College of Charleston Top Questions

What are the academics like at your school?

Renee

Professors are awesome. This is one school where you actually feel like they care about you as a student. Professors here will do whatever it takes to get you to succeed. Class participation is common in most classes. The professors have office hours and are easily reached when needed either by way of e-mail or phone.

Devin

I can vouche for the competence of the Computer Science and Math departments. The science departments are good as well. The CS professors do their best to know the students first hand and a lot of opportunities are offered by the CS department. The only department I don't like is the business department, due to incompetent professors who either trail off subjects in class or just simply don't teach.

Chelsea

I am an education major, and I have learned so much while I've been here. Since the school is relatively small, I have made connections with my teachers (there arent 200 people in a class, so its easy to do!), and made a lot of friends. The thing here is people actually go to class- its not super competitive but people want to be there. I liked Womens studies.

Heather

At C of C the class size is usually about the same as a highschool class with about 25 people in each class. In some of my Honors classes, however, I have had classes as small as 9 people. Most teachers will call out students by name in class and if you participate in class or go to their office hours teachers certainly know your name and will talk to you on the street. I spend a good amount of time studying but students at C of C are pretty laid back and we like to do our studying outside whenever possible. I am majoring in Business Administration and Spanish and would recommend both departments to anyone. My Honors College classes, even though they are harder, are some of my favorite classes- like Honors Econ- because classes are less busy work and more about conversation over the topics at hand. As an honors student I also get to register for classes before most students which allows me to make my own schedule.

Aaron

Academics here are probably what most people look for because 4 out of 5 times the class is geared so you can get what ever you want out of it depending on what you put into it. The amount of required classes really bothers me, I just finished 4 required semesters of Spanish and I still don't know a damn word. I suppose if I really wanted to learn the language though, I could have. Classes are really small compared to other schools which is nice if you want to have a more personalized experience with your professor.

Dylan

All my professors have known my name, no matter what size the class is. All have offered extra help via office hours and other opportunities. Most of the classrooms are in older buildings. Classes are challanging but manageable if you work hard.

Jessi

Academics are awesome. There's a great business school and good premed. Anyone interested in studying art should definitely go there.

Nick

Professors will learn your names as the classes are not so big. You are not a number, but a person. They will also try to help you if you ask, but have to ask because they will not come to you. Some even enjoy you coming by and just talking. They like to get to know you, and if you form a good bond then they might help you out in the end. The process of getting your degree pushes you to the job you want to do. When you sit down with your advisor or your professors they will ask you what you want to do and even if you think its a far off and impossible dream, they can and will help you. They will tell you that life isn't about getting a job with a lot of money, but getting a job that you love doing

The academics here at C of C are beyond compare. Honestly, the classes are hard, and you do have alot of extra stuff you have to take because its a liberal arts college. But its worth it. I feel like my B was more rewarding then my friends A at Clemson. The professors really know who you are. Even in my largest class (biology- 120 seats) the teacher knew her students, and had a way for us to get into smaller groups outside of class to make sure we understood the material. I am a bio major and have to say that the teachers i have had in this department and the other departments truely LOVED what they were teaching. They were honestly passionate about their subject and wanted the students to have that same passion.

Elizabeth

There's such a diversity of classes on campus that no matter what subject you take, there's bound to be a teacher you admire or a group of students that help you understand the big picture. You learn just as much from your classmates as you do from the classroom lectures, perhaps even more so, since everyone has a fresh perspective to contribute. The professors themselves are the most amazing group of people because they sincerely care about their students' well being, even outside of the classroom. The most unique aspect about CofC is that it gears its students to learn what they can so that they can apply it to any field they choose to pursue in the future.

Alex

I know all of my professors by name and they all know me by name. Even after I am done with a professors class for a semester, we still communicate whenever we see each other. It's always good to know your professors and for them to know you. My favorite classes are usually classes within my majors. Class participation is strongly encouraged in my major classes. Students are always studying. I feel like it goes on non-stop. I usually spend office hour time with my professors outside of class. Sometimes, I e-mail or call them if I have questions, etc. They are always readily accessible. I feel that many of the academic requirements are unnecessary, especially if they are not associated with your major(s)/minor(s). Education at CofC is geared toward both learning and getting a career, instead of a job. CofC is known as the school that wants its students to be well-rounded.

Megan

I'm in an Exercise Science concentration with hopes of becoming a Physical Therapist. The professors are so knowledgeable in the field and you have MUSC right here in Charleston if you are pursuing a medical career.

