What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Kristen

If I could go back in time, I would assure myself that I would be just fine. All I have to do to succeed in school is to stay focused and work hard. I would make sure that I am well prepared in time management and I learn not to procrastinate. I would tell myself to get a little more involved on campus and to have a lot of school spirit in order to make my stay an enjoyable one. I should also be very sociable in order to make connections with people and form study groups. Accademically, I came into FIU well prepared for college, so my main message to myself would simply be to enjoy my college career, but at the same time work very hard, never give up, never settle for average, and go above and beyond all expectations.

Charnice

The advice that I would give myself is to not be scared! I can do anything that I set my mind to and no goal is to high to be reached! Just try my hardest and give my school work my all. If I need help or question something, do not be afraid or embarrased to ask questions; there are no dumb questions except for the ones that go unasked. Also I would say to no let obstacles get in my way, and to not get discouraged when things are not looking up.

Keith

If i could go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior, the first thing I would tell myself is not to wait three years before you go back to school. I would also tell myself that his dreams can come true, and all he has to do is put his mind to the test. Also the world is not how he makes it to be, but so much better, and also the transition itself is easier than it seems. All he has to do, is to not think that he is not smart enough for college. Last but far from least is that if he keeps at playing paintball the transition will be so much easier because it puts his mind at ease, and that his older brother will be so enthused at his younger brother that it makes him feel envious and wants to go along for the ride. It will be the highlight of both of our lives.

Ernesto

The advise i would offer myself given the chance to go back in time, would problaby be to work for atleast a year and save up as much money as possible so that i could just focus on school. The transition to college life is a difficult one for most when it comes to money. Most parents cannot afford to pay for college, specially during the economic crisis the country is going through. I was able to manage going to school full time and working full time but only for a few months, then i had to change jobs once i had saved what i needed. So this will problaby be the best advice i would give myself if that golden opportunity ever presented itself.

Stephanie

I'd tell myself to not take anything in life for granted and to follow my future dreams to the fullest. Your time in college is what you make out of it and it isn't based on what other people expect from you. In college, you control your present and your future. I'd tell myself to stay focused as much as possible and never lose sight to what I want. In college, I learned that the freedoms of adulthood and being a college student can lead a person astray; so I'd tell myself to be careful, but to also not be afraid of opening up to new opportunities and enjoy life as much as possible. For my high school self, I'd tell her to learn everything she can about the people around her, the responsiblities of being an adult, and what it means to work hard.

Michelle

If I could go back I would say "Study hard, take advantage of the FREE education. Don't give up. Learn as much as you can. Stick to a sport and excel at it. Excel in all classes. There is absolutely no reason for you to fail. ASK FOR HELP WHEN YOU NEED IT. Studying really isn't that bad. Read, read, read. DO NOT slack. DO NOT procrastinate. Listen to your teachers. Be happy. Throughly enjoy this year because it's your last easiest ride. Write a lot. Write, write, write. Academically, of course. Be true to yourself. When you get to college and even now. The first and foremost thing to do is to just BELIEVE in yourself. And, be free." to myself.

Nicole

Being able to go back in time would certainly help my college experience tremendously. The first thing I would probably tell myself would be to continue being a hardworker because once you get to college noone cares about your success anymore. It is up to you to do all of your assignments and make time to study. No one is going to be around to force you turn in any assignments and if you fail no one will care. It seems harsh but that's the way it is in college. It is just like the real world, you have to fight for what you want and go after it. Make time to allow yourself to study. There are very minimal assignments in most classes and there is not enough time or money to say you will do better next time. I honestly believe hard work and responsibility are the two key components in surviving in college. Once you reach college you are independent and have to make a life of your own. In order to succeed you must do the work and put in the effort. Work hard and success will follow wherever you go.

Alyssa

There are so many things that you learn as you experience college, that you would never know as a highschool student. If I could go back in time I would try to tell myself many things, but honestly I don't think anyone could understand college untill they live it and experience it for themselves. College is a wonderful time in our lives, and the most important thing tomake the transition into college easier would be to find a balance in life. Academics are certainly important, but it's not all about the grades you receive, but about what you learn, what you experience, and what you gain from the knowledge and experience that comes with college. For one, you learn to depend on yourself, in addition to working with others. I would also try to explain to myself that there is no need to be scared to get involved; the sooner you get involved the better. Furthermore, it is not necesarry to be involved in everything, but to be involved in something.

