What are the most popular student activities/groups?

Lauren

Social life at wake basically revolves around Greek Life and atheletics. If you aren't in a frat or sorority, you are really missing out of social connections and true friendships. Football players and Basketball players are by far the most recognized at Wake. As far as dorm life, I love it. Everyone on my hall is great, but i think i may have gotten lucky. I have never had a problem getting a shower, having privacy, or falling asleep. I personally leave my door open all the time when I am in the dorm because I love for people to stop by and chat, but mostly I am in lounges talking with other people and doing my work, because I do have a lot of it!

Gretchen

Students in dorms typically leave their dorms open. I leave on a 10 person hall and people are always yelling to each other and having conversations. It is very open where we are all living together. Dating...hmm...haha, there is not much casual dating. It is either friends or boyfriend/girlfriend. There is not too much "Do you want to grab dinner on Friday?" If there is, then there are huge expectations for the future attached. One of the greatest parts about WFU is you can always find someone to do anything with. If you want to watch a movie, you will find someone to do that with, if you want to go to an art gallery, you will find someone to do that with, if you want to get waster, you can find someone to do that with, if you want to go to the library to knock some work out, you can find someone to do that with.

Screamin Demons ~ I'm the treasurer of Theta Alpha Kappa - the religious honor society - its really laid back and relaxed. ~ No. ~ Athletic events are popular, the rest not as much. ~ The PIT gets old really fast, glad I don't have to go anymore. ~ Freshman Hall and Delta Zeta (Sorority). ~ No one dates really, those that do have really intense relationships. I am happy to say I met my fiance at Wake. ~ Rolling the quad. Lovefest. Hit the Bricks and other fundraisers. ~ Average 3 nights a week probably and then you have people at both exremes. ~ Veyr important. ~ Stayed in with my roomates and friends and drank wine and watched movies. ~ Rent a movie. ~ Starbucks, volunteer, Whole Foods, Borders/Barnes and Noble, go out to dinner, etc.

Jack

Baseball, football and volleyball are the most popular sports. If I'm awake at 2 a.m. on a Tuesday I'm watching a movie with my girlfriend.

Cameron

The most popular groups on campus are fraternities and sororities. Greek life pretty much controls the party life and social scene on campus. People do choose to stay independent, but guys especially get a lot of grief for their choice. Last weekend, my sorority had date functions on Thursday and Friday night and on Saturday night I went to a fraternity party. That's a pretty typical night on Wake's campus--off campus fraternity parties. But there's always something to do on campus that doesn't involve drinking, like club and inter-mural sports teams, worship groups, and school-sponsored activities like Wake Frost, Wake n' Shake, Springfest, and Shag on the Mag. Sororities and fraternities also have philanthropic activities, like Tridelta's "Triple Play" and Delta Zeta's "Turtle Tug" that students get involved in. People go to athletic events, but guest speakers and theater events always get a poor showing, except by students who have to go for class. The dating scene at Wake is as close to non-existent as possible. Everyone always says, "Wake students don't date."

Ava

most popular: greek life, habitat, campus kitchens, club sports ie ultimate frisbee and crew. i'm involved with amnesty international, and they do a lot to raise awareness about human rights, environmental, and political issues in the world. students in freshman dorms tend to leave their doors open because they're more open and sociable in their halls than are upperclassmen. football and basketball are the biggest sports. we have great guest speakers that come to campus. our performing arts leaves a bit to be desired. the dating scene is largely greek; it's easy to date on campus because there's always something to do.. schoolwork can keep you really busy though. i met my closest friends on my freshman hallway, through church, or through phi mu. if i'm awake at 2am on a tuesday, i'm studying or finishing up a paper. we have love feast, the lighting of the quad, shag on the mag, wake n shake, springfest, and lots of other traditions. people party on wednesdays and on weekends. frats/sororities can be a fun thing to be a part of, but it's not necessary to be in one. a lot of people join some of the more popular frats/sororities because they are social climbers and will put up with a lot of superficial stuff. last weekend i spent a lot of time with my sorority and got initiated. i also spent time with my boyfriend. on a saturday night you can go to a movie, an art gallery, just hang out with friends, go out to dinner, go to greensboro to go to a club, etc. off campus, i go shopping or go on retreats with church or with friends. you can also go camping/hiking/etc.

Rebecca

Greek life, especially sororities, are a very large part of social life on campus. Also religious groups can be a big part of social groups. Most freshmen join Screamin' Demons, a group that supports Wake sports. Lots of people go to football games and basketball games and it's a great way to get involved and feel the Wake spirit. There is a major lack of a dating scene, although I don't know if its worse than most college campuses. There's definitely more a hookup culture, and then when people start dating it get really serious really quickly. If you're a partier, you can definitely party at least 4 nights a week. Wednesday is the big non-weekend night to go out but people also drink on Thursday nights a lot.

