Academics at COFC are definitely something to brag about. All of my professors know my name and class participation is a big part of my classes. My favorite class has been anatomy with Prof. Pringle. Shannon

All of my professors know me by name, and the small class sizes make learning much easier and more personal. Because of the small class sizes, class participation is always necessary and very common.

Stephanie

The professors at CofC are top-notch. I went to a very good public school, and the teachers here rival those. Every one of my teachers knows my name and uses it both in class and when they see me on the street. They are incredibly helpful and really want us to succeede. For example, I am not a math person, and my Calculus teacher stayed up with a few of us till 1:00 am helping us before the exam.

Some professors are amazing, some are awful, and some in between. I think we have great professors, but not a ton of them. When class participation matters, there is a lot of it. Some professors have had a dinner outside of class, but as I said before not many. It would be nice if all professors were open with their students. It makes class easier and more fun when you know your professor better.

Sarah

Most our professors know our names. They care about our education as much as we do. The education at CofC is geared towards getting a job and getting a all-around great liberal arts education.

Andrea

Classes are relatively small, promoting a very intimate learning environment for teachers and students. Professors know their students by name and are always willing to meet with students after class. I have actually had a professor invite me to her house for dinner! Many classes are discussion style, which just means that about 10 students sit in a circle and discuss the learning material for that day rather than just sitting through a lecture. This class style encourages healthy debates and challenges students to think for themselves.

Hunter

Most professors do know your names. Least favorite class - Marketing 302 with Blose. Favorite class - History 102 with Boucher. My favorite class has been History 103 & 104. I've had the same professor twice and he's wonderful. My least favorite class has been Accounting. It's so hard and the teacher isn't that helpful! Both departments are extremely close and I've developed a lot of great relationships.

Yes, professors know names. they even make an effort to get to know you. My favorite class is psychology. my professor makes it so much fun and is really enthusiastic about teaching. My least favorite class is spanish. I actually really enjoy spanish and im really good at it but the professor is just so bitter towards the world and didn't enjoy teaching so it wasn't interesting. I personally study ALOT. I spend a ton of time in the library. The majority of the students study maybe once a week. charleston is known for partying. class participation is a huge part of your grade in most classes because the class sizes are so small. my biggest class was a bio lecture of about 60 students. students DO NOT have intellectual conversation outside of class. I am in the honors fraternity and yeah there are some nerds but nothing too intellectually stimulating. Students are NOT competitive. The academic requirements are really easy to fulfill minus the 12 humanity credits you have to fill, except i believe they are lowering them in the next few years. i think professors just care about you being knowledgeable, not necessarily in the work world.

Sam

Most professors are great about knowing everyone's names! The comm. dept. is GREAT! All of my professors are willing to help and are friendly. Econ was my least fav. class! It royally kicked my ass! Class participation just depends on the class. Most of the academic requirements are ok...12 hours of a foreign language suck though unless you are into that sort of thing. I did really well in all of them though. CofC def. wants to prepare you for the real world after school.

Alex

Once again, due to the size of the classes, my professors always know my name. My favorite class, thus far, has been a german special topics class; however, out of 79 credit hours, I've only disliked one class (Biology 101-Professor Massie). Class participation is crucial in the classes at C of C. Professors want us to discuss everything and anything. They want students to engage in conversation and to bring different, current ideas into the class material (as long as it's related).

Megan

Most of my professors do know my name. One great thing about CofC is that the class sizes are small, very much comparable to what you experience in a high school. One of my favorite classes was a yoga class that I just took for fun, it ended up being a great stress reliever in a busy semester. Class participation is not only common, but pretty much demanded by the professors. Students here are very competitive, and I feel that CofC's academic requirements are very reasonable. CofC is definitely geared towards its students getting a job upon graduation, the career center is very helpful.
