Award Amount

This award covers tuition, fees, and the cost of textbooks at an eligible institution. Awards are renewable for up to a total of four academic years.


The number of awards offered varies annually. All eligible students will be considered. In the the most recent for which data is available, there were 20 scholarships awarded.

Additional Information

The purpose of the Alabama Scholarship for Dependents of Blind Parents is to cover instructional fees and tuition at an Alabama state institution of higher learning for children from families in which the head of the family is blind and whose family income is insufficient to provide educational benefits. Family income must not be greater than 1.3 times the current poverty income level, as determined by federal poverty guidelines based upon the number of family members. Students must be initiated into the program within two years after high school graduation, but in no case after the 23rd birthday and be completed within five years after its initiation, excluding any delays caused by military service. Awards may not extend beyond the student's 30th birthday.