Rachel

RUF (the reformed Presbyterian group) is huge. I am involved with WAKEradio, which I love. It is a small goup of students who sort of go against the flow of the school. I am also part of a new group called Students Pro Humanitate, which strives to promote policies of peace and looks out for Human Rights. We have also protested many of the proposed changes such as the forced eviction of facutly and staff from their apartments with little notice. I met most of my closest friends through either WAKEradio or being an English major or both. If you're awake at 2:00am on a Tuesday, you are studying. Greek life is huge, but I am not involved. Off campus, I work at a coffee shop down town. There are a number of good restaurants in Winston to go to, and we have a new movie theatre with discounted tickets for students. Mostly, when my friends and I go out, we go either to Greensboro to see an independent film that is not playing in Winston, or we go to Chapel Hill to see a concert. I went to Chapel Hill last weekend to see a show in fact. We get a lot of good music out there, but it is unfortunately about 90 minutes away by car.

Laura

Greek life is really big at Wake, and people hang out with their greek organization a TON! I'm in a sorority, Kappa Kappa Gamma. It depends, some people leave their doors open and others don't. Athletic events are kind of popular. It depends on if a team is doing particularly well or not. People at Wake do not date very much. People usually go out 3-4 nights a week.

Alexandra

The Greek scene is HUGE at Wake. If you are able to find a group outside of a sorority/fraternity, good for you, but good luck. The dating scene at Wake is just that, a dating scene. Not many people have random hookups, and if they do, they turn into regular hookups which leads to them dating.

Jack

Popular groups: football, basketball, women's lacrosse, men's soccer, rugby A group: fraternity intramural sports Leave dorm doors open: yes Athletic events: football is popular, basketball is freshman year or when good Guest speakers / theatre: depends Dating: up to you, many have girlfriends Closest friends: fraternity and freshman dorm 2am on a Tuesday: likely studying, maybe drinking Traditions: rolling the quad, Springfest How often partying: 2-4 nights a week Greek life: very important Last weekend: fraternity party, house party Saturday night without drinking: bowling, movie, studying Off-campus: everything except class

Kelly

Greek life is very popular. But religious groups are also popular as well as different charity events and creative/artistic groups like a Capella groups. Athletic events are very popular.

Becca

Sororities and fraternities are really popular, athletes mostly hang out with other athletes. Club sports teams hang out together, religious groups, etc. I am a Kappa, but most of my best friends are in other sororities, and this is fine. A lot of people are mostly friends with people in their own group, but it happens more with fraternities than sororities - its more acceptable for girls to be friends with girls not in their group. My closest friends many I've known since freshman year, others are friends of friends that I've become close to over the years. The dating scene is somewhat nonexistent. Either you randomly hook up with people or you are in a very long-term relationship. Most relationships start with drunken hook ups, which then become more consistent, which then become a relationship. As a senior, sometimes we go to bars on Tuesdays and other weeknights, Wednesday is the main night for all classes to go out to frats, bars, etc, other people on weekdays will be in the library or doing homework. Last weekend I went to fraternity parties on Friday and Saturday. Saturday nights without drinking - maybe a movie, could go to an art gallery, stay in and cook dinner, go downtown, etc.

Dawson

The most popular groups on campus is definitely greek life. I am in a sorority. Ya, people are not afraid to leave their doors unlocked, no one steals here. Athletic events are pretty popular, especially football for the tailgating. I met my closest friends in my freshman year dorm and through my sorority. If I am awake on Tuesday at 2 am I am either at a party or studying. A tradition that happens is toilet papering the quad after games. People party probably about 3 times a week. Greek life is important to a lot of people. Last weekend I went out and did homework. I do the Big Brothers Big Sisters program off campus.

julie

-greek life is very active, a great deal of students are involved, it tends to dominate social life -most students leave their doors open -the theater is very active, constantly producing shows -off campus students head to the movie theater, and grab food; downtown is pretty lacking

Charlotte

Activities are numerous and the social scene is always buisy.

Mary

Sororities are great

Lisa

I'm in a sorority. Greek life is pretty popular, especially for girls. It isn't too intense an experience which makes it easier for a wider span of girls to join sororities whereas they might not at other schools. The Greek system is also pretty self-involved- there isn't too much interaction between Greeks and non-Greeks, especially in respect to social life. Athletic events are pretty popular, especially in the fall. The sororities and fraternities dress up and tailgate, and a majority of the student body attends the game. My original closest friends were on my freshman hall, and some of my other ones I met in my pledge class. I am almost always awake at 2 a.m. on a Tuesday- I'm either working or out in the lounge with the girls on my hall, or both.

