Describe the students at your school.

Audrey

We are FREE SPIRITED here at Tech!!! Forget A&M's lame traditions. We have more school pride and spirit than any other school in Texas! One of my favorite things about Tech is that we have our traditions but we don't base our pride around them. We base our pride around our entire school and student body. We are ALL proud to be RED RAIDERS and we don't need different hand signals to set us apart from one another. We are a whole and we cheer, support, laugh and have fun as a whole. If you want to be free to do what you like and not looked at as an outsider for not following the crowd then Texas Tech is perfect for you! TEXAS TECH= FREE SPIRITED!!!

Diana

There is alot of diversity in the student body. Everyone can find a place to fit in. There is always something on campus that you can find to do, and people are really friendly. I was blown away with how many people said hello to me when i first moved into the dorms.

Brittany

Most students are from Texas. It is a very conservative student body. Dressing to class can be compared to the look one has from rolling out of bed. Hair is in a huge messy bun or ponytail and shorts, sperrys or uggs, and a large tshirt. Boys in frats dress in brightly colored polos and khaki shorts. other boys tend to wear cowboy boots.

Jessica

I've seen a very diverse amount of people on the Texas Tech campus. So I'm pretty sure any person would love Tech. Different types of students interact each day, not only in class but outside of class also. I have met a lot of students that are very politically aware.

Jordan

The student body at Texas Tech is pretty diverse. There are a lot of different social groups, and most of them get along extremely well. I have noticed that there aren't as many minorities (specifically African Americans) on our campus. We are known to have a pretty conservative campus, and the majority are Republicans. We do, however, have a "Tech Democrats" club, and they're very active on campus, as well. We have a lot of students from Dallas (Highland Park, Lake Highlands, Plano), Houston (Memorial, The Woodlands), and San Antonio (Alamo Heights). We also have a lot of small towners - Abilene, Brownwood, Midland/Odessa, Sweetwater, Victoria. Many of the students are wealthy through oil or just family money.

Brandi

I dont think any student could feel out of place here. When i first moved up to tech i seriously didnt know anyone. i hung out in my dorm for the first week by myself getting organzied for school to start. once i started gettin out of the dorm i found it didnt take me long at all to meet people. there are a million places to go on campus so once u find a place you like to be you meet people there and usually yall will have the same interests and there you go, your group starts forming. im pretty athletic so i would go to the student rec a lot and meet a lot of athletes and now my close group of friends are people who play football, volleyball, soccer, and basketball for tech. there are million people here to meet and from all over the globe. ive met people from africe, europe, austraila, fiji, spain, and china. its a great place to meet people and its good to learn about diverse groups of people. usually students will wear just jeans and a sweater to class depending on the weather. a lot of girls like to wear the athletic shorts with ugg boots and a northface sweater. its an interesting style choice to me but no exactly my own. you usually dont see people dressed up unless they have a presentation due or they are seniors and making important speeches.

Melissa

I wish Tech had a more diverse student body. Most students here are white. Although we are growing in terms of racial diversity, a lot moe needs to be done. Also, there shoudl be more economic and social diversity.

Edgar

Most people at Tech are either from Houston or Dallas... there are different kinds of groups here but there is something for everybody if you cant find something you like then start your own... Tech is really cool about new organizations and stuff and they like diversity...

Colin

The student body is fine, a great balance of all sorts of people. I am glad that there have not been any major incidents or tragedies here.

Owen

This is a school filled with mostly WASPs. There is a good, southern, preppy feel, mixed with some country outdoorsy type of life. Most people who like Tech the most are Greek, and well off, but there are all different types of people, as to be expected with 30000 students. Most of my friends wear polo shirts and khaki pants and drive tahoes, and that should give you a feel for the atmosphere.

Charlie

Like I said, the people here are amazing for the most part! I've never had a more diverse group of friends before I got to Tech.

