What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Alexandra

I have recieved a great deal from my college education thus far. I do intend to recieve much more now that I appreciate and can value the significance of education. Education provides you with a foot into the door of your choice. It allows you to take a glimpse into your future and to the various possibilities that await you. Education frees you from an ignorant mindset. Education provides understanding and gives you the ability to be an expert in your field of study. It allows you to work through today and gives you the ability to be a success tomorrow. Education shows that you care enough about yourself and future, to want to invest into it. With education you now have a head-start in life which translates into knowledge which you can retain forever. If you possess knowledge you are more informed, thus, you are able to make better, more informed decisions. As a result of those decisions, you will have a higher quality of life. Education is independence. You won’t have to rely on others to feed you with information, you are able to obtain it on your own then run away with it.

I learned how to be determined and don't give up.

I have had the best college experience at Pennsylvania State University. The professors were student-oriented and cared about us succeeding. I have just applied will be a new student at UMUC so I do not have much to say about it in regards to college experience. I know it offers flexible class schedules and online courses that better accomodates the working adult pursuing and education.

Working as a family Physician for 27 in Albania , district of Korca, was a good experience and the most value in this world, is to serve the others, what I did. My wife gott a lottary ,and three of us, my son 21 years old, my wife and me, came to America five years ago, for a better life. Think that, out of my college experience in Albana ,Carnegie Institute,Troy, MI, that I am attending, is a amazing exprience, to obtain a certificate as Cardiovascular Technologist. However ,I em exitig ,teachers are perfect, but it is to expensive for me, 15000 dollers. Financial aid is not enogh for me, my son is in Oakland Community College too, my wife is lay off. Working as patient sitter at Henry For Hospital in Detroit, salary 25000 dollars a year. That will be a big appreciation from me, if I am chosen for 5000. Thank you for this opportunity.

John

My college experience has been awesome! The first thing I learned in college was how to write. College certainly teaches one how to write. College also teaches one to be disciplined, responsible, and accountable. I have also learned how to analyze what I read from my critical thinking class. College is teaching me different ways to solve different problems, and to find different solutions to problems. I am currently in my sophmore year, and returning to college is the best decision I have made for myself.

Michelle

I have been able to learn about my field of study in a flexible learning environment. I have been mentored by professionals in may fields and given the opportunity to expand my mind and my way of thinking. I have learned to think outside the box when approaching challenges and allow myself to fail when there was no other option. I quickly learned to stand back up and appraoch the task at hand with a positive attitude and mind.

Chasity

I attended Murray State University for a year, and did the typical college student thing- party. I came home and realized that you will get no where in life by partying. Plus I have always wanted to be a nurse, and I knew that if I didnt buckle down and do good in college that I would be working in a dead end job. I wanted to help others and see them recover from various illnesses or injuries. I also wanted a job that was stable and still there when the economy was going down. There is always a need for nurses. Plus in college I have met some really great people and professors. I have valued the experience more and more everyday, to make a life for myself.

Michele

What I have learned from attending UMUC on line classes is there is nothing in life which comes easy yet I am discovering that I have the tools and the strength to face challenges, overcome obstacles and earn grades. By applying myself to the assignments, I am beginning to understand the importance of a quality education and how an quality education has the potential to positively shape my life.

Darci

Because I am attending the University of Maryland University College I was able to be paid more for a job I was already doing. In addition I am able to be home with my daughter at night and do my homework at the same time she does her homework. If I were attending night school there would be at least two nights a week that I would not see my daughter. She is seventeen and going off to college in a year herself. I want an education ad this allows me to pursue that goal without sacrificing my family. I am a single Mom and I am very proud of the way I have raised my daughter and now that she is older I can concentrate more on what I want out of life and still be a good mother to her. I find the classes to be extremely organized and the intructors to be readily available via e-mail.

Melody

What I have gotten out of my college experience is that it has given me a sense of appreciation and confidence. Having a bachelor's degree opens doors to many opportunities, whether it be job opportunities or a chance to take my education at the next level. Also, it has been valuable to attend college due to academic and cultural experiences gained . These are xperiences that will last me for a lifetime! More importantly, attending college has allowed me to become a better person overall.

