University of North Texas Top Questions

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Jeffery

I've been blessed to acquire some of the most intriguing, fufilling and enriching experiences within the College of Music at the University of North Texas. Attending this university has truly offered me opportunities impossible most anywhere else on earth and, especially as a music major, I feel nothing short of absolutely fortunate to be able to take advantage of such a vast array of resources which will guide me throughout my college life as well as beyond, in establishing the musician I aspire to be and the citizen of the world I will surely be. Each day I step through the threshold to a classroom, rehearsal or performance facility, study session or just a gathering with friends, almost always I enter as a curious explorer and leave an enlightened conqueror renewed in spirit and confidence. It is this confidence which I am sure will carry me forth onto great deeds in the future, and it is in this confidence that I recommend my alma mater to any willing heart that aspires to maximize to capacity his or her will to establish a rightful place in 21st century society.

I have really gotten to know myself as a student while attending college here, and I've found that because of this, I study better, make better use of my time, and get better grades. I am proud to say that I made Dean's List this past semester and it only makes me want to do better and continue excelling as I have been. I have learned so much, no only about the subjects in school, but about myself as a student and as a person which is why it has been extremely valuable for me to attend.

Brittany

I have received much more from my college experience then just the knowledge I gained from the classes. You think you can take care of yourself and make all the decisions about your life, but I realized how many decsions my parents made for me a constant basis. From the minor things like deciding what food you wanted to buy to more major decisions like what doctor do you want to go to and where do you want to take your car to get fixed. I had always counted on my parents to make the important decisions for me, but college forces you to make those decisions yourself because you could be in a completely different state then your parents. Also college life teaches you to how to handle things yourself; like going to the bank, managing your own money, and looking around for an apartment or house; many things your parents did for you. College life really prepares you for everyday life; everything you do is your decision, wheter you get a job or whether or not you go to class. Every decision now is your responsibility and every decison now affects your life a great deal more.

I transferred to the University of North Texas from a community college. The difference between the two has been amazing. I have learned so much and matured so much just from one year at this school. I have made friends that I know I will have forever and I am receivng an education that I know can take me very far in the career path I want to be on. The teachers at UNT are extremely knowledgable and help students whenever they are needed. In this day and age a college education is the most important thing one can do, and I know that I am getting my moneys worth at North Texas. One always knows that they picked the right school when they cannot picture themselves going anywhere else. I love my school and I could not transfer for anything. I know I made the right decision and I will always be a strong supporter of the green and white.

My undergarduate studies and student employment at Cameron University have helped me grow in becoming a professional in the Computer Science and Mathematics fields. My recent school projects include designing and implementing a website for the MathCom Organization and using Software Engineering principles to develop a database-driven website for the Green Committee. These projects have strengthened my love for these fields and have enhanced my learning as a student and professional. I hope to become a software engineer in a major computing company and also instruct part-time Math tutoring classes. Pursuing my undergraduate degrees at Cameron University was tough financially; however, I overcame these circumstances, making excellent use of my limited resources and graduated with top honors. I believe that the atmosphere at the Graduate School at UNT is conducive to my educational and social development and will help achieve my future career goal.

Feeling like you are being a part of the "university tradition" is an experience of higher education that is thousands of years old. I am so thankful that this establishment exists and I was able to be a part of it. College helped me realize what my passion is in life and gave me a way to pursue that passion for a career. I'm such a strong believer that we are meant to work for things in life that not only affect us and our well-being, but can change the world. Regardless of anyone's definition of "the college experience," the most important thing is learning to be your own person, finding your own place, and growing into somebody that has purpose.

Alyssa

I have learned how to be more independent and make friends more easily.

Jessica

I have learned so many new things and refreshed my love for learning. Meeting so many new people from different ethnic backgrounds has helped me to appreciate many different cultures. Time management was never my forte, but I have learned how to manage my time in an excellent fashion since starting college, and it makes me feel good to be able to do so.

