What is your overall opinion of this school?

Alex

i wish we had a football team. i love living in the city and near the beach. it's the perfect amount of students.

Kristen

The best thing is how friendly the students, faculty, and staff are. CofC has a beautiful and warming campus. I'd improve the facilities on campus...slowly this is happening. It is just right it terms of size. People are interested when they find out I go to CofC and think it is a really great place. I spend most of my time in the classrooms, stern center, and library. Definitely a college town...but has a lot more to offer than just that! CofC's administration is great and very helpful. School pride could be improved....but getting better. Student complaints- classrooms too small, not enough courses offered, too much construction, not enough parking.

Abby

Our school is a good size. It is big enough to where you can not see someone you know but at the same time can run into a friend on the street. There are many organizations and clubs to get involved in. There is a moderate amount of school pride, it'd be better if we had a football team. Its awesome being in downtown charleston. There is always something to do and only a 20 min drive to the beach. CofC has an excellent biology department with very skilled and knowledgable professors.

Megan

The best things about CofC is the location and academics. Charleston is a great city and academics are some of the best in the state. Some programs are even nationally ranked. One thing I would change is how lame our school website/webserves/email is. It's awful! I wish CofC was just a little bit larger. I do not think that there is a lot of school pride. A cool fact most people don't know is that the College of Charleston is actually a Colonial college because we were founded in 1770, or before the United States became a country. Students hate hate hate the email server!!!!!

Katie

A lot of students complain about the Residence and Life Housing policies, however, for the most part they are just trying to look out for the student's well-being. I love that C of C is right in the middle of downtown; you don't have to have a car to go to all the places you need to go- you can just walk there.

Carson

I love how our school is in a historic city and it is right downtown around all of the action. Close to the beach and the water is also a big attribute to why this city and college is so great. Seeing the history as I walk to class every day inspiring. Our school pride is shown, but not in the same way as say Clemson or USC's is shown by football. Our pride is in sense of self and just how we live our day-to-day lives. When people hear me say that I go to school here, their response is almost always along the lines of, "How amazing!"

Lizzie

This school is just the right size. I love how I can go around campus and recognize students that I have never met. The class size is perfect. I would change the parking problem and stop making the school bigger. I spend most of my time on campus in class and doing activities with ZTA. I haven't had any recent controversies on campus. I do not think there is enough school pride at COFC. One experience i will always remember is living in the dorms. One of the most frequent complaints are PARKING and safety. The administration at COFC is fabulous. The professors I have had have been amazing.

Shannon

The best thing about CofC is definitely the location. We are located right in the middle of historic downtown Charleston, and constatly surrounded by beauty and history. The school is relatively small with roughly 10,000 undergrads, and sometimes I do wish it were a little bigger.

margaret

CofC is a great size! That is a huge plus-not too big, not too small. I also love that is it right in the city. We don't really have campus life much because it is in a city. I think that is just what happens because of the location. I have never lived in the dorms, because they filled up. I didn't get the normal freshman lifestyle everyone else got. I wish they would give freshman first pick on dorms, so all freshman can get housing, then open it up to everyone else. That is my biggest complaint.

Sarah

The best thing about the College of Charleston is that it's not too small but it's not too big. It's the perfect size and everyone seems to know someone who knows someone. One thing I would change about the college is the interior of some of the classrooms. When I tell people I go to the College of Charleston I either hear, "That's a fun town" or "That's a great school." This place is definitely a college town and there's a lot of school pride here. I spend most of my time on campus in the Simons Center of the Arts. I'm a studio art major so the dark room is very time consuming. The faculty and staff are great! The most recent controversy on campus was the "almost impeachment" of our SGA Vice President.

Andrea

The size is just perfect, not too big, not too small. Charleston is a vacation destination for many people, so it is cool to live in a place other people are only lucky enough to visit. The beach is 10 minutes away, and on the weekends the campus is deserted due to all the beach bums and surfers who couldn't get to the beach fast enough after class on Friday afternoon. The downtown atmosphere is nice because there is always something to do within walking distance.

Ryan

This school is the perfect size, you always see friends and people that you know around campus, but at the same time, you constantly meet new people. People have either not heard of us, or they are extremely jealous of us. Being right by the beach and enjoying the perfect, year-round weather makes the atmosphere laid back and relaxing. Being in the middle of a city makes it easy to party every day of the week, especially since there are bars on every block, but at the same time, it's not hard to study if you need to get work done.

Hunter

Best thing about C of C is the atmosphere. City feel with the beach ten minutes away. Great party school and awesome bar scene. I would change the hiring of liberal teachers. Great size. People tell me they are jealous when I tell them they go to C of C. Most of my time on campus is at the cafeteria, which is new. There is about zero school pride. Maybe 400 people will go to basketball games out of 10,000. I'll always remember my friends.

Cody

The College of Charleston is not about the College, it is about Charleston. The school thrives as a part of the city within the bars, local shops, and cultural scene. Don't come here if you are looking for the typical college town because you'll get a lot more! Remember it's the friendliest city in the US (five years in a row now!) and you will see a ton of tourists!

