University of Washington-Seattle Campus Top Questions

Here's your chance: Say anything about your college!

David

I think my school is very diversified in terms of race, ethnicity, and personalities. Students are eager to share their information about jobs and interests with other students. School location in downtown Seattle also makes students somewhat surrounded with more job opportunities and social entertainments in comparison to other schools in Washington State. Also, students here at UW enjoys its great transpotation system which helps easy access to downtown Seattle and the campus.

Travis

Seattle is awesome. I have a combination of downtown and suburbia and it works quite well.

Ada

There's a lot of focus in research and sciences. However, UW is still strong in other areass such as the arts and humanities. It's close to downtown and nature at the same time. The campus is beautiful, especially when the cherry trees blossum. The libraries are wonderful and the engineering buildings have great facilities.

Hayley

It is incredibly diverse and therefore there are multitudes of on-campus events that you cannot find at any smaller university.

Logan

It's close enough to home that I can visit, but far enough that I am still independent.

Jessica

Although classes can be bigger than at smaller schools, faculty are experts in their fields and engaging teachers. Faculty do research that matters and gets recognized. There are several libraries on campus, lots of resources for research and expanding personal interests. Students are offered a really wide variety of departmental study abroad programs and foreign exchange programs and are encouraged to study abroad.

Sarah

This school is high in national and international rankings and is getting higher every year. The area is very liberal and since we are just outside a big city there are a lot of unique work and volunteer opportunities. My school allows you to design your own major (which you could not do at some of the other schools I looked at) and there are a lot of options for study areas and specializations. This school is diverse (thanks to being part of a big city) so that is a plus.

Paulo

Very liberal and accepting of all walks of life. It's easy to find your niche here. This school is fantastic for those who are geared towards the sciences. As well as other majors because it attracts many influential professionals from around the west coast.

Heidi

We have so many options on majors and so many resources to get to where we want.

Stephen

It's one of the few major research universities on the West Coast. Being in the middle of Seattle, it offers tremendous access to everything from night life to sports to hiking and skiing to cultural events. It also means that jobs are easy to find in any field. Housing varies from the very cheap to the very expensive. The campus is architecturally grand and has an incredible variety of trees and plant life. With more than 40,000 students (26,000 undergraduates), there are hundreds of registered organizations, and nearly every interest can be met here.

Cyrus

It's a huge inexespensive public school that is fun and familiar to me. Of course, that's not always desireable.

Lynda

It gives the small town feeling while still being in the center of a busy city.

Just a couple of final thoughts. Liberalism is a mental disorder and being polical correctness will weaken our constitution and our way of life. Uphold US Constitution. Also the only real racism I saw in most of the school I went to is the hatred that blacks have on whites. Last is affirmative action is bullshit.

Brianna

I loved UW. I had a great experience, and I hope to continue growing Husky Pride by attending grad school at UW. SAFETY: Safety has become more of a concern lately, but there's not much to worry about if you take advantage of services like the NightRide and NightWalk and avoid unsafe situations. The services are there to be used and you won't look like an idiot for using them now that crime rates are going up. (Don't panic: UW is still VERY safe, but I don't want to lie and pretend the rates of theft and armed robbery aren't going up slightly.)

Brianna

It's a fabulous school, very challenging but definitely worth it. Gives you an incredible education and it's a lot of fun!

This UW is like a small city within a city. It has that sort of impersonal vibe, usually, when you're walking through crowds on campus. Despite that, I really enjoy going to school here and I'm glad that I ultimately decided against some of the out-of-state-schools I was accepted at. One of the big perks of life on campus is the flora and fauna (it's always fun to stop for a second on the way to class and watch a squirrel try to eat an apple core that's nearly as large as him); this is a beautiful setting. As an undergrad student, you will probably feel that your only purpose at UW is to pay tuition as you are being herded through the system; it is the grad students who receive most of the support and attention. But once you get used to it, and enroll in higher level classes, you'll discover that what you think matters, too. Ultimately, I recommend the UW to students who want to achieve something, anything at all...

Harper

UW is the way to go! It's huge...but so worth it!

Ryan

It's a great school. I'm glad it's where I chose to go.

Brenda

I am getting tired of typing :)

Rory

The campus is like an oasis from the bussling city streets.

Harper

I LOVE UW!

Chris

Bottom line: if you want to do research/post-graduate or get into medical school, this is the place for you. If you want a 4-year and a job go elsewhere and find a better learning environment.

If you plan to enter into the University of Washington's EDGE program, interact with the professors. If you don't call them, they won't call you. It is just like anything else, you only get out what effort you put into it. In the case of the EDGE program, you get out about twice the effort you put in. I have found that they like to talk to the students and field e-mails about anything and will always get back to you with some kind of answer. Also, do not take two classes a quarter if you are working full time. I would suggest calling counsler before enrolling in classes to get an idea of what you are getting yourself into. So far my experience with the EDGE program has been much better than I think it would have been with a normal evening program anywhere else.

