You hear the word "hipster" a lot at Vassar. I'd say it's one of the most prevalent stereotypes on campus, though to be honest, it's not unfounded: lots of ridiculous bag lady-esque outfits, crazy hair, skinny jeans, vague music no one's ever heard of--things like that. You also encounter a lot of stereotypes surrounding the liberal idealism of most Vassar students. I'd say Vassar also falls victim to the usual stereotypes plaguing lots of liberal arts colleges: earthy crunchy hippie kids who want to change the world one protest at a time. Stuff like that.

Many people think of Vassar as being the sort of college where much of the student body is made up of rich, super-liberal, prepy kids with fashionably-PC opinions and little actual real-world experience.

Besides the whole "Oh, you go to Vassar? What made you choose a women's college?" confusion, the most frequent stereotype is that Vassar has an extremely artsy student body with a proportionately large LGBT population.

Vassar students are supposedly all hipsters, trendy, cokeheads or potheads.

There are a bunch of stereotypes about Vassar and Vassar students and, to be honest, some of them are really conflicting. Here are a few: Vassar is a haven for all middle to upper class white kids who strive constantly to escape their Suburban wonder bread background and the stigma of their wealth. Vassar is full of tree-hugging, granola crunching hippies who would all tear off their clothes and live with the animals if possible. Vassar is plagued by superficial intellectuals who spend their time intellectually masturbating all over everyone else.

Most would describe Vassar as a small liberal arts school with a spectacular campus. Some stereotypes I have heard iabout the students include academically inclined, free thinking, and very liberal. I have also heard that we are all tree hugging hippies who don't shave, are stuck up, and smoke weed all day - oh, and that everyone is gay.

People tend to think that Vassar students are all bleeding heart hippy liberals who do a lot of drugs and are really into politics and whatnot.

Everyone is gay. There are no boys. There are lots of hippies. Everyone smokes hookah and pot.

Vassar students are stereotyped as rich, white, scarf-wearing, latte-drinking hipster snobs. Vassar has a reputation for being extremely liberal, especially with its drug-use policies. It also comes off as intentionally segregated from the Poughkeepsie community, the work of older rich white snobs.

The first thing you'll probably hear when you talk about Vassar is "Isn't that a women's college?" or something along those lines. I've also been "informed" that everybody here is either queer-identified, Jewish, or both. I've been taken for a drug addict before, too. Women here are frequently assumed to be raging feminists, and everyone is assumed to be on the left side of the political spectrum.

I remember during my first week here, a friend who's from Pougkeepsie said that townies think of us as naked, gay hippies. I also think there's a hipster stereotype, that Vassar kids are skinny, ironically dressed music snobs. But the overarching one, and one that I like, is that we're a bunch of slightly odd, creative people.

Stereotypical Vassar students are rich, white, from the Northeast, liberal, very smart, and incredibly pretentious. They like showing off how much they know, and they look down upon people who are uneducated or unintelligent. They're snobby about books and music, listening only to obscure bands and preferring books that no one has ever heard of.

When my mom told people I was going to Vassar they first asked her if I was gay and when she told them I wasn't the next thing said was that I'd probably be having a lot of sex. A lot of people also seem to think that Vassar students are extremely alternative, hippie, activist, weed smoking types.

That we are all tree-hugging, pot-smoking vegans and non-comformists. Or that most kids who were outcasts in high school come here to the Vass. Also, that the kids here are very much hipsters and into vintage clothing and alternative/non-mainstream things. Above all, that Vassar is quite elite and liberal in its politics and way of thinking and is a very open campus.
