What are the academics like at your school?

Caroline

I really enjoyed my classes that pertained to my major and minors. Compared to other schools, I felt like CofC did not require too many general requirements that were unnecessary. A cool thing about some classes and some professors is that at the beginning of spring, or end of fall, they have class outside, usually on the Cistern. But there is such a wide spectrum of classes, they even offer Arabic, which I took as an elective.

Abby

YES! The professors I've had all know my name, and all of the professors in the Psychology department, even the ones I haven't had, know my name too! Favorite: Conditioning and Learning Least Favorite: Bio 112 Lab Class participation vaires by class, but on average is common. Yes, I think that the students have intellecutal conversations outside of class! Yes, I feel that some if not most students want to be the best of the best. Most unique class: Acting I love the Psychology Department and I love being a Psychology major! Everyone is so friendly and great, and I really excell in this field!! I just wish that a Psychological Science Center would be built to bolster the growing scientific side of Psychology, but more so than this I wish new facilities for the Animal Care and Use program would be built, seperate from the Science Center. That really doesn't have a lot to do with the Psych department, but I still feel strongly about it. I've spent a lot of time with professors outside of class, by doing research, independent studies, and by being involved in Psychology Club and Psi Chi. I like the liberal arts techinique, but I wish that my AP History credits counted towards History rather than electives.

Gabi

The liberal arts curriculum enables students to explore all areas of study enabling them to choose a major that really fits their personality and future life plan. Also, the 30:1 student/teacher ratio enables students to have a more personal relationship with professors. There are always tons of opportunities offered by professors for students to conduct research and further explore their area of study (as well as expand their resume).

Katie

since the class size is on the smaller side, the teachers usually know your name. during finals, the library is packed with studious people, like most schools. depending on the class, participation varies. in language classes and philosophy classes, participation is welcomed but in larger lecture halls, participation is usually not as common. i took a world history class (history 104, part two of the required history) and my teacher taught the class through food. since charleston has so many wonderful and diverse restaurants, we would take a field trip to one and then write a paper about our experience there.

Jaime

In the smaller classes the professors make it a point to get to know the students. Student opinions are always welcome in class discussions, disagreements are common but each side is respectful of the other. In the Physics department (my major) there are always special topics classes that are interesting and fun. The professors are easy to contact if you need help with anything.

Torry

pretty har

Amy

Almost all of my professors know me by name, but will not call on you very often. Although most of my classes have been small (under 30) as a freshman, they are still lecture style. CofC is getting harder, so more students are competitive, will study more outside of class, and will spend more time with their professors. The general education requirements are very through, CofC makes sure you have a base knowledge in EVERYTHING. THe psych major is very strong at the college, they make sure you have a very well rounded education, and are very willing to help.

Paige

The class size is wonderful because you can get personal with your professor, at my old college I hated having 300 people in my class. There's a lot more class participation because there aren't that many people so everyone gets to know each other and everyone likes to join in on the conversations. The classes are more difficult I believe than schools like Coastal Carolina in Myrtle Beach, but I know that it'll better prepare all of the pre-med students for medical school. It's nice knowing you have a professor that has a passion for their subject, since a few of my professors wrote their own textbooks.

Katherine

Knowledge for its own sake is extremely important to the professors at C of C, and every one that I've had so far has been extremely enthusiastic about teaching. Though I haven't liked all my classes, I can tell the professors put a lot of time and effort into the syllabus. The administrative faculty encourage students to broaden their horizons by taking classes outside their comfort zone, and I think it drives the students to actually want to learn more.

Alex

If you have the opportunity to take a geology class do not miss the opportunity to learn from Dr. Doyle, Dr. Colgan, or Dr. Jaume. I had absolutely no interest in taking geology but had to do so to fulfill a requirement and am now a double major. The most important thing to remember is that class participation can definitely influence your grade. Don't skip classes as this too can influence your grade and you can be dropped from a class if you violate the attendance policy.

Adrianna

Most professors are very helpful and friendsly. You either get really good grades or really bad grades. Easy to get into but hard to stay in.

Samantha

i liked all of my classes and professors.

rachel

All of my professors from fall and spring semester took the time to get to know their students. The college pays for professors to take their classes to get coffee and dessert before or after class, which is great! The amount of hours studying depends on the student... but for the most part, the students at CofC WANT to be here and care about their grades and their future. Almost everyone I've met is highly ambitious and extremely motivated. Many professors have one-on-one conferences with you to discuss anything you need cleared up, whether confusion about a lecture or assignment or just to see where you are grade-wise. The college requires that each student fulfill general education requirements, which include tedious and seemingly pointless courses.

