best thing about wake: the students, the friendships worst things: amount of work, frustration between faculty staff

Jillian

Wake's size is just right. You'll always see someone who know walking across campus but you'll always see someone new too. Wake hasn't really gotten its name fully recognized in a lot of places in the North, and I know what that's like. But it's name is really growing across the country and employers are definitely impressed by it. A lot of the time Wake is thought of as a business/pre-med only school but the liberal arts flourish on campus and we have some of the greatest professors out there. Wake could definitely use some more social spaces on campus. Winston-Salem isn't as bad as it may seem. Sure its sort of weird that basically everything in the area is funded by tobacco money but there's a great art district of town that is growing and plenty of places to eat in the area. Wake may be its weirdest in tailgates. I know some other schools do it too but seeing guys in ties and girls in dresses at a football game is just weird. I was abroad in the fall and I couldn't wait to get back. Wake really becomes a home. As much it may seem like a bubble sometimes (and it is), it's a really great place that I can't wait to get back to when I'm gone.

Jamie

The school size seems just right now, but the parking is absolutely terrible. Wake is a really great place to go to school and the people are very nice for the most part. greek life is very important for social purposes.

Katie

Wake is an awesome school. It is a good size - I love the fact that is has big sports and is well known but is small enough to be very personal. However, in the Greek scene the school seems very small and everyone knows everyone else's business. People are extremely impressed when they hear I go to wake, it definitely ups their opinion of me. There is not much of a college town which sucks and a couple of the bars are closing down so there will be even less places to go. School pride is decent, you can find avid supporters. Wakes actual campus is gorgeous they spend alot of money on it to keep it that way though. The Greek life is also awesome if you want to be apart of it. There are always parties to go to and easy safe ways to get there. Scheduling for classes can be a pain for the Freshman and Sophmores.

Sarah

Wake is a small school, and that's nice. The academics here are excellent. The campus is pretty. The girls are pretty, too, so ladies, if you come here either make sure you're really hot or prepare to drown your loneliness in your studies because the guys seem to hold all the cards here. The university has lately been making some decisions that seem to indicate an increased desire to make money. The parking prices rose $200 from this year to the coming year, in addition to the usual tuition hike. Also the incoming class size was increased to the extent that we had to kick the professors out of the on-campus housing that 5-10{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of them (mostly the foreign ones) inhabit in order to accommodate the incoming freshmen. The secrecy and haste of that decision created so much controversy that the administration had to back down somewhat, allowing the faculty an extra year (instead of three months) to find somewhere else to stay.

The best thing about Wake for me is the sense of community. No other school I have expirienced has such a tangeable sense of unity. Wherever I go in life I will always feel a connection with other Wake grads. The one thing I would change is the frat scene because I think it promotes clicks and bubbles which suck. The size is perfect. It's a very intimate community where you feel like you know the kids you're going to school with but it still has all the resources of any huge state school. For me, Wake is the perfect mix between the small school I wanted for education and community and the huge school I wanted for everything else. There isn't much of a college town atmosphere. Outside of sporting events you are usually on campus. The judicial system can be kind of strict at times but as long as you tell the truth you should never face any insurmountable legal hurdles within the judicial system. There have been countless priceless moments of rolling the quad with my fellow classmates but one was particularly thrilling. My freshman year our football team beat Florida State 30-0 handing their legendary coach his first home shotout ever and his first loss to Wake in almost twenty years. As students poured out of dorms screaming, on their way to roll the quad, it began to rain. Thus, the quad turned into a mudsliding fest and almost every student returned to their dorms covered with mud from head to toe. A number of my clothes were ruined but I will never in my life forget the absolute thrill of that moment.

Cody

I love Wake. I love the small, community feel that it has to it. I love that it is a gated university and not smack dab in the middle of a city or town. There is a lot more school pride now, I believe, since last year's football acc victory.

