In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  3. Must be a high school senior or older.
  4. Must be a resident of Alaska.
  5. Must have unmet financial need of at least $500.
  6. Must be enrolled or planning to enroll in an undergraduate degree or vocational certificate program at a qualifying institution in Alaska.
  7. Must be enrolled at least half-time

Description: This award is for Alaska resident undergraduate students who are enrolled in an undergraduate degree or vocational certificate program at a qualifying Alaska institution. The student must be enrolled at least half time and display a minimum unmet financial need of $500.

Additional Information: The Alaska legislature created the AlaskAdvantage Education Grant Program (AEG) to provide need-based financial assistance to eligible Alaska students attending qualifying postsecondary educational institutions in Alaska. Qualifying applicants will be prioritized based on financial need. Students with the highest financial need will be awarded in order of need until funds are exhausted. To calculate financial need, the Expected Family Contribution from the ISIR and any available non-self help aid is subtracted from the Standard Alaska Cost of Attendance. The Standard Alaska Cost of Attendance is the average annual cost of tuition and required fees at the University of Alaska system for both full-time and half-time attendance, plus the annual average cost of living for both dependent and independent students. The program was specifically designed to set aside a portion of available grant funds as priority awards for applicants who demonstrating exceptional academic preparation for higher education (as documented by top quartile SAT or ACT scores), and for otherwise eligible applicants who are enrolled in qualifying workforce shortage programs: Allied health sciences; Community or social service; and Teaching; and Process industries/natural resources extraction support.

Award Amount: Grant awards typically range from $500 to $4,000 annually. Awards are not automatically renewable. Recipients may re-apply each year by completing the FAFSA each year.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $4,000.

Additional information about this award is available from the Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education website. Students apply for the AlaskAdvantage Education Grant by completing a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov, at high school guidance offices, and at college financial aid offices. The FAFSA should be completed as soon as possible and no later than June 30 each year.