Chelsea

The greatest occurance that has come out of my college experience is being able to find out who I really am. In a world where you can be anyone you want to be and be accepted by your peers has a way of revealing one's character. Without the diversity of UNT I doubt I would have been able to find out who I was as easily.

Many individuals believe that if one attends a community college, that the information learned and the experience earned is of no value. But that is not true! A community college bonds just what its name describes, a community. There are individuals from different backgrounds, ages, and majors, yet they all are joined in the community. A community college can allow for individuals to receive an education for a fairly low price, take classes around a work schedule, as well as be within distance to home. The professors are attentive, and give their information for after hours if students need help. Each student feels like a person, not a number. A community college allows for student organizations and a sense of belonging. There are many classes and majors to explore, as well as opportunities. A community college could be the first crucial step to helping individuals reach their goals.

My name is John Shipman . I am a single father of a wonderful five year old son, divorced for three years, and a supervisor of a fabrication shop. I have become more successful in my job by the little college that I have had. I have been a supervisor of a harvesting company and have worked my way from the bottom to the top of the fabrication company that I am working at right now. I feel that I am at the highest point in my job right now and that is the reason I feel I need more schooling to have myself a 'CAREER'. a Job was explained to me when I was in eighth grade and that was "Just Over Broke" that is what I feel right now in my life. I am an over achiever in all aspects of my life but quit college almost ten years ago thinking I would be a partner in a company. That fell through and I can honestly say I have learned alot from my experience and I am now going to take the opprotunity to advance my education and get my civil engeerning degree. Time is on our side. JOHNSHIPMAN

Jillian

I have gained a lot out of my college experience. I have learned how to live away from home and my family and how to do things on my own. I have gained many new life-long friends in college along with a spectacular education and am learning new things every day just by interacting with different people on campus. It has been valuable because I have/ will learn life skills in the career field once I graduate. I have learned so much through classes and people I am surrounded by every day and I hope to keep experiencing this until I graduate the University of North Texas.

Kristy

College has helped me exploer all the possibiltys i have in the world and has taught me major life lessons i find extremely vauable.

David

I enjoy most the comradery and spirit of the school. I think it's amazing that everyone is so proud, but yet very humble about going to UNT. Most everyone gets along and every weekend there is something to do or somewhere to go around Denton. The city isn't large by any scale, but it's also not small. A very good mixture of both types of living. The school is very accessible and biker friendly for students who cannot afford POV's or are trying to save precious money on gas. I've had a good experience all the way around and look forward to eventually graduating with a respected degree and beginning a fruitful career in my field.

Nicholas

I've had the opportunity to meet with people from many diverse backgrounds and even generations. This makes for an invaluable experience and allows me to gain all kinds of empathy for others, which will be a valuable trait as an aspiring therapist. The college experience is something I would never take back, for I have had the chance to network with people from all walks of life, something that I would have been otherwise unable to actually do, and have learned many fascinating things, as well as picked up many philosophical strongpoints for arguments I may have later. It's been interesting to test myself both argumentatively and mentally in classes and other social situations, and see exactly how strong my own philosophical beliefs are held.

janitha

I went to a community college and though I got alot from Springfield Technical Community College, I regret not going to a four year school. I was accepted to a few of the schools I wanted to go to but instead I decided to stay home and take a postition as Store Manager at The Show Dept. I learned alot from the postition i acquired and want to move up in the retail field but I feel I lack the essential part of a college experience, being on your own. I would more than anything love to be living on campus and enjoying the life of a student. I however did learn how to manage work with school doing both as full time postitions.

Andrea

I learned more about social life and dealing with people than academia. I learned a lot in my classes as well, but more than anything, i walked away with life skills and people skills. That is invaluable to me because that will allow me to do any job I am interested in and prepares me for a family and the rest of my life.

