What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Michelle

Remember to always stay on track and do your best. Education is vital and charity never fails either. And lastly love what you do.

Chantel

I would tell myself three things: 1. Get the best grades you can. I wish I had put my mind more towards my studies at first. Instead of seeing my classes as an opportunity to learn something more in depth than ever before, I treated them the same as high school classes--something to get through. 2. Follow your heart and interests. I wasted time taking classes for a major that I thought would lead to a good job even though I knew the material didn't interest me. I found a major that fits me now, and I'm much happier, though it will take me a little longer to graduate. 3. Be involved. There's TONS of stuff to do on campus. I would say to balance activities between service projects, academic or cultural clubs, and of course, fun stuff like dances and games! There will be no other time in life like this!

Karen

Well, I am a high school seinor and to be completely, one hundred percent honest, I have no idea what college is going to be like. However I do know that striving to achieve a higher education is taking a step in the right direction. I want so much to live a successful life and live to the best of my abilities, and college is going to help me do that. I also love learning and gaining knowledge. Any advice I can give myself now, is to take the plunge. Having goals are pointless if you are not willing to work toward them. And going to the Univerity of my dreams and being the first in my family to graduate from college is my goal. Filling out this scholarship and taking the initiative to achieve my goal is getting me just that much closer to fulfilling my dreams.

If I went back in time to give myself advice about the transition into college I would tell myself to get a higher gpa. I would also tell myself to apply for more scholarships. If I ever had one it would have been so helpful. I would tell myself to be careful what I bought. Every cent counts. Ask counselors about classes I need to take so that I don;t waste time taking classes I don't need. Do everything ahead of time, so there is no chance it will be late. So many opportunities are lost when things are done too late. That's all the advice I would give myself. There are so many things that advice wont help with. A person just needs to experience thing to understand. The transition into college is another one of those things.

Hannah

I would remind myself to take things slow and realize that this is a huge step into my future. I would spend more time in high school searching and exploring careers. I would look at labor market information to make my decision on a career that will take me places in life. Spending time looking at the different careers and occupations and making comparisons would be the biggest thing I would do before I went to college. I would also take advantage of the social clubs the school has to offer before I started. Getting involved in school activities proved to be one of the biggest choices I had to make. Having the opportunity to be involved in student government helped me to reach out to other students to make them feel comfortable in the college life. There is so much preparation for college and starting out sooner with these preparations makes it much easier once that first day of school arrives.

Bart

If I could go back in time and give myself advice about how to prepare for a the transition to college life I would tell myself that what is learned in the classroom is just a small part of the education you should receive in school. You can benefit and progress just as much if not more from involvement in extracurricular activities than from what is taught in classes or read in a book. Your education should not be limited to the course curriculum but should encompass everything you see, think about, and experience each and every day. Never hold back. Never give anything but your absolute best effort. Put EVERYTHING you have and are into EVERYTHING you do. Life is too short to not realize your extraordinary potential.

sunmi

Hi sunmi. Have you ever watched the movie the Dead Poets Society? If you watch this movie, you will become familiar with the Latinphrase Carpe Diem. In the movie, a teacher, Mr. Keating, shouted this phrase to his students. Carpe Diem means “seize the day”, or in other words, seize the pleasures of the moment instead of being under the pressure of the future. I want to say " Carpe Diem" to you.

Ashlen

I would tell myself that you never regret being too kind, studying too hard, or doing your absolute best in all that you do. You will however regret not doing all of those things. I would tell myself that getting by with the minimum does not prepare you in any way for things to come in the future. True self esteem and confidence comes from taking pride in your work and the decisions you make daily, so make good choices in school, sports, friends, and all that you do. Enjoy being a kid, because as stressful as you think your life is now, it only gets harder. That's not to say that it doesn't get better though, because it does. Appreciate your relationships with those you love. Spend time with your family and little brothers while you can, because even though you think you can't wait to get away, you'll miss them very much. Lastly, listen to the people who love you. No one has your best interest at like your parents do, turns out they knew what they were talking about all those years.

