Virginia Commonwealth University Top Questions

Is the stereotype of students at your school accurate?

Tate

No. Yes we have a lot of art students..I mean we have some of the top programs in the country. But we also have other top programs in other majors and that is often overlooked. Every school is a party school in its own right so I do not consider us to be a party school. Crime is going to be everywhere but I think VCU police as well as Richmond police help detour crime from our campus and help keep our campus safe. You always see VCU pd on their bikes around campus. Just anyone cannot get into VCU. We are not as hard as the top schools but you do have to have a strong GPA or SAT score to get in.

Hunter

These stereotypes are very far from the truth. Sure some parts of town aren't the best place to be after dark but for the most part it is pretty safe. The student population is very diverse; you will find a group that you fit into.

Robert

I would say that there is a big emphasis on those two majors, but they recently stepped up as far as business goes. Richmond is wild if you make it that way. If you don't put yourself in compromising situations, then you'll be fine. I never had any trouble unless I put myself in it. Its actually pretty safe.

Liz

No. We are in fact the opposite of ghetto. All of our parents are well-off, for the most part, which is why we can afford to go to (or get approved for loans) to go here. Most of the students here are into the scene and being ghetto is actually quite frowned upon.

Mel

No.

Allie

There are many art students, considering our art school is nationally recognized, however VCU has a very diverse student body.

Jesse

What college doesn't have slackers? VCU is so incredibly diverse. All colleges have a handful of idiots, but we've got every other type of student as well. There are tons of artsy people or musicians, and then for every one of them there is a science geek to match it.

Erin

No, they are not true. not every student that attends this university is an art student. We all have different majors and just because VCU has a prestigious art program doesn't mean that we all came here for it. And VCU's campus is just as safe as other campuses. Richmond may have bad parts of town but VCU does everything it can to make sure we are safe when we are on campus. I feel very safe here.

Shannon

Yes, richmond does have crime, but it is normally outside of Richmond. VCU has its own police force within the campus lines. People just need to be aware of their surroundings and thats normally everywhere you go. There are lots of services that are offered to students. For example we have a shuttle that is available for students at all hours of the night to drive students home. Richmond is also being "rebuilt" meaning they are modernizing the city trying to revive it. The campus itself, is safe to me...I have never been in a situation where I was in immediate danger here at VCU.

KJ

The only reason it is not as well known as some schools is that we do not have a football team, but it is not as looked over as some people think. Its very specialized programs and basket ball team are rising in popularity. It is also not only for "art freaks" but it does have a very extensive and competitive art program but the "art kids" blend in with everyone else. Also, Yes VCU is in the city but when you are on campus everything is really safe. There are plenty of VCU police, emergency phones, and well lit streets everywhere. Security is also really tight in the dorms too, it's really nothing to worry about.

Yes and No. This stereotype does not apply to everyone, of course, but there are some people that just need an extra push to get rid of this stereotype.

Harper

I find that if you aren't in the honors program or a rigours, renowned program at VCU, there is very little competition far as academcially. The campus itself is safe and there are plenty of students walking around even until one in the morning, however, outside of campus would be somewhere you would want to go with a friend and pepper spray. We are working to make our campus safer, with talks of videos on campus and adding more escort service buses. There is a 'campus connector' that takes VCU students for free to various destintations. It arrives every fiften minutes and is very useful. VCU has an outstanding arts and theater program, that set it aside from any other Virginia university, so of course we have artistic students, many peiced and tatooed but it adds to the diversity. There are a good amount of Indian, Arab and Asian foreign students at VCU but you can learn a lot from them. They have very touching stories to how they have overcame a lot to be here to study and are very grateful.

Tristan

Richmond is a city. Crime rates are higher in cities, but it's not as unsafe as people may think. I have never felt unsafe during my three years here at VCU. You have to be smart. Don't walk by yourself at 3am and you won't feel unsafe. Use the buddy system. In an urban environment such as VCU there are risks that other colleges and universities don't have but don't be stupid and you won't find yourself in situations where you feel unsafe or uncomfortable.

Yes, the acceptance rate is around 60{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} and the student body is very diverse etc.