Lacey

Attending college has been crucial to my success in life because it has opened up many oppurtunities for me to learn more and meet new people. I have gained multiple skills that I can use to advance quicker in my career in order to secure a better future for myself. Because of my college attendance I have options for better employment oppurtunities verses not going to college and working minimum wage with little chance of advancement. Going to college has given me confidence and I have been able to meet people who connect me with new and different oppurtunities that futher my future success.

Charlene

I have learned responsibility and gained a strong work ethic. I believe in myself and know that I can succeed. I always put my best forward in everything I do, and I've improved more than I thought I could musically, academically, socially and personally. Despite its shortcomings, I love my University because it has become my home, and I know I've gained a lot from my experiences here.

Matthew

My college experience is just beginning but so far it has been way better than high school though I wouldn't be where I am without high school. I am looking forward to the doors that will be opened during and after graduation.

paria

i think a college education is important today. There are many benefits to get quality education. One of them deals with your intellect. Being smarter, or having acquired and retained more knowledge than the average person, puts you way ahead of others on an everyday level. Not only will you benefit intellectually, but more than likely financially also. You can now support your desired lifestyle for yourself and your family.

Jonathan

I have realized that I need to attain a bachelor's degree in order to advance in the real world. In fact, some agencies are requiring a master's degree as well. I have learned that professors with real world experience are more inclined to be better teachers than those who are more focused in the academia aspect of the teaching field. You do attain more knowledge at a four year university and you learn that things are not as easy as most people make them out to be.

Genevieve

I've learned many things at UNT. I got my first job there and when you get a on campus job they are very understanding on how they know you are there for school first. With college and my job I've learned, basically, how to be an adult. Living on my own for the first time is a good example. The residence halls are good too. This is a great college because even though they are know for great grades, it is really mellow.

Louis

What i have gotten out of college is a wonderful and new experience. There were many challenges that I faced when first I came to college. Challenges such as making my own class schedule, finding a job on campus, socializing with new people, and trying to stay focused on class work. I can admit it was a power struggle because I was not use to the college life of staying up late studying and being social. I do believe it has been valuable to attend college because i have grown into a resposible person. I am able to time manage my study habits and I have learned how to say 'NO' to friends that want to party, when I have work to do. I continue to stay on track with time management skills because without it I will fail and be out of college. Therefore, I think college is a great experience for all individuals who want to broaden their horizon and further their education!

Mallory

When I was younger, I never thought I'd go to college. Not because I didn't want to, but because I thought we couldn't afford it. My Mom left my Dad,brother, and I and I never heard from her again. My Dad instantly had to be the Mom and the Dad, and paying for 2 kids the same age was tough. I prayed for God to help me, and he blessed my brother and I with being able to go to college. College has taught me to be mature and responsible, and I've found the person I truly am. College teaches me to cherish every moment I have there, and makes me excited to know that I will be successful in life. It gives me more confidence than I've ever had, and college will reward me in the future with a successful job and money to raise my family and never leave them. College has made me the confident, responsible, happy person that I am today and wouldn't want it any other way.

Megan

Above and beyond the history and math lessons, college has taught me a great deal about myself. With self-insight comes two options: to either turn away in denial or to face up to where you stand and make a conscious effort to become your ideal self. Having moved 900 miles from home and every familiar face I knew, I had little choice. College has made me realize that I have more control over my life than had ever previously occurred to me. At first I abused it, sleeping in, skipping class, eating junk food. And I quickly failed. Within months I had the epiphany that I am writing about now, and everything turned around. College revealed to me that my greatest goal in life is more than career success, financial gain, or a happy marriage. My aspiration is to be someone I would admire, not just now, but timelessly. This is not a dream like it might have been in middle school or high school, to be popular or funny or to provoke envy. This is a dream to be the person I never thought I would be, I never thought I was, but who I soon will become.

Ariana

My college experience has really taught me how to make friends and how to cooperate with people that do not neccesarily share the same views in life. I have also learned to be more open-minded about certain topics. Of course I have gained knowledge and understanding from many of the classes I have taken. It has been valuable to attend, not only for the teacher certification i strive for, but for the friends and people that I have met here that have helped me grow as a person.

