Brigham Young University-Hawaii Top Questions

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Carlyn

Going to college has been a profound experience that has changed me in so many ways. I have had the opportunity to meet people from over 70 different countries and I have even been able to travel to the Philippines and Tonga to see how they live. Doing so, has given me a whole new perspective on life. It has made me grateful for what I have and has driven me to want to help others accomplish similar sustainability. I have learned to appreciate other cultures and their unique traditions. I have also developed a love for learning. With each class I take I gain a deeper understanding of how certain aspects of the world work. Some questions are answers and others are raised inspiring further learning to take place. College has opened my eyes to the amazing possibilities that surround me and given me the tools I need to take advantage of the opportunities that lay before me. Going to college is one of the best decisions I have made so far in my life, and I hope to be able to continue to build and expand upon this base of knowledge for the rest of my life.

I learn to be close to God and love whatever that is placed in my life. Classes are small and there are a lot of interactions among teachers and students. Only students who obey school rules can stay and study. The teachers link the academic studies to the gospel of Jesus Christ and I'm able to see the greatness of God that way. Student life is simple but wonderful. Many of us study, work, and take care of our young families. I can see how every one at school is striving to pursue their dreams so that their family can be blessed. I don't think there is another school that can offer students and teachers such comfortable environment in which they all share clear and right standards. This learning experience has helped me set higher goals in life than ever before.

As I have attended Brigham Young University Hawaii, I have learned several important things, such as educational knowledge, beauty of variety, and leadership principles. First, I have learned English efficiently from the expellant English teaching program of the school. Since there have been many international students from the establishment of this school, for several decades, school has tried many ways of efficient English teaching skills. In addition, I had an opportunity to learn the leadership principle. Since 2009 spring term, I have served as a Korean Club president. There are about 125 members in our club, and I tried to share Korean culture by preparing several cultural activities. In the process of serving as a club president, I learned how to work with others and how to motivate people to have positive thinking in doing club activities and to be a good student. I realize that working with others is very difficult; but it is extremely valuable. Finally, by being in the various cultural people, I realize that there are many wonderful cultures in the world and the different cultures make the world more wonderful. I indeed have felt joy and happiness from learning different cultures.

I worked for many years in the field of developmentally disabled services and discovered along the way that I have an affinity for social services. Entering a local community college a couple of years ago was a daunting, frightening proposition, as it required a pay decrease and a new community of academia to acclimate myself to. I have been successful in facing this task and, in the Fall of 2010 I will have achieved two goals: receiving my Associates College of the Redwoods, and attending the Bachelor?s in Social Work program at Humboldt State University. I will also be, for the first time in my life, a student only, rather than a working student. I intend to focus explicitly on attending college, the better to involve myself within the Humboldt County community. My end goal is a Master?s Degree in Social Work, which will allow me to work for a variety of programs and to eventually make the sort of policy decisions that affect the multiplicity of people in my community who require social services. Education has and will allow me to enrich the lives of the people in my community; my small way of changing the world.

Michael

I have learned to love everyone. Everyone around is also trying to achieve success. We all need to work together as a team, and by doing so we can achieve greater results. That is why we need to love or at least respect one another. In this small school everyone knows each other, and so we have learned to help one another. I have also learned to be disciplined. It is easy once you have made friends to become distracted with friends and activities going on around you. We need to remain focused on our goals to succeed and enter into our fields. I feel that having these two things will help us when we enter into the real world and into our careers. We will have to respect and love those that we work with to be able to succeed. We will also need to have the skill to remain focused in the workplace.

Most important part of my college attendance is I have found a way to survive into the real world. Before I come to this college it was kind of scary living without financial safety and now I am building my financial safety in this school. Second part I have learned many skills, such as teaching experinces, computer skills, and communication skills.