The advice i have is to improve the quality, flavour, and value of the envionment at the university. i hope to attend with excertion on my part. With labour of every part of my organization it require, wether it be mental, physical, or spiritual. I plan to live my religion and enjoy the light and the glory of the restored gospel for myself, be passive, humble and faithful; rejoys continually before the Lord, attend to the business i called to do, and be sure never to do anything wrong.

Emily

Some advice I would give to highschoolers entering college would get involved and plan ahead! Your first two years are a great time to join clubs and find activities that you want to invest in. Check out all of the different events your college is hosting, ask fellow students in your major what kind of clubs they are in, and get to know your teachers. Teachers have access to great resources and information about college functions that could be useful to you major and outside institutions that may offer scholarships or intership opportunities. College's are designed to help students learn and achieve great things. Get invovled and exhaust all the opportunites that are avaliable. You are only there for four years so don't waste any time!

Rachel

"Don't apply to a college just because it's what you're supposed to do next. Decide what you really want to do with your life before applying, it will help you to pick a school. Also, don't go to college for something that you're good at already, go to learn. PS, you want to be a chef in the future."

Kaycee

I would have told myself to pay a lot more attention in English class, I did not realize at the time how important essays and papers are in University. I would have told myself to start planning a lot sooner so that I would have had a better idea of the options that were available to me. I would have told myself to learn how to cook better and how to grocery shop effectively. These are important skills that can be hard to pick up.

Hannah

Time management is KEY! Nothing will work in lif if you can't budget for it! (time, money, etc.)

Keona

I would tell myself to keep striving for the best and to never give up. Also, although I may be miles away from home I should not be afraid of the transition because it is part of growing up and the friends you make in college will soon become your family.

Jamie

The world was a very different place back in 1973 when I graduated from high school. There were few female doctors or dentists and most women were in the teaching profession if they had any advanced degrees at all. I earned my associates degree at the age of 50 after being out of college for over 30 years. If I could go back in time I would continually remind myself that life evolves. It is not stagnant and unresponsive and that we must always continue to move forward and that life is all about learning at any age.

Tyler

After the initial shock of realizing the person in front of me was my future-college-self, I would hope he was about to give me sound advice that would lead me to be even more successful than him. The first thing that would help me to hear would be not to linger between decisions. Being in the middle does not leave any room for motivation. I hope that he would help convince me to make an informed decision and own it. Move forward with it, and then if it is still not working out after working very hard and doing everything possible, then there may be room for an informed adjustment. It is not until you have given your all in something, anything, that you will know whether it is something that is meant for you. I would also hope, in making the decision, to be told to do what I really want to do, no matter the challenge and the hike ahead. A good challenge is the best motivation, and an accomplished challenge brings the highest satisfaction.

Fredisha

I would of studied harder and stayed focused on the important areas in my life to prepare myself for the future. I should of given my full commitment to my academics more than having a social life and dealing with personal issues. I could of taken high school more seriously as far as studying harder, and going the extra mile in researching information. I should of become better at organizing and balancing my time. I needed to become prepared with understanding time mangement as far as working fulltime, attending school to get excellent grades, and any other outside commitments I had. I should of been my self - motivator to acheive my goals instead of depending on others to motivate me. Most of all I would of improved my perserverance, resilience dedication ,and deterimination to become better prepared for the future and to have a smooth transition into my college life.

Hoiki

I guess I would tell myself to be better prepared academically, so that I would handle all those difficult works in university. Also, I think it is also worth trying to join more volunteer community services, which helps to develop a helping and unselfish personality. Also the experiences in communitiy service is useful in applying for the univeristy and the scholarship, too. Besides, it would be good to learn more of different skills, so that you could realize what is your true interest. Thus, you could save the time on changing majors all the time. Knowing what you want to be after graduation, could help you to have a clear goal in univeristy. These all would be very helpful. For the most important, be well prepared, do all the things needed for the application, do not wait until the last minute.

Attending college has really helped me develop good habits that will help me later on in life. I've learned to stand on my own without the help of my parents and take responsibility for my life. I feel that I've been able to grow not only as a student but as an individual. It has taught me accountability and dedication and that good, honest work will get you the farthest in the long run. It has helped me grow socially by forcing me out of my comfort zone and putting me in situations where I've had to defend and support my thinking and my personal beliefs. I think the most valuable thing that I've gained from being here is learning how to find common ground with people who are so different than me and come from completely different areas of the world. It amazes me how we can all get along with each other despite our differences and disagreements. College is teaching me how to handle people of all sorts, and I believe that will be the most useful to me in my future.