Nicholas

My college experience so far has been very eye opening. I realize now the things that need to change about me as well as the reality of the difficulties that I'm facing. I'll likely never be a world renowned artist, and will more than likely have to settle for a life of comfortable obscurity. I don't mind this though. College has shown me that I have a lot of growing up to do, and that just because I understand the world around me and how it works, doesn't mean that I'm mature enough to just jump into it and handle it the way I've handled my life until now. It takes a lot of dedication and hard work to achieve your dreams, and in this world, only those willing to sacrifice and struggle truly have a chance at "making it". I've breezed through school my whole life, never really having to try hard at anything. After my first year in college, I realize that things aren't ever going to be that easy again, and if I expect to do something with my life I have to put forth the effort.

Christiana

I believe that my college experience presented me with the best and worst of what life has and i am glad that i know that i should never give up and fight to the end. My college experience taught me to be the best i can be and that there are always people there for you if you let them be. I learned that there is a time for everything. There is time to study, relax, party, and have fun. I interacted with people of different background and ethnicity from me. I meet incredible staff members that made my college experience one of the best. The staff member cared and had advice and a ear to lend when needed. I really enjoyed my college experience at the University of North Texas.

Nathan

I have great professors who are genuinely helpful and classmates that have become lifelong friends. College has been alot of hard, rewarding work. I have learned how to study like a professional. I look forward to putting the tools I have gained from this school into good use in the workforce. I am planning on going through graduate school, something I never thought I would want to do. My professors have inspired me to want to learn all that I can to be better equipped for the working world and life.

Raymond

First, the pride of getting into a known university. After that, the sheer amount of knowledge I gained from the professors here.

Victoria

At first, I believed that having to settle for a community college was a step back in my path. However, I have learned more from one and a half semesters at Coastal than I did in four years of high school. My music professor is an amazing professor and I believe that I am far from where I was before. Without her help and guidance, I would not be as prepared as I am to move on to a four-year university. Coastal is not a simple commmnity college. Each and every one of the professors there work their hardest to give their students a university level education. Although I thought it as a step back before, I now see it as a huge step forward. Without my experience at Coastal and the help of these amazing professors, I would not be where I am today.

Danielle

I just recently started college two months ago, so far i have learned so much and i am very excited to finally be doing what i have been wanting to do since i have graduated highschool. I have had some set backs that have kept me away from my goals in life but i can glady say im back on tack and attending on-campus college. I have a 6 months old daughter and im a single mom and going back to school was the best choice i have made. I didn't think i needed school intell i atucally had a kid a reliazed u cant get a decent Job with out having some kind of education towards it. This oppurtunity has givin me courage that i never thought i would have.

melissa

I have gotten a feeling of security form my College experience. As a recently seperated Mother of three children that is currently losing her house and doesn't have any recent work experience this has given me a new life. Not only does it make me feel like I and my children have a chance at a decent future but being around other like minded adults has made me realize that life can and will get better with hard work and dedication. One of the best experinces of being in College is seeing the campus wide newfound interest in Community Service. I found it incredible that I was actually given extra credit in my classes for being a Girl Scout leader for my daughter and her friends.

Blake

A great first semester with tons of new life long friends. A 3.4 GPA and a drive to get an even better one this semester. The University of North Texas is such a great school and the people that go here are reallly what makes this college what it is.

Nicholas

Six months ago, I was a senior in high school. My friends and I were on top of the world, and it seemed that nothing could stop our misguided ambition. The Summer passed, and we went our seperate ways. Some went across the state, others across the country. I however, stayed in our hometown of Allen, Texas, and went to a local Community College instead. I always thought to myself, "This isn't real, and this isn't legitimate. I'm only here to kill time, and get a few credits." Little did I know that my life would be changed in a matter of months. I expected my courses and teachers (Now professors) to be just like high school--easy going, laid-back, yet immersed in our goals. This was not the case. Instead, I was greeted by several men and women who treated me like an adult, and even allowed me the unearthly privalege to urinate without raising my hand for permission. No longer was I another kid trying to get a diploma; I was now an adult molding a future for the people I cared about, and above all, for myself. No experience rivals the college experience.

