If you want to attend college in the Sunflower State, there are many scholarships in Kansas to apply for. High school and college students may need to attend a Kansas public or private university or be a Kansas resident to qualify for awards. Kansas has over 80 colleges, universities and technical schools. And in recent years, universities in Kansas awarded close to 54,000 degrees.
Many of these degrees were in agriculture. KS is home to one of the first land grant universities, Kansas State University.
But there are other popular majors to study too. Kansas awards degrees in liberal arts and sciences, nursing assistant, business and beyond.
To help you pay for school, there are college scholarships for Kansas students. And unlike loans, you don’t pay the money back.
Scholarship money tends to cover tuition and fees. Some are one time awards or they renew if you meet the conditions.
The cost of college in KS varies, and a few things impact it. For instance your residency and which institution you choose affects how much you pay for college.
As an in state student, the average cost of attending a public two year college is $4,087. But it’s more expensive ($7,937) if you come from out of state.
Four year colleges in Kansas also range in price. Public colleges tend to be more affordable options, especially for KS students.
KS students pay an average tuition of $6,545 compared to $17,808 for out of state students. Private colleges cost more, with an average of $26,300.
To apply for any scholarships in Kansas, you first have to qualify. You may also find some college scholarships in Kansas that are only for residents. Though plenty of Kansas scholarships are for out of state students too. There are scholarships for high school seniors, and college students alike.
Apart from where you are in your studies, there are likely other criteria to meet. Things like an acceptable GPA, financial need, or talent. For instance, athletic performance can help you win a state athletic scholarship.
Most providers list out details about what grades and test scores an applicant should have. They may also tell you they need your FAFSA application by a set date.
Once eligible, you fill out your form and attach any support documents. Scholarship awards will ask for references, test scores, transcripts and other documents. Then, send your package by or before the deadline.
Some Kansas colleges do offer full ride scholarships. A full ride scholarship is an award that pays for the entire cost of college. That means tuition, fees, housing, textbooks and supplies. Some even cover living costs such as travel to and from school.
To qualify for a full ride scholarship, you tend to need excellent grades. And while standards vary, most schools assess you on your SAT / ACT scores and GPA.
As you’d expect, full rides are prestigious. The Presidential Scholarship at Kansas State University (KSU) is a case in point.
Every year, two top students win a total award value of $80,000 each. To be a contender, you must have ACT scores of 32 + or SAT scores of 1450 +.
You also need a high school GPA of at least 3.85 and leadership qualities. If you are a high school senior and admitted to Kansas State University, you can apply.
As an out of state resident, a scholarship is likely to equal the cost of paying in state tuition. A full tuition scholarship doesn’t extras but may include fees.
One potential source is KSU. They offer the Heritage Scholarship for non Kansas residents and it’s worth $48,000. You may qualify if you are an out of state graduating senior with a high school GPA of at least 3.0. And, if one parent or grandparent (biological or adopted) graduated from K-State.