Dana

Most professors know my name, the only ones who don't usually just aren't good with names. The classes are almost always small enough for professors to be able to have one-on-one conversations with the students and to answer personal questions. My favorite class would have to be my introduction to theatre class. I loved my fellow classmates and I really enjoyed the variety of things that we did. We did everything from directing and acting to group projects and research presentations. My least favorite class was my business stats class, but that was only because it was super tough and stressed me out a lot. CofC's academic requirements are getting tougher by the year. Our grade scale was recently altered so that it is more difficult to get an A. We actually no longer have an A + at all.

Nico

I didn't realize how much small class sizes make a difference. All of my classes (even the introductory ones) have had about 20 students in each one. It's nice to know your professor and talk comfortable one on one with them. There aren't intimidating class sizes, so going to class isn't a scary thing. The general education requirements suck, but they have broadened my horizons and made me consider other major possibilities. Overall, the teachers and classes are great...I couldn't ask for more.

Ashley

Good professors, classes aren't too difficult

KJ

great classes, hard and not so hard. depends on your school and the teachers in that school. foreign language classes are easy, but they always seem to require a lot of wk. usually you don't have to be great at the class, just show interest and act like you care, do the work and you will pass. I am a health major- my teachers are great. not too difficult and interesting. lots to do for some, but worth it for the volunteer experience or work experience you will need later on.

Anna

Because the class sizes are so small, teachers expect you to show up to class, notice if you're absent, and oftentimes, have an attendance policy. A lot of teachers also base a percentage of your final grade on class participation, so it is important to speak up in class. One of the most unique classes that College of Charleston offers is sailing. It is also a very popular class, and therefore, fills up quickly. I think that the education at C of C is definitely geared toward getting a job, especially within the Business department.

Erica

profs rarely know names, classes are long and boring, try to cram too much into too little time, no one participates or cares about academics, just getting drunk and sleeping around and going to the beach, CofC cares only about looking good, don't care if students really get anything out of it

Mike

Umm, the professors are anywhere to the most brilliant minds you will ever meet or the biggest self-serving idiots you will meet. However, I will say that this is not limited to one department rather the good is mixed with the bad.

rachel

The professors for the most part are amazing! If you take advantage of the office hours, you can get to know your professors well- I am pretty good friends with some of mine! I'm a sociology major, with minors in Crime, Law, and Society, Womens and Gender Studies, and Psychology. If you go into college and know exactly what you want to do, take plenty of classes in that subject, and you can probably use those classes for you minors as well.

Rachel

I like the fact that College of Charleston has a series of general education requirements. I think it is really helpful in making the transition from high school to college, rather than making a huge leap from high school courses straight into college ones. It lets new students start off in slightly familiar territory. The professors are all extremely helpful and easy to talk to when you go to their offices. I have only had one or two experiences with an awful professor, but everybody is going to have one of those. If every other professor I've had - and I've had a lot - is wonderful, I think that I am doing very well. I absolutely love my department and the professors in it. They are all wonderful people and very approachable. If I ever see them outside of class, they always strike up a conversation like I am an equal, which always makes me feel confident and like I am a real adult!

Paige

Depending on the class, many professors do know your name and even remember you a few years after you take their class. Most of the classes are challenging. In most cases, if you don't study, then you will fail. The best classes that I have taken here were the Japanese classes. The Japanese teachers really want you to learn and are very serious about teaching. Also, if you want to go to Japan, they are very helpful in finding programs and jobs for you. The psycology department is ok. Sometimes I felt that some of the teachers were making it harder than what the classes should have been, but I can't deny that I have learned a lot from psychology. I am glad I chose it as my major. The classes that I thought were a waste of time were the biology and psychology labs. They made you stay in a class for at least three hours straight and you only get one credit for the classes. You write rediculous reports when you find that there is no way you will conduct experiments and try to publish articles for science magazines after this class was over. I just felt that this was a waste of time. Too bad labs are required.

Miranda

Most of the departments are pretty impersonal. Especially the art department they SUCK! don't come to CofC for art unless you are already a self made artist. I started out a studio art major until my professors kindly killed my artistic drive. but I am a geology major now and I would say that the geology department is the most personal and family like group of all the departments i have had dealings with. teachers and students all party together. most of our professors are awesome. They are all very opened minded and willing to talk. I love the GEO department! Most students are too busy acting cool to be competitive and in most classes I've taken only about 5 percent of students participate in discussions.

Sarah

The professors are generally great and understanding. they usually know your name and remember you even after you've completed the course. There is a general emphasis on class participation, which makes course more interesting. The most unique class I've taken is the Sociology of Prejudice, which was very interesting. I feel like I am quite well-rounded after attending College of Charleston for two years.

