What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

If I could go back in time I would tell myself to stay focus on school. Once your not living with your mother any more and your paying things on your own it gets rough. Without a degree in this society you will have to settle for a low paying job with no room for growth in the company to better yourself. You might not be able to afford medical insurance or dental care to come out your check each pay period. If you have children how will you be able to pay for school for them so they don't end up like you in a low paying job. These jobs could careless about you and your personal life and without making enough pay how are you to save for tomrrow to cushion yourself in case anything goes wrong. It will be days you go to work hungry cause you cant afford lunch for yourself maybe you focused on your children eating over yourself. Sometimes you have to work hard to get where you need to be and right now going to class getting good grades is key to where your life is headed. Phill school is very important.

My name is Tracey A. Taylor and I am applying for the Cappex Scholarship. Presently, I am a senior working towards a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration . Despite being a full time student, maintaining a 3.538 GPA, I also take the initiative to enhance my education outside the classroom. I constantly strive for excellence and am committed to making my time as an undergraduate as productive and beneficial as possible. Attending college later on in life has given me a sence of liberation allowed me to not only explore a wider array of subjects, including women, social and human studies, but also explore myself. After taking time out to raise two children with my partner I now am focusing all of my attention on my educational goals. Behind my achievements is a strong desire to learn. I hope to complete my Bachelor’s degree this year and attend graduate school so I can one day return the favor many professors bestowed on me and teach at a college level. Education has taught me to evaluate life and my experience. My best advise for my high school self "STAY IN SCHOOL"Tracey A. Taylor

If I could go back in time I would talk to myself about the importance of continuing education. College is not easy and in fact it's a whole lot harder than high school. By taking college courses you can have an education in something that you actually want to do in life on a daily basis. I wish I would have taken that advice because I would be done with my degree by now!

Cindi

The best advice I could give myself is to sieze every opportunity to learn. Every opportunnity that arises can be looked at as a chance to further your education. Waiting 25 years to begin pursuing your degree will be a struggle. Aquiring your degree while running a business and supporting three children is not an easy task. Working toward a degree is a challenge with excellent rewards and my life experiences have been the best resource I could possible have in excelling in my classwork. When you begin working toward that business degree, never forget to involve your children. Be a role model to them so they will see that hard work has its rewards and no matter how much work it takes to further your education, it is always worth the effort. They will see that if you can achieve your dream of a BS Degree while single handedly raising a family then they can do it too.

My life and career has taken many amazing and twisting turns since first graduating from high school. Now that I am returning to college to finish my pursuit of higher education, I look back on my high school years without many regrets (since I wouldn't be the person that I am today without the experiences I've gained). If I could travel back in time to speak to my previous self, I would be sure to tell him how easy it was to beat his social anxiety. All those years being fearful of speaking up, speaking out, as well as never being outgoing because of the fear of what others might think was not only a complete waste of time, but in the end, took little more than a month or two of forcing myself to do the opposite of what I once would in order to beat it. I'm happier for it, and it would have been a very valuable tool for those years after high school when it affected me the most.

First point would be adapting. Life at home is different than life at college. It’s easy to feel lost in sea of strangers. You will need to learn to adapt to these settings as you’re going to run into them later in life. There will be culture shock as you adapt. Take comfort in the fact that everyone goes through this phase. Make new friends and try to make the best of it. Learning is important. There’s a lot more to learn than just what’s taught at college. IT has many certifications that offer a more refined knowledge of the subject. Employers look for this and your desire to learn will show in your experience. Put together a schedule and stick to it for active learning in and out of college. Define daily free time and take the time off between quarters. Or else you will get burnt out.

I am 31 and just returning to school to finish what I began almost 10 years ago! I only have a few courses left and then I will graduate.

I have gotten a lot of personal attention via my advisors at Capella. I have found everyone to be extremely helpful, and genuinely want me to succeed. I am a working adult and Capella offers me an oppurtunity to pursue my aspirations while working. The online learning envoronment is very easy to navigate. Capella has many resources available to help me succeed. I look forward to my classwork, and find the work to be applicable to my life.

Out of everything that I have gotten out of my college experience, I value the opportunity I got to learn and improve myself to become a decent human being in the society. Education has given me the descipline I needed, and the will to go forward and achieve my dreams. I value the logical thinking skills I gained thanks my college education and the interaction with my college students. Even though it was a hectic environment, the guidance from the faculty and the encouragement from my fellow students definitely enriched my college experience.

