Auburn University Top Questions

Describe the students at your school.

Allie

Auburn is very laid back. You can be as involved as you want to, and wear sweatpants and a tshirt to class! All students are accepting of each other and work well together. Although this is a very conservative southern school, I feel like people from the north or with less conservative views would still be accepted here! Most auburn students are from the south though. Auburn usually is full of more fortunate students, although it offers many scholarships to those less fortunate. Students are definitely politically active and aware and hold campaigns all throughout campus.

Meredith

segregated

Carly

Most students dress very causal for class. In this meaning t-shirts, running shorts, flip flops, jeans. Very seldom do I see some one dressed to the "T" for class.

Allison

I feel like there is a lot of separation between people who are in a sorority or fraternity and the people who are not greek. This is unfortunate because I am in a sorority, but my boyfriend is not and it can cause some controversy at times.

Katherine

I think some people would say that if you aren't Greek you won't fit in. For me, it would have been alot more difficult to meet people and make friends if I had not gone Greek, but it would have been possible. The people that struggle with this should take advantage of what Auburn has to offer and join one of its many organizations. I have found that those individuals who do not go Greek and do not try to get involved are still surrounded by their high school friends and home town friends and are missing out on meeting new people. Auburn has so much going on all the time that people cannot use not going Greek as an excuse of not knowing people.

Ali

I think Auburn does a great deal of diversity work on campus. At camp war eagle and SOS they have a whole session devoted to just diversity, and not just race. Its about LGBT, cultural backgrounds and where people came from to come to AUburn. People are very casual to class: tshirts, jeans, athletic clothes. Although its not uncommon to see students very dressed up in case they have to go to work or an interview after class.

Julia

Everyone is generally nice. I havent experienced much racism or certain groups on campus. Greek life is big here but its not to the point where if your not greek you cant be successful on campus. It is a perfect mix of all types.

Sarah

I love Auburn's student body. I feel like anyone could fit in here. You don't have to try to impress people, you can just roll out of bed and go to class in a tee shirt and no make up and no one judges you. I couldn't go to a school where you had to dress up for class. Also, there is an organization for almost every interest a person could have so whatever you are interested in you are guaranteed to find others who share that interest.

Kris

The student body is active in every aspect of college life. There is an organization for every religious, racial, political, hobby, activity I can even tihnk of. It would be very hard to prove that the student body isn't active in any one stereotype.

Brooke

A lot of people are racist here because they were raised in the south that way, which is really upsetting.

Alli

Were in the south so religion is pretty big here! All of my friends and I attend church on a regular basis. Most Auburn students are from Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Texas, Tennessee, and Virginia. Since this is a big school, there are SO many clubs to get involved in, which is a wonderful way to meet people! Sororities are only a small percentage of Auburn's student body, but the best thing I have ever joined in my life!

Allison

I don't really think many people feel out of place at Auburn, or at least not that I know of. Most students, like myself, don't get dressed up for class unless it is required (presentation of some sort). I throw on a pair of shorts/sweats and a t-shirt. I don't really have any experiences with racial issues or socio-economic issues thus far.

Brooke

I think the student body as a whole at Auburn is very diverse. There are people from all over the United States. I think that many people are not open to the idea of gays or interracial relationships, but this idea is partly due to the "Southern mentality." Many of my friends grew up very sheltered, and I can see that through other students at Auburn as well.

Mary

All groups are accepted on Auburn's campus. Of course, there will always be people who do not agree, but in general everyone is accepted. Most students dress very casually to class. Some sort of casual shorts or pants and a t-shirt usually. Most Auburn students are from the south. Majority Alabama and Georgia.

Alex

My experiences at Auburn so far have been great. I dont think many students would feel out of place at Auburn. Students generally wear jeans/pants and a t-shirt to class but do not look sloppy. i have found that the mojority of Auburn students are from Georgia and Alabama however one of my best friends is from California here, and there are many other out of staters such as myself.

Katherine

Auburn’s student body feels a lot more diverse than it really is statistically. Greek life seems to be a moderately big thing on campus. There is a unity among all of the different greek members though. Each sorority and fraternity supports the others philanthropic events and promote relationships. You see all types of outfits all over campus. Personally I am usually in a t-shirt with a jacket when necessary.

Sara

Most of my friends at Auburn are from Birmingham. It's really weird coming here and having everyone you meet already have a set group of friends. That's the reason I left Atlanta was to make new friends but having EVERYONE come from Birmingham made it somewhat difficult at the start of freshman year.