Briana

CofC is a great place to go if you are looking to know your professors and have them know you. If you make an effort to participate in class, teachers will know you personally. Classes are very small (usually about 20). This allows participation and involvement, which I think greatly helped me throughout my college career.

Elena

The professors at the college are AWESOME. My favorite class so far would have to be History of Modern Latin America. Seriously, even though I didn't make very good grades, that class was so freaking interesting. Plus, my professor was really intelligent and really awesome so that made it even more interesting. There are really cool places that kind of promote intelligent conversations. Like, Kudu for example. It's this coffee shop on Vanderhorst thats amazing and I know I've had many an intelligent conversation with not only with my friends but with strangers.

Hannah

I have never had a class at CofC were a professor did not know my name. The largest class size I have ever had was 65 people and even then the professor knew who I was. In fact, she went out of her way to learn every person's name. I have to say my favorite class has been my World Lit classes. The professor is so passionate about what he teaches and it reflects in the student's work and their dedication to the subject. All of the professors I have had are very eager for students to come visit them during office hours and encourage students to do this often.

Parker

becoming MUCH more respectable!

Alex

Class sizes are usually small (25-30) and you get to know your teachers really well. I would like to think that the majority of my teachers in my upper level classes know my name but I wouldn't expect every teacher to know you, especially when you're taking entry level courses. My favorite/most unique class since I've been at CofC has been Historic American Interiors. It was an overview of various styles of domestic architecture, decoration and furniture. Personally, I do not study nearly as much as I should but the large majority of my friends do. I have never felt that I am competing for grades either. CofCs acedemic standards have gone up since I was a freshman. You can "coast" if you go to class but if you want to do well, you HAVE to do your assigned readings and homework assignments.

devin

Academics are like any other college, they are what you make them. There is nothing too spectacular about CofC academics but they're trying hard to change that. The school admin doesn't really seem to give a shit about their students but the professors are phenominal for the most part and I often found myself sitting in office hours just for the hell of it and leaving a class wondering why a teacher was at CofC! I have kept in touch with all of my "best" professors (5 in total!) and know that when I go back I will have to say "hi" to three of them, meet one at the bars and hunt down the last one to challenge him to original Nintendo which he will undoubtedly be playing in his office.

Katie

I've had varying experiences with my classes at CofC. For the most part, the classes are under 35 students, so the professors are able to learn everyone's names. My favorite classes have been my Education classes, probably because I'm an Education minor. I really enjoy the discussions that go along with these classes. CofC recommends 2 hours of study for every 1 hour of class, but I think this is ridiculous. That would mean, on average, 30 hours of studying and 15 hours of class every week... that's a full-time job! I'm not saying that studying isn't important, I just don't think 30 hours a week is necessary, at all! The Spanish department seems to have it together pretty well, with the exception of a few crazy professors. Most of the professors I've had were very accessible by email, and usually by office hours as well. I don't think the requirements at CofC are bad; go to class, do your work, study for tests. The only problem is that grades come with pluses and minuses. A 'B-' can hurt your GPA if your other grades are higher, but at other schools anything in the 80-range would be a 'B' and count the same towards your GPA.

Susanna

Acedemics are great at CofC...great reputation and helpful advisors

Joseph

Great professors and classes

Mary

I don't do homework and have above a 3.0

Amy

Class sizes are generally small (20-25 students) except for core classes that everyone must take to graduate (my biggest class ever was 110 and 2 professors conducted the class). It is a liberal arts college and that is obvious. Professors are generally helpful and care about CofC and the students; they are required to hold office hours, however many students do not take advantage of this.. the academic requirements are changing for the College, so I may as well not talk about them, but I have no complaints about my own experience. The education at CofC is geared toward being a well-rounded citizen. All types of schooling include a little bit of learning for learning's sake, but I feel like the professors/advisers provided to students genuinely care about the future of the students they mentor

Mike

C of C is a liberal arts school. This means that you can really take advantage of taking different types of classes before you jump into a major. They also offer a graduate program which allows you to continue you eduction.

jessica

most professors make a point to remember your name; all of them are usually extremely helpful and most are pretty laid back; really try and sink your teeth into some of the humanities courses they offer, which most schools don't stress importance of as much as college of charleston; philosophy is a great subject, super interesting, and so far every one of my philosophy professors has been cool as shit; depending on which classes you have, there really isn't that much need for studying, at least for me- some of my friends have to study a lot, but i think it just depends on the person; its way too hard for me to go to class every day, i mean, come on, the beach is like ten minutes away! but if teachers have an attendance policy i definitely make sure to go; i feel like many of my conversations are intellectual- most students at cofc are very down to earth and intelligent; i think that instead of pushing students towards obtaining a single career or typical corporate job, cofc really pushes students to take a broad range of subjects which really helps them figure out what they're interested in

Dani

Most professors knew my name. As a freshmen this was very helpful. Classes are challenging and most encourage students to speak up and contribute. Its obvious students come from all sorts of backgrounds, but overall students are intelligent and school is important but not their life. All professors have office hours and are willing to help out their students. Also there are no grad student teachers which is very helpful.

