What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Sandra

I have gained the chance to go abroad, going abroad was not only a dream for me, but upon attending this campus it has become a reality. I have been able to see from the worm and the bird's eye view, one of the things that the world around me possess, diversity. I have been alluded the opportunity to meet new people, see things that were usually in my text book and i as an individual was able to grow. My vision is clearer and i am indeed wiser. Now i am able to share my experience with others through my memories, my pictures and the people i continue to keep in contact with still this very day.

I have gotten so much out of my college experience, to begin I have grown as a person. Leaving my home was one of the hardest things I've had to do, but I have learned that by going to college I am opening up so many more doors and opportunities for myself. I've learned to be more open to different people and ideas. College has taught me that just because I didn't hang out with someone in high school, doesn't mean I should be afraid or reserved in who I become friends with. I have also learned to be more organized in my studies, it's not always about hanging out with friends and laying around the house all day. Being on my own has taught me to place more value on my free time and to work so much harder for what I want for my future than I ever thought I would have. My college experience, thus far, has made me who I am today, a responsible, hard working individual with a love of people and an openness for new experiences, and of course a very bright and hopeful outlook on life.

McKenzie

I came from a very small high school that had only 72 students in my graduating class, to a school of 40,000 students. I have learned so much from the variety of racial/ethnic students on campus. I never realized that i would meet so many amazing people all mixed together. There are so many differents clubs and organization to join and help get involved on and off campus. Meeting all of these different types of people has probably been the best part of my college experience. It is valuable to me because i can learn so much from each and everyone that i meet. Everyone has so much to offer!

Being in college for even as little as I have, has already taught me so much about not only this new enviroment that I'm now a part of, but also the real world. I have learned that it doesn't matter how small the similarity is between two people that small link can sprout into a friendship as long as they are both open and accepting of each other. Besides learning to be open and non-judgemental, I have also grasped the fact that responsibilty whether it be concerning money or going to class every morning is the most important thing a college student can possess. I have spent many weekends at different college, but I have to say none of them are quite as welcoming and enriching as Florida State's campus. I've built so many relationships that even if they dont blossom now have the chance of being useful in the future if I ever need help or even just a different perspective on life.

College has been amazing for me so far. I am only a freshman and the experience couldn't be better. Florida State University is a really comfortable place and you just fit right in. So far, i have learned that if you just put 100{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} into something when you do it then it will be worth it in the end. College teaches you that you must work hard to achieve your goals. I have also grown as a person while i have been in college. It is valuable to attend college so that you can find your way in life and begin working towards your goals.

Julie

The most valuable part of my college life has been the hands-on experience I got from my time at Appalachian State University in Boone, NC. There I took many biology and evironmental courses, each with an incredible lab. The teaching assistants who taught the labs were the friendliest, most willing people to help students. They were also clever, introducing the classes to concepts with hands-on experiments and off-campus excursions to help us delve into the material learned suring lectures.

Joel

I have gotten many things out of my college experience, but the people I have met and the different events I have participated in has been the most valuable. From attending football games, to participating in clubs, the college town atmosphere has changed me in a lot of ways. It has increased my school spirit, helped me advance my interpersonal skills, and has helped me create a multitude of diverse friends. During one concert I went to, the beat sounded like our school's war chant so everyone began singing and dancing along too it. It made me proud to belong to an institution that is based on tradition and school pride.

Florida State University has provided me with the opportunity to expand my horizons in more ways than one. The professors here are constantly challenging the students to think outside the box and to be as ubiased as possible. There are so many student-run organizations that are geared toward creating a more enlightened student body and they are a fantastic asset to this university. I feel like even when I'm not in the classroom, there are opportunities to learn something new every single day here, and that is something I am incredibly grateful for. Florida State University is valuable to me because it marks the part of my life when I could actually learn about anything and everything that I ever wanted to, which I could not get in high school. I do not feel like an outcast here because I am interested in politics or learning the Arabic language, like I do when I am in my hometown with my old high school friends. Learning of all types is encouraged at FSU and that's why it's a perfect fit for me.

I am attending at TCCD, It has been a wonderful experience. I really appreciate the oportunity that I have to complete the BSN program. Thank you for all your help.