Emily

Intramural and Greek life are huge. I'm involved in Greek life and there's no reason not to do it, you can be as much or little involved as you want. Freshman leave their doors open for the most part, many upperclassmen do if they know the people in their suite. Football games are our most attended. My friends I met on my hall freshman year and through my sorority. People party heavily Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

Elizabeth

Sororities and Fraternities are definately very present on campus. I can't imagine life without being involved in Greek life, but several students aren't. Athletics are very popular. The football team improved during the 2006 season with a trip to the Orange Bowl. Wake and the ACC is known for Basketball...basketball games are fun. Men's soccer won the NCAA tournament in 2007, which was amazing. So, I would say we have amazing athletics for the small size of our school, and the students really get into sporting events. 2am on a Tuesday...either studying or coming home from Fox and Hound, a popular sports bar. Partying within the Greek scene is pretty popular. As an upper classmen, I would say, Wednesday-Saturday is pretty typical. Saturday night that doesn't involve drinking?? I don't think I have ever done that.

Sasha

Greek organizations are the most popular on campus. i am involved in Kappa Delta. Students tend to leave their doors open. Athletic events are popular. Guest speakers and theater events are mildly so. There is no dating scene. My closest friends were either on my freshman dorm hall or in my sorority. If i am awake at 2am on Tuesday i am probably studying. I go to movies on saturday nights

Kat

sororities and fraternities are very popular groups on campus because they provide such a range of things to do from service to social activities. We really support our athletic teams- especially basketball and football- those are some of my fondest memories on campus. If i'm awake at 2am on Tuesday I'm either hanging out with friends in a social setting or doing schoolwork. Different groups of people party at different times, there is a party every night if you are looking for one.

Hannah

Most popular groups on campus are the sororities and fraternities. I am a Kappa Delta -- a sorority with good involvement, high GPA, and good social standing. Students generally leave their doors open. Athletic events are very popular --especially football and men's basketball. Guest speakers are not very popular. Theater is somewhat popular. The dating scene is pretty non-existent. The couples that are together get together early on or come into Wake already dating. Most individuals just "hook up." I met my closest friends in my sorority. Awake on a Tuesday -- studying or watching TV trying to go to sleep. Traditions -- rolling the quad after games and fraternity events. People party during the weekend, also often on Wednesday and Thursday nights. Fraternities/sororities are very important. Last weekend I went to a fraternity party on Friday, a fraternity date function on Saturday, and studied on Sunday. A Saturday night that does not involve drinking usually involves a movie, homework, and church. Off campus has a lot of restaurants, movie theaters, bars, and other events.

Vanessa

'School' related activities are pretty under the radar...Football games are fun because they are a huge tailgate, besides that I don't know who attends all of the student government activities. Fraternity parties and athletic parties dominate the weekends - except Sunday when you can find EVERYONE in the library.

Jenny

Traditions and events that happen every year: Wake Frost, Shag on the Mag, a Carnical, concerts... Basketball games and football games are very popular.

megan

greek life, sports teams. im involved in a sorority. it's been a wonderful opportunity, but i like that it does not require all of my time. students do leave their doors open in dorms. athletic events are popular. some guest speakers are popular. people are either single or in a relationship, they dont usually go on dates. i met my closest friends through my sorority. 2am on a tuesday i would be studying. traditions: wakenshake, shag on the mag, spring fest, activities fair, homecoming events, etc. people party 2-3 days a week usually. last weekend i went out one night and the other night i wrote a paper. people often go to dinner, movies, a friend's house/apartment, art galleries (if they dont want to drink). going to a party and not drinking is completely socially acceptable.

Hannah

Greek life is huge here. I am in Kappa Kappa Gamma and love it! Athletic events are very popular. I met my closet friends in my freshman dorms, in class, and in my sorority. Sororities and fraternities are very important here.`

Jamie

greek; yes, leave doors open; popular athletics; closest friends from where I lived and sorority; always studying; springfest is a spring event every year; greek system is huge; movies, eat out, shopping