Katherine

If I could go back in time, I would have had more motivation in raising my gpa in high school in order to qualify for scholarships. I now have to resort to taking out loans as a way of paying off my college tuition. I went through many family problems during high school when my mother got breast cancer but I now realize that it should have been my motivation to put my all into studying in order to be sucessful and bring a better life to myself and my family.

Sherly

If I could go back in time to when I was a high school senior, I would make sure that I focused on my school work instead of all the fun activities that was happening senior year. My advice to myself would be to do scholarships because if I had done as much scholarships as my teachers were advising me to do, I wouldn't be in the situation that I currently am. I would also advice myself to actually learn the materials that were being taught in class because if I had taken the time to learn materials from AP biology, math and english I wouldn't be struggling as much as I am now in classes that are similar to them. Another thing I would have advised myself is to study for the SAT and ACT because if I had done that I would have gotten a better score and would have been able to receive the 100{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} bright futures scholarship and other scholarships. I was a fool not to have taken my senior year in high school seriously but my playing around days are over now that I am in college.

Brittni

If I could go back to when I was a high school senior, I would drill into my skull that my mother was right about my exboyfriend. I was raised by a single mother. As a teenager and young adult, I tended to break her heart often due to my state of mind. If there is anything I could change I would change the way I treated my mother. When I was a senior in high school, I dated this boy that my mother did not approve of. The day I turned eighteen I moved out of my house and withdrew myself from my school. I moved to where he lived and enrolled in his school. I changed my number, when my mother got home all she had was four walls and a cake for aperson who couldn't be found. If I could go back, I would change that day. I would tell myself that she was right about Darren. I remind her everyday what a wonderful woman she is, has been, and will always be. And I will tell her everyday how much I love her, and how sorry I am for the pain I have caused her.

Reymundo

If I could go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior the advise I would give is to learn how to manage my time. Looking back at my time in high school I realize that I could have done so much more academically and financially if I had only learned to manage my time correctly. Now that Im older I have come to the realization that it is never too early to prepare for the future. I used to think that I wouldnt have to take a loan until law school but due to changes in the economy my family had to take out a loan just so I could attend the spring semester. In closing my high school self should learn to manage his time and to make the most out of it as well. I once thought that high school would never end and now im a junior in college. The time to prepare for the future is now.

Martha

Dear Martha, I know that you are gutwrenchingly nervous right now. Don't worry, architecture is where you are supposed to be. It will teach you discipline, enrich your creativity and give you the self-confidence to take chances and nurture your own ideas. That is why you will eventually leave it. Because while architecture is considered the most practical of artistic careers, while it was the result of all those career/interest assessments you have taken in hope of being given some direction, it is not for you and you will eventually choose your own. That is where I'm writing you from today. Go forth with all that you have, always. It is so important that you embrace the experience because the more that you give to it, the more you will be able to take with you. Do not forget that education should not be about taking simple classes to boost your GPA, but rather about cultivating yourself and allowing yourself to fall in love with new ideas and knowledge.

Amelia

First of all, do not procrastinate, studying is the key to excelling in college. Making friends was never easy for you, but enjoy the few you make and create a long lasting bond. Time and money management is also something to work on. Keep your grades up because if you lose your scholarship, dealing with the out of pocket payments are very stressful, especially when it's coming from someone that's coming from a low income family. Keep your chin up and don't let one bad grade keep you down. Work hard and achieve all of your endeavours.

Bryttany

If I could go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior with the knowledge of college life I would definitely have numerous amounts of inspirational thoughts and suggestions to lead me in the right direction, but the most important fact of them all would be to stay focused. College life allows students to find themselves, giving them freedom to do things at their own pace. I would tell myself the most important key to graduating college would definitely be to stay focused. There are many things that can distract you to make you stray away from your path to success. I would tell myself to remember that education comes first and to never give up. Some classes, professors, and your social life could possibly make you want to give up, but you should always remember that success is the key to life. In order to be successful, you must stay focused and be the best that you can be to follow your dreams. It is very easy to get side tracked but remember the more focused you are the more knowledgable you become and the faster you lead yourself to success.