David

It's a very conservative county and the school is heavily leaning to the right but you will definitely find the liberals and those leaning the other way. We have had some interesting characters come speak in the area and Lubbock is definitely an interesting place to be. You will find students in upper/middle class areas and you will find the mustangs and lexus's in the parking lot. You will also find students who are 100{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} on financial aid and who do not have cars. It's pretty nice. The fashion here isn't that great. It's actually pretty lacking. There are some who dress nice and know some things about fashion but in generally it's sad.

Tessa

I have participated with many religious groups on the Tech campus. There are so many to get involved with, it is unbelievable. I don't think a single student here at tech would feel out of place if they made the effort to find a group with their simialr intersets. Most students wear what is comfrotable, from sweat pants and tees to jeans and a button-down. Different types of students do interact here. Theyr're are so many types of students here that it is almost impossible for someone not to. Most Texas tech students are from the surrounding area, or cities across Texas State. The financial background that is most prevalent is middle-class and mid-upper class students. Students here at tech are politically aware and active. There are sevaral politicaly groups on campus and they put on events and advertise frequently.

Kyle

If you are looking for a certain organization...we have it. If not, get a group of people and go register it. It's that simple.

Jamie

I don't have any specific experiences. To be honest, probably any minority. However, I feel that everyone can find their place or "niche" at Tech, and Texas Tech is really pushing for diversity. Most students wear jeans, flip-flops, and a Tech or greek t-shirt. Yes different types of students interact. One is full of the greek or involved people. One is full of a bunch of randoms. The third is full of socially awkward people. And the last is filled with minorities. Tech students are really from all over, especially since Tech is so far away from most Texas cities, yet so close to other states. Probably middle class Yes students are politically aware because we have a huge "free speech" area that is constantly bombarded by politicians and whatnot.

Devin

I honestly believe that Tech has very few issues related to race, religion, socio-economic backgrounds, etc. Most students are very welcoming and West Texas just, in a way, brings the "niceness" out of you. I do believe that some students are not well informed on political issues. They usually just go with the majority or what their parents believe. Being in Texas, and in a conservative part of the state, I would say that most students are more right wing. You do see many cliques around but most are willing to open up to others. Money does not seem to be a big issue. Everyone is too busy having a good time in college to think about that, which may not be such a good thing.

Royce

To tell the truth, some of the greek families, in particularly the religious fraternities, are extremely creepy and strange, but I'm okay with the other groups. I would say that a Muslim-American might feel out of place, but that's about it. Most students wear whatever they want to to class, with the exception of greek family pledges and ROTC member because they are required to wear specifc things on certain days of the week. Different students react all the time. The four tables are actually mixed, but you will have your segregated table or your "clique" tables, but most of the time that doesn't happen because this is college, not high school. Most Texas Tech students are from...well...Texas! Most students at Tech come from middle class to upper middle class families. Some students are politically aware/active, but I would say that most of them are apathetic. Most of the students here are right wing people but you get your occassional left wing guy/girl. Students talk about that all the time, and it usually ties in with their respected major.

Harper

I have had experiences with many groups on campus and we have strong religious groups on campus. I have heard of GLBT, but have never seen advertisement or attended any meetings and therefore I have no information about the group. Students who live a fast paced life and are looking to do whatever it takes to get by would feel out of place at tech because of the warming atmosphere. A person that does not like to talk to people, get involved or join organizations will have a hard time adjusting to Tech. Between the hours of 8 am to 10 am, many students where comfortable clothing and jump out of bed to head to class, unless it is a snowing day. Anything after 10am may result in jeans or dressier attire. The Ugg boots and shorts are in and it is hidious! Many different types of students interact in programs geared towards all students of Tech, such as Spring Fling or concerts. There are four tables at the dining hall, sorority members, engineering boys, loud crazy girls, and music students. I am a part of the loud crazy girls that just laugh and have a good time. The sorority members are dressed similar and stick together. The engineering boys are usually dressed outdated, but eat a lot. The music students are loud as well and have the weirdest conversations, sometimes breaking out in song. Many tech students are from major cities such as Houston and Dallas. Many students that are middle class or lower attend Tech. Many of us apply for scholarships or get loans to help us afford college. Students on campus are very politically aware such as the two popular organizations of young republicans and young democrates of America. Lubbock is a conservative town, but on campus there are even distributions of left and right wing students. Students rarely discuss their worth one day, we are working more towards graduating to make it to the next step.