Before I graduated high school, college was not on my mind. I had dreams of just being a superstar! However, with the guidance and help from the amazing staff at my high school, they are the reason why I'm here. While being in co llege, I have gained knowledge, skills, ability to adapt to the world and gained more responisbility in life. However, my college experience has given me a lot of opportunity in the work places and to meet people of different diversities. Being in college has helped me strengthen my self confidence as a young woman and has made me a better person in life. I really enjoy going to college and I'm going to contiune my education to the highest degree possible. College is making me be the best that I can be and pursuing me farther into having a good future. I am going to be the best that I can be!

My experiences during college will follow me throughout my life. “Enter to learn, go forth to serve” is a quote that can be found before entering campus here. I believe, while attending college, I have learned many of the necessities needed to actively serve in the community. I believe the diversity found here at Brigham Young University of Hawaii is unique and is what will drives students like myself to both serve one another and, use education to prevent war and finally sustain world peace.

Mary

To try your hardest no matter what you do, and you'll succeed!

I have learnt so much about my field of study in Finance. My college experience has indeed prepared me for my future empoyment endavors. Not only that, i have made many friends who are not of my nationality enabling me to be comfortable around other people.

I have been to a university way back home in the Philippines but the Brigham Young University-Hawaii is the best. Here I have friends from 70 different places in the world and we are all in one faith. We are able to learn about the Polynesian Culture very well and studying here is just a very wonderful privilage. These school have a very high standard, standard based on The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. This is indeed a very good international school,Asians, Polynesians, Americans, Africans are all here and each and everyone receives the same treatment. We have different cultures, beliefs and ways of life but Brigham Young University Hawaii unites the students from ALL OVER THE WORLD. We are all here to go forth and serve, we are one.

I have been attending Los Medanos College for a few years now. I initially started going part time to complete my prereq's needed to apply for the nursing program while still working. Since it is a community college, it is much cheaper than a university. Los Medanos is a great school. They have just finished building a new library and new math and science buildings, which all look beautiful. I have had a wonderful college experience here. All of my teachers have been great and really help you to learn. I am currently in the nursing program now with an expected graudation date of May 2012. I plan to go to a University after I graduate to get my Bachelors degree. I feel I have made the right decision going to a community college first. Going to college has been valuable because it will help me in the future to complete my dreams of becoming a registered nurse.

Caitlin

Attending college has been a very challenging yet rewarding experience. There were times when I was first starting out where I wondered if it was worth it. I am a full time student, and am also working about 35 hours a week. The balance of earning enough money to attend and going full time has been difficult. It was during these stressful times that I really grew as a person. I have managed to keep my grades high and benefit from my courses. School helps me to feel involved and gives my life more purpose. I feel more complete as a person and as a member of the community. While I still have a year or so to go, I can already see how much my character has developed from my hard work, dedication, and the sacrifices I have made to attend college. The conclusion I have come to is that Yes!, it is worth it. I would never give up the feeling of self worth and accomplishment that I have gained from my schooling. It is this feeling that has added to my desire to become a teacher and instill a love for learning in my own students.

Before college started, I thought I knew myself. I thought I found my identity after four years of a somewhat hectic emotional roller coaster. But after my first semester, I realized I didn't know myself as well as I thought. I had lost part of who I was somewhere in high school, and I never bothered to take it back until now. Brigham Young University-Hawai'i gave me the chance to find myself and be myself through the programs, events and student diversity it offers. It has also provided me with the opportunity to be more open about my religious beliefs and develop my relationship with God. Brigham Young University-Hawai'i helped me re-organize my life and realize my true identity and infinite value. I can confidently say I am a daughter of God, and I'm happy.