Elizabeth

Leadership is practiced not so much in words as in attitude and in actions - Harold Geneen. At BYUH I have learned how to be a good leader - a leader with integrity. In every class I have taken; in every club meeting; in every school devotional we are taught how to be a leader, how we can go forth and serve. Leaders have the resposibility to serve all those in their charge, which requires they be well educated, informed, and charitable.

Abigail

I've learned how to learn, how to cope with anything that can come my way in life, and gained the confidence to succeed and not give up at whatever I put my mind to.

Kayli

I have learned so much by coming to college. Not only have I grown academically, but my pespective on life has changed. I see things from a different point of view because of my many interactions with other students. I have come to know myself better and how to make confident decisions that will help me to become a better person and influence society for the better. My classes and situations I have been put in have taught me how to manage new problems and find solutions. I feel more knowledgable each day in school and I am doing my best to get good grades. I believe I have been very successful and I will continue to be successful in college.

Allison

Many people think of college as a time to escape and live on your own without constant supervision, but in reality living on your own involves so much more responsibility than ever before. While I have learned to be away from my family, I have learned the value of accountability. In order to succeed you must learn about who you really are and what it really takes to thrive. The only things worth while to do are the things that help you build good character and relationships with others. These are the kind of life lessons that I learn outside the classroom, and these are also the important things that will be apart of me for the rest of my life. But to gain these kinds of insights, one must be put to the test. College classes are not just easy A classes meant to go to and doodle on your paper the whole time. Going to class is important, and the harder you work at your education, the more well rounded and valuable you become as a person.

Jessica

The college years have been everything that brought my world to a standstill and switched my perspective around. It was only some five to six years ago that I would say that I was the kind of individual who thought that the world had nothing to offer for me or others, but it was precisely the college opportunity that brought me to be able to visualize and become open-minded. Normally, people would say that college is a place for many pitfalls; from what I know, it depends on the individual, for I have realized that it is only when a person decides to look for something and refuses to give up on the process of understanding the self that they will find what they need to walk through life with dignity. Life is full of risk and opportunity alike, and the difficulty of the process is precisely what makes the painful process worth the while. It is precisely due to the college that I began to understand myself and my world in a more positive way and that I found what a valuable thing that education can be. For this, I wouldn't trade my college years for anything.

My college experience has helped me discover whom I am and what I want to contribute to the world. The classes I take continually challenge me. The most valuable thing that I have learned in college is my ability to overcome. My goal is to go to medical school to become a surgeon. Being a woman I am going against my ?role? in society. My experience has taught me that I can do anything that I set my mind to, and am willing to work and sacrifice for. Women can do anything, and that is what I?m trying to show the world, and my sisters. Stand up and be who you really dream of, the only thing stopping you is yourself.

Ariana

I have found myself. My college experience has given me academic and moral fiber. I have tested my limits at balancing a part time job, full time school, and religious callings. I have learned to become a leader among my peers, so that they have someone to lean on. I have discovered the true meaning of learning and will beable to apply to all my future education. My work ethic has been molded to get the job done right the first time beacuse anything that is worth my time is worth doing good. I've learned to ask for help, and to be a better help. Most importantly Ive found my passion. My passion and motivation for everything that I do. My passion to learn; to help; to serve others; and to be a better person one day at a time, week by week, month by month. In hopes that one day I'll be able to make a difference in just one persons life. That is what I have learned. To be the best me.

Rose

My education has not followed traditional paths. I have attended public schools, private schools, and been home-schooled. I earned my GED in 1997 and worked for eleven years before deciding to attend college. My experience in working has given me a greater appreciation of my opportunities than I would have had if I had started college immediately after High School. I also have gained clarity for my life and career goals. I am a better student, excited to learn, and succeed. While at Clackamas Community College I re-discovered my love of American Sign Language and Deaf Culture. Both are diverse and expressive. I am more expressive when I sign, more the person I want to be. This realization has given me the direction for my schooling and my career goals. My goal is to work in the Deaf Community as an advocate, counselor, or teacher. I have been accepted into Western Oregon University and will be starting in the fall, to major in Deaf Studies.