Kellie

I am just now starting my college experience in the Summer 2010 semester, so at this moment i can not say what i have recieved out of it, but i can tell you what i am hopeing to get and how it will be valuable to me. I am hoping to get a in dept, challenging education that i can take further into a masters and then into a P.sD. The reason that it is valuble to me is because this is my chance to obtain and education and better myself and to work towards a degree in counseling that i will be able to help many indiviuals and give back to the community , and to help those as i have been. I will say i had to overcome a lot of abstacles to get here and it is extremely valuble to me that i am able to have a chance to better myself so i then can help others do the same.

Cheryl

I have learned that I can do it. I can graduate with a four year degree and a good GPA. I am prould to say that I will be able to set an example for my children. They will know when I say you should go to college that it was important enough to me that I worked to finish for 12 years. I have learned better study habits, self motivation, and responsiblity. I have to do the work, and turn it in on time. It is something only I can do.

Angela

Since I started attending college I've found a new me that I didn't know exsisted before. I enjoy reading my texts books and discovering information I would have ignored in high school. I have noticed less procrastination in myelf. Since I started college I have seen growth in myself that I wasn't sure I was capable of before. I am more sure of myself and much less timid. I would never replace all the knowledge I have gained for anything. It's priceless to me.

Rene

I have only just begun my college education. I have just recently finished my orientation but, what I have learned is that I have the determination to and drive to go forth with it. It is valuable to me to pursue my education so I can better myself. I have put my education on hold for many years for my family and children and it is now my turn to better myself through education.

Angela

My college experience has been incredible and allowed me to find myself within a career and educational degree. Obtaining my degree from UMUC has allowed me to stay focused and obtain a career that makes an oustanding salary, interesting and successful. It is extremely valuable to attend college because it allows a student to form their future, construct the path they want to have a successful career and education. Education is the key to success.

Paula

My college experience has given me a feeling of self-worth, a craving ambition to obtain a degree to use in job opportunities that awaits me. As far back as I can remember I have had a burning desire to work in either a museum or at an embassy in my local city. One requirement is a history major. I realize that my age (I am 56) might be an obstacle however by going for the gold I am just a year or two away from working in either an embassy or museum. B. C. , (before college) I might as well have been a million miles from a college. Another experience I have seen is my understanding of myself and how I can make or break myself. College keeps me at the ready, keeps my head above water and too, shows me daily what can be instead of what is in my life. Right now my personal life is mentally crippling. It could be said that it is on a downward spiral. I am not so caught up in issues surrounding me but more so looking at the bright future that beckons me closer and closer like a neon light.

Nikilyn

I take all my classes online so it is very easy for me to fit finishing my degree into my busy lifestyle.

Alexandra

I've gotten many things out of my college experience and I'm merely a sophomore. I've learned that most students take two roads when first starting college; the first, and the more unfortunate, road is when students enroll in college, join a sorority/fraternity, and completely let their studies become replaces with partying. The second road (the one I'm in) is when students take their studies seriously because they know getting good grades and graduating college are the keys to being succesfull. I've learned to value money because I've had to take out two student loans to pay for school. I've learned how to meet different people and make friends. Also, I've learned that giving 100{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of your effort in school is more important than wasting this time of my life on partying.

Kasia

My college experience has shown me that hard work pays off. I am a wife and mother, and now a college student. I made a difficult choice by going back to school to earn my bachelors degree. My college experiences have been eye opening and definitely changed my outlook on life. I have learned to appreciate this experience and apply it to my everyday life. The college life has taught me to preserver through all things. What you learn in college will help you function and excel in the real world. The main reason I decided to attend University of Maryland University College is to show my children that all things can be done if you put your mind to it. I want them to understand that being persistent is vital in becoming successful in life. I want my life to be an example of what to do and what not to do. One thing they will learn from my life is "Choices have consequences". My decision not to attend college right from high school is something I have always regretted. I am now able to rectify that situation by earning my degree now.

Christine

Take education more seriously because without it, there really isnt a great career ahead of you these days. Balance having fun and being studious a little better. Most importantly, believe in yourself and don't put other peoples needs in front of your own!

Jessica

If I had the chance to go back and talk to myself while I was still in high school, I would tell myself to take advantage of the opportunity to get a free education while it was still being offered. I would tell myself to go directly into college, you have no idea how hard it is to go back once you have been out of school for so long. There are placement tests about stuff you know now but will forget about in a few short years. You could learn so much more if you keep your brain stimulated and keep on learning. I would tell myself, not to waste time. By the time you are 24 years old you could have a masters degree or you could just be getting started. I would tell myself that Ive seen how it is on one side and it could have been a lot better if I would have applied myself. I wouldn't let the senior me deny college and start working. I would have told her all about UMUC and told her how easy it will be to go to college and still have a life.

