryan

An education which will continue to open doors for the rest of my life.

Wyneisha

College so far has definately made me grow from a girl into a woman. There are things when it comes to living on your own that sometimes you just aren't ready to tackle, but once you get to college it's survival of the fittess. I have gone through some really tough times trying to step into adulthood without "mommy" there to hold my hand every step of the way, but I am grateful for every one of those experiences because they have all been steps towards being able to survive on my own once I leave the campus walls. Going to college is extremely valuable. You meet life-long friends, get an education that is going to assist you in living a stable financially set life, allows you to experience any and everything you desire, and most importantly makes you grow up, and those things are just irreplaceable. I love college and all the hard studying, partying, heart-ache, happiness, and laughter that comes with it!

Brianna

My college expirence has really shown me what it's like to function in a real world. I spent my high school career working full time, and working on graduating early, and when I got to UNT, I really learned how to work, go to school, and STILL have time for a social life; something I was sure lacking before. UNT has truly become the home I never thought I would have. This school is so worthy of every penny put into it. It makes everyone feel welcome and accepted, it makes sure that you've got a well balanced diet, enough opportunities to exercize to last you a lifetime, and TONS of student activities. It is truly the ultimate college to go to. I looked at many schools before, and nothing offered the expirience that I knew I would get at the University of North Texas.

Ashley

My college experience has been a life changing adventure. Attending college seems to be thrown around leisurely these days and taken for granted. It cannot be expressed how imperative a college education is for the future of all youth. My college experience has made me see the responsibilities it entails and the amazing knowledge one can take in. I am going to school to be a teacher and going through college, I see how important a teacher is in a student's life. A teacher can take a lesson plan and make it an experience, filling a student's mind with exceptional material. I have grasped so much knowledge throughout my college education that I would not have learned anywhere else. Especially paying for my college education myself, one can really appreciate each class and work that much harder for something, knowing it is all up to them. I have found friends and peers within my classes of all ethnic backrounds, ages and majors. It was very fufiling to hear everyone's different situation and reason for being in college, because everyone has their own goals and dreams, but college is where everyone is brought together to achieve them.

Christina

The first year of college has created an opportunity for me to realize how to be independent. Because of college, I must learn to choose my own classes, manage my own time, take care of my own supplies, and being to rely on myself--rather than my parents. Attending college has also allowed me to open up more and ease into friendships much more easily than in the previous years. I have discovered that it is a great meeting ground for friends and to network, since you must take so many classes and you're constantly mixed up with different groups of people. I'm glad I made the decision to go to college because I want to continue to learn: about biology, about neurogenesis, about Chinese history, but most importantly, about life.

Danielle

As mentioned before, college is the place where you find out who you are, figure out who your true friends really are, and submerge yourself in your future. Attending UNT has broken me out of my shell and let me experience life like it really is. I have gained many friends that i would have never imagined of obtaining earlier in life. Even though i would have rathered go to school than missing it when i was sick as a kid, out of the 12 years of attending school, this is the one time I have truly wanted to attend and do everthing it takes to do so. I learn something new everyday wether is has to do with my carrer, life, or creative ways to save money and the earth with it. I am truely honored to be attending UNT, learning the information i am learning, and meeting the people that I am meeting. With only two years left, I know i have alot more to learn and many people to meet, and with no fear!