Melissa

The best thing about Wake is the campus. It's beautiful and stands out from others. It's a great size, perfect for walking anywhere since it is not too big. The basketball and football stadium off campus is a great idea because it prevents sports day traffic, etc... The brick buildings are beautiful as well as the two quad set up. All of the facilities are nice. The school is definitely getting a little bit bigger. I love Wake for its size, that is obviously why I came here. If I wanted a bigger university, I would have gone somewhere else. With the small school things are more personal and our alumni support is great. Alumni keep coming back for all different events. I am not happy to see Wake reach above 4,000 students. Wake is a great school this small- we compete and surpass all of the larger universities. Being the second smallest institution in Division 1 (slightly above Rice) really shows how amazing we compared to all of the other universities. We are ranked in the top 30 universities, which is great. I don't see why we have to expand our enrollment. If people want a larger school, feel free to go somewhere else. I love the personal attention received at Wake and the strong networks formed that I am afraid will both diminish as the student enrollment continues to increase. I want it to be a privilege to be a Demon Deacon, only given to a select few- the best. The more enrolled, the less special it feels to be a part of Wake Forest. When I tell people I go to Wake they are impressed. I spend most of my time on campus on the field hockey field for sure since I play on the Wake Forest field hockey team. Go DEACS! College Town- does not exist, but I heard where Freddie B's is located will eventually become a street like Franklin Street by UNC. hmmmm....we'll see. Administration- honestly I am shocked by some of our professors. I went to a public school for high school and my teachers there were much better teachers. I have a few great professors, but the majority are not very good. That also might have to do with the low pay teachers receive at Wake. That should definitely be increased because if we want to continue to have high rankings, we need to attract the best teachers to attract the best students. Recent controversy- faculty apartments being knocked down for student housing. Wake wants to increase the student enrollment to 4800 is some many years (5 I think?) Next year we already have 80 more freshmen coming to Wake. Because of this increase they increase parking to $500 and it will probably go up each year because of this prospective increase each year until Wake reaches 4800 students. Well possibly a better situation would be to go back to old ways- only recently sophomores were required to live on campus. Why can't sophomores have the option to move off? That would eliminate over crowding issues with housing on campus and then less people would require to have their car on campus full time. Freshmen already have to park off and sophomores have their cars full time on campus. With sophomores off there will be more parking available since students don't have to park their car on campus- they have their option to car pool, ride their bike to school, walk, etc... School Pride- at games, yes. Orange Bowl was the best example- simply amazing. Unusual- no swim team and a poor swimming facility as well as a really small work out gym. Experience- the Orange Bowl. Also for field hockey- the NCAA final four and hopefully winning another National championship (we will next year....) Frequent Student Complaint- these lap tops are ridiculously not good!!!! Seriously we need a contract with a better and more up-to-date company that will suffice our needs better. These lap tops are so cheap. I know we had a contract with Dell last Fall that fell through because Wake pays next to nothing for these IBM thinkpads and did not want to pay more with Dell. Well if it is part of our tuition anyways, Wake should invest in better quality lap tops. I know other universities, Syracuse for example, is given an option of 3-5 different lap tops and different brands to chose from. It is still part of their tuition and they have to get a lap top, but they do have a choice and may have to pay more depending of their choice. Tuition is already going up 6{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} next year anyways, so I am pretty sure adding on a little extra would be worth getting better lap tops. If not, an option would be best. Most students go out and buy lap tops anyways because these are horrible...so why own two?

Nicole

The best thing about Wake is the community of students, faculty, and staff. I don't know many college campuses where you could walk down the sidewalk and know most of the people you pass, students and teachers alike. The atmosphere at Wake really fosters the building of personal relationships that will carry you through all 4 years. Teachers are easily accessible which is great for learning and really adds value to the education. There is an enormous amount of school pride, from both current and former students. We may be small, but our successes are large and far reaching. Whether it be through national champion athletes, Rhodes Scholars, or award winning researchers, Wake is known throughout the country. One experience I will always remember is winning the ACC Championship and going to the Orange bowl in 2006. The win was a school-wide win. The football team had the support of everyone in the school. Those who could not make the game celebrated the ACC victory on our main quad with cheering and participating in our traditional "rolling of the quad." Students who didn't even know each other came together to celebrate side by side. At the Orange Bowl, we sold over 17,000 tickets; even though our enrollment is just over 4,000. Even though our fans were outnumbered at the Orange Bowl by Louisville fans, we made our presence and our cheers were heard by the players. It was truly a magical experience and is the best example of our athletics combining with the general student population.