Jesse

The more I learn at school the more I can apply to my chosen career in the future and I'm studying a lot not just to learn the course of study but to see how other teachers teaching methods work for them and help students to understand the main subject of what is taught in class and if I decide to become a teacher like I planned it will assist me in becoming a better teacher in the future.

Avery

I have gotten many things so far out of my college experience and, suprisingly, I have only been going for half a year. Most important, I proved to myself that if I work hard and study then I can get well deserved grades on all my assignments and tests. From television it looks as if college is a breeze but I have learned that it takes a lot of devoted time and hard work to get the most possible out of each class. Attending college has shown me how to straighten out my priorities and how to juggle school, work, and friends. When I started my first semester I thought the order was friends, school, then work, but, I quickly reassessed what was important and put school first. Everyday of college is a learning experience and every day I pick up a fact that I would never of known before whether I learn it in class or just from people talking outside and to me that is exciting. Their is nothing more valuable then the knowledge attained while at school because their is no where else to gain that type of information.

Tiel

I am a wife, mother of four, full time student and I work part time as the Program Director for a local nonprofit. I have been at UNT for three semesters now and I have made the Deans list and maintained a 3.5 GPA the entire time. At UNT I have found everyone to be so helpful from the time I went on campus to apply for admission to the technical support department when I need help on the internet. I was able to take the many credits that I had from my associate?s degree and use them towards my bachelor's degree; this saved me time and money. The flexibility of courses and the diversity of degrees that UNT offers is what have really captivated me. I took classes during the summer and fall at the Dallas campus and now I am completely online. My degree in is nonprofit and human service management. The classes I have taken have allowed me to have real world experience and I feel confident that when I graduate I will be able to go into the workforce with working knowledge of the position I take.

Amy

The main thing I would tell myself is to be more outgoing. I am naturally a shy person and that has hindered in my making friends the first semester. I am really trying to come out of my shell and meet new people this semester. I would encourage my high-school self to be friendly and to take the initiative- start up conversations with people instead of waiting for them to talk to me. I would tell myself that I am the one that can make my college experience good or bad. Have a good attitude, be outgoing, work hard, and stand for what I believe in. Doing those things will make a college experience much more enjoyable and exciting- it's something to look forward to.

Ayana

I would tell myself that procratination gets you nothing but a huge headache. Although grades are important, study skills are even more so because when you get to college you don't necessarily have homework all the time. There are classes where you just have to study for the 4 tests you might have in the semester. I would also tell myself that it necessary to have a social life in college. You become very distant and depressed if all you do is go to school and do homework. Even if all you do is become involved in a sport or drama club that's all that is necessary. The last thing I would tell myself is that there is no use in stressing over the past. Everything happens the way it does for a reason. We make mistakes so we can learn from them. It is said best in the words of Robert Frost, "In three words I can sum up everything I've learned about life: It goes on."

Samantha

If I could go back and talk to myself as a senior the first thing I would advise myself to do is apply for more scholarships. Once I found out about the many scholarships through my college it was too late to apply. Another thing I would do is tell myself to apply and choose my school earlier. The earlier you apply and choose the more time you have to plan and the less stress you have during your senior year. I think if I would have made my decision earlier there is a greater chance that I would have found more scholarships. Also, I think knowing what school you are going to early helps you realize that your life will be changing and gives you more time to plan how you will adjust. Finally, I would advise myself to meet as many people when you first get to college because you have a greater chance of making more friends and that will help you enjoy college alot more. These are the three most important things I would advise myself to do if I could go back in time.

anthony

First pay attention , Really get math down , get great study habits, go online find grants and scholarships, try and get used to eat ramen noodles and peanut butter sandwichs for long periods of time. Take as many classes as possible to help with college , save alittle money period. Learn to listen and organize and know your personal information , have fun

Emilia

I would go back and tell myself to be more prepared! College life is so much different than what I was used to and need to walk out of my little box and meetmore people in high school, so that meeting people now would not be as hard. There are so many more people in college that are so mature and so different than what I've ever seen before. Just wake up and jump into the world presented to you.