Joseph

My current college experience has served to fortify my abilities to complete projects on time and in such a manner that it reflects favorably upon my responsible fortitude. It has allowed me to set my goals higher than I had before beginning the college experience. I expect this self discipline to benefit me greatly as I apply for occupational posits within my selected fields. With maintaining my 4.0 average, I tell my potential employer, “here I am, watch what I can do for you”.

Mikyhla

I have learned how to properly and efficiently research information. I have also learned how to value others' opinions and learn from them. Being successful and knowing I can do it is another valuable thing I have taken from my college experience and will hold onto forever.

My learning experience with online college was different from my community college . I use attend community college as soon as I was finish with high school. Online college I attend June 2010 to start back college again. I learn that college is easy if you make it easy for yourself. I started community college in 2006 of September to further my education. When I begin college I was not attending as much and never put in my all, I thought that it would be easy. I learn that friends and that attend the same college as you or people you just met will keep you unfocused. When your in college you must meet the right friends to help you progress. I pick friends that will be relaxes about education. When I left I had no credit, because I was fooling around, I was I little scare to start online, but online college kept me focus and working at my own pace and stay away from all the distraction. I have three books to go to graduate. College is a experience that help me learn from all my mistakes; I excited to have my college Associated degree to graduate.

Back in my sophomore year of high school, college seemed like a distant adventure. It did not seem like it would teach me more than I was already learning, would just receive a different diploma at the end. When I first started college, I was thrown into a whirlwind. No parents, no one checking up on me, looming deadlines, huge classrooms, mountians of textbooks, and freedom. Then came the slamming reality of the need for money. Money for rent, utilities, textbooks, school fees, parking fees, gas, and the list goes on. I let the weight of it pressure me into taking a break from school. Trying to start again has been hard. My income was cut by half right after I left school and I got pregnant. Now I have a beautiful baby girl. Going through the emotions of the impending birth, the responsibility of raising a human being, and dreaming about what I want our life to be like in 20/30/40 years. I knew I had to get back into school to achieve any of my dreams for us. Life and school have taught me to become a strong, intelligent women who achieves her dreams.

I love my college! I am a student at the University of Kentucky. So far, I have gotten a lot out of my experience there. I took some time off before becoming a student at twenty two, and my confidence in myself has been iraised exponentially. In fact, I used to hate math, and now want to double major in History, and Physics! It has been very valuable for me to attend school there because it has provided me with the confidence that I can succeed in college. I have gotten to see Jupiter, and it's four largest moons (and a dying star) which I never would have had the opportunity to see with my own eyes were I not in school. I have come out of my shell a little, I even have the courage to answer questions in class. I feel that I am getting a very good education there, and already feel like I have more to offer at my current job as a preschool teacher, even though that's not what I'm getting my degree in.

When i was younger, I read the book Rich Dad, Poor Dad and decided that i didnt need college..I HAD A PLAN! Notice I said HAD? That thought soon went down the toilet! I went to Bible college in Oklahoma and loved it, but still no degree so I started working full time and moving up the corporate ladder rather rapidly. As I wanted to grow more and more, I noticed that if I had a degree, I would be making so much more! The woman I am now, its not so much the money(although it is important), its more the knowledge. I want to gain more knowledge to use in everyday life. I want to be able to face a situation and, because of my education, know exactly how to handle it successfully. Out of my experience so far, I have attained knowledge to help my management style and handling difficult tasks when asked. I want to continue to gain knowledge, just need help financially!

Elizabeth

My college experience has earned me a Sales Analyst position at a corporate business in the Minneapolis area. It allowed me to switch my career path from being a social worker to the more professional based society. I will be able to grow and learn from my employer and college in order to open my own business within the medical/healthcare field. While working full time, I will be able to attend Capella full time online. If I had to attend classes in the classroom, I wouldn't be able to reach my short term and long term goals sooner.

Isabella

It has been valuable to attend because it's a starting point in my college career. I want to attend a four year university, but I lack the finances. I do all that I can to find a job, I apply for scholarships, but nothing works to cover the finances. I am determined to succeed, I want to go to college, and I don't take it for granted, because it's truly amazing to be in college. I just don't have the money. It's too easy to give up, so I'm trying all that I can to succeed and exceed. Despite how things look, I have some sort of faith that everything will be ok in the long run, that I will reach my dream somehow. I don't even know how it'll happen, or if it will, now, due to lack of finances, which is what I have received from my college experience. I guess I just have to find a way to deal, find a way to do make it happen.

jessica

So far i have met new people and had life experiences that i wouldn't have ever dreamed of if i hadn't started school. I enjoy learning and expanding my knowledge and i thought i would have been stuck at the same dead end job forever, and if you don't go to college you will. Im going to school to become a pharmacy technician. Now a days its hard to even get a job without some college and with the economy the way it is and so many people out of work its not only good for you to go to college but you need it to even stand a chance against other people in the workforce. They asked us in school why we were attending and i wrote down for my future, for what i didn't have as a child, for my future children, for my future grandchildren, for my parents when they are older and for my future husband.