Toby

School pride is definitely big in the form of Screamin' Demons for basketball and football games. People are usually mildly impressed when I tell them I go to Wake, but less so than when I used to say that I was looking at Stanford and Duke -- it just doesn't have that same reputation. Winston-Salem is definitely not the best college town, but there are a few good restaurants and Hanes Mall is good.

Meredith

The best thing about Wake is that it feels like home from the first day you set foot on campus. It really is an easy transition stage between high school and the real world. The size is pretty ideal, and while sometimes it feels a bit small, I still see new faces daily. Wake has a great reputation, and whenever I tell people I go here I get great reactions. Some people only know about the school because of its athletics programs which are top-notch, but academically Wake also has a great rep. Wake's administration seems a bit snoody to me- too concerned about image and prestige and the money involved. But they do their best to hide it, and the faculty certainly do not have the same mentality. Many students complain about Winston-Salem and say that there is nothing to do. But if you actually look for stuff going on in the community, you can definitely find it!

Wade

The best thing about Wake is that it is small enough to know at least one person in your class but it's big enough to meet someone new every time you go out. I think the size is just right. The campus is too small to expand on the number of students. When I tell people I go to Wake they are immediately impressed or they have no idea what Wake Forest University is. Some people know that it's a good school but they just know that it's close to UNC and Duke. As for Winston Salem being a "college town"...no, it's not. If you want to see a college town, go to Gainesville. I have never had a problem with Wake's administration but since I am an athlete I don't really have to deal with any of it. I spend most of my time with my team, working out and practicing. When I'm not doing that I'm either in class, studying or sleeping. Wake's school pride is there when the sports teams are successful. If a team isn't having a good season the fan base and pride drops tremendously. Also, the fan base is only decent for the football team and the men's basketball team. There are other teams on campus that are among the best in the nation and their stands are empty. The one experience I'll always remember is watching the field hockey team with the National Championship in 2004 and the experience of playing my sport in front of a packed gym and winning.

Lauren

The best thing about Wake is by far the undercover social and greek scene that the University does a great job in playing down. When I went on a tour here, I had no idea how big a part of Wake Greek Life was, but since joining a sorority, I can happily say that it is the best thing that has happened to me! It is not necessary to be in a frat or sorority, but being in one guarantees four fun years, and I cannot wait for those years to come!!

Gretchen

The best thing about Wake is that students are truly well rounded and involved. No one spends 100{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of their time at the library or 100{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of their time partying. People are involved in student leadership, religious groups, political organizations, service opportunities, and so much more. People are just involved in general. The size is perfect because it is small enough that I am constantly meeting people; however, there are many people who I will never meet and will remain strangers living around me. Despite our size, the opportunities and pride that students have as Demon Deacons is enormous. We have won national championships in multiple sports as a D-1 ACC school. A fun tradition that we have is toilet papering our own quad after any large athletic victory. You will be throwing rolls of toilet paper on a Saturday afternoon next to 500 of your closest friends (and no one will have toilet paper to last the rest of the weekend!) For our most rivaled victories, the quad looks like it is in a white out. It is a beautiful sight.

