What are the academics like at your school?

Stephanie

Classes are very challenging at Auburn. My freshman year I realized that and have been trying hard to get back the GPA that I feel I am comfortable with. The sciences are definitely the hardest out of all the classes.

Blair

My favorite classes are any of Mark Walter's classes. He knows what he is talking about. I also loved rtvf3970 last semester with Jack Smith. I learned more in this class working hands on and directly with people than in any other class at Auburn.

Amy

I think my favorite classes are the ones that the teacher knows your name. Some of the classes are too big, but those are usually the unimportant classes (like the core classes). I have kind of a different set up than most majors on campus. I am an interior design major, and we have a limited amount of people in our major and are all in the same classes. So the classes that are most important to me are some of my favorite, and do happen to be a smaller class.

Kristina

my biggest complaint would have to be the way they make the registering proccess for the students when are trying to do our schedules. The school should realize how many undergraduate students need to take certain core classes and make them more available for us to be able to get enough hours to complete our Freshmen and Sophomore year. It's not fair that i am behind or i get more stressed out just because they don't make enough classes for what? 20 something thousand students... But other than that i would say that academics are pretty tough here, but that is good because it keeps us up to our potential and helps us grow

Alex

I lOVE all of my professors right now in the classes that I am taking. Most of them seem like they would genuinely like to help their students. I am in the college of science and math and they are extremely helpful in registering and such.

Sara

Academics at Auburn are great as well. It really depends on what college you are in to say whether or not they are competitive, but overall I feel everyone is here to help everybody out. I am proud to say that I am an Auburn student because I feel we have a great academic system and the requirements for acceptance are higher than the "other" school in Alabama. I have had several professors that I have gotten to know personally and it is great to know that many professors are willing to help you even after you've completed their class. I have one professor that was my english teacher last year that I often go visit her during her office hours just to say hi and see how things are. Auburn is also very very helpful when it comes to getting scholarships and finding a job after college, which is very important to me! I have spoken to many alumni who said when they went to interview for jobs, most employers either went to Auburn or have alot of respect for Auburn graduates. Our business school is amazing with connections and helping students find jobs. They, as well as the other colleges and organizations on campus, hold career and job fairs several times a semester that invite major companies as well as the small mom/pop companies that are recruting interns or employees. Auburn students are really focused on their studies for the most part... It's not uncool to go to the library instead of going to the bar for the night. Most people understand why they are at college so they will sit down and study when they need to. It's actually funny because when I go to the library I feel like I can't get up and walk to the bathroom because I will get caught up talking to someone I know.

My favorite class this year has been Sociology. My teacher is a Graduate Student, so he is young and very understanding of his students. He can communicate on the same level of us. My least favorite has been Concepts of Science. My teacher is foreign and didn't even major in Science, so the class is very difficult.

Brittany

My academic life at Auburn has been great. Although many of my professors do not know me personally, they are always willing to help. I have had classes with 20 people and others with 200 people...it just depends on the course. I go to the majority of my classes and enjoy most of them.

Torry

Academics at Auburn depends on what you put into it. If you attend class regularly, ask questions and come prepared, professors will most likely know your name. If they don't, it is nothing personal, it is just that they have too many students with such little time.

Barbara

When I attended Auburn, classes in the business school were basically lecture--not much interaction with professors or other students outside of the classroom. I think all universities are realizing that this method is ancient, and are moving more toward learning communities, etc. I never felt my professors were very accesssible--somewhat intimidating, but I never made much of an effort, either. My daughter is in the college of Human Sciences and finds her professors and administration very accessible and helpful.

Allie

I feel like my classes are the perfect size. Although some of them have up to 100 people, I still feel like I am getting everything out of the class and learning to my full potential. My favorite class is actually my biggest one, history. To me, the enjoyment of the class is all about the professor. My professor is very involved with the students and makes class fun! class participation is a major part of the class. Academic requirements are tough, but I like it because it further encourages me to do my best! Auburn's education is mostly geared towards getting jobs because the advisers help so much to get the students involved with internships and jobs in the future.

Meredith

fairly easy to get into

Carly

I feel that some classes are more student involvement oriented than others. I am currently enrolled in one of the first classes where student participation was neccessary and I have enjoyed it very much. I think if classes were more participation oriented that they would be much more interesting.

Allison

I like how most classes, once you are done with your core classes, are relativley small at Auburn. That way, you can actually get to know your teacher, and vice versa.

Katherine

When I first came to Auburn I was extremely nervous about large classes, having gone to a small private school all my life. But now, I actually enjoy the large classes more. I like having a mixture of both small and large classes. It gives me something to look forward to about each class and more variety.