This particular institution is much like a refiner?s fire. Students enter as ordinary, yet as a result of love, high expectations, and desire the graduating students are precious and rare as diamonds. Being a student of Brigham Young University Hawaii is preparing students for a lifetime of learning and service. Not only has this University planted a desire in me to do better as well as excel in all avenues of life, but to take responsibility of the friends and fellow classmates that surround me. I?ve come to comprehend more about myself personally and with the accompaniment of caring staff and faculty I know that these outstanding experiences will properly arrange each student to make a difference for good in the world and help the generations to come. Our standards are some of the highest in the United States and only a select few are able to fully live to these expectations. Attending this school is a heaven on earth where we as a community focus on becoming better, while gaining an excellent academic experience.

Katie

When I entered college I really thought I already knew who I was and what I wanted out of life, but just like many other college students, I learned a lot about myself just within the first few months on my college campus. I made new friends and had to live on my own, and make my own decisions. BYU Hawaii is small, but it's full of amazing people. The way you are constantly surrounded by so many cultures expands your mind in so many ways. In November of 2009 my best friend commited suicide and I was in Hawaii, no where near home. But the way everyone from every culture, my teachers, my administration, the way they supported me and helped me through that hard time showed how amazing and powerful the joy in that school is. It's taught me to serve and live peacefully among those around me, even when we don't understand their culture or their background. I wouldn't trade the diversity and experiences I've had at BYUH for the world.

Benjamin

This school has given me an outstanding and professional experience. This is a school that is different from any other school. This is a school of high standard. We live by the honor code, which is a very similar standard of a christen living. For example, any sexual conduct with opposit sex will result in termination of school. Dress and grooming standard also restrict student from wearing non- modest clothing, but turn to professional wearing. Students here enjoy a place of peaceful and safty, which allow them forcus on study.

Carriw

So far I have gotten many things out of my experince. I have an understanding of my education and my goal in life. I want to further my education to better my life and my childrens lives. My experince has been a good one and to be able to follow my dreams and get a degree will help me succeed in life and I will be able to support my self and others I love. My experince will help me use skills in my everyday life.

Leilani

I have gotten a wonderful education by dedicated teachers interested in my success. I have enjoyed my internship I was able to be a part of with Disney, and love the school and the friendliness and warmth of the campus and the people (not to mention the weather). I have enjoyed the skills I have learnt from my on campus jobs and from the teachers in the Hospitaltiy Tourism, Arts, and Entrepreneurial courses taken. They also have a great variety of extracurricular activities. I have been wanting to go to school here since I was a child and lived in the area, before moving away and I am glad to be able to make that dream come true, as well as many more dreams because of my schooling here.

Daniel

From my experience here at Brigham Young University Hawaii I have gained all the "standard" benefits of the college experience. I have received a good education, counsel for the future, friendship, networking, and even a wife. However, the most valuable thing that I have gained from my college experience, besides my wife, is a better perspective of what this world can be. Here at BYUH we have an extremely culturally diverse student body. I have made friends from literally all over the world. I have been able to overcome any and all stereotypes that I adopted growing up. I have seen firsthand the need for different cultures and different perspectives when finding a solution to a problem. I have learned how to accept the similarities in all people and to respect our differences. I am studying to become a high school biology teacher and although the lessons I have learned and will learn from textbooks and proffessors are important for my future career, the most helpful lesson that I have learned is that everybody, no matter their background, has the potential to be great. As a teacher and a human being I must always remember that lesson above all else.

Rachel

I just started attending college this semester but already I have learned so much about my major (Web Technology). I learned a completely different way to design websites, which is so much better than the other way I knew. It has been valuable for me to attend college because I'm learning skills that I can use later in life for fun or for a business opportunity.

Melonie

I have gotten what I think you are suppose to our of my college expericence so far. I have learned about different cultures, made friends for life and also gained a knowledge in my desired feild to one day become a teacher.