Rajiv

I believe if I were able to go back in time, I would tell my former self to relax. I remember making a lot of mistakes in a lot of different situations such as social, educational, and even professional. Number one thing when being emersed in a new environment away from home is to just be yourself and not worry about what others may think of you. You can't please everyone, so don't try to. Life on your own becomes much happier when you can accept yourself as you are, and not as what everyone else wants you to be.

Shelby

My adjustment difficulties are not the typical ones that are commonly thought of such as staying out too late, putting off assignments, or partying. For me, they have been more subtle. As my classmates are typically working adults adding degrees later in life, I have felt more intimidated in class. If I could give myself advice, it would be to be more outgoing and voice my needs, concerns, and opinions. I would tell myself to view the experiences of my classmates as another source of information instead of something to fear. We are all in the same class, with the same goal. With this fear behind me, I would spend more time in study groups and sharing my insights in class as well as asking questions. My willingness to participate more freely in class would not only have aided that portion of my grade but brought answers to my concerns more readily. Therefore, the main advice I could have offered myself and benefited from, would be to not be afraid, take a chance, speak up, and learn from others!

Kristen

Personal choices that I have made have brought about many blessings and many setbacks. I have had the chance to live in and visit places all over the world and I would not trade that experience for anything. However, this journey has caused my college education to span eight years and six different colleges. With this in mind, I would advise my senior self to buckle down and get it done. I would recommend going to college, living in the dorms, and finishing in the normal four year period. Although my life has been exciting and fulfilling, traveling could have waited until my education was complete.

Stephanie

There are many things that I would tell myself if given the opportunity to go back in time to visit myself as a senior in high school. The first thing I would tell myself is to take my education seriously. When I was a senior in high school, I was pregnant with my first child. I figured that all chances of college were out of the question for me. I put my education on hold and decided that if I could only be a mother, then I would be a good one. However, I wish I could have explained to my younger self that just because I was a mother did not mean that I had to give up on my education. I would have told myself to hang in there. If I could graduate high school after having a child, I could graduate college too. I also would have reminded myself to use the resources available to me to find out information on scholarships along with grants, and to never take the easy way out. I do not regret the choices that I have made for experience becomes knowledge and wisdom. I feel that I have gained both.

Dominique

I would emphasize more on the importance of studying because that is a major part of getting your degree because you need to understand the information in order to pass the classes. I would have also applied for more scholarships because the cost of school is not cheap.

Ashley

If I was a high school senior and was able to go back and talk to myself about the transition between high school and college the main thing I would say is, it is not as bad as everyone says it is. Teachers want you to pay attention so they tell the class that what they are teaching is going to be very useful in college so that you will worry and pay attention. I remember that teachers kept saying that college professors do not write notes on the board, that they lecture and you have to take notes off what they say. Out of all of the classes I have had I never had to go off just what they said. So, do not worry about the future because you are prepared more then you think and once you get through your first semester you will realize that there was no reason to worry throughout high school.

Michele

The advice I would give is to not give into the peer pressure to boys and have sex early. Although, I love my son dearly. I wish I would have waited to "sow my wild oats" first. It took me til 1998 to return to school to pursue any post secondary education. It is hard to balance a child, working and school being single. But, " I DID IT!!!" I am truly blessed to have a son that is so well rounded, smart, disciplined, a college student at Bowie State and an Army Reservist.

Justin

If i could go back in time and tell my self anything, I would tell my self to be situationaly aware of everything you do. In my life in the military that phrase is so commonly used that it almost loses its important message. I would tell my self that everything you do has an effect on your life. I would tell my self that nothing worth having comes easy. I would also tell myself to buckle down and focus on my studies and dont give into immediate gradification. There is a time for partying and hanging out with your friends and stuff of that nature but it is so important for your future that you pay attention to your college work. I would also tell my self to not be afraid to be alone in your views, stand up for what you believe in no matter what people may say about you. Being a leader means you stand out in front of everyone, not following the herd.