Patricia

Well I'm currently enrolled to attend college this coming spring so I have not actually been to college yet. Although, I have learned from the preparing for college portion that it's a big deal to go to college. I hope college teaches me how to be self sufficent, how to manage my time and money, and how to get the most out of learning. At this point, I don't know if I'll even be able to survive college, but I'm willing to give it a try.

My university has given me so many great experiences and I have only been here for a couple of months. Being away from home for the first time gave me a new sense of independence. Back where I am from my friends that stayed at the local university live the same way they did in high school, sure they have matured since then but they still do the same things and experience the same events. It is so monotonous. The university that I chose to go to is eight hours away from home so I can fully experience the liberating independence offered by a university. I choose when I do everything! Study, eat, sleep, get back home, etc. I don’t have to wait on my parents to decide or to allow me to do anything and let me tell you, it is an invigorating feeling! All the new friends, new ways of studying, and new ways of interacting with the world as well as many other things here have profoundly affected me and changed me into a more well rounded and self-sufficient person. I thank Florida State University for this life changing part of my life.

I have gained a better understanding of who I am, and the things that can be accomplished through hard work, and dedication. It has helped me to gain a prospective on what is needed for me to achieve my goals of becoming a Supply Chain Professional. Returning to college has been valuable to me in many ways, but most importantly how it has affected my family. My three girls really never cared about their education, and doing well in school was not a top priority. No matter what I tried to make them see the importance of having an education, and doing well in school they would just roll their eyes at me and state, “whatever!” When I announced to my family that I would be returning to school to earn my degree, they were shocked. My daughters asked, “Dad why are you going back to school? You already have a job.” After that I let them know that it is not about having a job, but about setting goals to better yourself, and doing something you enjoy doing. After returning to school, my girls have worked harder at their education, and at achieving their own future goals.

The college experience is often labeled as “the best years of your life” or as I like to call it “the leap into manhood”. Being in a college campus is very different to being in high school in many ways, whether it is the people, the professors, the classes, or even the food. Each teaches a different set of rules and skills that are necessary later on in life. What college has taught me that high school did not was the thin line between responsibility and purpose. Being a college campus it can be difficult to focus on academics when there are so many other things to do like joining clubs, doing intramurals, or just simply walking around the campus meeting new people. While I enjoy doing all of the above, I enjoy even more sticking to my purpose of someday becoming a cardiologist, which in part leads to the responsibility to do well in school. This campus has taught me that no matter how easy it is to lose focus on a goal or purpose, holding on to responsibility and determination makes it much possible to stay on track. This for me, is a very valuable lesson.

Emily

My college experience completely shaped who I am as a young adult. I learned values and skills at FSU that will stay with me throughout my life. At first, the sheer size of the school, both the campus and the population, overwhelmed me, but I quickly made friends and got into the groove of campus life. I took classes that were totally out of my comfort zone, like oceanography and comparative politics, and discovered that I loved them. I went to events I never would have attended otherwise, such as concerts, sports games, seminars, masterclasses, fitness classes, and midnight movies. In high school, I was shy and quiet. My experience at college brought me out of my shell and molded me into a confident, outgoing person. I joined a service organization and made friends with people from all different ethnic, social and economic backgrounds. During my sophomore year of college, my older brother passed away. The support I received from faculty and friends was incredible. I will never forget the professor who personally tutored me during that impossibly hard time of my life and helped me pass her class with flying colors. My experiences at FSU have been indescribably valuable.

What have I gotten out of my college experience? Wow, that seems like such a simple question but in my case it has many ways to answer it. When I put a foot on a class, I thought I knew it all; since back in my country I was always honors, I thought it would be a piece of cake. Unfortunately, it was not like I imagined. The pre requisite classes were easy; however, the classes that pertained to my program were much more difficult. I was always a loner, but that changed fast because in the program you need to be able to accept help from others and help others. I was always the person who learned things by just memorizing them and always got As, seemed to work by the time, but in life it did'nt. Being in college and having the teachers I had helped me to rationalize and be able to understand things better than just memorizing them. Being in college gave me the confidence to go to the next step and be able to perform what I have studied this time and be able to go to another school to improve my education.

