College of Charleston Top Questions

Describe the students at your school.

Blake

I think its pretty mixed, I know theres only about a ten percent black population other than that I don't really notice much. I don't really notice too many people because then I would probably have to talk to them.

Rory

The student body is definitely diverse. No student would feel out of place. Most students wear whatever they like to class. Some dress up and others come in their pajamas. The point is to be there to learn and it's not about what you look like. Students come from all over the country, surprisingly. I met a girl from Brazil my first semester and we are friends now. Students have a diverse financial background also, but that's everywhere. The students here are very involved in politics.

Tia

Diversity here sucks. They're tryin to fix that, but if u're not part of the mainstream student population, u tend to stick out. Like any other college tho, u've got greeks, jocks, stoners, nerds...all the usual cliches of college kids.

Kelly

Not too much diversity at first glance but if you look hard enough there is definitely a mix of people. There are a lot of wealthy people from outside the state and many in state kids are poorer. I think any student can fit in at CofC you just have to be willing to get involved with a group, club, or bunch of kids that like similar things.

Erica

The campus is wildly diverse in regards to the student population - there is no typical College of Charleston student. A single stereotype does not dominate the campus, the atmosphere on campus is open to whatever voice you could want to hear or share. Conservative, Liberal, Democrat, Republican, hard core politician, or voting just for the name - our students are on every end of the spectrum. There is no polarization of the campus though, no animosity or ill feeling about politics between students.

sam

I have met some of the greatest people here at C of C, friends that will stick with me for years to come. There is a vast array of people at the college, and they are overall the nicest people I have met in a long time.

Brett

Mostly middle-upper class white kids. Love to party. Excessively into getting laid. Most students study but also have social lives as well.

Lizzie

there are so many different types of people at the college that it would be difficult to feel out of place as long as you are proactive and make an effort to meet people. most student wear very casual clothes to school, jeans or shorts and flip flops with whatever range top you like. you can even wear pajamas if you like. i feel that there isn't very much interaction between the different types of students, cofc seems to be quite cliquey. Most student seem to be from the carolina area, and there are also many from the south and many from the north. there is a large range of financial backgrounds, however most people seem to be at a fairly normal and regular level of finance, and there are also the richies and those who are a bit strapped for cash. Students are very politically aware and active. i have seem no predominance between left and right. And yes they talk about and worry about how much they will earn in the future.

Sara

As long as you are open, C of C has a lot of friendly people. Students are pretty liberal and talk openly about sex, religion, and politics.

Maggie

My experience with the demographics of CofC was vast. There are people of all ethnic and religious backgrounds. I find that the financial background of MOST people that I met was upper middle class to upper class. However, I met a lot of people who came from a lower socio-economic background that were there on scholarship. As far as 'cliques' go, you have your typical sorority/frat group, the 'nerdy' honors college kids, the punk kids, the gangstas. But really, its not like high school and I always see people from differen't cliques talking to one another. Wherever there is a group of human beings there will be groups with similar characteristics but the people at CofC aren't snobby enough to fall into a category of people that won't talk to you if you are different.

Laura

I really don't think anyone would feel out of place. I feel the school is well mixed. Students wear a mix of either sweats and t-shirts or skirts and boat shoes. It really depends.

Gene

There are all kinds of students on the campus. And the groups at our school reflect that. On any given day you might find a group on campus hosting an event to having a bake sale to raise funds. These groups range from Greek life, language clubs, political clubs, religous clubs, environmental groups, even anime clubs...you name it and we probably have it. The students on campus are radically different and that only enhances your educational experience and your ability to communicate and work with different kinds of people. Most of the students at the College are from South Carolina, but we have students from all over the country and our number of international students is growing. In my classes I have met people from Germany, Zimbabwe and everywhere in between. Although South Carolina is a conservative state, you will find people who are radically left and right at the college. Financially CofC has been said to resemble a country club. Although many students do come from families that are well off, it is not uncommon to find a student who works full time to pay for their college expenses.

Ryan

The student body is primarily made up of students from middle to upper middle class families. It is redominantley white and there are more females than males. Students are fom a variety of places. I don't think there is an overwhelmng number of in state students; most people I know are form out of state. Students where different types of things to class. Some girls wear sweatshirts and rainbow sandals everyday, while others where citizens or seven jeans, jack rogers or bernardo sandals, and a longchamp bag. Pretty much anyone will fit in between the extremes.

Jordan

Personally I think there are definitely clicks, but for the most part they are all very accepting. And I always am amazed because I feel like everyone some how knows each other. Maybe its facebook.