I feel grateful that i have the opportunity to study in BYUH. I have progresses mainly in academic and social areas. My school has a religion background and most of the teachers in my school are the members of a church. The teachers not just teach their students, they love their students. The careness I feel from them encourage me to work hard on my school works and be more serious in what i am learning. My school have many tutors in different academic areas. As a second language learner, i benefit a lots from my English tutors. They help me discovering my weaknesses and guiding me to keep improving. They help me build more confient to speak English with native speakers. My school have students come from all around the world. I learnt how to communicate with people in different cultural background. It really help me get used to work with different people in my future career. My school is not big and don't have many students. I have more chance to meet others and be a close friend with them. It is so valuable to attend my school because of the unique experience students can get here.

Cindy

My college experience so far has been rewarding in many ways. The relationships developed during this time are remarkably lasting ones. I met my husband at college and many other friendships grew from the time spent there. College life is amazing in the way it develops self-esteem. Succeeding socially and academically is such a fulfilling experience. The value of achieving an education is priceless; one cannot put a price tag on the personal value having a degree offers. It generates self-worth that penetrates into all areas of adult life. Confidence and success stem from it. The single most important thing a woman can do for herself is obtain it. Personal growth and a sense of independence begin here.

The value I’ve found in attending Brigham Young University of Hawaii is one of balancing my life and finding what’s most important. BYUH is laced with strong values and encourages learning everything you can while making priorities on what’s most important in life. I've learned how to build a strong family with honest values and morals. The education I've received here has shown me how to be successful in life, support and build a healthy family, give back to the community, and be a faithful husband and father. It's valuable to come to BYUH because you're able to study and focus, but also balance your life with recreation and enjoying the beauties all around. You learn that school isn’t everything, but it’s important. You learn it’s more important to be a good person then get good grades and it’s more valuable to build relationships then to step on people to the top. Those who come will feel a confidence and peace that their life is heading the right direction because they know they are becoming a better person, and not just getting better grades.

What I have gotten out of a college education is to be educated in the degree in which I am going for. I have learned what I did not know about the degree that I am getting myself into. It has been very valuable to attend college because of todays society you need a degree in a professional field and with out education it will be very hard to go fourth in life. I enjoy comin back to school and am goin to countinue my education because no matter how old you are it is still good to keep your mind refreshed and educated . I recommend people should continue there education and go forth in life because in the long run it will pay off.

Whitney

This has been a valuable experience because of the cultural diversity, the unity, and the atmosphere. This school is so small and so diverse that it allows people from all over te world to interact socially and academically. This fosters an appreciation and love for others that is unique to this campus. The diveristy also allows for learning and understanding of the world in a more global sense. The unity of this school is truly incredible. It might seem hard to be unified with such a diverse student body. but it really is not hard at all at this campus. All the students have a common tie that connects them and that is their religion. This allows everyone to get along so well and understand each others similarities. This also helps students not feel left out. This is a very including group of students. The atmosphere mad this a valuable experience since I was able to leanr and grow at at the right pace. This school does push you. but it is also laidback and relaxed. The school is alos fairly secluded and that helps the keep the students close and contribute to the community and atmosphere of the area.

maria

It has been a great experience and it still is, being a college student is haveing more liberty. That means that you have to make good chioces and get everything done. It has been a good experience to meet new people from diffrent backgrounds and making new friends. When you become a college student you have to learn how to become independent and responsible for your actions. There is no one by your side telling you whats right from wrong because you are on your own now. In college some profesors care and some dont if you have a bad grade some will help and some just dont care. There are all kind of people in college and its a diffrent atmosphere. It has been a great experience attending college i have had my bad days and good days but overall it has been great, and once i graduate it will be even better.

Sione

I have finally comes to know how important education is for my life. How it prepares me to get a better future. I have seen how real life is and how important self reliance is, and not relying on your parents and other to do everything for you. It is very important for me to attend in order to improve my talents and be more educated. When I accomplish this, I can help the government, the economy, the church and especially my family. It is also so valuabe for me to attend because I am from a very poor family and I have seen how hard it is get our needs in order to survive. There is nothing else I can do which will benefit us but to go to school, gain more education and then work.

Zoe

The atmosphere here is so amazing. I love the people and you can't find a group or community like this anywhere else in the world.