AimeeJo

I have absolutely loved all my professors so far. I've had big and small classes but they have all been great so far. I take mostly science classes for my MUSC prereqs and they have been challenging but professors are always encouraging and helpful.

James

Most of the classes that I have taken at C of C have been interesting. Be sure to look on Rate My Professor before taking certain classes because there are some professors that are not good at passing their knowledge off to their students. Many of the people I hang out with have many "In depth" conversations outside of class. These conversations usually include topics that they have learned from certain professors or what is currently being aired on CNN. Haha, the most unique class I have taken so far at C of C is Human Sexuality. The class isn't as perverted as I thought it would be. The knowledge I gained from the class was very interesting and helpful. I think that the Human Sexuality class should be required for all students to take.

Matthew

The professors at C of C will know your name if you wish them to. They are very smart and very cunning. Not an old school style; more of a modern twist and a new age cleverness.

Emmerson

Most of the classes are small, so usually professors will know your name if you go to class. My favorite class was intro to acting, I got a chacne to express myself. My least favorite class was english, but I am not a good writer(as this paragraph shows). Student's study in bursts, and a lot durring finals. Class participation is common or even required in some class. It is quite rare for cofc students to have intellectual conversations outside of class. Students aren't competitive, unless there is an ultimate frisbee game. I majored in math. It was a very intualectually stimulating experience. The math teachers are really nice and helpfull, most of the time, and will help you if you ask them. The department is kind of small, but the other people are friendly. C of C's academic requirments are their to keep the graduates well ballenenced, but I would say that CofC has a problem with preparing graduates for the real world.

Jordan

Class sizes are usually small. Most classes are not lecture halls. There have only been a few classes where the teachers did not know my name. Each teacher has office hours which are beneficial. Most classes will have some type of group assignment. Overall I've enjoyed most of my professors. The buildings are all pretty close to each other, so it is not hard to get from one side of campus to another. Many of the buildings are being fixed and updated. The business center is amazing and the School of Education just opened new teacher offices. The library is only 2 years old and is a great place to study. Outside of class students have intellectual conversations. With the 2008 election coming up, it is a common conversation, not to mention economy problems, and global warming. The most interesting class I have ever taken was geology. My teacher was funny and knew how to relate the information to the students in a fun manor. I am an education major. My professors are all amazing. They work to help each student. If I needed extra help I never felt intimidated to ask. They are dedicated to helping each student succeed. Since CofC is a liberal arts college there are certain requirement outside of your major that you must complete. I think it is a great way to try different areas and then chose what most interesting.

Torry

Excellent. We were told by numerous school district superintendents that if they had two applicants with the same qualifications, they would always pick the CofC applicant. Their graduates were better prepared for the workplace.

Emily

My biggest class my freshmen year was about 45 students. The professors know your name and care about whether or not you come to class. The students are extremely motivated not only in their studies but in issues outside of just the school. I have never experienced opportunities for activism and global awareness as I have about CofC. It is a school filled with compassionate students who are interested in the practical and contributory aspects of their education.

Jennifer

The academics at CofC can be a challenge. When I was going through orientation, I was told that there are no easy classes at CofC. They were right, you really have to work hard and be dedicated to your work. The class sizes were about average, although some classes were held in auditoriums. All my teachers knew my name and were very accessible through office hours and e-mail. Class participation was not very common in my classes. All the students, including myself, were not willing to participate. Many students can be heard continuing a class lecture outside of class, at Starbucks or Kudu Coffee. I like the challenges the academics at CofC have shown me, they are really preparing us for our future outside the college.

emily

Classes are about the same size as most high schools; on average my classes have about twenty to twenty-five people. The largest class I've ever had was a class of about fifty.

Alex

Favorite classes are Biology of Fishes taught by Dr. anthony harold. He is a fascinating teacher and is always willing to work with the students. Dr. Agnes southgate, who teaches genetics is very passionate about her work. Skip who teaches yoga is one of the best classes that enables the student to step outside of themselves and really learn who they are.

Alex

My favorite academic-related thing about CofC is its small class sizes. All of my professors have known my name, and I have known my classmates well. The research opportunities are endless!