Ali

My favorite class at Auburn was gothic literature taught by Dr. Gresham. It wasn't the topic that was taught, although it was very interesting to approach such gothic books in the way that Dr. Gresham had us do, but the teacher who taught it. We didn't just sit there and talk about setting, theme, chracters and such but we analyzed it in intense class discussion. It was an hour and a half class that felt like it was 15 minutes. He engaged the class in discussions everyday that never got dull. Professors are really good at learning names and being able to take roll while everyone is walking into class, and I really appreciate that, it makes you feel known. I feel I get a lot of help out of my department. Whether its encouragement to apply for scholarships, or help to find internships or just getting into the right class, the teachers and guidance are more than willing to go out of their way to help a student. The education is definately geared toward learning more than you can get this career with this major, which I appreciate but I would also like to have an idea of what else I can do rather than the typical write for a newspaper.

Julia

I have had some extremely good professors, as well as, some extremely terrible ones. One of the problems is that Auburn is a research University, which means, alot of the professors come here from other countries to do research. It is a great program but frustrating to have that communication barrier wish some teachers. I love my major. I am a nutrition/dietetics major, and its really hard but i love it so much.

Sarah

My biggest problem here was not knowing WHAT to major in. I think all freshmen should have to take a class in which the sole purpose is to explain different occupations and what each kind of job entails and how much school is required for it so they can get a feel for what they want to do.

Kris

The professors are all really trying to help out their students. They may not all know your name, but they would know your face.

Brooke

I have loved all of my teachers

Alli

Academics is pretty big part of my life! I have loved basically all of my teachers! They are so helpful and very willing to help you! My Chemistry teacher right now (Dr Meda) is in his office M-F from 7-3 everyday to answer any questions, plus he holds all of these study sessions Tuesday nights at 5:30 to go over anything! The only tacher I have had a problem with was an English teacher who was stuck in UVA. I see many teachers out at games and sit and talk to them! Even the classes that have 200 students, if you make the effort to go to their office hours and get help, the teachers help you out and in the long run you benefit!!! As a Freshmen the best class was Auburn Experience and Success Strategies were great and helped me learn about real life situations and great information about Auburn's history, plus I had the best tacher (John Pennic or 2.5)

Allison

Once again, the way in which you get to sign up for classes is kind of too hectic. You could be on the right track to graduate and then the 1 or 2 classes you need are CLOSED. I have enjoyed most of my professors here at Auburn so far. Each professor provides so many opportunities to gain extra knowledge and review material. The education here is most definitely geared toward getting a job. The College of Education constantly is preparing us so one day we will be able to get that teaching job.

Brooke

The academics at Auburn are definitely at an elevated level. At times it is difficult to find an open time to meet with my advisor due to the mass amount of students needing help, but at the same time, me advisor is extremely helpful. The professors are usually open to help outside of the classroom, and willing to find time to make appointments that fit into each students schedule.

Mary

Most of the academics as Auburn has been a pretty positive experience for me. The only problem that I have had is with the non-American professors. It is hard to learn from someone who barely understands the english language.

Alex

Professors in smaller classes once you get into your major know your name i have had several professors get to know my name in my classes. There is a lot of in class participation in the smaller classes such as english and foreign languages not so much in history classes or the larger lecture classes. i think the education is geared to getting a job but also learning for ones own sake. i am currently a nursing major so once my classes are more geared to my major i know i will be spending more time one on one wiht my professors.

Katherine

Auburn’s academics are challenging and provide a good structure for students to mature and learn around. I have not come across a professor in six semesters that was not willing to help when asked or was not qualified for his/her job. There are immense opportunities for students to join extracurricular activities and get involved with academic honor societies. I wouldn’t say there were an abundance of intellectual conversations between students going on outside of classes but many professors do incorporate class discussions into their lectures.

Sara

My favorite class so far has been the Intro to Psychology class. My least favorite has probably been either World History I or World History II. It's pretty common for Auburn students, especially freshman and sophomores, to not attend class. However, these students (like me) come to realize that attending class can really help your grade.

Addison

Some of my professors know my name. My favorite class has been the hdfs class current issues because there is a lot of participation and it is very interesting. My least favorite would have to be any core class such as history, english, biology. Yes, the library is always packed! Yes, there always tends to be the people in class who always speak up. There are many auburn students who have intellectual conservations outside of class. There are some competitive students but i dont know many. The most unique class i've taken is probably success strategies. My major is Human Development and Family Studies. I really like the classes and the department is amazing. Everyone is very helpful, encouraging and nice. No i dont spend time with my professors unless i go to their office with questions. I feel that Auburn's academic requirements are being raised and I think that is a good thing. I think that it is both getting a job and learning.

Kaitlin

Although there are a lot of big classes, the two that I have had the professors have known my name. They try really hard to do that. There are also a lot of small classes like all my Spanish ones and English ones. A great thing that Auburn offers is the Living Learning Community for your freshmen year where people from the same college such as Liberal Arts or COSAM all live together in the same dorm and take three classes together. It is a great way to feel comfortable in class becuase you know all the people in it. I am in the Liberal Arts college and the advisors are amazing. They know exactly what you need to take next and do in order to graduate in four years. Professors are ALWAYS willing to help you. I cant tell you how many times I have been to a teachers office for help after class. They know that that is part of their job, too.

Lauren

For the most part, what I like most about the classes here are that most teachers are easily understood (i.e. accents, english speaking ability).