Corrina

Out of my college experience I have learned that grades don't come easy anymore . In high school I didn't have to work hard for my good grades but entering college has hit me with a textbook. I have learned that you have to put hard work in order to get what you want. This has proved valuable because it is a life lesson for me . I need to put all the effort into something I truly want and not expect it to be handed to me. In all, college has taught me to really strive for my dreams.

Donald

I'm learning the skills I need to in order to become successful.

Michael

That sometimes taking a break but returning whenthe time is right makes the experience worth it. Feeling no pressure makes the experience easier to deal with and able to produce good grades allows me to stay positive. I like the idea of furthering my education but the costs limit what the future will bring. Thank you for your consideration, Michael Rank

jamie

I have learned so much from my college experience! I have brushed up on all my basic school skills, learned time management, learned how to be a better communicator, and so much more. Each day I am getting closer and closer to my goal of making a better life for my family, and the opportunity to help others. I think college has been a wonderful experience for me, and has given me much more than I expected!

Jose

Resposibility, loyalty, respect and fast thinking. The college experience is something that cannot be forgotten. The mission statement of the university reflects on the value of the university. I am the first family member to go into a Master's degree program. Education is very important to me, I have grown up with a single parent , my mother who she taught me the value of life and way of thinking to move forward in life. It is valuable to attend school and continue your education because no other can take that knowledge away from you. Everyone makes decesion in life, everyday everyone makes decesion. Education should be a top priority. When you start makins decsions and adding other activities on top of education the priority of education falls and you add other activities as your priority. I have learned that education should be on top of the priority list and you should never let it fall down.

My college experience has become the central focus of my life, as I have been a full-time student for the past few months. It has been a difficult journey returning to school at my age, especially while working at a full-time career that is also competing for my time and energy. I have learned so much during my journey and I would not replace it for anything. I thought that an online University would be "walk in the park" but I found that to be incorrect. I currently attend Capella University as an Information Technology major and I find it much more difficult than traditonal schools. The major difference is the level of learning and the high-demand this school puts on each student. Although it can be frustrating, I am actually very pleased with my college experience, simply because I am paying straight out of my pocket and I feel that I am getting every penny's worth. I know that I am being educated and that it will payoff n the future.

Ganna

It is a new generation type of school: on-line university. So, by attending this school I personally think that I invest into the progress of our communities. Capella University gave me an opportunity to study in United States in a very convenient way, when traditional schools turned their back on me. Also, this school is very supportive and has well organized courses that already taught me many new ideas, thoughts, and skills that I will most likely to use in my future carrier as a Project Manager. The fact that most of my peers are people with senior level of work experience helps me to learn and understand from them the real working world.

Lakeisha

I am still in the process of enrolling in the university. My classes do not begin until August 9,2010.

Katie

Throughout my college experience, I have had the priveledge of getting a great education and experience so far. I switched from a 2 year technical college to an accrediated on-line college to finish off my bachelor's degree on-line. I feel as if the on-line school gives me more time at home with my 8 year old daughter. I am a single working mother just trying to finish my education in the criminal justice field. Capella University has helpful staff always ready answer any questions that I may have. I couldn't ask for a better experience when switching colleges. Not to mention the amount of my credits that have transferred were extremely helpful when finishing up my degree. I will start my first class in about three weeks and everything I have been worried about is no longer a concern of mine. I am feeling confident and ready to tackle any task at hand.

Rebecca

My college experience thus far has opened my eyes to the absolute importance of education. After twenty years, one tends to forget. I am currently enrolled in online classes at Kaplan university. I realize that education opens up an entirely different world filled with endless possibilities. I can barely contain my excitement in being chosen, as a student. I would like an opportunity to convince other uneducated adults and teenagers , just starting out, of this fact! The only way, to ever rise above your situation and do better, is through education. (Mom was right!) I am a single mother of three, I live in a tiny town and I recieve social security disability. I now understand, by attaining a college education, I can possitivly affect my life, my children's and everyone else's around me! To live is to learn.