Stacy

Professors ~ That everyone is pretty much exactly the same ~ Just right ~ They usually mention something about basketball, or more recently football, but generally don't know where it is. Often get it confused with Lake Forest. ~ In the library, Wingate or Tribble ~ 'what college town?' ~ Administration is okay, tough a lot of workers tend to be on the ruder side and the doctors at Student Health are completely incompetent. ~ Moving faculty and administration out of faculty apartments with really short notice and closing Campus Grounds and putting in a Starbucks ~ Yes. ~ Everyone is extremely thin and fit but not necessarily healthy. Does not fit the national average. ~ Meeting my fiance. ~ Greek life runs Wake, they take attendance, parking tickets, conformity, etc.

Jack

School is just the right size. Most people don't know where Wake Forest is located when they hear I go there. The newest controversy is juicycampus.com.

Cameron

The best thing about Wake is the school spirit! Everyone comes out to support the football and basketball teams and we're all really excited to be Demon Deacons. Whenever I tell people where I go to school, they usually comment on our great sports teams and strong academics. I'm proud to be a student here. Winston-Salem isn't really a college town, but I like it that way. I grew up in a college town so it's nice to be in a bigger area! There are lots of great restaurants in W-S and a good mall, too. That sounds ridiculously girly but it's something we all appreciate when we need last minute outfits for a theme party. The biggest current controversy is the expansion of Wake. The administration approved space for 80 extra students next year and they want the university to double in size. The students really like the small, close-knit campus and a lot of us object to making Wake just another medium-sized university. Another controversy is that the administration is apparently taking down all of the Greek letters from the residence halls next year. I hope this is just a rumor because I think it would be false advertising to make it look like Greek life doesn't dominate Wake's social life.

Ava

The best thing about Wake is that it's just the right size, and you don't feel anonymous. It's great that you can meet so many people from so many different backgrounds. I would change the enormous cost of tuition, and where the funds that students pay are spent. I spend time all over campus; a lot of time in my dorm, some at the Phi Mu townhouses, some in the classroom, some in benson, etc... When i say that i go to wake, a lot of people are impressed, depending on whether or not they've heard of it. men tend to respect it a lot more than women i think because of its sports teams. there is no college town, although they are apparently trying to build one. i like wake's administration, but sometimes it feels like they are trying to get all the money out of you that they can, and this gets really stressful for me; this is also the most frequent student complaint, i think. there is a lot of school pride, and i love that about wake-- everyone gets really into school spirit. one experience i'll never forget is rolling the quad and mudsliding after we beat duke in basketball.

Harper

the best thing about Wake Forest is its size, and the opportunities afforded to individual students as a result of the small size and personal attention in the classroom. for example, i've gotten to double major, and study abroad twice (1 summer, 1 semester) in departments that are neither of my majors--i think this was possible because i was always aware of the opportunities available to me to get to know faculty in other departments and explore subjects of interest to me. Wake Forest has allowed me to cultivate a love for learning by providing a liberal arts education curriculum. If I could change one thing about Wake it would be the conservative bias of the student body. Not a college town--WFU is isolated from the Winston-Salem by gates...you have to be very intentional about getting off campus and interacting with people other than college students. Wake's administration changed recently (a couple years ago) and I have been disappointed by the constant treating of this educational institution as a business, with more and more considerations of money than of the university's overall health as an institution. For example, the administration just served a slap in the face to its faculty living in campus faculty apartments, by notifying them only 3 months in advance of the school's plan to convert the faculty apartments into student housing, effectively evicting 60 faculty and staff families from their homes with 3 months notice during the busiest time of the school year. This lack of consideration was driven by a need to increase the school's revenue: increase student body (which no one wants), increase tuition, and find a quick fix for housing to accommodate for the enrollment increases. School pride in ACC sports.

Rebecca

The best thing about Wake is it's size. It's big enough to offer lots of opportunities to students and to not feel constricting, but its small enough to not get lost and really feel like part of a community. Winston-Salem is definitely not your typical college town, but there are good places to go to shop and eat in the area.