Michael

A high school education is offered to us free of charge with the power in our hands to take full advantage of the available resources that could lead to a sturdy foundation and springboard into college. A student that has not taken advantage of the resources will be unprepared for the tremendous challenges that lie ahead. Relecting back, it is almost a crime to not fully utilize what is available to us at no charge and to position ourselves in the strongest fashion for the start of our college years. In this light, every high school student ought to take full advantage of honors and AP courses that our available to them.

Carolina

I think I would tell myself to really take a step back and breathe. I would try and tell that scared senior to stop whenever she catches herself comparing herself to other people. I would also take the time to tell myself to not be scared when I see the big buildings and the huge amount of people and to never ever let it make me feel small, because no matter what, I know I have a big spirit. It may seem superficial, but to save myself the constant mirror checks before heading out the door, I would pick out a few outfits and explain it won't be the end of the world if I dare to repeat an outfit. The most important thing cannot be expressed in words: I would give myself a warm bear hug and pat myself on the back for making it this far.

Michelle

To make sure that you search for scholarships, as many as you can. College is very expensive. Also to keep an open mind because college is also about self-discovery. You would be surprise at how much you learn about yourself and what your priorities are once you have more freedom from your parents. College is only fun and easy when you make it to be.

Mariana

Going back to high school, I would have told myself to study as hard as I could and to do the best that I could in my AP classes so I could pass more Advanced Placement exams. I would tell myself to go to after school sessions to study for the ACT or SAT so I could have reached a higher score. I would tie in that I am to look up as many scholarships as I can and I am to submit all types of essays no matter how long it may take because it will pay off when I am in college in need for money to pay for very expensive books. I would also tell myself to fill out government financial aid on time and with proper information so I can recieve grants from the state. And finally I will tell myself that finishing high school is only the beggining of a very long proccess as to what I want to accomplish in life. I would have made myself realize what course of study I am most interested in and then to apply to a college that focuses on what it is I want to progess in.

Catherine

Dear soon to be college student, When you get to college, there is a lot of freedom and nobody is making sure that you get your work done or your class materials, and nobody is really paying attention if you go to class. It's up to you to show up and get your work done and even assign yourself homework when the professors do not give you any. Whenever you have freetime study for your classes, when an assignment is given, give yourself your own deadline because there is a lot of work to be done and you do not want to procrastinate. Get to know your professors, be nosy, talk to them even if you think you don't have a question, chances are that the professor can explain to you better what he is expecting from you. Visit them during their office hours so that they can help you with the class. If you are weak in a class go to tutoring, especially since at FIU its free. If you have a job save money, for any emergency that may arise. Don't slack, don't procrastinate. You are on your own now, so make yourself proud.

Rica

Don't be afraid to talk to people and make friends. Work hard, even though it is hard work, good grades will make life easier. Foregt what others, want you to do and go for what you enjoy and are passionate about. Make the most every day and do as much as you can without going crazy. Never give up, no matter how stressful come days will be. And stand up for yourself.

Sara

I would have told myself to broaden my horizons and not only apply to schools in Florida. I should have researched my options a lot more extensively. I would also tell myself not to be afraid. Rejection is not scary; it only makes me want bigger and better opportunities. If I were able to speak to my former self, I would probably be a happier, more educated college student.

Sigourney

I am in a situation due to domestic disturbances that has brought me to perform poorly my freshman year; now I am a student in good standing with the university. Just last semester I received an A in a 2nd level language course, and an A- in an upper division history class. I wish I could have told myself to focus more on getting the work done and not allowing myself to be dragged down by the family issues which abounded then. University life is full of deadlines, increased workload, and complete responsibility. It is not very hard, however, if one truly focuses on simply getting the assignments done. I also wouldn't have chosen upper division classes my first semester in; I was not advised very well, but I also did not seek it. I take full responsibility for having lost a major scholarship, and now I am paying for college largely out of pocket. The first half of tuition was due 01/08/10, and I had to max out my boyfriend's credit cards, along with borrow some money from my sister. I am appreciative of any help I can get.