Liz

I did not go to college right out of high school so the first thing I would tell myself is to seriously consider attending college straight out of high school. I would tell myself to take time when weighing my options and find a school that does not have a reputation for being a "party school". Colleges that offer high academic expectations as well as extra curricular activities is the way to go. You end up with a better education and your hard work is worth the dedication. Having social time is also important to a degree so a school that offers clubs, sports, and other events would be a good choice. When choosing a school it is also important to find one that offers many disciplines to choose from. A wide range of academic disciplines can give you a good idea of what you are looking for based on your interests. I was lucky enough to find UMUC which offers all of these things plus the added convenience of online learning. IAs I look into graduate school for my future I will follow my own advice to choose the best school for me.

Galen

If I could go back in time to my senior year in high school, I would change my mindset to prepare to go to college right after high school. Not having that mindset made it difficult for me to mentally prepare for going to college. Even when I did enroll, I was distracted by a job that I regret taking (as I look back) and left school....for the first time. I was later distracted by my responsibilities as a husband and father after re-enrolling at a four-year institution, so I thought I'd have to wait until my children had graduated from college before I continued my education. But here I am! I have 2 sons in college (1 senior; 1 junior) and I'll be a sophomore due to the number of credits that did not transfere. But I take full responsiblilty for that. If I had the right mindset, I could have graduated with my Master's degree by 1992.

Nichol

As a high school senior, I thought college life would be the time to move away from my parents, become independent, and pay for school however I could. Now, I look back on my time in the first 2 years of college and see that it was not the time to become independent. It is much better to ask your family and advisors for guidance. However, since I felt so "independent", I applied for private loans to cover my school expenses and rent; I spent the money I worked 3 nights per week for on outings with friends; and I neglected some classes that I thought didn't matter. Now I would tell myself that college is the only key to obtaining a good job and alot of those good jobs request to see your transcripts to be sure that you were in good academic standing. So, focusing on studies and incorporating a little bit of fun is good and it's healthy. Living "independently" on student loans and spending frivolously for 4 years is not healthy nor worth the amount that will be paid back. College can easily be taken for granted so do it right the first time.

Hermetta

The advice I would give myself as a highschool senior would be apply for more scholarships , visit the prospective colleges, speak and interact with students enrolled at the college and don't settle . I was very active in highschool but I did not take advantage of any grants or scholarships that may been afforded to me if had applied for them and had been more assertive. As a result I am now in debt with over $30,000 in student loans, and have no means at this time to repay the loan. I didnt attend any of the school forums at the highschool which would have provided me with information on making better choices on the colleges to attend , nor did I take advantage of visiting any prospective colleges , as as a result I attended a college that I felt at the time was the best decision for me , but once I attended the college I became frustrated with the environment and the administration.

Jennifer

My college life has had many twists and turns. I did not start in college right after high school. I had to pay for college myself. My parents made good money and I could not qualify for grants. My parents did not want me to take out a school loan. So I worked fulltime at various jobs to make money for school. When I did have money to go to school I could only go half time. I would go half time for a year or two and then I would stop, because the work load with school and a full time job was a lot to keep up. When I reached my 30s, I decided I would jump and take out a school loan so I could take classes and work less. And I survived. This year I am going to attend school fulltime with the help of a school loan I recieved. I am so excited about finishing my education and having a better job. I would tell my high school senior self to go for it. School is very important and fun. Apply for every scholorship, take out all the loans you want and achieve your dreams.

Alixandria

Knowing what I know now, I would tell myself to begin applying for colleges immediately. I waited too long and missed out on a great deal because I was too afraid to apply to some of dream colleges. Now, however I?m trying again and I?m attempting to get my life back on track. However, if I was able to travel back in time, I would tell myself not to wait and to apply to all those colleges I dreamt about ? no matter how much of a long shot it seemed like. Being afraid of being turned down has held me back and kept me from doing a great many things, but maybe if I could break that cycle early? things might go a bit better for me.