Rachel

One thing I'd change: I would take power away from the trustees who pretty much run this school and seem to see it more as a money making organization than an educational institution. The school is a good size, but they keep accepting more Freshman, which means it will inevitably grow. I am embarrassed to tell people I go to Wake, so I usually don't volunteer the information unless someone inquires. I spend most of my time in the student run coffee shop on campus, in the building Tribble (which houses English, philosophy, political science, and education classes), and in the bookstore where I work. Winston-Salem is not so much a college town, but perhaps it could be one if people actually made an effort to leave campus and explore. I do not like the administration. There are actually huge controversies going on right now concerning a long list of announcements that were made about some changes coming up. They are increasing tuition by 6 or 7 thousand dollars, charging a student health fee, charging $500 to park your car on campus, they are kicking out the faculty and staff from their on campus apartments in order to let students live there, and they are planning on spending 25 million dollars transforming Deacon Blvd. into a hang out place for Wake Students. All of these things apall me. There is a lot of school pride, yes. Anything unusual? We have an underground tunnel system that is restricted, but people go down there anyway.

Laura

Class size is a great thing at Wake. In the majority of my classes, my professors can address me by name, and I feel like I have a true teacher student relationship. I am not just another person taking up a seat in a classroom. I would make bigger by about one thousand students. People always say, "That's a great school". I spend most of my time in Benson or in the Library...aside from my dorm room. There aren't many places for students to go around Winston. There should be a row or area of cool boutiques, shops, restaurants, pubs, etc. downtown. The biggest controversy lately was the administrations decision to shuffle the professors out of faculty housing on campus. No one was happy with this decision; Wake did not give enough notice for the faculty. BETTER FOOOOOOOOOD! Aramark has a monopoloy on Wake and it is D-R-E-A-D-F-U-L!!!!

Alexandra

I absolutely love Wake. It is the perfect match for me; the size, the academic level of difficulty, sports, etc. For the most part, people react in a positive way when I tell them I go to Wake. They seem impressed that I was able to get in and keep up with the academic rigor as well as the steep tuition. Winston-Salem is by no means a "college town," but the Wake community does seem to rule. Often times we forget that other people live in Winston-Salem other than Wake students. Some of the biggest recent controversies include increasing next years' class size, faculty apartments, and parking. Parking definitely is the largest concern for students. Difficultly finding parking spaces on campus and the strictness of the parking enforcement are the students' most frequent complaints. One experience I will always remember about Wake is when the football team won the ACC Championship in 2006 and went to the Orange Bowl.

Jack

Best thing: small size I'd change: exclusiveness of greek life Size: just right Reaction: very favorable or never heard of it Time spent: on-campus when you live there, off when you live off Town: Wake is it's only little community within Winston-Salem Administration: old school but helpful Biggest controversy: juicycampus.com School pride: yes but not nearly as much as other schools Unusual about Wake: closed campus Experience to remember: Sigma Chi slip 'n slide parties Complaints: workload, no on-campus fraternity houses, tired of greek parties

Kelly

Wake is awesome! There are too many things that are awesome to pick out just one. One thing I would change would be the cafeteria/the student center. Also, it would be nice to have buses to both football and basketball games. Wake is just right size-wise, I don't want it to get any bigger! People are usually very impressed when I say I go to Wake Forest. I spend my time in different locations but mainly in my dorm room. Its sort of a college town. People like Wake here but there are also other things going on. I love Wake's administration. There were a couple muggings last semester that were pretty scary. There is a lot of school pride.

Becca

Beautiful environment, great people. Would like the administration to be more student-oriented. Love the size of the school, but many people in CA have never heard of it, or if they have its only because of the sports. Spend a lot of time in Benson when I'm not in class. Winston isn't much of a college town, but there is a lot of stuff to do around town. The administration isn't centered enough on making life easier for the students, seems like they are often trying to protect themselves against liability or trying to make the trustees happy. Biggest recent controversy was the Riley Skinner pics. Yes, lots of school pride, rolling the quad, etc. Frequent complaints about the food.