Janel

Spend your money wisely and make attendance a priority.

Britton

Growing up in a military family, we moved around often. School became more difficult as I became less connected to the schools I attended and the people I went to school with. By the time I could build relationships it would be time to pack up and move. Moving during school is very difficult as you leave in the middle of one class to be stuck in the middle of another where you have to catch up and absorb as much as possible. It came to a point where I simply slipped through the cracks of the system and I essentially stopped putting forth the effort because I felt as the system was not stimulating me intellectually. The advice I would like to give myself is to set your goals and know where you want to go, not to hope you find your way eventually. I would also advise myself to question everything as I have found things cannot be taken at face value. I believe had I found the motivation from within, I would have been able to recieve a full scholarship soley on my ability to learn thus not having to work full-time during school.

Rachel

Dear Rachel, Let me let you in on a little secret... College is not as hard as your high school teachers have made it out to be! I know, it must be absolutely shocking to hear this, but know that it is very true. I know you have very good study habits and time management skills, so getting your homework done and giving yourself enough study time will not be difficult for you to get used to. The higher level courses you took in high school will definitely be helpful in giving you a little peak at what the work load will be like in college. Don't be afraid or nervous. There are two things though that you must make sure you do. First, spend as much time as possible with your family before you leave. Once you are away from them, you will be very suprised at how much you need them in your life. Two, don't be afraid to get to know your classmates! First semester I was very shy and reserved, and I didn't make very many friends. But this semester I am trying much harder! So you should too! Good Luck! Rachel

Chandra

If I was given the opportunity to go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior, I would advise myself to make sure that I attend college as soon as I graduated. Because every day I look back to the year I took off, I regret it more and more. At the time I was overwhelmed, the admission process for college was nothing like the admission process for high school and I felt like I had no one to help me because my mother was unable to finish school. Last year before the fall semester though, God sent me friends of the family experienced in the process that helped me and my mother apply me to the University of North Texas. Now as I sit here if I was given the chance I would definitely advise myself to power through the process and go to college as soon as possible.

Jacob

Well first I would tell myself to enjoy it while it lasted. Two years since I graduated, I still wish I was back at high school enjoying a simpler life. Each day that I have to pay rent and buy all of my own things makes me look back upon the time when I lived with my parents. I hated it at the time, but man it sure was cheaper. More importantly I would tell myself to get involved! I never really did anything in high school, or middle school for that matter. I am not currently taking classes, but working 40 hours a week still leaves me with a lot of free time, and now I feel that it is too late to get involved in anything. If i could go back and get involved I would feel much more inclined to do something other than work now that I have so much time on my hands. Lastly I would definitely tell myself to work less! Life is short and doesn't last long enough to work the days away. But now I find myself rarely enjoying life because I have to work so much.

Dolores

As clich? as this may sound, if I could go back in time and give myself advice about college, I would tell myself to get involved! Although I was involved in a sorority on campus, I wish I would have been more active with other on campus activities. There are so many different programs and clubs offered to students but limited numbers actually take advantage of them. My senior year I began to venture out and found a new love through the salsa dancing club. I found a healthy new hobby I can do for years to come but I wish I would have been more courageous and tried it out my freshman year so I could have gotten the full experience. I missed out in meeting so many more people and being exposed to so many more things. College is a time to find things out about yourself. You are allowed to have trials and errors. You are provided different cultures and activities that you can not find anywhere else. Take advantage of this. Find out what you like and dislike. But most of all, find out who you are.