Patricia

It is not a very racially mixed campus, mostly white. It has an extremly high gay population. Students dress casually for class, but sundresses are very common. Most CofC students are middle class South Carolina residents. Because there are so many people from South Carolina out of state students may find it difficult to fit in at first because it seems like everyone already knows eachother. Even though I am not involved in the Greek Life I suggest that both women and men become involved. It is not taken too seriously at CofC, it won't absorb all of your time, and it is an amazing way to meet people and they have the best partys.

Bailey

The student body is of a wide variety. There are a lot of different groups with a lot of different kinds of people. I feel like almost anyone could come to the College of Charleston and find their own knitch of friends. I personally have all different types of friends, but I know some people who just stay in their comfort zone.

sydney

You cannot sterotype any certain place, but the majority of students here are pretty mixed socially. Lots of hippies, preps, surfers/skaters, outdoorsy people. There are way too many girls though. And they are all really pretty, but mostly everyone is super nice.

Nina

No diversity ... none at all. Typical upper middle class and upper class Christian students. Most students wear flip flops in the summer, Ugg boots and mini skirts when it's colder and Luis V. rain boots, which all match their North Face coats/jackets and book bags. Essentially, everyone looks the same. There are a few BMWs on campus and most students commute to school because living downtown is expensive. If you're struggling financially, you may feel a little out-of-place-here. Additionally, any student that is proud of their ethnicity and that is not Caucasian and willing to conform will feel a little out of place, at least for a while too. If you don't like gay people, don't come here because a good number of the 40{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of guys here aren't interested in the 60{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of girls here. I can't speak for the entire school atmosphere, but I haven't witnessed many liberal political ideas around campus. Everyone just goes about their business and they don't seem to care much. Since this is the south, I would classify the campus as conservative and republican, especially because many students here are so homogeneous.

Kate

Well, the student body of course it very diverse. There are always going to be those students that are super involved and always go to the events led by the school on-campus. Then there will be the students who are friends with one of them or an RA that go to occasional things when they are dragged to them. School spirit is normal I guess. I don't think the games or anything are completely packed with screaming fans, but their okay. When you actually come here, it feels like the most people that are out-of-state are from Maryland! I've met so many people from Maryland! You'll meet several that are in-state though and quite a few that are locals.

Victoria

a lot of clubs and groups for all different types of students, students are starting to come from various backgrounds and other areas

Sara

Very diverse, but still a pretty wealthy school from just what you can see on the cover. Most are from SC or the south in general, but I've met plenty of people from all over.

Claire

There are many different races, religions, sexual preferences and economic situations represented at the CofC campus. Most CofC students are from South Carolina, Ohio, and New Jersey. But mostly from New Jersey, and they are for sure proud of it. I noticed my first few days on campus freshman year that a lot of girls get dressed up for class and I thought that was the norm. So I dressed nice the first few days of classes and now after realizing that I could have that extra 10 minutes of sleep, I mainly just wear a t-shirt and shorts/jeans. I absolutely recommend working at an office or somewhere else on campus, you get an opportunity to meet people that you otherwise might not have met (people with different races, religions, political views or maybe just a different dorm). Before I came to CofC I assumed that since the Greek system was so active here we would be a predominantly right-wing school. But since arriving I realize that it's a pretty even balance between left and right wing beliefs on campus. And with the presidential elections coming up this fall, the School of Communications has been hosting the 'Bully Pulpit' which offered presidential hopefuls the chance to come to the CofC campus and speak to our opinionated students about their feelings and beliefs.

Reese

Diverse. Lots of girls. Beautiful beautiful women...Mmmm.

Liz

Charleston is full with people from both the north and the south so there is a big diversity of people. Obviously, there is a lot of southern mentality which takes a lot getting used to (I'm from New England), but really, you can find many different people if you look.

Dawson

CofC is mostly made up of white, upper middle class students from around the southeast and some from the northeast. There are not many minority students, but I do not believe that this is on purpose. There is a large gay scene in Charleston as a whole and the LGBT population on campus reflects this. I have found the student population to be very socially liberal, even if most students are from more conservative backgrounds. Students from outside of the south may have a hard time adjusting to Charleston, but CofC is a great school in a very beautiful and liberal town. I have friends who came here from up north, the midwest and west coast, and they love it here. Students who need the big city atmosphere will probably feel out of place here, as well as those who dislike the heat. It gets very hot in Charleston and we don't actually have four distinct seasons. Winter is rainy and cold, but short. Fall is hot and dry and it is not uncommon for it to reach 80 degrees well into November. Spring is gorgeous, but a bit short and before you know it, it is 100 degrees outside and so humid that you are thankful that the beach is so close. People wear all kinds of clothes around campus. You can find many who never really make it out of their pj's and sweat pants, to people who are always in nice clothes, and everything in between. CofC must have=flip-flops. We wear them with everything, suits, dresses, shorts, jeans, year-round and all types of colors and styles. Seriously. I have found that most students have all different types of friends. You will meet friends in class that maybe you would not have hung out with in high school, but you get to know them and see how we are really all the same. Most students come from upper middle class backgrounds, which is good for lower income students because there are more grants and scholarships available. I know from experience. Students are very politically aware and active. I would say that most students would describe themselves as being conservative, but we are actually more moderate than anything else. No one talks about money much, just plans for grad school, law school, med school or traveling.