Dawson

The best thing about Wake is the motivation and drive everyone around me has. It pushes me to do my best and get involved around campus as well. I would change the grade deflation at Wake because it is discouraging to work really hard for mediocre grades. When I tell people I go to Wake, people usually either don't know where it is, or if they do know where it is, they react very positively. Wake is the perfect size. It is big enough that you don't know everyone and small enough to see many familiar faces and have small classroom settings. I usually spend most of my time on campus in Benson because you can socialize and have a space to work at the same time. I think Winston-Salem, though spread out, is a great college town because of its great bars and good, but affordable resturants. The juicy campus website has been a recent controversy because it contains offensive material for some on campus. I think there is a lot of school pride. As much as we hate the work, I feel like we are all proud and happy to be here. I will always remember toilet papering the quad after the Orange Bowl. The most frequent student complaints are about the lack of parking and grade deflation.

julie

-close knit campus, warm environment, -many northern people haven't heart of wake; one is either impressed or clueless -in benson working, the library, kd lounge -what college town -teachers are very involved with their students, but are under appreciated by the administration -the school lacks pride with sporting events -students complain about parking, food options, THE WORK LOAD

Amelia

The best thing about Wake is the size of the classes and the communication between Professors and students. However, if I could change one thing, it would be the registration process. Almost everyone loves Wake and I only know of one person who has transferred out. Most of my time is on campus. The parties are mainly house parties, but come junior year, most people go bar hopping on the week nights. The biggest controversy is the terrible (and expensive) parking situation. Tons of school pride- just come to the quad after any sports team wins! I will always remember my sorority bid day.

Charlotte

Wake is a very tight knit community. This allows for people to have friends that branch out and overlap in different groups. If I could change anything I would update the inside of the dorms and some of the academic buildings on campus. Winston Salem is a smaller town with a somewhat declining economy. It was once a mill town and since those industries have thinned out and Wachovia has moved its head courters to Charlotte, the town is not at its best. There is quite a bit of school pride in terms of academic excellence and sports.

Mary

best thing about wake is my friends and the friendly environment..I think its a great size...when people find out I am go to wake they are usually impressed...Winston is a nice town but its a little seedy in some parts and at time feels small

Lisa

The best thing about Wake to me is that I can walk across the mag quad and I'll always be able to say hi to someone, but I know that over my four years I won't ever be able to walk across it and know everyone. There is a lot of racial tension and division, and while it is getting a lot better it is still something that proves to be frustrating. I came from a southern, all-girls high school. I thought I wanted a much bigger institution but ended up coming to Wake rather randomly, and it ended up being a perfect transition. When I tell people that I go to Wake, the reaction is usually along the lines of, "Wow, smart!" (if they've heard of it that is.) Most of my time I spend on campus is on my hall, in Benson, or in the library. The area around Wake isn't the greatest- there are a lot of muggings and break-ins, but on campus is generally pretty safe. It isn't a college town persay, but the restaurants in Winston-Salem are to die for, and there are some pretty cute areas downtown and some nice gardens near campus as well. I would say there is a decent amount of school pride. Screamin Demons is a good idea and a lot of people participate, but there is also a sort of stigma that goes along with it, especially during football season where the Greek population is usually more interested in sundresses and ties and tailgating. That being said, we have had great turnouts at our bowl games. I do know that just about everyone is proud of the institution itself as well- its hard and we know it, and that makes us feel better than the state schools and other schools around our academic level. One unusual thing about Wake is the way the Greek system is set up. With the exception of one, the fraternities and sororities have halls and lounges on campus instead of actual houses. This prompts a lot of off campus parties at satellite houses. There are also a lot of old traditions that are specific to Wake Forest as well, such as the transition from societies to sororities.

Emily

I love the size of the school, small enough to know someone everywhere you go but big enough to see new faces everyday. I spend most of my time in the library, my room, and in the student center.