Brooke

The computer system and webmail is always messed up!

sara

The best thing about CofC is the location and the history involved in the city and with the school. I would change the parking situation, adding more of it. School size is perfect. People react to CofC by asking how I am graduating, because it is very hard to juggle all the school work and the distractions, beach and bars. On campus I spend most time in the library. This is a town with a college wrapped in it, the city is tied in with the school and vice versa. The administration seems to be there to help the students, in whatever way possible. The biggest recent controversy was probably the drilling for new buildings, it makes so much noise especially during exams, or it could be raising the printing fines. Not a ton of school pride, no football team. I would say our student body is pretty unusual, the extremes of characters. Also, how conservative the state is but how liberal the college is. I'll always remember going into class and having students not wearing shoes, while the next one by them have Gucci bags and are friends. Most frequent complaints are parking, no football team, and not enough advertising of school sports, and of course too much school work.

Toby

Cofc's advising is horrible!!! I like most of the teachers and they are VERY helpful most of the time when you need them. I do not feel that there is a much school pride as I would want us to have. I wish I went to a school where everyone liked going to the basketball games and baseball games.

Kelly

The best thing about College of Charleston is the small classroom and the teacher to student ratio. I feel as though I am not just a number in a class. My professors know my name and care about me learning material. They are not out to fail me. They want to see my succeed. I think CofC is the perfect size. It's big enough to continue to meet people everyday but also small enough to see your friends walking around campus. College of Charleston is also shaped a lot by the city of Charleston. There is always something to do and many people stay in the area because of the many job opportunities. I wouldn't call Charleston a "college town" but the city more or less shapes the College and it's diversity. There isn't much school pride because athletics are not huge. The biggest change I would make at CofC would be adding a football program. Not only would that give more students pride in the school it would also draw more students to the College.

Sarah

The environment and location in Charleston. I wish we had a football team. I think cofc is the perfect size because it is not too small but it gives individuals attention with smaller class sizes but our school is large enough to give the big campus feel. They have heard of Charleston and think that is nice but typically haven't heard of cofc. I spend most of my time on campus in the stern center or library. I think its a college town. I think cofc administration is very good. I think there is some student pride but there should be more. It is unusual that our cofc campus is right in the heart of Charleston and many that are unfamiliar with the town can miss it.

Hunter

The best thing about CofC would have to be the city. Cofc is right in the heart of charleston and there are so many great shops and restaurants to enjoy. Also, it is 15 min from the beach. I would change the weather. I actually like the cold and it gets to a point where its unbearably hot to go outside. Cofc is the perfect size. When I tell people that I go to Cofc, I either hear "wow you are so lucky to be in such an amazing city" or "ohhhh... the party school of the south." I spend a ton of time in the library (its gorgeous! and a great place to study) and on King Street, either shopping or just walking around with friends. CofC is the ideal college town! ITS AMAZING!. I don't know much about the administration. There is next to no school pride. i mean i guess there is a little, people where cofc clothing all the time but other than that.... no school spirit. One thing i will always remember is the sensitivity of the fire alarms in the dorms. they literally go off even if you are taking a really hot shower. the steam sets them off. one thing about the school is that the retention rate is really low. a ton of kids transfer out after first or second semester

Sam

I'm just going to list some stuff: The best thing about CofC is that it is near the beach. If I could change anything, I wish our school had more school spirit. CofC is just the right size...same size classes as my h.s. pretty much. Most of my time spent on campus was either in class or in my room (when I lived on campus). Charleston is def. a college town which is great for us. You can walk to just about anywhere you need to go (car is still a must just bc though). Parking sucks though because freshmen don't have parking privileges, and when you do it costs a fortune. The administration at CofC is good... I liked most all my teachers (expect for one which I helped start a petition to have fired...she is still here so NEVER take Prof. Massie for Bio.!!!!) Oh, if it rains....you need rain boots...and stay away from the edge of the sidewalk when a car drives by unless you like getting wet.

Alex

I feel that our college is just the right size. By all means, I do not know everyone here; however, my classes rarely exceed 25 to 30 students. Charleston is definitely a "college town." We have four colleges within a 30 minute radius of city: C of C, the Citadel, Charleston Southern, and Trident Technical College. When everyone heads home for Christmas, the city is dead. Charleston is a city primarily running off of the college students and tourists. Due to this advantage, there are always jobs to be filled and always internships to apply for! The campus is right in the middle of the city, so it's hard to say where most of my time is spent on campus. I like it this way; it allows me to never get bored. My favorite study places are the Cistern (where students walk across to graduate), Waterfront Park (a 15 minute walk from campus, overlooking the Ravenel Bridge, the marsh, and the water), and the Addlestone Library (the college's new library, including a coffee shop, three levels, computer levels, and an entire outside park for students).

Megan

One of the best things about CofC is the intimate student body. I think that around 10,000 students is a great number, because it's not small enough that you feel stifled, but it's small enough that you pass by the same people everyday going to class. Not to mention it's in a wonderfully beautiful, historic, and fun town, where you will never run out of activities to do. I guess you could say that Charleston is a good mix between a college town and a tourist attraction. We inhibit the town during the academic year, and come summer the tourists take over. Most people react positively when I tell them that I go to CofC, but before I came down as a freshmen, everyone I told that I was going here reacted by saying "it's just a party school". If I'm not in the library I spend most of my time in the downtown area, we normally go to King St. or the Market to go out to eat or to the bars. For the most part, CofC administration is very helpful in aiding you in whatever way they can. I can't really think of a huge controversy other than the school was thinking about changing our graduation from the Cistern on campus, which is where it has always traditionally been, to the North Charleston Coliseum, which thankfully did not happen. One frequent student complaint is the loud construction that is being done right across from the library.