Sophie

I have gotten out of my college experience the chance to meet amazing friends. I have had the opportunity to further my education and to get a job that I love that will support me. It has been so valuable to me to be able to attend college because I am the first person in my family to go away to college. I am the first person to be able to experience this and I appreciate it so much.

Brittney

I received guidance to becoming the person I am today. In highschool I was judged for being a little nerdy and not having the newest clothing but in college I learned that I was simply misunderstood. I can share my views and opinions freely with people who are open and interested in learning and expanding their views. I have gained life long friends with people who share my views and passions. I have found pride in myself to be a well rounded student. I gained confidence to put myself out there for people to get to know me and to get to know others as well. College has changed my perception of the world and I understand that my purpose is more than to get a job and make a bunch of money. I have learned that success is determined solely by how much I believe I can acheive my goals and aspirations.

Azra

I have been privileged to attend college after moving to the United States from a war ridden country. The thing that I believe is most valuable that I have received from my college education is the amazing opportunity to join clubs that focus on charitable events. I have been fortunate enough to join several clubs that allow me to give back to my community and it has given my life more value I beleive. I know that I am better off having a college education because it allows me to expand my knowlege on several different subjects and levels.

Amanda

Since I have been back in college I have noticed from my experience you have to be emotionally and mentally capable to withstand college. I've learned that it is up to you if you truly want to make it to your goal that you have to fully apply yourself and not joke around because if you close your eyes to long graduation will be around the corner and you may not even be ready. College is valuble because it truly teaches you how to deal with everyday life and how the real workforce operates in society.

Rebeccah

FSU continues to amaze me. The spirit that courses through this campus is unparalled to any I've experienced at any other school. It lights up the stadium until it blazes garnet and gold; it binds the community one seminole at a time; it turns students into chiefs. Not to mention, I am learning more, hands on, in my major than most students do. I am building props, painting sets, hanging lights, helping with mics. I am helping with mainstages and building my resume, so that when I go out into the work force, I will be prepared. I can show the world that I am seminole, and I have the spirit, drive, and skills to suceed.

Arline

Since it has been more than 30 years out of school, I think it was about time I did something for myself. The College I selected is Saint Leo's University because of their williness to help others acheive their goals. It's never too late to go back to school and get the right education to improve oneself. I have had many missed opportunities and I just had to get strong and say It's my turn now!! Saint Leo's has helped me from the start and continue to do so every step of the way. I am so grateful to have found a University that cares about your needs and wants. I had to start from scratch and they are able to assist me without hesitation. I really appreciate everything they have done and continue to do for me to excel in the buisness world.

Lendra

I have gotten out of my college experience is a stronger resolve in what i am doing with my future. It has been valuable to attend this school because i know that i would not that being at this amazing institution of learning has given me the need to keep stay tough no matter how difficult it seems at times because with all the help offered at this amazing institution i know that m y focus will not waiver.

Laura

My college experience has been wonderful. I have met amazing people, been taught by amazing professors. I have become more open-minded, and discovered unknown interests. At my college, I have become the Vice President of the Rotaract Club, which is a junior Rotary club. We have volunteered at many events such as Project Homeless and the LA AIDS Walk. I completed my AA in 3 semesters maintaining a 3.5, I worked two jobs and was in various extra curricular activities. I was not accepted to SDSU, but now I have taken this past semester to take more courses and to research more what I would like to major in. I am now applying to UCSD and plan to major in International Studies with a focus in Sociology. I hope to join the Peace Corps and open up a school in a third world country. With this scholarship it will help me pay for my tuition at UCSD and accomplish my goals and hopefully succeed with my future plans.

Everyone says college is the time of your life you never forget. Its true. Since I began attending Florida State University, I have met so many new people, allowing my perspectives to widen immensely. I have met so many amazing and passionate professors which only intrigue me, as a student, and wills me to learn more. I have gained more than just an amazing education. I have gained lifelong friends, each one with different friends of their own. I have also gained an extreme sense of responsibility; What used to scare me before no longer does, as I am much more independent and confident in my choices(which 95{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the time are good ones!). I strongly encourage everyone to attend college, the money is available if one looks for it. What you gain from college undoubtedly outweighs the price, not only in an intellectual level, but in a "self-assuring" way as well. I love college and will continue to work hard at it.