Sierra

I have learned how to manage my time better than I did when I was in high school. Being in college has also exposed me to other cultures and other people's ways of life. It's given me a chane to try out things I wouldn't get to do otherwise. It's allowed me to come out of my shell and make new friends of varying backrounds, experiences, and majors. They really come in handy when I need help on school work. So far it's been a really fun experience. I love learning about other people. I love going to my classes because every teacher has a different teaching experience that makes it fun to go to class everyday. At this rate, I'll reach my goal of becoming a fashion designer in no time. I just hope other people do the same and take their time in college to embrace life and try new things.

Michelle

I have learned so much from this university. I have learned how to work with others who are different from myself. I have been involved in a very rigorous biology program. We learned to plan out a experiment, write a paper and try to get it published in a well-known biological journal. It has been valuable to attend because it has given me the practical and real-world experience needed to have a successful career after graduation. I have had the opportunity to work at a hospital and have been able to apply everything that I learn in the classroom. This has helped me get excited about going to class and learning those things so that I can go and help actually people with medical needs. This school has given me all the tools I need to have a successful life.

JOSEPH

i do not have any college education but i plan to be the first in my family to achive that goal.

Danielle

I have learned so much not only about education, my field of study, but about myself. I have learned how to care for myself, and for those around me. I have learned to manage my money, keep a clean apartment, and cook real meals. I have learned a lot about living with others and how much patience it takes. I have learned to be an independent person.

Marisha

Before my college career although I was diligent in my school work and leadership roles, I was unsure about myself, who I am and what is important to me in my life. I am now a sophmore in college and through my higher learning experiences I have grown up a lot. I know who I am, I love myself and what makes me who I am. I have learned through past experiences, I maximize my life and live in the moment, as well as taking steps forward to my great goals for the future. I know the best way for me to learn, study and accomplish many things. I know how to manage my time and priorities while continually loving my life and gaining immeasurable life experiences by living independently in Hawaii and being taught by the love and diversity around me. I am excited to pursue the goals for my future and continue to attain as much life experience as I can.

Oganes

So many cultures in the school, such a variety of experiences you can have living in Hawaii, and my ability to learn English has increased so much to be able to use it in a native setting.

Tiffany

i have enjoyed the students who have the same standard as i and the spiritual uplifting on every Tuesday for the Devotional. All the experience, it has been valuable to me and throughtout my life.

Skills For My Entire Life! This expresses what I have gotten out of my college experience, in a nutshell. It has been valuable to me, a teen-student-mother of 2, even beyond the privileged and honorable opportunity to receive an education, to be simultaneously developing and strengthening the skills that will assist me in the endeavors I that I will encounter throughout my life. From the very start of Enrollment to the end of each term's Finals, I realized the importance of being Organized and Punctual. Being organized and punctual, made all the difference when it came to attending important campus meetings and orientations, attending class regularly, and submitting timely assignments. Dedication and Endurance were necessary to stay on track, strive for the "highest" scores with "every" assignment and/or exam, and know that there is a bright light at the end of the academic tunnel. Because of the skills that I developed in college, I will accomplish this milestone and many more to come!

MATTHEW

I have to admit, I was a little nervous as to what to expect starting college. It didn't take long for things to fall into place. I have learned that English is not my best subject, Architecture is alot more involved than I ever realized, but I have really learned a lot about people in my Psychology class. The biggest thing I feel I have learned so far in my new college adventure, is to be more responsible for myself. I know as a college student, there are no notes sent home to Mom & Dad, there are no report cards. Everything falls into my lap, I am totally responsible for all my actions. The teachers are there to teach and if I choose to unplug, well, that's all my problem. In other words, I think college is the first big step in a teenager's life to becoming a responsible adult. Don't get me wrong, I've learned things as far as my classes, but I'm only in my 3 semester, so I've got a long way to go as far as the educational process, but the life lesson has surely began to register.