Whitney

I think that Auburn academics are very strong. I am in pre-nursing right now and I know that getting into Nursing is a very hard task. The program is very competitive and students are well prepared when they leave. I believe the nursing curriculum is very well put together and the classes taken will benefit you in the long run.

Allison

Very reputable

Dean

Most of my professors know my name. Also, I have enjoyed every major class I have taken so far; math and science cores have been a pain though.

Amelia

My favorite class is definitely Micro with Mr. Finck because he is so fun and a great teacher. Students study different amounts and I am in the library a lot for my different classes. Class participation is much more common in smaller classes than in auditorium classes. I would say that the education at Auburn is definitely geared toward getting a job. In my major (business) they offer different courses that have speakers and new people come in to help you get clued in and find out what type of job in that major would be the best match for you.

kelly

In my small classes my professors know me, but not in the larger ones. I don't have a favorite class. Ethics is my least favorite because it's very hard to understand. Students study enough. My major is RTVF and i love it. I love the department of Communication and Journalism. The education is aimed at both learning and training for the real world.

Elizabeth

Some of my professors know my name in the smaller classes but most of my classes are very big. my favorite part about classes is that most of the teachers make them interestering. students are competitive about their grades. the most unique class I have taken is auburn experience. the classes are geared toward getting a job

Alysen

In certian classes my teachers know my name, others don't. It really depends on the class size or the teacher. Some teachers don't care to know who we are. I'm not the type to go talk to a teacher on a regular basis, so some of my teachers don't know me. My favorite class in college was the history class I had to take for my core requirements with Dr. Kicklighter. He is the best teacher I have had. Least favorite would have to be Business Law or Principles of Marketing. Boring! I personally study all the time this semester because I have had at least on test each week, and I cannot afford to get bad grades. Class participation depends on the teacher. Some teachers like that, others just read from slides. Students are always competitive whether or not they show it. No one wants to hear that the kid sitting next to them did better on a test. I'm a Finance major and it is very challenging, but I think it should be. I dont spend time with professors outside of class, unless I go to their office for help. I hope that the classes I'm taking will prepare me for my job after college, but I won't know that until I get that job. But I feel that the professors are teaching us the basics to prepare us.

Courtney

I love my major because I love knowing that I am getting one of the best educations in my major that I can. All of the classes I have taken I have loved except math and computer. The academic requirements are confusing because, even though everyone has the same Auburn requirements, it seems as though different classes are required. For example, I am only allowed to take Physics, or Chemistry yet I know many people that are taking other science classes.

Natalie

My major is Apparel Design in the Human Sciences college. Human Sciences is a wonderful college. Everyone is very helpful and it is very close knit. I have had the same classes with the same people since freshman year so you kind of feel like a team getting through all of you classes together. Professors in my college are willing to help with whatever you need, classes are fun but you must study. Just like any other college, it depends on what kind of student you are but everyone has to study to get through. We have the second largest library in the nation. It is always packed but by far the best place to get stuff done. You would usually be able to find someone in your class there if you ever had a question. It is open 24 hours during exams.

Mallory

In most of my classes professors do not know people by name. I enjoy my smaller classes best and I wish that all classes were that way especially science classes. My favorite class so far has been Sociology and my least favorite has been Chemistry. Students study quite a bit here on campus and class participation is not very common. I have yet to have a very intellectual conversation with a student outside of class and I feel that a lot of students are very competitive.

Molly

My professors know my name, even if it is a class of 300+ students. I enjoy going to class because I meet a lot of friends in my classes. I always make new friends at the beginning of each semester when I start new classes. Meeting people in my classes helps me to get invovled on campus and do better with my grades.

Dylan

Professors know my name most of the time. I study alone at home.

Allison

I guess I just dont like school in general, if i liked school Auburns academics would be fine.

Meg

The only thing I do not like about academics at Auburn are the huge classes and never being involved with the class or teachers.

Rachael

I do know my professor's name. For the most part, professors are very eager to help their students with whatever they may need. There are always a few teachers who are exceptions to that rule. My favorite subject at Auburn is Math. I've grown up with a bias towards Math.

Katherine

There is definately a variey of classes on Auburn's campus. You can take anywhere from gardening to Intermediate accounting, from golf to a stress reduction class. The teachers at Auburn are always willing to help and challenge you. Like all universities there are a few teachers that you definately DO NOT want to take, but there are also those that are considered the ones that guide you through the class and possibly help you find a job!

Kirstin

Auburn administration is only interested in helping the students to achieve their goals. I have never felt uncomfortable talking to any of my professors or asking for help.

Elizabeth

academics at Auburn are what one would expect from a college campus. They are not too hard but not easy either. My favorite class is Scuba. I have found that if you take a easy fun class it makes the semester go by much faster and much more enjoyable. It takes some of the pressure off.

Carey

Academics at Auburn are good i feel, except for they vary alot. Everything depends on the teachers that you get which i feel is very unfair.

Alyssa

Professor, if it is not a huge class, will know your name. My favorite class right now is my english class. My professor is amazing and she teaches cultural diversity. I feel like im getting a great education.