Megan

Oh goodness...you can't even classify CofC's student body because everyone is all so different but all hang out together. On any typical Friday night out or Tuesday night study sesh at the library you can find a gorgeous blond beach bunny with a killer smile and outgoing personality, a dred-locked CA native surfer, an outrageous kid from Boston, and a down right sweet southern boy all hanging together and best friends...and that is why I LOVE CofC because everyone is so friendly that NO ONE ever feels out of place. ever.

Lauren

Students here are VERY informed, and yes politics are often discussed. Sure, some snobby kids with daddy's credit card and a bad attitude go here, but there are enough nice, friendly people to balance that out.

Jesse

The school is, like the rest of South Carolina, kind of divided racially. They try but there are the white fraternities then the black fraternities and so on. But there are a variety of people at cofc all the way from the basketball players to the honors program people to the arts people. Everyone seems to interact pretty well, no animosity. I would watch out, most students at CofC I have encountered are pretty well off financially. That may be a problem for some, there are more 'snobs' then I would like and many who live off of daddy's money. Students are more polical than I had assumed, a little more conservative.

Tristan

the college is not very diverse. mosty white preppy kids. despite the school's southern location, a vast population hails from up around Maryland, PA, or MA. i get a ton of phillie kids, and like me it seems like everybody and thier brother is from maryland. Of course, there is a lot of Gerogia, SC and NC.

Alex

Very white- for a state thats 50{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} black, i think its 8{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} in the student body. We are getting a lot more international as the school's reputation grows. The kids are from all over. I came down here thinking i would be hanging out with a lot of Nascar fanatical south carolinians, it seems like half the school is from out of state. There are a lot of affluent kids here, and some that aren't so financially stable- there is a big mix up.

Brian

I've found that most students at CofC are from South Carolina, but every once in a while you'll meet someone from way out there and you'll wonder "How did they hear about CofC?" I think everyone is much more accepting of people who are "different" and who you wouldn't normally hang out with. Class is very laid back and i think everyone has come to class at least once in their pajamas.

Caitlin

The typical student is a rich and trendy partier. They are either from Charleston or from some place up north with a lot of money. Everyone pretty much dresses the same with the exception of a few hippies. I found it a little difficult to find someone to have a good cup of coffee with because most would prefer a party with alcohol.

Grace

A ton of northerners. Greek life is not extremely necessary but helpful to meet people because it can be hard to meet people. Very liberal campus. A lot of wealthy students. Different types of students do not interact much.

Nico

school spirit, more diversity, and more minorities.

Erin

There is a lack in diversity at C of C, but for me it's all relative. Minorities tend to group together and vice versa, however, overall everyone is friendly and gets along with each other no matter what the race is. I think it tends to be comfort zones, but I have never heard one racist comment since I have been here. Students tend to wear anything and everything to class. You will see a girl in full makeup a dress and heels and a girl with her hair up, sweatpants and a t-shirt. No one really cares what you look like when you arrive to class. There is every financial class you can imagine as well as politics and overall, there are no groups in the dining hall. Everyone just sits with their friends. No one is exclusive and there aren't known athletes, cheerleaders, or mathletes in the entire college.

Susan

Most of us wear jeans, normal everyday stuff. You may dress a little nicer for a presentation or something like that. There will always be those kids in sweats or PJ pants and likewise those kids in trendy hip stuff- most people just follow their own style. Overall I would say that the biggest thing about CofC's student body is that your gonna find your niche, and you'll interact with different kinds of people but if you don't make the effort to get to know kids outside your "circle" then you'll feel like everyone's kinda the same.

Chelsea

Not many indians or blacks. mostly whites.

Morgan

The student body is very expressive, which I love! If there is something they want to say, they will say it. There is so much diversity on campus also, that not only are there a ton of things going on, but there is also a wide variety too.

Brittany

Well this school is in the South so there are some subtle moments of racism. It is not really abig idea because the students dont make it a big deal. The College of Charleston in VERY VERY big on multiculturism! It brings students of all races and nationalities together (which is really great). There are on campus dialogues that help the students express themselves; it gives you an opportunity to walk in someone else's shoes. No matter what background you come from I dont think anyone should feel left out at the College. Students from the College come from all over, up north, further south, midwest, and west coast! Students are very involved in politics and keepig people informed. Especially with this upcoming 08 election the collge has had many different forums and informational sessions on whats going on.

