Brigham Young University-Provo Top Questions

What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

Brinai

There are high expectations and that can be overwhelming at times, but this is a prestigous school and those expectations are often what makes being here so great, also. Without them, BYU wouldn't be the incredible school that it is.

elyssa

sometimes people are judgmental. get over it and don't do the same.

Katherine

Censorship. Too often, because of the conservative nature of the community surrounding BYU, we are unable to explore or express issues that might be contreversial, but absolutely timely. Our newspaper suffers, our work suffers, and our fine arts suffer. That being said, the box allows us to stretch our creative capabilities within the boundaires, making us highly resourceful if we are willing to stretch.

Cortney

There is not a lot of on campus housing. Plus most of it is used for freshmen. All the rest of the housing around campus is a little further then in prefered. The campus is on a hill, so all the off-campus housing is below it requiring somewhat of a walk. This is fine during the warmer days, but during the winter it is not ideal.

Briana

The fact that its almost 100{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} mormon. No one else seems to realize there are other religions

Sally

The worst thing about BYU is the people. They are all the same ie. white, Mormon and boring.

Patricia

I think the worst thing about my school is the availability of scholarships. There are academic, music, and sport scholarships, but for the academic scholarships you have to keep at least a 3.8 or .9 GPA. That is next to impossible to do here. There are no scholarships that average people can get and it is very difficult to pay for college.

Ellen

i wish there was more diversity. We do have international students but culturally most of the students fit into the same ethinic group

Zarah

The course work is very challenging. It stretches the mind and demands excellence and mastery of each topic studied.

Brice

It's in Utah.

Scott

The size. There are so many here it is often very difficult to get into certain programs.

Katie

There is a very high stress level because students feel determined to excel and do their very best.

Garrett

The worst thing about BYU is that the majority of the school is extremly close minded and it is not diverse enough.

Sarah

I feel that there is not enough diversity at this school, which leads to a significant number of individuals not having the opportunity to learn how to interact with people of other cultures. Many at this school come from white, middle- or upper-class areas and have no experience with people from cultures other than their own.

Asenath

It's a big school so it's easy to get lost. If you're not amazingly good at something, you don't have the opportunity to try and become better because you are pushed aside by those who are already good. You don't get to try a variety of things, which is limiting to an overall education.

Chris

The policies within the individual colleges on campus (especially the one I am part of) change so frequently. From one semester to the next the way things are done are completely different. It is hard to keep up.

Daniel

There really isn't anything that comes to mind when I try and think of negative things. The one main thing that bothers me is that the Honor Code is enforced in parts. While guys who don't shave will get turned away from the testing center, girls wearing immodest clothing don't get a word said to them even though that is part of the Honor Code as well.

Katie

There is not an equal amount of girls and guys. It makes dating life a pain sometimes but it's not a huge issue. I wish the guys would ask girls out more and be more creative when it comes to social activities but overall the social life is pretty good.

Candace

The size. Because the tuition is so cheap I think the school struggles to provide an adequate number of teachers in relation to the overwhelmingly large student body. I also think that the number of students takes a toll on the professors and causes them to resent their work load and therefore the students to some extent. It also causes the accurate grading of student work to suffer.

Steve

The close-mindness of the culture. Most people are very conservative and if you voice different views and opinions you often are looked down on.

Denis

The traffic and parking is pretty much horrible

Mikaela

The worst thing about my school. Hm. Well, I could say location? Snow, snow, snow. October to April. But actually, that is not so bad and rather fun to play in! And the snow in April? Some people like to snowboard... alot. Maybe the large class sizes? Yeah, but for all of those late night study sessions, sometimes you need to just disappear in a 400 person auditorium. Nap time. No caffeine sold on campus? Bring your own. I heard that pop cans can fit into a backpack. A small purse even! Ok, it's the MORMONS! Just joking. [smile]

Kristin

BYU is a school of Fun Nazis. It's illegal to have fun here and in the surrounding city of Provo. We all have to sign away our fun-seeking-souls (not to mention our social lives) in order to be admitted to this school. In addition to not being able to do use social lubricants (alcohol, drugs, and sometimes caffeine), we can't throw parties with more than 20 people without permission from the city, we can't throw snow balls (Heaven forbid someone might get hurt!), and it's even illegal to climb a tree!

Tim

I think it's dumb that they require us to have insurance and that they charge us for the student health plan. The coverage on the student plan is inadequate and expensive.