Janna

Utah Valley University has been valuable to attend because its classes are perfect for my interests and major. As an English major, I have fully dedicated myself to learning about how different aspects of English in general help me with having a solid career. The classes I have taken so far have helped me figure out the direction I want to go in life, and without these classes, I don't think it would be possible for to have this major at all. As for the rest of my college experience, I enjoy making friends to know different people throughout my major. I believe that meeting people within my major is useful because I know they can help me in future classes and I know that we have similar goals. I think it's a lot harder to have anything in common with someone who is not in your major to talk to. Utah Valley University has been my dream school for the past couple of years. This school shows that they truly care about their students' education and where they go in life. I know I made the right choice in going to Utah Valley University, I love it!

Jared

BYUH is an amazing school with amazing instructors. The fact that the campus is so small makes learning easier and being able to connect with professors because of this is amazing. The student body is about 2,500 everybody knowseverybody and we are all here to succeed we work hard together and accomplish college together is what makes BYUH what it is.

Sarah

Attending community college was a great decision. By going to a community college I was able to get many basic classes that I will need at a four year college completed at a lower cost and right near my home. My community college has great faculty that really want you to succeed and are truly interested in their students goals. As a part of the honors program, I have been challenged to do my best work as well as being able to work with amazing advisors to help me prepare for a four year college. Taking two years of my college experience to stay close to home was not only convenient and money saving, it also allowed me to hone in on where I wanted to take the rest of my education and gave me the background to do it.

Amy

At college, I walk into each class with the attitude of, "What will I learn today and how will I use this information?" In my opinion, this is the underlining reason students attend college. Everything I learn during college life is eventually applied to the world around me: from the introduction of new concepts, to expanding on previous ideas, to dispelling my own ignorance. All of this strengthens my ability to learn, absorb, and exercise all that I discover while at college. But, this is only a portion of what I've gained from my college experience. More importantly, I've discovered at college the reality of all that I do not know. But, college is the reminder of where that information lives and is available, should I choose to pursue it. And I do choose to pursue it. It is my willingness to learn because of the humility of my own ignorance, not despite it, that has made the opportunity to attend college so remarkably invaluable to me.

Bailey

College has been an interesting experience personally since I've chosen a school over thousand miles away from home. But it has taught me many important lessons. The first of these being independence. I'm in a new place with no inital friends or family to help me. I've had to grow up and become an adult by learning to provide for myself, make my own decisions, and become self-reliant. I find this to be valuable because it makes me capable of standing on my own two feet in other situations and will prepare me for when I leave school and enter into a career. The second lesson I've recieved is an appreciation and tolerance of others. Going to school here in Hawaii has offered many occasions to experience different cultures and ideas. This has definitely increased my understanding of other people and opened my mind to other's viewpoints and working with different people, realizing that my way is not the only way. Not only will this also help in a career, but has overall, made me a happier, more loving, better person.

Tyler

This university has really helped me to become the person that I want to be. Not only has it helped me to learn and develop as a student, but it has helped me to become a better leader in society, to beceome a person who truely cares about those around me and also to be motived and eager to make a difference in the future. Continuing my education here at Brigham Young University Hawaii has been the best decision that I have made in my life and I would not want to change or alter the experiences that I have had here for anything. The best thing is that I still have one more year left and I will just continue to build on the great experiences that I have had here and continue to grow and develop as a person.

Bethany

I am grateful every day that I am attending this university. I have been able to further my education on the beautiful island of Oahu and meet incredible people from every corner of the Earth. Through this college experience, I have truly been able to travel and see the world while staying in one place. Each day on the Brigham Young University - Hawaii campus, I meet a student from another country and I can see their culture and their country simply by getting to know each other. My eyes have been opened to the absolute richness of diversity and the beauty of a school that harbors it all. I value my opportunity to be at BYUH because I have the chance to be a student of not only this university but the world. It is truly humbling to be at a school where students have given up so much, simply for the chance to learn. My education is of value to me as I see its meaning to those around me. Education is an opportunity that opens doors to so much more and I look forward to the doors I will step through in my future because of this university.