Mabel

I would say to stay focused on my school work, school work needs to be my number one priorty and as a freshman I took advantage of the freedom in a bad way. Make sure to get school work done in order to graduate in time with your classmates.

MYRLENE

I would of took time time to look for better college, I would have taken school must more seriously because everything Ilearn in high school came back to me again and I had no choice but to learn the materials now all over again. to stay away from boys so that I wouldn't have a child now to depend on me and I would have more to myslf and to study.

Joceny

If I could go back to myself as a high school senior, I would tell my past self to attempt even more AP classes even though it seems like it would be too much work at the moment, it would greatly benefit me because it would be money that I could save because I would not have to pay for those courses or the books in the future. I would tell him that he needs to open up and think more about who he is because it will save him from trying to find out who he is as a person in life and he will make friends much easier. I will also tell him that the world he knows is about to change after he leaves the safety of high school. He needs to grasp more responsibility and prepare himself for the unfair world that awaits him outside of this small school.

John

Assuming that could go back to high school knowing what I know now, I would tell myself to remember the techniques that I learned when I was playing football so I can start on the varsity team every game. I would also work on my English writing skills because that improved in college dramatically. Maybe if that were the case in high school, I woul have scored higher in the English and Reading portion of the SAT. With the better score, I would surely get a lot more money for school because I would have gotten at least the 75{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} scholarship of Florida Bright Futures. Finally, I would tell myself to enjoy the rest of the year and to always study hard. Not wanting myself to know that I would do great, because I would not want myself to slack off knowing that I am going to be ok. And to avoid this girl that kind of broke my heart and go for the other that would have been great. And not to go to prom alone.

Don

Assuming I could go back in time I would have told myself to whip it into shape and start trying harder. I had always been told by far to many people that I needed to study hard, work had, and do everything I could in High School, so that college would be a bit easier and I would be used to the work load. However like any other teenager, I didnt listen to the advice that anyone over the age of 30 told me, because I felt they don't know, things were different when they were in school, or I'm better then them; besides I was doing just fine in High School. If I could have warned myself, there would have been a far greater chance of me working harder and trying on my schoolwork. I would have gotten more AP credits from passing more exams to exempt me from more college classes. Then I would be prepaired for college. I would be able to handle the work load, and I could jump right into my more advanced classes instead of wasting time taking the basic classes all over again. If only we could warn ourselves about college.

SAVE MORE MONEY AND PRACTICE MORE VIOLIN!

Christopher

There are so many things i would tell myself; I would enfore and drill the idea that scholarship comes first no matter what in my brain if it took all year long. I would hopefull be able to persuade myself to think more maturely about my priorities beginning with scholarship, classes, dues, and so on all the way to keeping up with deadlines and joining a couple groups here and there to expand my network as soon as i could without interfering with my studies. I would advise myself to think about what i want and listen to what i'm saying because if i would have known that the maturity level and self-motivation level would be so high along with the freedom you have and the responsibility that comes with it, i would have probably been better off the first semester. I'd have to stress the fact that it is hard, but it is rewarding to buckle down and see the acheivement in your hands and the pride others keep in you. I would tell myself the truth about the difficulty but i would also tell myself i could do it if i listened.

danny

take advantage of your senior year, you only go to high school once, and when its over you will never get it back. so live it up make friends and learn, take ap classes and advance in credits so that you can save money. make the most out of highschool so when you make it to college you can make the best out of it as well. be prepared to take control of your own life and manage your time. mommy and daddy arent there to wake you up or speak with your teachers, so take initiative and do your best and become someone in life. live your life to the fullest and take control of your college career. you are incharge of your success.

Kimberly

Make sure to get involved in college, to meet new people. There are clubs, sports, and activities for everyone. The people you meet in these extracirricular activities can become like family. College can be such a rewarding experience if you get involved. Any univeristy can have the family affect on a student, if you let it.

Glory

Although my college transition has been fairly simple, I wish I could have gone back in time and warn myself about some aspects of college. If I could go back in time I would tell myself that being a good student isn't the only thing necessary in becoming successful. College is extremely expensive and saving money is one of the key components in becoming successful in college. I would also advise myself to partake in more community service activities to set myself a part from my colleagues who ran for the Silver Knight award. Many scholarships involve taking action in the community, therefore had I known how competitive the race for the Silver Knight award was, I would have put in more hours helping others outside of my own comfort zone. Even though my transition in college would have been easier had I had enough for books, nothing's worse than knowing you could have done more.