Addison

I haven't had much experience kids on campus are great. I don't think that many people can feel out of place here there seems to be a group for everyone. Most students wear jeans, shorts, and t-shirts. Yeah i think that different types of students interact but there is a large greek system. Table one has most students from alabama, come from middle/upper class families, usually conservative. Table two has students from the southeast, come from middle/upper families, conservative and liberal. Table three has students from the north, usually liberal, come from middle class families. Table four has mostly students from out west, usually liberal, comes from lower/middle class families.

Kaitlin

Auburns student body is very involved whether it be with sports, SGA, greek life, ROTC...everyone seems to be involved with something. There is a group on campus representing every religion, political view, and sexual preference. Everyone is pretty comfortable here with being themselves, I think. I am one of those never dress up for class girls, throw my hair in a pony tale, and i have never felt out of place. People may think because we are a southern school in Alabama that there are alot of racial issues but I dont feel there are. I mean when it comes to Greek Life there are very few different races mized between the White and Black sororities but there are some. Surprisingly I feel that there are more out of state students that I know then students from Alabama. I feel that most people who come here are pretty well off or they are on scholarship.

Lauren

Most Auburn students seem to be from Georgia (the Atlanta area in particular) and Alabama.

Whitney

I feel like any student that comes to Auburn would fit in. From my point of view, there are no racial, religious, etc. problems on are campus. Of course many people believe in different things here, but nobody declares it in a way that would offend another person. Students come from everywhere, but all seem to mesh well as a student body.

Allison

Conservative and traditional

Dean

I think there is a place for everyone at Auburn.

Amelia

I would say that any student who doesn't fit the ''conservative'' type of personality would feel very out of place. I feel like the group of kids who aren't involved in greek life or sports and that act crazy when they go out would be the most out of place. Most girls wear gym shorts, jeans, or sweatpants with t shirts and guys tend to wear khakis or jeans with tshirts and polos. I don't really see that many different kind of students interacting... Everyone just tends to stay with their own groups of friends. The financial backgrounds are very different because there are so many out of state kids who are paying almost 3 times as much as in state. I would say that students are very politically aware and active and they are mostly on the right side.

kelly

Most students wear casual clothes to class but most stay within their own groups of friends and people.. Most students are from Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee. Most people are in between middle class and upper middle class. Students are more politically conservative.

Elizabeth

there are alot of groups on campus there is something for everyone and if there is not then you are able to start one up. no student will be out of place there is something for everyone. students are from everywhere. mostly from the south though.

Alysen

I have never felt out of place in Auburn because I quickly found my own niche. By looking at the students here, Auburn is mostly white kids, so if that bothers people they might not feel comfortable. Most students usually wear whatever is comfortable to class, and that usually means t-shirts, jeans, and flip-flops. Most students are from Alabama or the Atlanta area. The kids from Alabama are from all types of financial backgrounds. And the kids from Atlanta are usually middle-upper class or higher, they have to be able to afford the out of state tuition. Political views are mostly conservative, but I have many friends who are liberal and I have no problem with that. Everyone is entitled to their own thoughts and views.

Courtney

Auburn's student body is very friendly. Most students wear Tshirts and jeans or shorts to class. Most Auburn students are from either Georgia or Alabama.

Natalie

Pretty religious student body. A lot of students are involved in Impact, Younglife, etc. Also a very conservative student body. It is a southern school so majority of the students are very republican and supportive of conservative views. We are pretty big on greek life. You will see a lot of students wearing a sorority or fraternity t-shirt to class. Everyone is very casual during the day but at night we dress up to go out. Auburn has very attractive, well-mannered kids. Most students are from Alabama or Georgia with the rest of the majority coming from Tennessee and Florida. Alot of students drive nice cars, wear nice clothes, etc. It is obviously because of how they were raised. They don't tend to flash it around though, I think most students are pretty modest.

Molly

Auburn's student body is a close family. We are all there for each other and help each other no matter their race, religion or financial staus. When i came to Auburn I immediately had a whole new family(the student body).

Dylan

Most Auburn students are from Alabama.

Allison

People from the north would feel out of place in the student body. I remember coming down here from Maryland, which people call the north, but if they knew anything about geography they would know that its below the mason dixon line and is technically a mid atlantic state... people would call me a damn yankee and just completely ignore me... All people really care about is getting married. it's weird.

Meg

I feel like Auburn's student body is made up of all about the same people.

Rachael

The student body is very supportive of everything on Auburn's campus. Students can come together and enjoy whatever task is at hand. It takes a more well-off student financially to attend Auburn, especially those out of state.

Katherine

Auburn is a very southern school in Alabama, but it is also (somewhat) diverse. Students at Auburn are very active in what they do here on campus. There are over 200 organizations on campus. Students are predominatly conservative, but there still are many liberals on campus. There is a place for everyone on Auburn's campus, but sometimes its hard to find them.