Carolyn

My college experience has been extremely valuable in my development as a person. Not only have I gained valuable skills and knowledge in diverse subjects and interests, but I have most importantly learned how to learn. The general education requirements broaden my interests and understanding of topics that I didn't know I would have an interest in, such as biology, web design, and even fitness. I've developed the ability to manage a class load and work schedule. In coming here to BYU-Hawaii I have met many different people from different cultural backgrounds. This experience has been enlightening and uplifting as I've learned to cooperate with people with all different perspectives and ideas from myself.

Shaun

So far my college experience has been a learning one for me, because it is the first time I have moved away from home and have had to become independent of my parents. and I have found a job to help me pay for tuition. I have a roommate which has taught me how to become a team player and be self motivated to go to class and to get my assignments done. It has taught me how to manage my time wisely and to be a multi-tasker to be prudent with my money while still having fun and achieving my goals. I realize attending college is so valuable to my future because not only do I gain greater knowledge from the subjects I study and how it will help me to become who I want to be but it will also teach me some lessons of life that I perhaps took for grant it living at home. I have a hands on experience right now meeting people from all walks of life and interacting with them on a daily bases. I thinks it's important to learn from the ethnic groups attending the college to become well rounded.

Libby

I have learned how important it is to take college serious. In high school I was laid back and I felt that I could be laid back and still pass with an outstanding grade. In highschool this was true, but in college it is not. I learned that in college I have to be more focus because it is easier to fail a class in college than in highschool. College is all about how much the student as an individual actually wants the education. I pay for each class so I realized that I really need to get my money's worth. I am not in college simply to make friends because friends make me loose focus of my work, so I close them out when it is school time or time to do my work. In highschool I was able to chat as much as I pleased, but teachers are not going to always be there when you fail in college as they do in highschool.

Kimberly

I've finally learned what I want to do and have learned so much in college. I'm pursuing a social work degree and will be obtaining my masters degree so I can help treat patients and family members through the local hospice organization. This has become my passion in life. This is my second career and I'm so happy to have finally found what I love. Even if it takes me years to obtain my degree it will be well worth it. I feel my age will help me be more compassionate and understanding to those I help.

Lacey

One thing that I think is obvious that I have gotten out of Brigham Young University Hawaii is more intellectual knowledge and educational experiences. But Brigham Young University Hawaii also offers so much more than just intellect. Because of the high diversity rate I have been able to gain important cultural experiences and understanding, allowing me to interact better with the people I meet. There are many people here who have impacted my life and brought new insights and viewpoints through their cultural backgrounds into how I handle myself and live my life. Another element that I have received from attending BYU Hawaii is an opportunity to experience collegiate soccer and to learn things such as teamwork, dedication, hard work ethics, and determination. Also this school is based around the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, also known as Mormons, and has allowed and encouraged me to further my relationship with my savior and to develop myself morally. All of these different aspects have been shaping me so that I can thrive in my future and have a positive impact on the world.

Luis

My college experience so far has been the best experience I have had. I have discovered the possibility to educate myself to become a better person in life. The inumerable doors that education opens to an individual are just one part of this fantastic journey called college. I believe that every human being should educate themselves to their fullest extent, by doing this they will not only better themselves but they will also make the world a better place. I know I made the right decision by deciding to attend college and I encourage other individuals to do the same.

robert

What i have gotten out of my college expirence so far is that you have some instructors that will help and others that wont. Program advisors are of no help sometimes atleat in my expirence i have had no luck with them. My expirence has been valuable to me because not only do i know where i would like to attend i know what things to look for when chooseing the right college. I belive that when picking the right college you get other students opinions of the school and their experience as to help you undferstand what the administration and the professors are like at that specific college.

Michele

My College Experience is just begining at a community College but I have become educated on many different Educational / Career options and the process I am going to need to follow in order to reach my short tem and long term goals. As a recent graduate from Wyotech Medical Assisting Program, I was able to learn very basic clinical and administrative procedures in the medical field and earn the qulifications I needed in order to be employed as a Medical Assistant. Although the program was an accelerated program, and at times I felt somewhat overwhelmed, I enjoyed the fast pace learning. In concluion, both LBCC and Wyotech are classified as Colleges but my experience has been extremely different at each of these schools.
