Reese

They are very left wing, they do a lot of drugs, they all come from a fairly privileged background

Jerry

Stereotypes stereotypes sterotypes are everywhere and I choose not to subscribe to them and the pretentious conventions of the uninformed... Choose your own view, look with your own eyes, speak you words your thoughts your thoughts and was it Emerson that said Speak what you think today in hard words and tomorrow speak what tomorrow thinks in hard words again though it contradict everything you said today or something like that... The point is the point is the point is....Discover for yourself, formulate your own opinions, listen and regard but take it upon yourself to investigate the unknown and the harbingers outside of your own comfort zone and explore this multitude of people and places and voices and poisons and joyful exclamations and the unbelievable spectrum of thought of thought that Vassar this place this once-was-arboretum sprawling destitute splendor of Vassar... see for yourself.

Chris

Everyone's either gay or female. Lots of drama students. Everyone's a tree-hugging vegan and a member a PETA.

Aaron

A lot of people see Vassar students as pretentious, bitchy, and/or stuck-up rich white kids.

Ellen

You hear the word "hipster" a lot at Vassar. I'd say it's one of the most prevalent stereotypes on campus, though to be honest, it's not unfounded: lots of ridiculous bag lady-esque outfits, crazy hair, skinny jeans, vague music no one's ever heard of--things like that. You also encounter a lot of stereotypes surrounding the liberal idealism of most Vassar students. I'd say Vassar also falls victim to the usual stereotypes plaguing lots of liberal arts colleges: earthy crunchy hippie kids who want to change the world one protest at a time. Stuff like that.

Ian

Many people think of Vassar as being the sort of college where much of the student body is made up of rich, super-liberal, prepy kids with fashionably-PC opinions and little actual real-world experience.

Jordan

We're crazy liberal. Accepting. Anti-Christian/Conservative. Hippies.

Blake

Supposedly, the school is entirely populated by pretentious hippies and hipsters, and mostly rich white ones at that.

Tate

Vassar students are usually said to be really preppy or complete hippies. Also, Vassar has a really high homosexual population (but that isn't really a stereotype...that's totally true). We have been called cold, godless people by the people of Poughkeepsie. Also, people naturally assume that everyone at Vassar is super wealthy.

Jess

That we're a bunch of barefoot girl-power-loving hipsters who work hard and party harder.

Julia

I think the main stereotypes at Vassar are that our school is either all female or has a large gay population.

Rudy

Most Common Ignorant Question: Isn't everyone at Vassar gay?

Elizabeth

Besides the whole "Oh, you go to Vassar? What made you choose a women's college?" confusion, the most frequent stereotype is that Vassar has an extremely artsy student body with a proportionately large LGBT population.

Alex

Torry

There are a bunch of stereotypes about Vassar and Vassar students and, to be honest, some of them are really conflicting. Here are a few: Vassar is a haven for all middle to upper class white kids who strive constantly to escape their Suburban wonder bread background and the stigma of their wealth. Vassar is full of tree-hugging, granola crunching hippies who would all tear off their clothes and live with the animals if possible. Vassar is plagued by superficial intellectuals who spend their time intellectually masturbating all over everyone else.

Nate

Hipsters. A level of intellectual arrogance. Wealthy. Weird at other schools, but normal at Vassar.

Ashley

Most would describe Vassar as a small liberal arts school with a spectacular campus. Some stereotypes I have heard iabout the students include academically inclined, free thinking, and very liberal. I have also heard that we are all tree hugging hippies who don't shave, are stuck up, and smoke weed all day - oh, and that everyone is gay.

Megan

Beverly

People tend to think that Vassar students are all bleeding heart hippy liberals who do a lot of drugs and are really into politics and whatnot.

Susie

1. There are few good-looking/straight guys. 2. Everyone is weird, offbeat, and hippie. 3. It's cold and rainy.

Gabriela

Everyone is gay. There are no boys. There are lots of hippies. Everyone smokes hookah and pot.

Andy

Vassar students are stereotyped as rich, white, scarf-wearing, latte-drinking hipster snobs. Vassar has a reputation for being extremely liberal, especially with its drug-use policies. It also comes off as intentionally segregated from the Poughkeepsie community, the work of older rich white snobs.

Thomas

The first thing you'll probably hear when you talk about Vassar is "Isn't that a women's college?" or something along those lines. I've also been "informed" that everybody here is either queer-identified, Jewish, or both. I've been taken for a drug addict before, too. Women here are frequently assumed to be raging feminists, and everyone is assumed to be on the left side of the political spectrum.

Nina

we're all extremely liberal, we're all rich, we're all extremely intelligent in every way

Alexandra

Rich, artsy, eccentric, accepting (not as much with political views).

Rosemary

Emily

60/40 ratio of women to men, that half of the 40{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of men are gay. Students are potheads and big partyers. The student population is typically politically liberal, most of my friends are either Jewish or atheist in terms of religion, and people tend to be more artsy than science-oriented.

Joseph

the people are very liberal and independent

Casey

It's a very liberal place, it's very beautiful, the people are friendly and very open, it's a very artistic and intellectual environment.

Laura

All the men are gay. It's an all-women's college. We're all crunchy tree-hugging hippies or film-major hipsters.

Andrew

Vassar is full of rich white kids from private boarding schools who smoke a lot of pot. These kids tend to be either hipsters of hippies

Parker

They are hippies.

Alex

hippies, liberal, politically active, wierdos

Sasha

I remember during my first week here, a friend who's from Pougkeepsie said that townies think of us as naked, gay hippies. I also think there's a hipster stereotype, that Vassar kids are skinny, ironically dressed music snobs. But the overarching one, and one that I like, is that we're a bunch of slightly odd, creative people.

Ainsley

Stereotypical Vassar students are rich, white, from the Northeast, liberal, very smart, and incredibly pretentious. They like showing off how much they know, and they look down upon people who are uneducated or unintelligent. They're snobby about books and music, listening only to obscure bands and preferring books that no one has ever heard of.

pat

hipster, pretentious, trust fund, white, liberal, stoners, philosophical, trying to hard to be real

Blake

The biggest stereotype about Vassar kids is that everyone smokes pot, everyone is a dirty hippie, and everyone is gay.

sarah

Artsy, wierd, hippies, nerds, liberal

Tom

When my mom told people I was going to Vassar they first asked her if I was gay and when she told them I wasn't the next thing said was that I'd probably be having a lot of sex. A lot of people also seem to think that Vassar students are extremely alternative, hippie, activist, weed smoking types.

Deborah

That we are all tree-hugging, pot-smoking vegans and non-comformists. Or that most kids who were outcasts in high school come here to the Vass. Also, that the kids here are very much hipsters and into vintage clothing and alternative/non-mainstream things. Above all, that Vassar is quite elite and liberal in its politics and way of thinking and is a very open campus.

Nate

That we are all white, pretentious, uber liberal people.

Chris

We're kinda weird We're pretty nice We're secretly incredibly rich cigarette smoking snobs