Andrea

Starting college a year after I graduated high school helped me realized all the oportunities I missed. College builds a network of connections to become aware of the options to prepare for life and school. It builds relationships with teachers in order to have a better understanding of what choices to make for an education. College forces to make friends who share the same aspirations as in order to have a support system to help each other. Now that I am attending college, I feel more inspired by all the choices I can take advantage of and become aware of the world. College inspires me to look forward in studying abroad in other countries while making a difference in my community and in my family. I plan to explore different lifestyles and customs all around the world because I want my perspective of life to grow. I want to discover how I can make a difference and inspire others by following their high expectations by attending college. I also want to show how college can improve not just how one evaluate ideas and come to educated conclusions, but also have a better life regardless of where one begins.

At the Houston Community College dual credit courses offered at Houston ISD High Schools I am able to take classes which are more challenging than those that the school or states own circulum requires and most colleges in and out of the state will accept my credits in classes such as English, Government, and Economics for college credit to knock out some of my common ciriculum classes. Since I am taking these classes while in High School I do not have to pay for Houston Community College fees which are covered by the school/school district and we are only required to purchase our text books for that class unless you are on free or reduced lunch in which case the school will cover the fees for your text book.

Joseph

I have been attending school at Cosumnes River College since the spring of 2007. During this time I have been taking all of my major courses which include a variety of construction classes. I am one semester away from earning an A.S. in Construction Management and an A.S. in Construction. During my first semester, in which I completed the construction pre-apprenticeship class, I had to do volunteer work as part of the course requirements. All of my volunteer work was for the Habitat For Humanity and included a variety of jobs for me to do. The volunteer work was performed on homes for needing family's in and around Sacramento. College has really turned my life around and in fact I will be only the second person to graduate from college in my entire family. This experience has been great for me and after I complete both degrees I plan on going into the electrical field of construction. So far I have earned plenty of certificates for construction in which I can use on my resume. Once these degrees are on my resume I should have no problem in entering into an electrical company.

Seini

Being in college provided me with resources that helped me to understand what fields I could be good in and allowed me to develop skills that would help me progress in that particular field. I've also been able to develop and strengthen relationships between peers and professors that have made me a better person and contributor of my community. College allows a person to grow more in life and profession.

Jordyn

While trudging through my grueling high-school years, I repeatedly heard the statement, "I can't wait to get out of here and go to college!" For many, this statement reflects the desire for freedom, for change, for being on one's own. I looked forward to advancing my education, learning knew things, and focusing on the carreer that lay ahead of me. Eventually, graduation came with its tears of sadness and joy. Summer passed in a blur of carefree days and sleepless nights. And, finally, the first day as College Freshmen began. While I always anticipated the freedome to choose exactly what I wanted to learn and the freedom to make my own choices, I never once anticipated my freedom to grow. Looking back at my life before college makes me realize just how far I have come through various trials and tribulations that had once seemed insurmountable. I see the girl I left behind and the woman I have and will become. I see a newfound strength within me that I never anticipated to find. I see how the freedom of higher education has molded me into the person I am today.

My most valuable experience of being a college student is the ability to catch many opportunities that are waiting for me. It is my first time being away from home and family, and I have learned to socialize and deal with many problems on my own. I love college life and am grateful for the opportunity to attend this wonderful campus. Thank you!

Megan

The most important thing I have learned from my college experience is that hard work pays off. In high school, the teachers really let me slide by and never really required much from their students. When I got to college I thought it would be the same way. I was wrong! My first attempt at college ended very quickly when I failed out and had to withdrawl. I took a semester off and really decided what I wanted to do with my life. I realized that it is hard to find work without a college degree and that was when I decided to go back to school. From there I enrolled at a community college and took things much more seriously. I am always on top of my work and getting extra help before classes and currently have a 3.6 GPA. If you want to succeed, you need a degree and getting a degree is hard work but in the end, it will definitely pay off.