Stephanie

Thus far in my college experience, I have learned many things. In high school, getting an A in a class came very easy for me. It required little to no work at all. College is an entirely different ball game. If I want in A in my classes, I have to work very hard to get it. Even though I try my hardest, I sometimes do not achieve an A. It goes to show me that when ever I begin a life of my own, I am going to have to work for what I want and need. There is not going to be an easy way of getting it. Also, not having anyone around that checks up on you and checks your grades are a huge change. Anything can happen to you in college and your parents will never know. I have learned self discipline throughout my first semester in college and how to manage my time since there aren't teachers giving me permission to go to lunch or to use the bathroom. In college, you are on your own with no one there to back you up. I am becoming my own, independent person.

David

My college experience has shown me that I am capable of much more than I accomplished during High School. In High School i did not make that good of grades but while in college, I may not have done well in some classes because I was getting use to the whole college thing. I have shown myself that I was selling myself short and have decided to not only do my two years at a technical college but go on to a four year university and get my bachelors and one day masters degree. College has shown me the importance of an education today. Graduating college has become more important to me as I want to be succesful and make something of myself. College has been and will a valuable experience to show me hard work and dedication pays off even though you may not want to go to your eight o'clock class some mornings. Attending college and classes becomes more important everyday especially as our nations economy slowly gets worse. Jobs will get harder and harder to get and having a college degree will help me succeed and provide for a family one day.

Irina

There are several things that I got out of my college experience. Most importantly, I learned perseverance. There are times when it seems extremely hard to finish an assignment in a short period of time. So not only I have to be able to have excellent time management skills, but I should also have perseverance. I learned to stress myself less than I used to and just do my best. In the end, stress will only get in the way with my work. So managing my stress level is one of most valuable skills that I got out of my college experrience. I think it is a helpful skill to have in other areas of my life besides college.

Nicolle

What I have most gotten out of my college experience so far is the way our lives are changing. As a freshman at the Florida State University, I have grown to become a better person. I have become a bit more involved in my community. Joining some clubs with nursing and the rowing team at the university has brought me to meet some new friends. College is a great opportunity to get to know ourselves, and life has changed. I feel that I am mature now living on my own. Most importantly, college is about knowlege. Let me tell you, I have learned a great amount of things here at Florida State University. My goal in life is to become a nurse. The value of attending college gives me the chance to reach my goal, and able to help others. Especially children, I want to be a pediactric nurse!

Deanna

Out of my so far college experience I have gained a type of maturity that has been noticed ny many. When I first graduated high school, I wasn't quite old enough to head off to a dorm college on my own. The community college I am attending has mentally prepared me for my next steps, attending UMass Amherst in the fall. It has been valuable to attend classes there. I have uped my GPA. I feel like I am actually learning and gaining knowledge useful to me. I feel like I am making something of myself, and I like the way it feels.

Andrew

I have been taught how to manage my stress, finances, and academics all at the same time while still managing to have tons of fun!

Shanna-Kay

College has taught me to be more open minded and tolerant. There are so many different types of people here with so many different backgrounds and opinions that if you don't "free your mind" you are missing out on an opportunity to learn so many different things. College has also helped me to be more outgoing. When I moved here I was extremely shy but I had to learn to open up to new people because I didn't know anybody at all and I realized that I couldn't enjoy the total college experience on my own. I know that now I'm equipped with the interpersonal skills needed to enter the professional world.

William

I have learned to accept everything in life and to not fight it when something doesn't go my way or if life isn't what I expected it to be. I've come to have a profound respect for the environment and every creature in it and I'm involved with student organizations on campus that are geared towards this as well. I like it here at FSU and I feel that there are opportunities for me here that I could not find elsewhere. I look forward to the rest of my journey here!

Morgan

During my high school years I have had the opportunity to meet so many new people that are all so different but make me notice different things about myself. I have also had the opportunity to learn so many new things that have increased my knowledge beyond my wildest belief. I feel like I will use all the new things that I have learned in college throughout the rest of my life everyday.

