I would advise parents and students to consider what type of learning environment is best for the student. In what type of environment do they learn best? What kind of distractions will they be able to still academically perform up against? Ask yourself if you learn better in a smaller classroom with 25 students and a prefossor or a lescture hall full of 300 students. Is it important to you to for your professors to know your name and become familiar with who you are on campus? Also, if you know what type of field you are wanting to go into research that field. What type of degree is needed for that field? Are there special certifications needed to work in that field? Research and ask potential colleges of interest if they are familiar with the field of work you are wanting to get into. If there are certification associations affiliated with your field check out the websites for those associations. many times there will be a list of colleges accredited in that field of study for future students. These schools would make an excellent starting point for you to begin your college search. Lastly, visit before making a decision.

Thoroughly research the college, its departments and the surrounding areas. If the area around the college looks shady, then living on or near campus is probably a bad idea. If the college does not offer a diverse range of majors that interest your child, then look for another college. Your child's ideal college should be one with at least 3 majors/minors that interest him/her, plenty of extracurricular activities for your child to get involved in and plenty of financial, psychological and academic help available to the students.

Go to a school that has class sizes that are appropriate for you, smaller schools will generally have smaller class sizes for introductory courses.

To always visit the campus before you make a final decision because that gives you a literal feel for the campus life that the student will be spending all of their time at. Also you will get to meet many people from the school and first impressions are always important. Also to check the background of the school, student experinces there, and get many different opinions to make an accurate judgement. When getting to college I would advise to always try to be involved in something oncampus, it makes your experience alot more enjoyable!! There are alot of distractions in college but to always keep your eye on the prize and remember what you're there for!! College is an amazing experience, but its what you make out of it!!!

Blake

I would suggest to visit the college you are thinking about attending and get a feel of the atmosphere. Then go with your gut and attend that college. Always stay focused on your studies, attend study groups and you will succeed at whatever you choose to do.

Amy

In order to find the right college, the student needs to see where they fill as though they will fit in the best. Yes, parents you want your say so, but in reality the students is the one attending so they need to feel the most comfortable in the new environment. When you find the right college make the most it. Getting involved through intramarl sports, or joining clubs around campus will make the experience all the more better. Meeting new people and engaging in fun activities in and outside of campus will allow the student to make the most his or her experience in college.

Go to an orientation first!

Nadia

In order to find to the right college yourself, you should make sure that you have the money to afford the tuition if you don't have any financial aid coming in. Also make sure that the type of school you are attending is one that you would fill comfortable in, whether it's a large campus where you are just a number, a small college where the professors know you by name, or a college that has the ability to be a large campus and a small campus at the same time. I believe that the right college for a person depends on their preference and whether you are willing to make the most out of going to college. Making the most out of your college experience depends on your what think your college experience should be and also make great friends that will support you and help you with the different things that go on on the campus.

Consider ALL aspects of the school- location, weather, professors, cost, students, etc - and make sure the you can withstand four plus year at the school. If you have any doubts, consider other options.

To the students: know your self before going in. Or know most things about your self. Know if your the social butterfly or the shy book worm. Me as an example I am both. At school I love to be loud and outgoing in class but when it comes to studying I love to be locked up in a quiet room by myself. Always know when to say "no" to partying. The party is always going to be around somewhere everynight. Don't ever think the world will end because you didn't destroy some brain cells that night instead of focusing on your studies or something more important. To the parents: know that your child is going to be an idiot every once in awhile and that times and the law have changed very harassly. So have bail money on hand and don't hate your child for doing the things you did but now we can't be let off for. As long as they are doing good in their studies, have minimal screw ups, seem patienent in the work that they're doing, and aren't breaking your bank, love them and they will love you.

Gary

The key to finding the right college is to visit the campus and see which one fits your own personality.

Eugenia

Do not wait until high school to financially prepare for any higher education institution. Sometimes, being athletic and having a B average in high school is not enough. In the state of Georgia, the HOPE Scholarship is given to college students who maintain a B average or higher. The scholarship only covers for tuition and some books. Payment for room and board, travel, mealplans and etc. are still needed. Therefore, you must research as many scholarships as possible and do not neglect the possibility of loans, despite the temptation.

The best advice that could be given is to not rush any decision. Take your time and research thouroughly each college and carreer path in order to get the whole picture before your plunge into college life. Visitations are one of the best factors when deciding on a college because when you visit a school, you get a better feel for the school than just reading about it or looking at the pictures. When you get to college the best thing you can do is to talk; talk to other students, professors, and professionals. Talking will get you far. It will make college life easier and help with making friends and better grades. The last peice of advice that I can give is to not study too much. Work and study to do well in school, but there is still three more years of college and if you want to make it through all of them it is best not to burn out early.

Lauren

Get a tour from a current student at each college you visit. They can give you the insight you won't get from a book. look at several different kinds of schools and consider all of your options. Once your there get envolved!!! Join an organization, club, or rush!!! Go out to support the sports teams and enjoy yourself. Don't forget about your studies. Have good time but don't let your grades slip because that is you first priority.