Kirstin

Auburn has a very diverse student body, but every one is so friendly - which is why I love Auburn so much.

Elizabeth

I haven't experienced any trouble with races or religious. I have discovered that religion and religious believes are a good discussion topic with friends. Most students wear shorts, jeans, or sweatpants and t-shirts, which is much more comfortable. There are big populations of people from Huntsville, Birmingham, Montgomery, Mobile, and Atlanta.

Carey

Auburn has a great student body but its mainly white, people often refer to Auburn as a private school compared to the University of Alabama.

Alyssa

I feel like Auburn is a "white" school, mostly Christian, but thats not all true. Most studest wear jeans and a t-shirt to class, comfortable but cute. Most students are from the south and are decently well off.

Rory

I think the student body is pretty diverse for the most part. Auburn seems very conservative in alot that it does. All the people are very friendly and nice.

Ashlyn

I feel that Auburn is a very diverse school. A student being another color from a totally different country not knowing English would feel out of place here. Most students wear a t-shirt and shorts or comfortable clothes to class. Yes different students interact. I am apart of the Greek organiztion and a lot of times I am in study groups with non Greeks.

Kristy

Auburn's student body is like no other. There is not much diversity, but the pride is overwhelming. We call it the Auburn Family and there could not be a better truth to that phrase.

Torry

My experiences with racial, religious, LGBT, socio-economic et al groups is somewhat limited by a) the Auburn culture, b) my status as a graduate student and c) by the fact that so many organizations exist on campus. A student who does not belong to a Greek organization, an African American student who is not an athlete and a graduate student in general would feel out of place at Auburn due to a) the predominant white/Greek/Republican/football-oriented culture and b) the fact that most graduate students have lives and careers outside their graduate classes. Most students practice informal dress codes on campus. Different types of students do not interact most of the time. The four tables of students in the dining hall are one for African American students, one for white students, one for avant grade people and one for students from the same country. Most Auburn students are from the state of Alabama and the surrounding Southeast. I really do not what financial backgrounds are most prevalent, though I can guess that middle class is the plurality background. Based on attendance at debates between the College Democrats and College Republicans and the level of participation in SGA elections, I would say that students are not politically active. They are predominantly right. They do not talk a lot about how much they'll earn one day.

Tressa

I have not had experiences with any groups on campus. Sometimes there is the Black Student Union on campus, but they just keep to themselves. - I've seen every kind of student at Auburn so I don't think that there is a student who would feel out of place. - Most students wear jeans and t-shirts to class. - No, the different student types normally keep to their own group. - The frat/sorority. The blacks. The grunge/punk. The smart kids. - Most Auburn students are from the south of the United States. - Students are mostly from middle class families. - Students are predominantly conservative, but most are not involved in politics. - Yes, students want to earn a lot of money when they have a job.

Kenneth

Auburn is not a very diverse place. Almost all of the students who are not athletes are Caucasian, and most of them are middle-class fraternity brothers (or so it seems). Homosexual students probably do not feel very welcome at Auburn, because we have a lot of street preachers who yell at them from time to time. Most Auburn students are from Alabama and Georgia, though we get a few from other states. Students are predominantly right-wing neoconservatives, but the Democrat minority is very outspoken. I have never had a conversation about future salary with another student, and I don't expect that I ever will. Most people aren't concerned with impressing others about their standard of living after graduation.

Charlie

There are many different diverse groups at Auburn, which makes us seem so homey. Although most students at AU are conservative, all are involved politically some kind of way. We are always optimistic about what life will be like after college, though we'll miss the great university that teaches us life lessons.

Elizabeth

I wear my pajamas to class; the point of going to class isn't to impress people. Most students who go to Auburn are from Alabama but a good chunk come from Tennessee, Georgia and Florida. When you think of Auburn students you think of Right wing but it surprised me with how many Liberals were on campus. I've never really heard students talk about money, especially how much they'll make some day.

Katherine

The pride Auburn students have for their school never stops amazing me. Walking around campus on any given day you see more Auburn shirts than any other shirt. Every student takes so much pride it is truly a wonderful thing to be a part of.

Morgan

Auburn is a very diverse campus and not one person would feel out of place here. Every background is represented here at our university. Someone wearing sweatpants and no make up to class will not get odd stares nor would one who wore black slacks and high heels to class. The diversity of our campus makes us a desirable school for anyone from any background.

Nicole

-Southern Religious people. It is the Typical "Southern" University -You can find everything as far as what people wear. Flip-Flops and Sunglasses are a must -Most students from Alabama or Ga. Although some from Mississippi, and Texas (Southern States) -Higher Class (financial Background) -Not much talk about money (Old Southern Money)