Alexis

Out of my college experience I have gotten a sense of independence, great relationships, a better education, and great skills for the future. It has been valuable to attend because it is a good way to further my education of bettering my skills and learning new ones to get farther in the working world of today.

alfonso

I'm currently still attending college and for my time being, it is a wonderful experience. I'm attending college because I want to become something better in life, and show my three little brothers that they can do it. I'm the first in my family to attend college and i'm going to graduate so that my mother would be proud of me. Attending college is valuable to me because its giving me an opportunity to get a higher degree and to make more money.

Samantha

Attending college has provided me with the opportunity to grow as an individual both academically and socially. College has helped me realize the value in education and I am forever more greatful for such an experience. My mmultitude of classes, both rigorious and some easy, have helped me expand my knowledge in areas that I would have never guessed interested me so much. Through my involvement as a research assistant in a psychology professors lab, I have been able to hone my academic abilities in an applied setting. With my involvement in my sorority, I have both been able to fully become comfortable with who I am and truy accepted the individual I have always hoped to become. College has been a remarkable experience that I truly would not give up for the world.

Njeri

Over the past year that I have been in college, I have grown intellectually and spiritually. Going to college has allowed me to open my mind and experience new things. I am more aware of my surroundings and I've met many new and different people. I now appreciate the variety of lifestyles that exist in this world and I embrace my individuality. By noting the different religious organizations on campus and seeing how other students are so enthusiastic about their beliefs, I have become more enthusiastic about my own beliefs. All of these things combined are what make my college experience so valuable to me.

Jennifer

Although I am just starting the program, I am learning a lot about how students (and children) learn. Also, the effect of technology on teaching and learning. Using technology in the classroom is beneficial to both the students and the teachers. With instant access to information, there is no limit to what you can bring to the classroom. And, it can help some individuals learn better.

Reena

Having just graduated high school and being a current freshman, I have already realized the true importance of college. Growing up, I had always been so dependent on my parents and other individuals that I did not know how to fend for myself. When I needed a sandwich fixed for lunch the next day, my dad would make it for me. When I needed to talk to an official or simply needed something carried out, I asked my mom to do it for me. Everything was performed for my sake, and accordingly, I lacked self-independence and self-confidence. College is naturally identified as a path to higher academic education, but the truth behind it is that it sets young people in motion for the rest of their lives. My college experience has taught me to accomplish things on my own and to understand that I am so much more than what I used to be. College teaches deep values and skills to its students. It is the beginning of the real world, and it has goaded me to rely on myself – no more mommy or daddy. As a result, I am now strong, worthy, and so ready for life.

Caitlin

I think that my college experience so far has been about much more than education. While I love my classes, I feel that college is about learning about yourself, and what you want to do with your life. College is about getting real-life experience, not just getting good grades for the sake of getting good grades. College has made me grow more as a person than I have in the last 18 years of my life. I finally feel like I know who I am, which is something that everyone needs if they hope to ever be successful in life. College was the best thing that has ever happened to me and I know I would not be able to make it in the "real world" if it wasn't for my college experience.

Krystal

I have gotten so much out of my time in college so far, and I am loving every single minute of it. I have learned so much, not only from the classes that I have taken, but also the people that are around me on campus. Being in college has made me realize the amount of opportunity that I have and that I can take advantage of. It has also made me realize how many people actually support me. Being at school everyday has made me realize that there are a whole lot of people who really care and are genuine people inside and out. I have also learned an endless amount in the classes that I taken. College has kept me grounded and on a great path in life, one that I know will take me places. If I didn't go to college, I would be so many steps behind. I am so thankful for every day and moment I am there because it's a priceless gift.

rita

Been in college means one step closer to be successful, becasue i am getting close to acheive my goal to obtain a degree

Ashley

Fullerton Community College, has given me the knowledge and life experiences I need to decide what I want out of life, and it is very valuable to me because if I had not gone to college I would not have learned how hard or how easy life can be, and what it really takes to get to your goals.

Zachary

Throughout much of my schooling I have realized the importance of furthering your education. Not only has college provided me with a lot of knowledge about my future career path, but it has helped me grow as an adult as well. There have been many times throughout my time at college that have provided a lot of hurdles that I had to overcome. It has often been a difficult process and has been extremely stressful at times, but it has truly helped me to grow as a person. Some of my greatest sacrifices have been due to finances and it has often forced me to make choices that I do not necessarily want to make. It has been a struggle for me personally and I've had to do a lot of this on my own. It has really helped me become an individual and look out for myself. I know that in order to have the best future I need to make the sacrifices now and make it through school. It is this simple fact that has helped me persevere through the challenges I have already faced and what keeps me going now.