Elizabeth

The best thing about Wake is the small size with big resources...great athletics and amazing reputation, yet there aren't too many students. Yea sometimes it feels like a little bubble because, as a senior, I sometimes feel like I know most everyone, but most of the time it is a nice feeling. People are usually impressed when I say I go to Wake, not only for the academics but amazing athletics! "What college town"...yea besides Wake there isn't much to do in Winston-Salem. W-S has improved in my four years here, and W-S only has plans to get better. But, there is so much going on at Wake and with Wake students that there isn't really a need to look elsewhere.

Sasha

The best thing is the closeness of the campus. I think the size is just right. People react well when they learn I attend Wake. I spend most of my time in my dorm. "What college town" I don't really have an opinion about the administration. Biggest controversy is the increase in tuition. Tons of school pride. Most frequent complaint is about the college town

Kat

the best thing is the small community feel, small class sizes, and great academics-- you get out of it what you put into it. I'd definitely create more room for parking- maybe a well designed parking garage that still uphold the building integrity.

Hannah

Best thing about Wake -- it's size, we're a close student body. I would change the dorms -- they're too small and students often move off campus to have a larger space. Just right in size. When I say I go to Wake people usually are impressed. I spend most of my time on campus in my room doing work/sleeping our in my sorority lounge. "what college town." I generally like the administration but I don't know if they always have our best interests at heart. Biggest controversy -- Riley Skinner's naked pictures. Definitely a lot of school pride. Unusual about Wake -- it's very small but we have great involvement, lots of activities, lots of opportunity to do great things, and we're a student body that generally excels after graduation. An experience I will always remember is rolling the quad after the win against Maryland after a huge comeback. Most frequent student complaints are that classes are too difficult, and that professors schedule things back-to-back.

Jenny

The best thing about Wake is the people. Staff and students are very friendly. I would change the dorm rooms at Wake Forest. The suites on the quad are not ideal for living and studying. Wake is a great size!! I am concerned because it is growing in size and I do not think that it should. Most people are impressed when I tell them that I go to Wake. Other people have no idea where or what Wake Forest is. I spend most of my time in my room or in Scales at Wake. There is a lot of school pride, but there could be more.

megan

i think it is just the right size, im against increasing the size. the best thing about wake is the community. people react impressed usually that i go to wake. most of my time is spent in benson, the library, in the classroom. wake's administration is good and consistent, and they make it possible for students to actually change certain things within the school (it is perceived they often take the students' opinions into consideration). recent controversy: raising tuition, increasing size, moving a business coffee shop onto campus (Which would most likely put the current student-run coffee shop out of business). greek life is huge here but it is the most respectable greek life i have seen in a college setting (very good relationships between greek members). yes there is a lot of school pride. people are genuine and kind here. complaints: food (though a lot if changing over the summer, hopefully that will get better), off campus parties are a hassle.

Hannah

I love the size of Wake Forest. When I tell others that I go to Wake, they are usually impressed. I spend most of my time on the academic quad on campus. The administration here is very helpful and smart.

small student body size; expanding the new classes; just right; impressed, generally; benson; in between college town and no college town; controversy in terms of the future plan to enlarge the school, and making other changes; lots of school pride; strong division I sports; rolling quad; pit food is less than good

The best thing about Wake is the small campus. If I could change something, I would change the fact that social life is ruled by the Greek system. Wake is small, but it is just right (for me and for most of the student body, I think). Some people don't know where Wake is; other's just know its near Duke. Some even know it's a good school! I'm rarely on campus (because I live off campus), but I spend all my time in meetings in Benson. "What college town?????" I don't know too much about the administration-I've never been in trouble so I haven't had to deal with them. The biggest recent controversy on campus was whether or not to turn Shorty's into a commercial coffee house or to keep it because it is "historical". There is a lot of school pride, especially during football and basketball seasons. Having a small, unified campus allows people to be spirited together (i.e., rolling the quad). The only thing I find unusual about Wake is that our campus is such a small gated area, only containing 4 places to eat, whereas other campuses have restaurants and bars. One experience I'll always remember is my time spent in my sorority. The most frequent student complaints are about the workload!

the best thing is the small classes and being in the south with frats and sororities. I would change so that it is not such a bubble, however, and make it a better college town. I dont spend much time on campus anymore except for classes. Administration could be improved to do more to cater to the students (better choice of food, frat row instead of faculty housing, bars closeby in reynolda village etc) These seem to be some common complaints.