Mallory

I was very impressed at the small class sizes even in freshman classes. All of the professors are available for help anytime and they seem to genuinely want you to do well! I also feel challenged without being overwhelmed and consumed by schoolwork 100{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the time.

Taylor

Professors are awesome! very personal, first name basis if you even speak once in the class. Profs make it a clear point the first week to learn everyones name. Profs are very student friendly-usally sit on the front desk or just somewhere casual while teaching, instead of looking like they are giving a national speech behind a desk. CofC students are considered to be some of the most intelligent students in SC. Very respectable academics in the view of MUSC, Chas School of Law, and other grad schools. Students are very competitive---ex. student government (seaton and morgan) Most classes are very difficult, but you feel that you gain something from them at the end of the semester, great feeling! Overall, you get your moneys worth!$!

Ash

All of my professors know my name. Some of my professors have come up to me and suggested internships and projects with which i can get CV boosters or grants. I have met up with professors after class to get coffee and talk about various things. The professors here love to help out students lookign for guidance. They will offer to help out students without thinking twice. The political science department is amazing. Some great professors from experienced backgrounds. I am also a biology major and the bio department is fantastic too. The science departments here are tough... so be prepared. However, you will learn a whole lot and come out with research opportunities and great CV builders.

Alex

The professors are great, they know everyone by name. This isn't possible in you are in a first level biology class with about 100 students! My favorite class was African American Women 20th century history! The college hired a visiting distiguish professor to teach the class. Her name is Darlene Clark Hines. She wrote many books that were publish by the Harvard Publishing company. Students study alot here, the library is always full, except on Friday evenings and afternoons. C of C academic requirements are very strict, but they help you to adjust and follow the requirements.

Lauren

The academics at CofC are challening, and you will rarely find a teacher that is just going to give away grades. I'm unsure how much a study in a week, but before a test I usually will have to study 4 to 5 hours that paticular test. I'm a Business major and these deparment is some what hard to declare a major in. On top of general education class you must complete you also have to take 7 business courses before you can declare a major and begin taking any 300 level courses. The only thing I was dissapointed with at Charleston was I didn't understand what a liberal arts school really was until I got to Charleston. I find at Charleston you are requried to take more general education classes than in other schools. For example most of my friends at other schools only have to take 2 semesters of a forgien language, while I have to take four to graduate.

Michelle

Professors can really get to know you if you so wish. The health classes rock, really was interested in my social science classes. Students will study a lot if needed, the library is amazing for that. Not all students carry intellectual conversations, most of the ones I hear are who's sleeping w who, what parties are going on, relationship drama, and party plans. However, there are exceptions, mainly honor's students, who can and love to have real conversations. Not a lot of competition among students as far as I can tell. The most unique class I took was Concepts of the Body and Disease: from a medical historian and philosopher standpoint. Professors are easily accessible. Education (unless you're an ed or business major) is geared toward learning for learning's sake, not a job.

Bobby

I could not be happier with the level of academia here at the College. The teachers are all so well educated and really know there stuff. Not to mention, many of the professors do research in addition to their lectures. The best part about the teachers here is that they came here to teach first, and make sure that their students succeed. The largest class I had, and will ever have, is 70 students which was my intro biology courses. It ended up feeling a lot smaller than it sounds, because of the study groups that were formed for studying for our exams.

Lauren

My professors definitely know my name! I like walking into class, and they greet you as you walk in. My favorite class was English 313 where basically the entire class was led by class discussions-- we took that class to places you would not even believe! Class participation does vary from class to class. I also love it that I can go drop by a professor's office and hang out whenever I want to. Their open door policy is AMAZING! The courses can get rigorous, but they are worth it.... just watch out for accounting. It will hurt your GPA.

Stephanie

Classes are usually small. I have had classes that average around 20-30 and one lecture class that had 60-70.

Jen

Classes are smaller than most colleges, I really like it though. Professors really do care about you and work with you to succeed at the college. It's nice walking into a professor's office and they know you by name and what class you're in. The business school is very helpful, but I hate that it takes forever to finish classes and be able to declare your major.

Laura

My favorite class this semester was Intro to Acting, THTR 277 with Brent Laing. It's the most fun I've ever had in class.

Elana

Most of the classes I have taken are small enough where student participation is very important

Matthew

Some very good professors here. It is a school getting better and better in academics each year. Many of my classes have been quite small, less than 15 or 20. However, you generally need to find the right people to have an intellectual conversation with, not everyone is good for that here.