Aimee

My college experience has exposed me to many different cultures and new ideas. Instead of registering for a foreign language course like Spanish, I chose Russian. Learning Russian, while difficult, makes me feel unique. In the summer of 2011, I plan to study abroad in Russia. Study abroad experiences are very unique, and I feel it will help me understand the language and the culture in a new way. The spring semester of 2010, I decided to spend my spring break volunteering in Baxley, GA with the Alternative Break Corps. at Florida State University. In Baxley we worked with the Nature Conservancy preparing firebreaks, planting various endangered species of plants, and collecting garbage from the Moody Forest. The trip with Alternative Break Corps. was an amazing experience. I met new, exciting people and helped preserve the environment, a huge interest of mine. As a Biology major, I feel learning Russian will help me stand out among seas of applicants. After spending my spring break in Baxley, GA, I know I want to make the environment a priority in my future. The friends I have made while enrolled ar Florida State University have become part of my family and my future.

Eric

I have found out that I am my own enemy. There are so many people that want me to succeed now and in the future that the only person really holding me back from doing things I want to be doing is myself. I want to get more involved with campus and I want to get more involved with the community. When I came to FSU I knew it would be tough getting out there into the real world on my own, but FSU has put me in touch with some great friends and great professors that I can only do bigger and better things and that is because of the people that FSU surrounded me with.

Kelly

College has been a very valuable experience because I have made it about more than receiving an education. To me, college has been an opportunity to make new friends and memories, help others, and discover myself. When I first enrolled at FSU I was a little overwhelmed by such a large student body, and found myself questioning how I was going to make my mark. I introduced myself to others and attended involvement fairs and other campus activities searching for something that was a good fit. I joined Best Buddies, an organization which creates one-to-one friendships with developmentally disabled people and instantly felt a sense of relief. Helping people has always been a passion of mine, and it was nice to find a group of people who shared this interest. Even though it’s only my first year in the club, I became secretary and am having a blast making friends with those similar and very different than myself. I’ve only been in college for a couple of months, but I can already tell that the most valuable lessons I learn will be outside of the classroom, and I think that’s a wonderful thing.

Michellel

I attended college many years ago and left with an Associate of Arts Degree. I feel, in retrospect, that completing a Bachelors would have been a better option. At this stage in my life I am looking to return to school to attain a degree in the Healthcare field. I am a mom and with the downturn in our nation's economy, I feel it necessary in order to be better suited to provide for my family. I feel that attending college provides detailed instruction and knowledge to finding a career/job which will increase one's earning potential and sustainability. My recomendation to my own child is to attend college, for in doing so, the opportunities for employment and advancement of one's career is at a far greater advantage. Thank you for the opportunity to apply for funds to help me achieve a goal long lost.

Amanda

College has proved to be a life changing experience in my first semester here at FSU. Not only have I been challenged academically, I have been challenged socially. The people I have met from community style living, campus ministries, student government and service organizations have sparked my interest in making the most of my four years here at FSU. The people I have met see the important connection between education and its role within our society. FSU fosters a student's zeal and passion for learning and returns the student back into a society that benefits from the student's service to the community. Upon graduation, I look forward to playing an active role in my community sharing my experiences at FSU with those around me.

Charnise

I have never been the type of student to look forward to school. But knowing a degree would be the best for me it swiftly became a necessity in my life. With the help of my family and teachers who pushed me to attend college and reach my best potential it only made my decision easier. Now that im in college I cannot say that I regret this decision at all. Yes, it is a total change to what I was use to in high school but im learning so much about myself and appreciating the world more. I do attend a community college which is smaller than the average college or university but it has opened so many doors that I never knew of. The different types of people, the array of clubs and groups to be apart of, and the different ways of thinking brought about in class discussions makes me want to learn more. Not only have I learned about other people I have learned about myself. I have conquered new thresholds that I don’t think I could do last year, and I did. I feel like im becoming a better me and I love it.