Paul

Don't become a parent at a young age

Constance

I would have to say, the best advice I could have received would have been to first find an advisor that I trust, that I feel is competent and that I feel truly cares about my education. I would then have told myself to focus on what I feel is important to me, what I care about and make that my major straight away. At that time online classes were not as common, but I would have asked myself what I feel is the best way for me to learn, on my own or by in-class instruction? These few guidelines would have helped me for sure, how much it would have helped exactly will never be known. I do feel that if someone out there learns in a similar way that I do and feels unsure about what they should pursue as their major then these questions and advice would have made a difference to me and can make a difference in their educational future.

tracey

I would tell myself to study harder that a college education is extremely important, and that it's alot easier to go to college straight out of high school rather than waiting 20 years later like I have. If you want to have a good career college is extremely important! Study, Study, Study

Cari

I would tell myself to GO FOR IT! I did not attend college after graduating from high school because of fear and doubts about surviving college life. Put your fears aside and jump in! I have lived with regret for not going to college when I had the chance. There are so many resources at colleges, not to mention family, to help with your transition. No one wants to see you fail. You may fall down, but just get back up and keep walking. There are people around to help hold you up. You'll be a better person for just trying!

AMANDA

When I was a high school senior I had a much different view on education, I just was not interested in continuing my education. To be quite honest I had a very hard upbringing and was more concerned with trying to get away from my house and all the stress than studying. So when I was younger my grades were never great, altough they were not bad either, just average. So this is what I considered myself, an average student, who had difficulty studying. I believed I would not be any more successful if I went on to college. Having lived on my own and worked many jobs always making just enough to get by I decided to go back to school. I would tell myself to take my education more seriously if I was advising a younger me, maybe a high school freshman. I do believe though that it was the difficulties I had on my own that motivated me to take education seriously, and without that experience I would have remained an average student. So I would tell my high school senior self nothing, because I believe the choices I made then have made me very successful now.

Melissa

Going to CSUMB from a high school senior to a college freshmen was a huge leap being that in high school we werent prepared well enough for college. i wish if i had talked to myself as a senior i would of took my education as more as to my future and not a place were i hung out with my friends. Taking advice from many of my teachers was very benificial. i wish i would have followed it . All the "read your books with a lot of attention", "check your work twice", and " make sure to never procrastinate". High school was a good memorie but worrying more about hard work at school is better than working on how "fun" high school should have ended. i believe the saying "hard work pays off" or "goes a long way" is very true. Fun will always be around but education should always come first and should be done right and with effort.

Erica

"The sun will still shine honey," I'd say to myself. "After today when the robe is gone and the pretty balloons have flown away there is still tomorrow and you'll have to prepare. You have a bright future and its full of excitement and potential. What they say is true, you really can do anything if you put your mind to it. There's so much out there waiting beyond the bend, not all bad but not all good either and you have to keep your eyes on the prize and your feet on the ground. There will be time to fly but right now you need to focus on what is important. The next four years will be a whirlpool of choices and you have the power to make the ones that will bring you great prosperity and ones that will bring you down. College is not a bad place. Don't be afraid to take chances. Don't be afraid of the hard stuff. Listen to yourself, not others trying to hold back your potential. Never do anything that you know you will regret from the start. Remember we have to live your life, not others."

Cristie

If I were able to travel back in time and talk to myself I would certainly encourage myself to persue my dream. Not long before graduating with my associates degree from community college I had the opportunity to take the sheriffs department exam. I didnt take it. I never took it. I would tell myself to stop making excuses and take the exam. I regret not becoming a police officer. If only I could have known then what I know now!

Christopher

Go to college early and study hard. Do not stop even when the times get tough.

Yana

If I had a chance to come back in time, I would 1. work on improving my writing, analytical, and communication skills 2. take a few financial courses to avoid having debt 3. buy a used car instead of a new ones 4. explore a variety of physical activities to stay in shape

Adjoa

I will encourage myself to take advantage of more program

Ralph

If I could go back into time and talk as a high school senior, I would say college is a higher level of intellectual study and we will need better understanding and foresight to acheive the goal at hand. College is an institution for the proiment student who set their aims high and acheive his or her goal. To make this transition possible we must grow into matured adults. Try to aquire a college certificate or degree at any cost. Learn that patience is a virture and must be cultivated.

Jiminey

Take as much time as you need to make the right decision, because you will know it when it happens. Every one else will be pressuring you to choose a major or a college and you're still young, so take your time. When they end up with a degree that they do not want and have wasted the last four years of their lives on something that does not matter to them, you will know that you did what was right. College is easy if you make the proper adjustments. Senior year was really easy and you didn't have to try very hard, but you will need to manage your time better, and the future you knows you can be anything that you set your mind to.