Bri

C of C has been attracting a large number of out-of-states students, especially from the north, as well as plenty of South Carolinians. Socioeconomically it's generally upper-middle class because C of C is expensive for out-of-staters without much financial aid or scholarship. Religiously it's primarily Christian (a large Baptist population as well as very liberal denominations) or agnostic/apathetic. But that's all very laid-back and accepting for the most part, although being a Christian does bring some stereotypes immediately among the more liberal groups on campus. There are some pretty good activist groups on campus, especially in regards to Darfur and social awareness, the environment, and fundraising for Alternative Spring Breaks or races for cancer awareness/cures. LGBT does have a presence on campus although it seems pretty small or quiet to me. Racially I have not seen much interaction between the white kids, black kids, or Hispanic kids. They kind of stay together. The sororities and fraternies have their own group as well, and that seems like the most exclusive but people I know in them are generally pretty happy. It's a split between liberal and conservative I feel like, with emphasis on the liberal. Girls are usually dressed very nicely for class every day. Generally, people find niches but there are several different "groups" for any one person. There is a fair amount of interaction for the socially friendly/outgoing person. I've found most people to be accepting and friendly. The emphasis seems to be on having fun in all aspects of college life and not strictly on jobs, academics, etc.

Crystal

There is a huge variety of different kinds of students at C of C, so I believe that it would be hard to feel out of place. Most students wear normal clothes to class, whatever their style is, no one really cares. I would say higher class financial backgrounds are most common, from my experience. I have met a surprisingly high amount of liberals.

Aileen

There are different goups at CofC, but they are always inviting to other people. I do not feel that there is much discrimination on campus. I also do not feel that any student would feel out of place at CofC because there is something for everyone there. To class, many students often wear t-shirts and jeans if their class is in the morning. However, many students of the school dress very respectively.

Jo

You would feel out of place at CofC if you were a transvestite, I guess. But other than that, there are a bunch of artsy folk who seem to all hang out with eachother.

Don

The student body at CofC is very diverse. There are people of all races, religions, ethnicities, SECs, etc. I guess the best way to describe the student body in one word is MOTLEY. You can be in a class with 5 frat guys, 5 sorority girls, 5 shoe-less hippies, and 5 individuals (people that don't feel the need to pay for friends or stop showering to discover themselves...not that there's anything wrong with that. To each his own.). People at CofC are politically aware. Just this past semester I went to see Obama speak in the Cistern, and the place was packed. There was a line that stretched for blocks. Its hard to describe the student body, and do it justice. You'll just have to come and see it for yourself.

Jessica

Quiet, shy, introverted students would feel out of place. College of Charleston is a very loud and colorful school. It is easy to fit into what ever crowd you like because of the variety and amount of groups. Most students are pretty aware of politics and have many opinions. Most students have a rich financial backgrounds and love talking about it.

Sam

There are a lot of obnoxious fraternity and sorority students who always complain about being hung-over. Alcohol is huge on campus and you'll be lucky if you can get through one class where someone doesn't complain about being hung-over. Almost everyone in the POLS department are liberal and want to join the Peace Core, again in my position, if you are a conservative, you are a minority at the school and will be looked down on in the POLS department. But in the professors' defense, a lot of them try to stay neutral most of the time, but rarely any of them fully make it. A lot of the cirriculum is liberal and blows the neutrality anyway. There are student organizations everywhere and they are constantly doing something on campus, so lots of activities to do.

Megan

CofC is very diverse. And just the fact of knowing that it's a Liberal Arts school, you know mostly everyone is open-minded and loves to meet new and unique people. Most students are liberal and you can be very active. I met and talked with John Edwards during his campaign for presidency and got to hear Barak Obama speak. It was amazing. But there's also a large amount of conservatives on campus. I also met and talked with John McCain. There's something for everyone. Financial backgrounds are all over the place. There's some very rich people here, and then there's people like me who have taken out ridiculous amounts of student loans just to go to college.

Sammi

There is some interacting with different types of kids. Middle class is the most prevalent financial background. Students are politically aware and active and come from the right, left and center.

Claire

The student body is made up of sixty percent South Carolina natives, and the rest are from NJ, MD, and OH. Most students are white middle class. I would estimate 10{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} or less of the pop is considered "diverse".

Tate

The cofc student body is a very good one. Overall there are a ton of out of state students, a lot coming from up north and they are usually on the wealthy side, so they can sometimes be the ones who like to party, but they are all nice people. There are a lot of girls too, being a guy down there is nice because it is very easy to meet good looking girls as well. Like every school you have your snobs, skaters, emos, and other types of people, but down here there are never any problems with people interacting or doing there own thing. I would say I have a lot of different kind of friends and it is easy to get along with all of them.