My college experience has taught me the power of family, friends, dedication, hard work, and integrity (just to name a few). I am living on my own for the first time in my life, keeping a job to pay for my school and supporting myself. I have received a crash course in life without family and the pain of being alone. I know that although I have always loved to travel, life is not worth living if there are not loving people to spend it with. I have learned about the dedication needed to finish through and get good grades. I have learned that hard work pays off, and no one can change the effect it can have if you incorporate it into your life. I have learned a lot about honesty and integrity. Integrity is who you are when you have a final and the student next to you has their answers in plain view. It is about what you do with a misplaced answer key and how you respond to an interview question you do not know the answer to. As Abigal Adams once stated, "It is not in the calm of life that great [people] are made."

Leslie

Out of my college experience, I have gotten so many things I wouldn't have gotten anywhere else. I have learned to be confident in all that I do. I have also learned what it means to be a part of something bigger than myself. There are things beyond my own little world and they are just waiting for me to discover them, but they won't come to me. I have to go to them. I have learned to go with my gut instinct and to stop doubting my decisions. The most valuable thing I have learned since beginning college is that everyone is different and we have to respect that about each other. I have my own beliefs and ideas, but so does everyone else. That is what makes us the people that we are. It is that knowledge that has helped to lead me into the psychology profession and made me want to learn more. My teachers are very helpful by making us have open discussions. During these, I learn all of the different thoughts that make each of us individuals. It makes me think about my own actions and beliefs.

Amy

I've learned that I need to figure out what I want to do with my life and that It's not worth paying for an education when I have no goal for that education. I've seen too many individuals pay for degrees that they never use. I want to be going to school for the right reason and not just because everyone else is doing it. I feel like we're forced to make these decisions too soon and that the pressure to attend college should only be for those who know what they want out of it. Too many people believe that if they don't go right after high school then they never will, but that's completely realistic because we're all still so young. I'm still struggling to decide what I want but I've realized that I'm going to have to get some experience and knowledge before I can know what's the right career for me. I hope I can figure these things out.

Nathan

I have realized how much there is to learn and how useful and interesting it can all be. As I finish my General Education courses and move onto my major classes, there is great anxiety to not only get good grades, but to really learn the material and know how to apply it in my career as well as my personal life. I take out of my classes things that have really made me think and reevaluate myself and my goals in a very positive way. Specifically my Cultural and Developmental classes have taught me things that will influence who I am as a father, husband and citizen. I'm going to be doing some statistical and psychological research this summer with one of my professors and I've been surprised how exciting it is all becoming and how motivated I am to continue on and work even harder. I'm grateful for my chance to attend Brigham Young University - Hawaii. I really feel like my education and this institution are leading me down the path that I always wanted. The path I was meant to walk. I believe that is the true value of my "college experience".

Darwin

My college experience has been excellent. It has been a great experience for me by meeting different people and understanding how the real world is like. Life can be hard but if u work hard at what you're doing than you will achieve great accomplishments in life. Learning how to do stuff on you're own and not being babied by you're teachers is a major difference from high school. It's great to learn how to do different task on you're own and really be independent because in life you need to learn to do everything on you're own. It's been valuable to attend college for the reason that college is the most important part of life without college life will be difficult and you will encounter many hardships, so i believe that it has been valuable to attend college and realize that you need college in you're life.

Brigham Young University Hawaii (BYUH) has three great things worths every one to come for studying. First, Aloha spirit. Second, Integrity. Third, Opportunity. In BYUH, students are from more than twenty-six countries. It is the best place to learn different cultures and languages. For example, culture night is hosted every year in winter semester. Not only Aloha spirit, but also Integrity. A church school emphasis integrity on academic and personal attribute. Honor Code department is set for the purposes. Furthermore, leadership opportunities are provided by school's organization as Brigham Young University Hawaii Student Assiociation. BYUHSA recuits members to join their planned activities and events. Everyone is a leader on their part of jobs. Next, Job opportunities around the campus is to raise the capacity of students' ability, and help students reduce their finacial burdens. Finally, the new language as Japanese I learned, Korean loves eating KimChee in every day meals that I knew, honest on my academic study and living standard that I keep, chance to attend student body conference at Maui with different Universities that I experienced, gain skills to hold an acitivity and interact different countries people are all can find from Brigham Young University Hawaii.