Lucy

Classes can be as easy or as hard as you make them, you can slack off and get decent grades but it is easy to challenge yourself by taking difficult classes or just striving for the best grades.

Ann-Marie

I feel like our school is very challenging and students put alot of effort into their work. Alot of students here are very intelligent. I, personally never skip class because many teachers take attendence and that helps your grade. And if you do skip class often, you'll fail which is unlike the larger universities.

Amy

Academics are good. My classes have been well balanced and I haven't had any impossible ones, although Calculus has definitely been a challenge. Class participation is common. The classes aren't enormous like at some of the larger schools, which is nice. Some people hate the general education requirements, but I think they really do help to make us more well rounded. Gen ed requirements can be a pain, but they're not as bad as people make them out to be. They're not typically very hard.

Katie

the academic atmosphere at our school is somewhat relaxed. teachers are very helpful and willing to give you advice on your future careers. I think the school is somewhat geared towards getting a job, rather than learning for learning's sake, but this is a good thing since that's basically the purpose of college.

Alyson

School is very important and all classes even electives are rigorous.

Melissa

When I was looking at schools, the class size was always mentioned. At the time I really didn't think it made that much of a difference. I now see that it makes a huge difference. Smaller class size makes it much easier for students and professors to form a relationship. Professors at CofC are extremely helpful and care a lot about your future and want you to understand the material they are teaching. As much as I dislike my general education classes, I think it's important to be well-rounded. The most unique class I've taken is Event Management Practicum with Dr. Canberg. The whole class is focused on planning and executing an event. For a class with no lectures or tests, I've learned so much in this class.

Michelle

I love the small class sizes. Most all of my professors learn my name and are so helpful during office hours. The library is also an awesome resource with a lot of helpful people and things like the Center for Student Learning. I am in the honors college, so my requirements are a little different but I definately feel that CofC is challenging academically and is standard for the requirements for a liberal arts school. I am a biology major and within my major I have gotten to know people through common classes. This is an advantage of the smaller class sizes because we can help each other out with studying and problems, etc

Leila

I think that academically Charleston is a lot better than people give it credit for. The Honors College is pretty demanding, with a lot of requirements such as a 12 credit hour history class and a bachelor's essay. The students aren't very competitive from what i've seen so far. A lot of the education is just for education's sake, especially in the Honors College.

Alissa

Some of my professors take the time to learn their students names, while others don't even try to learn our names. My favorite class is Business Calculus, which most people would say is their least favorite. It's my favorite because I LOVE math. I get really excited when I figure out the right answer or when I finally understand something. I feel it's gratifying. My least favorite class in Economics. I've had the hardest time in this class, and I don't understand why. I feel you either understand it or you don't. And if you don't understand it, than you're S.O.L. In my opinion students study a lot. The library is always very very busy, it's so hard to find on open table or desk. Class participation depends on the class. If the teacher makes it fun or if it is a class that the student enjoys, they will participate a lot more. Hmmm, intellectual conversations outside of class are very rare in what I've seen. Most people don't talk about class once their class is over. All students are competitive, you always want to do better than the person sitting next to you. The most unique class that I've ever taken would probably be HISTORY OF POPULAR MUSIC IN THE MODERN DAY! I really enjoyed it and found it interesting. My major is Business Administration with a Concentration in Marketing. I am just starting to take classes that are a part of my major. I met with an advisor in the business center, and I absolutely love her, and she is getting me really excited about the years to come. I have never really spent time with my professors outside of class. I've met up with English professor from freshman year, she helped me with my resume. I have tutoring with a professor, but she is not my professor. I think the fact that we have to take four semesters of a foreign language is a little silly, but hey that's just my opinion.

Grace

CofC offers some classes that are so intersting and unique. I love the wide range of curriculum. The professors in general are great resources. I'm double majoring in French and Spanish and I have found that both of these departments have dedicated faculty that are really concerned for the best interests of the students.

Melanie

Most of my professors do know my name, because class sizes are small (around 30 people). There is a lot of work, like other colleges, and there are always people in the library. We do have "labs" for math, reading, writing, and foreign language which are for appointments or walk-ins. The people that work in the labs are amazing and willing to help you on anything and everything whether it is making your english paper better or understanding how to do a math problem.

Paige

All professors know the studens name. Professors are all friendly and willing to awnser questions.