Amanda

The most popular groups/organizations/teams on campus are sororities and fraternities, volunteer organizations and the football and basketball teams. One group I'm involved with, HOPE (Helping to Overcome Physical Expectations), is comprised of about 100 students to spend 2 hours a week volunteering at a local elementary school with students with special needs. Most people do leave their doors open in their dorms because everyone wants to be social! Athletic events, especially football, are very popular. If you're really into a sport, you'll have no trouble finding someone else to go to the game with. Guest speakers are only popular to the students interested in what they have to say-sometimes hearing guest speakers can seem like a chore. Theater is not very popular at Wake, although the theater department is successful at what they do. PEOPLE AT WAKE DON'T DATE! You're either single, "hooking up" with someone and are not dating, or are in a serious boyfriend/girlfriend relationship (including engagements). I met my closest friends on my freshman hall in through my sorority and Greek like as a whole. If I'm awake at 2 AM on a Tuesday, I'm studying for a test that I have the next day. Some of my friends, on the other hand, are probably at the bars! Each year, Homecoming, the Lighting of the Quad, Tie a Yellow Ribbon Week, the reading of names of those who died in the Holocaust, Springfest, Wake 'n' Shake and various other fun events occur each year. I'd say that most people party 2-3 nights per week. Fraternities and sororities are extremely important- most parties are fraternity parties (even at local bars) and almost 50{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of Wake women are Greek. Last weekend I attended my sorority initiation events, had a reunion with friends I was abroad with in the summer, volunteered at WFUBMC, slept a lot and studied. If I didn't want to drink on a Saturday night, I could go to the movies with friends, hang out at my apartment, get some sleep, volunteer an extra shift at the hospital (if I were really ambitious!), or go to a party and NOT DRINK. I live off campus, so my life outside of classes and meetings occurs off campus. I eat off campus, can go shopping, run errands and get coffee!

Mary

football team is getting more attention, our basketball team used to be amazing and the most renowned on campus. Frat and sorority life are also huge and a big part of campus life. Most students leave their doors open, although that may be starting to change after some theft incidents. Rolling the quad is a huge tradition after a big win (football and basketball primarily). Most people party 3 times a week, maybe more maybe less. You can go to the movies, if you dont want to go out on a Saturday night, although the options on campus are fairly limited, as are they off campus since there isnt much of a college town.

One of the best things about going to school at Wake is that there’s almost always something fun to do. Sure, Winston-Salem doesn’t have much of a nightlife, but within the Wake bubble there’s always something planned for students. Some events many students look forward to include Shag on the Mag, a completely prepped-out night of South Carolina-style shag dancing on the quad, Project Pumpkin, a volunteer day where local kids trick-or-treat on campus, and Wake ‘n Shake, a newer fundraising 12-hour dance marathon for cancer research. Greek life aside, there are many clubs on campus that many students manage to get excited about. The Lilting Banshee’s, a comedy group on campus, perform for students every semester and are promoted during that time by ubiquitous yellow signs with hilarious sayings. In fact, one of the first things a new freshman might encounter could be a neon sign cautioning that “the Freshman 15 shouldn’t come out in 9 months with a name”. In addition, the extremely talented and numerous a capella groups always draw big crowds to their shows. We even have a secret society, called the Twenty-Threes, but the details about it are shrouded in secrecy. But for me, and many others on campus, Greek life dominates the social scene. If you want a party and can’t go to bars yet, you’ll have to find a fraternity house, hall, or lounge to go to. The party situation at Wake is complicated because, unlike many schools, we don’t have official frat houses. We do have halls and lounges in dorms, where sometimes the fraternities hold parties that almost always get busted. It’s easy though to get rides to off-campus parties, especially if you’re a freshman. For big parties, fraternity pledges will run shuttles and pick you up right at your door. The biggest party nights, besides the weekend, are Wednesday and Thursday. On Wednesdays many fraternities rent out bars, where you shouldn’t have much trouble getting a drink, or house parties. Thursdays, however, are for the 21-and-up crowd at bars and sporting events with drink specials. On Saturdays, there’s almost always an opportunity to drink at a party during the day, which sounds like a recipe for disaster because it is. That being said, I’ve also had some of my craziest and most fun times at Wake during these day parties. Off-campus, a lot of students get involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters and mentor once a week with their little. I’ve gotten so much out of my time with my little, Cymone, who just started high school. I’ve enjoyed doing things with her that I often wished that I had an excuse to do, like put-put golfing, painting pottery, or just getting my nails done.

Matt

I participate in Student Government and there are a lot of dedicated and hard working kids here. There are plenty of things to do on the weekend for the drinkers and non-drinkers, and the Student Union really works hard to give everyone something to do.

Mary

Greek and Sports teams really define the groups. 2am on Tuesday, you are either studying or out at $1 beer night.

Tom

Popular organizations are the greek organizations; I know one student who does not lock her door; the athletic events are very, very popular, speakers not so much, theatre moderately popular; the dating scene is very much composed of hookups and one-night stands; there are people in long-term relationships, but lots of them are with students at other schools; the GLBT dating scene is absolutely horrible since no one here is out; I met my closest friends through the Gay-Straight organization and through a diversity residence organization; 2am on Tuesday I would be working on homework; People party at least once a week, usually on Fridays; Last weekend I watched movies, slept in, went to a get-together at a friend's house, and did work

Susan

Fraternities and sororities are the most popular organizations on campus. I was in Kappa. Students in the dorm do leave their doors open. If I'm awake at 2am on a Tuesday, I'm drunk. Tradition: When sports teams win events, we throw toilet paper all over the trees. Off campus we go to bars, restaurants or movies.