Choosing to go to Wake Forest was one of the easiest choices I ever made because of how much it had to offer me. What makes my life at Wake Forest the easiest for me is the size. It’s a big enough school that I constantly have new experiences with new people, but it’s still small enough that if I don’t know of someone, at least one of my friends probably will. When I’m not in class, I do a lot on and off campus with my sorority. You’ve probably heard that Greek life is a big deal at Wake, and it is. Overall, 42{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of all students are in a fraternity or a sorority, with 13 fraternities and 9 sororities. Although it’s a big part of my life here and my friends’ as well, many other students who don’t decide to “go Greek” find that they can form similar close bonds through athletic teams, religious groups, and clubs. That’s not to say that there isn’t tension between Greeks and non-Greeks, because at times there is. Independents, or GDIs, are known to Greeks as “geeds” or even “muggles”, which is Harry Potter-speak for non-magical people. It sucks, but it’s the social environment here. Other than that, I’m proud to go to be a sorority member here; it made it easier for me to be comfortable coming from an all-girls school and it helped me find my place here at Wake. As far as school pride goes, our fan base varies. I would categorize most of us as fair-weather fans, and fans of which sport varies from year to year. We used to be known for basketball, but in more recent years it’s been football. Members of the Greek community are less apt to throw on a black and gold tie-dye shirt and cheer at the game, instead attending the tailgates in button-downs and sundresses. Finally, the food on campus is generally considered pretty mediocre, but we really don’t have it so bad. We have a Subway on campus, Chikfila in Benson, and pit food. While the pit has been known to cause stomach issues, there is a fair amount of variety and provides a decent social atmosphere. It’s tough to complain since it’s a newer space and as they say, much improved.

Wake Forest is one of the best universities in the country because its professors truly care about its students. The school is the perfect size and allows students to get to know their professors in an intimate class setting. Plus, the administration truly cares about taking care of the students and making them as happy as possible. There's not a real college town atmosphere, but there's plenty to do on campus. School pride and school spirit are great on campus and athletics are huge - everyone goes to the games. I'll always remember dominating larger ACC schools in sports like football and men's basketball as well as watching our men's soccer team win a national title. Wake does an amazing job for its size in the ACC and in national contests.

The school is small but fit what I was looking for. Wake has a good reputation through out the US and 75{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the people I have encountered at least recognize the name. Winston-Salem is certainly not a college town, but it definitely grows on you. There are several great restaurants and it is relatively cheap. The off-campus houses are affordable and already "broken in." There is a lot of school pride, which came from the small school atmosphere. We also celebrate all sport victories and appreciate our status in the ACC.

Best thing about Wake: Faculty are amazing, great teachers, great friends; One thing to change: this place is a bubble and there is nothing to offer on campus in the way of restaurants, shops, grocery stores, etc.; The size of the school is just right; When I tell people I go to Wake, they usually associate it with our basketball team or football team or say that it's a good school (less frequently); I spend most of my time on campus in my room studying, working, procrastinating; Winston-Salem isn't a "college town," but it has a lot to offer as long as you are willing to drive 15 minutes to get there; Wake administration is bureaucratic, largely conservative (with blessed enclaves of more open-minded people), and at times downright old-fashioned; Biggest recent controversy: the school told professors living in faculty apartments that they had to leave at the end of the school year, etc.; There is a good deal of school pride, but I don't encounter it much with the group of people that I hang out with; Wake is unusual in lots of ways-- traditions, etc.-- but mostly it is a pretty standard southern school

The best thing was the good friend I met. The most frequent student complaint is that there's too much work.