Amanda

During my time in college, I have found more of a drive within myself to keep moving forward and to have a career in the pharmaceutical business. I am confident that I will be able to provide great service and learn new material quickly. I love learning more about science and the medical profusion. I feel that I can help people by working in a pharmacy. I have some nervous damage in my hands that can cause them to shake when I’m nervous or some times when I just over use them. So I can not become a nurse for fear of stabbing some one with a needle. I can still help people be working in the medical field and I find natural cures to also be fascination. Maybe one day I will discover a medical drug to help people. I also seem to have a natural ability of organizing and motivating people toward achievement a goal. My goals objectivity allows me to develop procedures or regulations that take care of present and future situations. I know have a strong work ethic, and desire structure, schedule, and order because of my time in collage.

Luis

This is my first semester at Capella University and so far it has been very promising. The courses itself provides constant thinking and helpful in a manager position. Also, the teacher's are helpful with any questions and answer in less than 24 hrs depending on the time zone. There is a lot of class interactions with peers. All in all the experience has been very gratifying and beneficial.

Christine

Having only been affiliated with Capella University for less than a week I will use my past experience as a student in Iowa. I was told by my High School guidance counselor that I was not college material and that I should stick to my ballet career. Well I took that as a challenge and attended a University in Iowa. This was one of the most rewarding experiences of learning! The professors had such a plethora of information that they made you want to learn more! It even spurred me on to attend Nuclear Medicine School! Every class has benefited me to this day, whether it be the study habits, communication skills, or the psychology of working with people from different cultures. The college experience has made me a student of research. I believe I have become addicted to change and look forward to each learning experience! I thank the University of Northern Iowa for the personal encouragement for me to go further in my studies and wishing me success in my future!

Jamie

I believe going to school is a wonderful experience it helps me better life not only for me but for my daughter as well. As a single mother I need to continue to learn so I can continue to teach my daughter to be a better person. There is as the financial parts in life were I have to support the both of us and without school and continuing my education I don't believe I can do that.

Tricia

For the past two years at Iowa Lakes community college, i have learned how valuable it is to attend; my first year of college i didnt do so well, so when i came back my second year i decied that i would try my hardest on all my classes and i did. I am a Resident Assitant for the 2009-2010 year at iowa lakes. Attending here you get the best one-on-one work with the teachers and you really get the since of a "Small town community" i think its valuable beacuse you dont have the stress of a big city and wondering if your going to be safe or not. At Iowa Lakes there are many programs offered, there are four campuses that are within a half hour away to take classes. Out of being here my advantages is that i get the one on one work that I need with the instructors and i amd close to home. Attending here has helpped me grow tremendously as a person, i have learned how to be a self advocator and strive for the best. At ILCC your learn to grow as one and with your peers.

Christina

So far, what I have gotten out of my college experience is that no matter what school you go to whether it is online or at a campus, you need to stay focused in order to achieve your goals in becoming what you desire to be in your career and try to not let others deter you into achieving this goal. I have heard from so many others that tell me having a degree is so valuable when looking for a career, and I see others that do not have them that seem to be struggling and trying to stay ahead. I wish I learned 10 years ago that receiving your degree before you get married, before you have children, and before you start your life is the most important thing you should do. Then you will be able to pass this valuable information on to your kids and teach them this by example, and then they will hopefully do it the right way!

Michel

Like most others I could say the lack of student aid, and/ or my bad marriage was a major factor in my decision to drop out of college. But, the fact is that I dropped out because I was not academically prepared. I lacked self-discipline and was emotionally disengaged. I have a very good job and felt like college was not a necessity. Unfortunately, I soon realized that I had instilled this behavior in my son. College has not been important to him. He was under the impression that anyone could land a good paying job. When I started at BCBCSFL in the 1997 that was true, but not today. I am back in school not only to better myself, but to encourage my son and show him anything is possible; and that you are never to old to learn. When I re-entered school back in 2007 it was not easy. I did not always pass my exams and I even failed a class. But I got up, dusted myself off and told myself that tomorrow would be different and each day would be brighter. So, what I have gotten was the confidence to try.

John

I feel as though I have gotten to open many doors to career opprotunities, and make many lasting friendships. One way I have been able to open career opprotunities is by gaining my degree, i will have a much lower chance of being laid off from a future job, which I have had toubles with previously. Also, I have had the ability to take internships, which has helped me to better decide on that career I would like to have in the future. Another way that my college experience has been valuable to me is through my gained ability to make long lasting friends. Through my participation in clubs, and study groups I have made many friends that I can connect with and relate to.

Randall

I made a good time magemnet routine for myself because I have a job and go school part time. This school definately helped me manage my time alot better.