U.W. is a very good school. If you find your niche, you can really excel. The instructors are great and have amazing backgrounds. The area is beautiful with lots of things to do. And the area is affordable.

Amanda

When applying to a college consider the UW as your choice for school. There are endless opportunities here in our great city. If you are looking for work in any field, chances are that you can find what you are looking for right downtown or even as close as the University District. Don't let your golden opportunity pass you up!!

Dan

UW kicks ass

Morgan

Going to school in the city has its dangers (physical). Almost every week, there is an email from the police listing various crimes that have occurred recently. However, they almost all happen to people who walk alone at 2am. Some people are really stupid.

Dylan

There can be some strange folks, but overall there are some really nice people there from every corner of the world. If you want to learn you have to apply yourself or you could easily squander that hard earned school tuition and find a way to party it away.

Owen

Be prepared for the gloomy weather here and the long walks.

The English department has this requirements list that you have to meet to graduate from that department. While this is fine (and necessary), it's so silly to force students to take so many credits outside their major (90 credits). Being well-rounded is one thing, but I would rather be really focused and educated in my chosen field than take random natural world credits that don't allow me to delve very deeply into anything. Also, you have to take so many non-literature classes (theories and methodologies, criticism, blah blah) and most teachers in the English department do not have the faintest clue how to teach these subjects. As a result, I've taken a lot of BS theory classes at the expense of literature classes. Getting through the English major without reading ANY Faulkner, Hemingway, Conrad, Austen, Camus, Hawthorne, Melville (and on and on) ought to be criminal! In their place, I've developed a strong distaste for Barthes, Miller, Bahktin, and other long-winded and esoteric theorists!

Amy

UW is an AMAZING institution with great academic programs. I highly recommend it for someone who is looking for a "big college" experience.

Katy

If you want a big school with lots of school spirit, really nice relaxed students, a great city, a beaaauuutiful campus, and a challenging but interesting set of classes, UW is perfect for you. I seriously recommend a visit in the spring when the cherry blossoms are out!

Andy

Washington is a worthy place to enjoy.

Gene

Hmm...Almost all the UW freshmen are admitted as "pre-major"...Many people come with their wishes of going into the department they like... However, you should really think carefully that "is it ok that you didn't get in your dreaming major??". I have a first-year GPA of almost 3.9, but I still didn't get in the business school~~So, i mean, you may not be able to control all your things here. Basically. Nursing School, Engineering College and Business School are there most competitive school here. Almost all other majors are inside the Art and Science College. Public health and International Studies are also two competitve major. Science departments are open-majors. I think it's necessary to think all of these questions before you make your important decision. If you really like your major and your major is so competitive here, maybe you could consider another university that admitted you directly into the major.

Bryce

When I graduate from UW in a month or so, I will be very glad to leave it behind. The experience has largely been hostile and negative and while I was able to use the opportunity to move from a dead-end job into a solid, open career path, I feel like I have derived much less value from the University than I paid them for. UW is not worth my money or time and I would only encourage extreme liberals who have nothing better to do than protest the fad of the day and hear their own ideas preached as undeniable fact.

Shawn

Need more mainstream diversity issues.

Antoinette

UW pretty much kicks ass. I couldn't have picked a better school to spend my four years at. I love this place and will be proud to tell future employers where I graduated from. Don't feel scared if you don't do well in a class or two. College is hard. It's not high school. But it'll get easier as you become more comfortable with it all. Get out and make friends. Don't wait for them to come to you. Every freshman is starting at the same time and it's new to all of you. Just have fun.

Cameron

You know you're at UW if... Everyone around you is wearing northface and drinking coffee or tea. It's raining but there are very few umbrellas in use. When the sun is shining there are a million people at the local parks, there are ridiculously long lines at every aquatic rental place and there are thousands of people just sitting or playing outside. It is snowing, hailing, raining and freezing cold the very next day after it was hot and sunny. You are trying to eat soup in the dining hall but your spoon has disintegrated in your bowl because the utencils have "Gone Green". "Going Green" is trendy. There are people randomly shouting speeches and voicing their opinions using mega-phones in red square.

Conor

UW Rocks! You will have the time of your life and be changed forever by the experience!

Maria

The often ridiculous grading scale. At many universities an "A" grade is somewhere between a 90-93{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} and up percentage grade. Not here. If you want a 4.0 in a class, you often have to get 100{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} in the class. Ouch.

Rob

This school needs a political mindset check, and people here need to get over their Asperger's and come out of their rooms sometime.

Christina

I love UW. My parents, aunts, and uncles all came here. At first this made me kind of shy away when I was choosing schools, but now I realize that this is the place I belong. It has the great college experience, great academics, Division I sports, and for me a great greek system.