Jackie

There are different groups and fraternities for different people on campus, you will always find somewhere to fit in. I don't think any student could feel out of place at Texas Tech. Jeans and t-shirts. Different organizations, and sports. Most Tech students are from Texas. Most people are fairly wealthy to middle class. Students are politically active/aware. predominantly left. Yes.

Karl

The students are definitely moderate heavily leaning conservative. Lubbock is hardcore bible belt conservative. The campus is more diverse. Greek life is pretty big here at Tech, I believe about 25{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the campus is Greek. They all dress alike. You can just spot them all a mile away. It's hard to explain but when you come onto the Tech campus you'll notice a Greek, you'll just know who they are. I don't know if anyone would feel out of place. I guess it just depends on what type of friends you have, if you're willing to try and make friends. IF you take the time to meet new people you should be fine.

Sara

Texas Tech is one of the most accepting campuses I have ever been to. There is something for everyone to participate in. Over 200 student organizations exist to become a part of. If you do not want to get involved in an organization, you can always hang out with your floor. If you live on campus (which you should for at least a year because ti will be an incredible experience) you will have a group of 30-50 people living on your floor. This is a great opportunity to meet people. This is much more casual than joining an organization, and can be just as much fun. I was a Community Advisor (RA) for three years, and my floors of girls always enjoyed getting to know each other, and most of the time, those were their closest friends throughout the rest of their college career. Students range from conservative to liberal, genius to smart, large cities to small towns, religious to not religious, etc. Students include the entire spectrum. Everyone will find a place to fit in at Texas Tech, and will be able to call this their home.

Brad

The majority of the Texas Tech student body's overall opinion on racial and religious groups fits with the opinions of West Texas unfortunately. I haven't had any instances where there has been comments or acts against others of a different race or religion at all. However, I think the large majority of students at Tech are white Christians. I don't know of any student that would feel completely out of place at Tech, because there are so many groups that are geared toward those of different religions, beliefs, etc. I know there is a Gay-Straight Alliance group here. But if those groups aren't enough for that person, I would say someone who is gay would probably not want to go to a school that is in this area. Most students wear casual clothes. Dressing up sticks out more often than not. You usually see the casual jeans, cargo shorts, t-shirts, hoodies, North Face fleeces, Ugg boots, etc. I've seen different types of students interacting around campus. The attitude here is laid-back and people usually are pretty friendly. Four tables of students might have: People studying with papers or laptops in front of them A few girls in a circle booth A group of guys and girls chatting it up A group of athletes There doesn't seem to be a large separation among students. People will sit wherever. Most Texas Tech students I've met seem to be from the Dallas and San Antonio area. The Dallas area must love Texas Tech because it seems like almost everyone I've met is from around there. I'm actually sort of out of place because I'm from Amarillo. The financial backgrounds that are most prevalent are the middle-to-upper class. These students are at a large university after all, so it seems to start from the middle and go up from there.

Christina

The study body consists mainly of west Texas natives and those from the Dallas area. You will find a good amount of students from Houston and San Antonio as well. There is no ethnic diversity at Tech. The demographics include 80{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} Caucasian, 12 percent Hispanic, 4{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} African American, and 2 percent Asian. Some minority students feel that they stand out a lot. But in end they always find their place and meet great people. The student body is generally very conservative with handful of students who are moderate or left leaning. But one thing is for certain there are many students who are very affluent. Never in my life have I met so many students and people who know the President of the United States of America (President Bush) on a personal bases. Many students have parents who played baseball with the president, who dine with him every so often. In my Sex and Violence class one day my professor asked how many students have met President Bush and actually spoke to him in close range. Of a class of 70 student 48 raised their hands. Never will you find that in another university. The student body also consists of many students on scholarships. There are so many scholarship opportunities for students. The financial aid office will really work with you to help you get a good education at the lowest price possible.