First experiences aren?t always good. Attending a community college that doesn't have a good reputation doesn't help either. However, El Camino College isn?t like every other community college. I've seen this school gradually grow every year. I began attending El Camino about one year ago and even though it looked intimidated at first, I was able to learn and get used to the school. The students there are friendly and good people and the professors are tough, but helpful. The staff and professors offer their help to students that need assistance. The school offers student services for students who require help. Aside from the services I've enjoyed my experiences at El Camino College. I thought it would be difficult returning to school after my military experience. El Camino's student and veteran services has opened their arms for me. Their help is something I appreciate and value. They helped my transition into civilian life. El Camino has opened my eyes into the world of education again. It is an eerie and scary feeling starting school, especially after four years of absence. El Camino helped me overcome that fear and enjoy school all over again.

Rachael

My school has given me a full and rich experience. Brigham Young University is full of people intent on helping me learn academically, socially, and spiritually. My horizons have been opened wide and I wouldn't trade my time here for anything. All of my professors have been really professional and know their stuff. I feel really blessed when I go to my classes and realize that my teachers are so full of knowlege that they want to share with us. The class sizes are small, so we get one-on-one time with the professors and students. People on this campus get to know each other and it creates a unified feeling. Students and administrators and professors acknowledge each other out and about. The community is tight-knit. It's not hard to meet people through volunteering, activities, sports events ect. Some of the people I met on my first couple of days here are still my good friends. It's almost impossible not to make friends here, unlike some of the other schools I've visited on the island and on the mainland. All of these elements have provided me with a life-changing experience.

Jessica

What I've learned while being in college is that its not as easy at it seems. When I was in high school I wasn't worried about the cost of college. I thought paying for it would be simple. In reality paying for college has not been easy to pay for at all. Coming from a family who doesn't get financial aid and is paying for two kids to go to college has been one of the biggest struggles our family has ever gone through. Although its so difficult to pay for I know I must go. Life without a college degree is so difficult. I work two part time jobs and I know I would never be able to make a living with those paychecks. Getting a degree is what will help me make a life for myself. No matter how difficult classes or paying for it getting that diploma will make it all worth it.

During the time that I have spent in college I have learned the importance of education, how fortunate I am to have the chance to further that education and lessons that I would like to teach my own children. Firstly, I see and understand that education is truly one of the most important assets that any woman can have in her arsenal. It allows you have a head up in the world that you normally would not. I also see how lucky I am to get a higher education. Woman in many parts of the world do not get that chance and I am very blessed to be given the opportunity to better myself and the world around me. Finally, I have grown wiser during my college experience thus far. I see the mistakes I made and have grown wiser from them. I want to share my wisdom with my son later in life, when he starts his college life. I want to let him know that it may be hard at times but no one can say they were better off with less of an education. College gives you more than a degree, you get am education in life.

My college experience thus far has consisted of learning experiences that have not only had great impact on my academic life, but also on refining me as a person, strengthening my focus and my interactions with other people. The teachers have worked so hard in helping me reach my full academic potential, and I am just beginning to realise the many opportunities that I have in working towards my degree and later graduate school. Without the constant support system that they provide for me, it would have been hard to complete well the coarse load that I have had so far. I have also learned so much from the international student body that I associate with everyday. There are people here that come from places where they had nothing, and their motivation in their studies and in making this campus a better place to live is inspiring. The unique opportunity I have had to interact with people different from me in culture, beliefs and even language has been valuable as it has taught me to build strong, positive relationships with others despite what kind of barriers we face This is something I believe will help me my entire life.