Hadassah

I would have told myself , college is not as hard as it seems. I would have say lisenting is the best tool for college. No matter what the professor said just do exactly what he or she says and you will make it through for college. I also want to tell myself have a plan and stick to it. Always have a plan on what you want to do and stick to it. Do not wait for the last minute to do your plan, or else it can screw you over.

Sasha

If I were able to go back in time and give myself some advise, for starters I would have taken the SAT more seriously. Instead of just going into the test without any real preparation I would take the initiative to attend some SAT classes that help you better understand what it is the test is trying to examine you on, as well as prepare you for the subject areas that were going to be covered in the test. Secondly, I would have taken better advantage of the dual enrollment classes that were offered in my High School because they were free of charge, and I would have not only saved money & time, but would have been more prepared for my college education. Lastly, I would definitely highly recommend myself to write down my goals short as well as long and have a concrete idea of what I wanted to do and how long it would take me to attain them.

Michael

If I could go back in time I would tell myself three things. First I would say college is not going to be easy and that if you want to suceed foucus on a goal and stive for it. Second I would let myself known that things will not always go the way they were palnned always have a plan B. Fianlly I would say have fun and enjoy the rest of High School these will be some of the greatest moments in your life.

Sandra

To be able to go back to my high school days! Just to be able to experience a day with less weight on my shoulders and pressure to succeed sounds tempting. However my high school self would appreciate and benefit more if I went back with sound wisdom and not a plea from the future to relive the past. I wouldn't tell me anything new, I wouldn?t want to ruin the delight and importance of new self discoveries, but I would stress how easy it is to fall behind in what is most important, our academia. I would remind myself that in this race called life, the ones who win the prize of the degree with honors are the ones who made the social sacrifices to prepare for those tests and projects. Never underestimate an assignment, and the time that it would take to complete it, if it?s so quick and menial then just do it. Lastly, I would remind myself that the people who I would sacrifice my school work for to have a social life, will not be able to help me when companies do not hire me due to lacking knowledge.

Silvia

If I were a high school senior, the advice that I would give myself before picking a college is to do a lot of research. Before attending a university, a student should focus on what they want to accomplish while they attend the university. For example what kind of clubs or classes are they interested in participating and if their university offers them. As well, it is important that a student finds out before attending, what kind of bachelor degree the university offers. In other words, does the university offer a Bachelor of Arts degree or a Bachelor of Science degree. This is very important because each bachelor holds different criteria. For example, a Bachelor of Science will allow the student to explore more indepth research studies about their major, while a Bachelor of Arts will only give them the opportunity to learn the history and basic knowledge of their major. Finding out what kind of degree the student wants is very important to learn before hand because not all universities offer both degrees, they might only offer one. Lack of knowing can cause a student to have to transfer out in the middle of the year to another university.

If I could go back in time I would tell myself to see a psychologist. I would tell myself I would be in college for 3 years failing a few classes while getting C's in everything else. I would tell myself that I had given up on being my dream of being a civil engineer. I will tell myself that by chance I saw a psychologist and was diagnosed with A.D.D.I. a variation of attention deficit disorder, Since then I was getting A's and B's in all my classes and on my way to be a civil engineer.

James

If I had this opportunity I would sit myself down and explain the importance of proper study habits, prioritizing what I truly want out of my college experience and how to manage a high acedemic course line up with a balance of campus life.

Lianet

If I could go back in time, the first advice I would give to myself as a senior in highschool is to apply to more scholarships. My first year of college, I had Bright futures 100percent and a Bank of America scholarship .This year however, I only had the bright futures scholarship because the Bank of America was only for 1 year, and due to Bright futures decision to cut back, I now have to pay 600 dollars for my tuition as well as for books. If, as a senior in highschool I would have applied to more scholarships, I would probably be in a better position, financially, right now. Second advice I'd give myself is to get more involved and learn better time management skills. In highschool I wasn't as involved as I should have been because I dedicated all my time to my academics. Now that I am in college I have realized the imporance of being in clubs, doing internships, and community service. However, I have struggled a little to manage my time with so much on my plate. I probably would have struggled less if I had realized all this in highschool.