Lauren

Professors definitely tend to know your name, even in the huge lecture classes. My favorite class has been Fiction Writing. It was set up as a writing workshop and was a great experience. Your stories themselves weren't graded, but everyone in the class gave constructive criticism. My least favorite class was Math 250, higher level statistics, but I was told I should take it for grad school and then I couldn't understand the professor because of his accent and I had no previous experience with statistics. The library is generally pretty busy with students studying, and you'll be hard pressed to find a seat during final time. Class participation is common, and many professors have part of their grading dependent on participation. I've noticed a fair share of debate and intellectual conversations outside of class. Students are very concerned with national issues. The most unique class I will take is the psychology of mental health and relationships. I think it will be really helpful for future relationships. Psychology is a great major here. All of the professors in the psych department are very helpful and willing to work with you no matter what you need. The classes tend to require a lot of reading but it's all very interesting (though dry since it's all textbook reading). I personally don't spend time with professors outside of class, but I know that they all have office hours and encourage students to come talk to them if they have any issues. CofC's academic requirements are fairly reasonable, though some of the department requirements are tough. I decided not to take a Biology major based on the required classes for that major. The education system itself is geared at getting a job, with lots of help in getting internships and study abroad experiences, but I am here to learn for its own sake.

Emily

The education here is definitely geared toward learning for its own sake, at least in my experience. I don't think a professor has ever said anything in relation to getting a job to me, unless I prompted it. That being said, I will probably never have a good paying job! My case is unique as I am a French major--all my classes are small, the professors have been at the school for 20 years, I know all my classmates. The most unique experience I have had in the classroom was an honors seminar about Wal Mart and the effects of globalization on the world's population.

Casey

Professors are the best part of academics at CofC. Professors know your name and are easily available outside of class. They have office hours set aside specifically to meet with students. There's a great variety of classes, including fun ones like social dancing! Many of the professors are really down to earth and love to get to know the students on more than an academic level.

Allison

Some of my professors know my name. I've had some of them more than once now, and some of my classes are pretty small. I am currently in 4 classes this semester, and with the exception of one lower level accounting class which is in a lecture hall, my class size is around 30 max.

Jordan

I love the class size and how each professor knows your name. I think that science classes are harder to get to know the professor unless you make an effort to get to know your professor. I love the variety of classes available and how COFC is a liberal arts school. The science department here is very difficult but if you study enough, you will do fine.

Shelby

Cofc just got credited with Ivy League status academic wise, but does not have the money to completely become an Ivy League school. The Academics are great and very diverse. This is a great school for science, hospitality and business, and education.

Lauren

I am in the Honors College so two out of my six courses this semester are with other Honors students; these classes are a little more difficult and a bit more personal. However, in all of my classes, the teacher knows my name. I have not taken lecture classes yet, however. The professors are very knowledgeable and passionate in their fields. They like to teach and this makes the subject matter more interesting. I really like the teachers here. One thing that bugs me in some of my classes is that students don't ask all that many questions. This was a surprise to me coming from a liberal high school right outside of Boston, Massachusetts. I have not spent much time with professors outside of class, but I have gone to a couple of my professors' office hours to seek help. They always offer opportunities to talk about anything a student is concerned about. Students definitely have intellectual conversations outside of class, but once again, I am in the Honors College so I have an experience that's a bit different.

Alex

the library is very popular! i really like a lot of my professors. class size tends to be fairly small. we are a competitive school academically.

Kristen

most professors know the names of their students. favorite class= health class. least favorite=history. Students study most nights of the week. There is always class participation. Most unique class=theatre. My major is Physical Education, Health Promotions. I dont spend time with my prof.outside of class. All my health classes help with future careers and areas of interest.

Abby

Most professors will know your name if you talk to them at least once one on one. My favorite classes are those with the human body such as anatomy/physiology. Students are competitive, but its an unconscious race. I feel like the academic requirements are too low for CofC. They need to be raised to justify the high academic teachings it offers.

Megan

Professors know my name and remember it semesters afterwards. I feel like students really do study a lot, even though of the party school stereotype. I really feel like the school does a lot for helping students get internships and jobs.

Katie

For the most part professors know you name, but there's the occasional really large lecture class where they don't know ANYONE. Class participation is always encouraged; the professors like to hear what you have to say.

Rachel

Certain professors and departments are better than others. Communication and Business have a lot of great professors who have a lot of real world experience it just may take a little investigation and experience to figure who fits your learning style the best. Getting the basic introductory classes out of the way fast is the best way to open yourself up to the more specific classes.