Steve

What have I gotten out of my college experience you ask? Well I have learned that when it comes to colleges one should really think twice about what school you wish to attend. I chose to attend a tech school because I could get a BA in three years instead of four. In order to do so one needs allot of help from financial aid, something I for one don't get. For example my advisor forgot to ok my private loan that I had to get to help pay for school. My advisor then called and asked when I am going to pay them, even though there was money sitting at school waiting to be finalized, but to make matters worse my advisor has lost important documents that contained vital information about me and my parents. So in closing its best to choose a well rounded school not one that get you in and out with a degree in a hurry and treats you as such.

Chris

Although I have not yet started courses at Capella, which are scheduled for this coming August, I do have previous college experiece and have grown to appreciate the true value of an education. Not only is exercise of the mind important to a happy and fulfilling life, but the challenge of getting a good education will help open many doors that would otherwise not be available to most. Continuing my education helps me keep a positive attitude and sense of fulfillment knowing that when I am done I will have my degree and access to a serious and relevent career.

Weslie

It is extremely valuable for me to pursue my education in order to continue my growth throughout my current career path. I have learned that it's never too late to attend and anyone at any age can take on the challenge. I continued to put off going back to school, but can certainly see it's advantages regardless of when it happens.

Jodie

I would have told myself to go right out of high school. It would have been easier to adjust to college at that time. While I am happy I decided to continue my education, I really wish I would have went right out of high school, mainly because it would have been easier for me to stay in the swing of studying and I wouldn't have had anything else to worry about but school.

Brandy

In high school, teachers and counselors told me how important it was that I find a college or university to attend and also a career path to follow. Back then, I did not understand the magnitude of what they were telling me. I thought that it would not affect me adversely if I skipped this step in life. After living life in the real world for a while, I have learned that I was wrong. Had I known then what I know now, I would have told myself to focus on getting my Associate's degree in general studies during that first two years since I did not know which career path to take yet. And while I was working on that, I would have told myself to get involved in other activities, clubs, groups, etc. to expand my areas of interest and awareness of what is out there. I may have discovered sooner that I want to be a teacher had I positioned myself in an atmosphere to find that out. I also would have tried desperately to convince myself that completing a college degree really and truly is a crucial step in a persons' maturity and personal growth.

Vannetta

If I were able to go back into time and speak to myself as a high school senior, I would tell myself to stay in school no matter what. I would also explain that there is plenty of time to live the rest of my life. The time invested in college now will determine the course of my life and the decisions I make as a high school senior will follow me and affect my life and my family?s life. I can sacrifice now in high school or later it is my choice, and hopefully I will make the best one possible.

Joe

I would tell myself to stick it out and work hard at obtaining that degree without delay, because it really is vital to your future. I would also tell myself to take advantage of student working opportunities to get into the field that I am studying for.

shandi

The only advice I would ive myself would be to stop worrying. Try your best and you can do anything.

Jessica

The advice that I would give myself if I could back in time would be that college is not that intimidating and that I can do it!! Although I had no support at home or at school in making those decisions to go to college I would let myself know that I can find the answers and do the research myself, and that it really is not that hard no matter if it seems like a mountain that I may not be able to see over at the time. I would let myself know how much harder that it would be in the future for me and that I would be saving so much time if I could do it now and that all those things that I thought were so important would not be there in the future. I think the most important thing is giving myself the confidence that I can do it and that I would be so proud of myself in the future.

Leesa

I would give my advice by taking prep college courses.

Yvonne

If I could go back in time as a high school senior, I would advice myself in taking my future more seriously and to use my academic talents a lot better. I would be more sociable and be more active in clubs, sports and organizations both at school and in my community. I would sign up for classes that would transfer or be able to be applied as college credits. Overall, the best advice I would give myself is know where I want to be in the future then go get it. Do not be afraid and let obstacles get in the way of what it is you want the most.

Sarah

I would tell my self that going to college right out of highschool is the best thing to do. That waiting makes it harder all around. You have to worry about paying bills, family, and having time to study.

Jessica

Looking back at the choices I?ve made since high school (not to mention the unexpected paths my life has taken), I would offer myself several pieces of advice if could go back in time to my senior year of high school. First, I would caution myself to carefully consider my college major before officially committing to one. As an option, taking core curriculum courses for the first year of college would allow me more time to make to the decision. It doesn?t seem to be an important decision at such a young age, but it is ? going back to school as a full-time employee, wife, and mother is not an easy path to take. Second, I would share information about scholarships and grants. There are many that are not commonly known and these offer an excellent opportunity to ease the cost of college. Lastly, I would impart the knowledge that higher level learning is an invaluable experience; you may not apply everything you learn ?in the real world?, but you will find a place for most of the information. And, more importantly, the experience prepares you to transition from school life to work life.