Sean

The main point I would tell my high school senior self would be the importance of the college you pick. Back in high school I did not think the choice of which college I would attend would actually make a difference. I figured, naively, that college would be similar no matter where I went. Now however, I see that the choice of the instituiton should not be taken lightly. One must evaluate a school thoroughly starting with a visitation. Visiting a school provides you with information that you will never find in any brochure or website. During visitation you have the opportunity to ask questions to current students and administrators as well as find out if the school feels like the correct fit for you. I would advise my younger self not to pick a school solely on the strength of one department as college students are infamous for changing their mind in regards to their major. Instead I would tell my younger self to look at the general academic environment and seek out a school with strong departments in most fields.

Priscilla

If i could go back in time and advise myself on college life, i would tell myself to apply to FIU school of architecture from the start. I would start off as a freshmen to recieve the complete education for the first years instead of starting your first two years in community college. I would research more financal aid options and make myself aware of all the scholarship awards available. I will tell myself to get properly advised at FIU school of architecture and prepare myself to enjoy college like and make friends.

Anet

Join lots of study groups, and stay focused NO MATTER WHAT!! Take all the Core( science and math) classes your firstand second year to stay on top of your game. If tutoring IS available, Use itto your FULL advantage. Pick classes early and go to ratemyprof.com to choose a better then average professor that would make the class easier to understand. Go to CLASS, this part is VERY important, even if the class lecture is not mandatory, it will benefit you tremendously, especially when professors tend to point out particular things on future exams and quizzes. Use the resources on campus to the full extent; the tutoring can come very handy, but don?t wait till the LAST minute to finish or study for assignments. And for the love of GOD, DO NOT PROCASANATE!!! Use your time wisely, seriously!

Nathanael

You should have taken some Advanced Placement classes when you were in high school. Also it would have been nice to live off campus, so you should have gotten a job so that you could afford a better living situaion. You surely made the right descison with moving to Miami, don't think there is a city better in the country.

Ashley

If I could go backi n time and talk to myself as a high school senior, I would tell myself to make sure that I am focused at all times. I would tell myself, "this is the time where you grow in becoming a responsible adult." This would be a serious and very important conversation that I have with myself becauses this is the beginning of a brand new chapter of adulthood, maturity, responsiblity, and a very bright future. I would tell myself to make sure I study hard and do everything to the best of my ability, because if I don't build a successful life for myself, then who will?

Nicholas

Think longterm. Will you be happy with your decision for four years, academically, socially, and financially. Be realistic!

Carolina

Take the first semester very seriously, it impacts your GPA in ways that you will regret as a senior. Get involved as soon as possible in extracurricular activites. It is a great way of meeting new people and it will also help you determine future career plans. If you are going into any pre-health field, don't choose biology or chemistry. Everyone does it and your chances of being accepted go down, besides there are many other interesting fields out there. Going back to the joining of clubs and fraternities, it is better to be the president of one society than active member of 20. LEARN TO SPEAK IN PUBLIC . Establish good relationships with your professors, they will be writting your letters of recommendation. Do research, go study abroad for a semester or the summer and enjoy every minute of it because before you know it , its over.

christina

Balance fun with acedemia.

Lizandra

During my first semester in college I lived in the dorms. Eventually, drinking and partying everyday caught up to me and I wasn?t even able to make it to my 1pm class. It wasn?t until I saw my 1.64 GPA that I decided to take school serious. Now, I am living the life that every college student should have, and I should've planned that out firsthand. Checklist to a successful college career: live on-campus to get full exposure on campus activities, always keep an agenda on you & learn time management, never cram & definitely avoid all-nighters, join a fraternity/sorority because it?s the biggest social network in school, get involved in clubs & organizations that help you grow as a person, avoid bad-influences, never neglect studying and always prioritize, do an internship, party less than what you study, apply for scholarships and use the money to study abroad, make friends, take full advantage of the library, never miss class & always sit in the front, don?t be afraid to talk to new people, and most of all, HAVE FUN because after these 4 years comes the real world.
