What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Candace

Hindsight maybe twenty-twenty, but the Butterfly Effect is far reaching and can never be duplicated. That is why even if, I was given the opportunity to go back in time to talk to my high school senior self, I would remain silent. Going into my third year of college, and beginning to focus on choices for possible minors and career paths, I have started to recognize how my past choices have affected my future. I have to validate my future choices with their past counterparts. And, while transitioning from high school youth to college young adult or even Tri-state resident to New Englander, I have, admittedly, made mistakes. However, we are a total accumulation of our past experiences and I would not give up the experiences from my first two years of college for anything. I might not have met my freshman roommate who recently passed, Caitlyn (God Rest), joined the mixed martial arts club, or learned that in New England, rain boots are required. My experiences may not have been easy, but I have learned from them all. So, I might go back in time but only to observe because I would hate to spoil the lessons.

I would adive myself to study hard. Do good on SAT and ACT exam.

Jarrett

If I went back in time and saw myself as a high school senior, I would give myself a background about what happens after high school. How you have to step up to the plate and sometimes need to make your own choices in life. Nobody can always be at your side to help you. College is fun and a great experience but you have to be mature in some of the moments that happen. Enjoy your last year of high school because you will never get to do it again. Have fun, act stupid, get good grades, graduate with your head held high knowing that you accomplished another milestone in your life. Never regret anything and push yourself when you feel like you aren't "capable" of meeting the expectations. You've always met the expectations needed of you and sometimes have gone beyond them. Pay attention to what the guidance counselor says and if you don't know something or you're confused...ASK QUESTIONS.

Marie

Younger version of me you should have done a few things differently when you started school. One, you should try to make friends. Two, you should join a club. Three, you should choose a workstudy job where you can sit. Four, explore the city, take a random bus.

Jonathon

Put great emphasis on time-management and applying for scholarships. The two biggest transitional problem areas are living on your own and motivating yourself to accomplish everyday tasks and assignments. When most students fail out of college, it's not because they weren't smart enough. They were accepted; obviously they have some brains, but with so many people and social events going on, it's hard not to lose yourself in the fun and excitement. You're on your own in a new place trying to make friends; its easy to see how one can forget about assignments and meetings. One must set aside time, preferrably right after class, to do their work and study. This will allow them to retain as much information as possible and get there work done before plans for the night begin. As mentioned earlier, scholarships are also extremely important. While at school, especially in your first year, you don't want to be worrying about paying for school and having a job; so much time is spent in each of these areas. One should fill out scholarships everyday so more time can be put towards schoolwork; you are there for an education.

Matthew

I would try to avoid as much debt as possible. Being saddled with thousands of dollars in student loans makes it very difficult to correctly choose a company or job following graduation. Rather than being concerned with happiness, goodness of fit, or any other intrinsic motivator, I simply looked for the highest paying job once I graduated. With this mindset, I cared more about the grade I received in each class than in the actual content of the class lectures. Money was the motivating factor behind everything. Debt is slavery. Avoid it at all costs.

Out of the 3 and a half years I have attended this university, I gained so much in my industry. Since Johnson & Wales is a career focused school, all students are required to do an industry-related internship for each of our Associates degree as well as our Bachelor's degree. We also don't have to take liberal arts classes that don't relate to our given major; the first two years at this school are focused on our major just as much as our last two years which is a great benefit when looking for a job related to our major. Between the classes and internships, JWU prepares us for the real world after graduation by preparing us BEFORE we graduate.

Steven

I have learned a lot about my field in culinary arts as every one nows Johnson and Wales is on the top 3 universitys for culinary arts. I have also been able to have a feel for the envirements I would be in if I was working at a restaurant or kitchen. This has helped me improve my skills and has shown through my hard work at college.

Lillian

So far, I've gotten some pretty rewarding opportunities out of my college experience. I've had the opportunity to work with under-privleged city kids at an after-school program. Because of that opportunity, I got my job, which is also incredibly rewarding. I'm a Girl Scout Leader for the GSRI Urban Outreach program. Working with younger girls is incredibly rewarding, because I get to help them become better students, leaders, and stronger people. Another opportunity I'm thankful for is the opportunity I've been given to meet people in the industry I hope to enter upon graduation. Getting to meet business owners, managers, and supervisors now allows me to learn more about the industry, and to get my name out there. I've had the opportunity to work with leading industry professionals, and hopefully I can land a job working for one of them when I graduate.

Emily

My first class starts tomorrow and I am looking forward to learning so much and getting to know my fellow peers. By attending college for Administrative Assistant A.A.S. I hope to better my lot in life so that I may down the road be able to help others achieve their goals.

carl

i know that now i have to look more into school when i was told we had no friday classes that was a lie because we culinary students have class on selcted fridays and i thibk that was a bold face lie and a let down to the students. also the amount to attend this school is so not cool.

Ashley

While attending college I have gotten better at time management and how to buy things on a very low budget. These are both important to know because in my profession time management is very important when baking multiple things at once. Buying on a budget is important also because there will be times in everyones life when money is tight and saving is most important. It has been valuable to attend this college because if I want to continue my career in the culinary feild education is the key. I am hoping that my education will open a lot of doors for me to work and learn new things that I could not learn in school. All this education and learning will eventually lead to me to open my own bakery and become very successful.

Joffrey

I have gotten allot of things in my short experience such being open to new people and ideas. Just because I person way seem very different then you does not mean you do not have allots in common. That's one reason why college is so valuable you just don't learn about your majors; you learn about other people's backgrounds and way of life. Another thing I have gotten out my college experience is just enjoy your time there. If you are going to a place for four years you have to at least enjoy it. College is a totally different experience then high school.

Jordan

I will be honest, I have made mistakes during my college career thus far. In the beginning, i didn't know what i was getting myself into. I was unepared for the hard work and stamina it takes to be a full time student. Not only this, but I was completely unsure of what I wanted to major in right after high school. After not doing so well for a semester, i took some time off to get a job and see what the real world was like. I worked in retail for a shoe store for a little over a year and realized that it was certainly not what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I wanted to be more successful than that, I wanted to make a name for myself. So I switched jobs to something different (that was a little bit more flexible), and went back to school at a community college. I raised my grades and took classes to figure out what i wanted to major in, and transferred to a respectable college in Rhode Island. Its important to get an education to be a successful and educated business woman.

Tina

I have been to college once before and recieved my associates degree in Applied Science, which allowed me to practice Radiologic Technology. This education was wonderful for me at the time, because I was a young single mother. It gave me the privledge of having a job to support myself and my daughter. I am attending a community college until August, which then I will be starting my undergraduate study at D'Youville College in the Physicians Assistant Program. College now is not only giving me an education, it is also giving my children a positive rolemodel to look up to. My children can see that an education is priceless at any age. The first education I recieved help give me the courage and knowledge I need now to pursue my new goals. When I am finished with school I will be a positive role model for my whole family, because I have been the first person in my entire family to pursue college, and I will have a Master's Degree. I will also have the privledge of using my education and applying it in the real world, by helping patients!

Christine

I've learned a lot of valuable knowledge and resources that will help me when I'm out in the industry.

Crystal

So far i have been able to work on my public speaking, and writing skills. I have met a lot of people with the same intrests i have. It is valuble because it is important to get a college degree, and make life long friends.

Nijat

I am majoring in Hospitality major. What I have learnt that most valuable is not from the lines of the book but from my experience while I had interaction with people near aroud. Hospitality is all about helping other people, wahever form of it implies. And by currency interest unbased hospitality, humanity that people losing could be found back. I hope I can apply this idea in my future career.

Lindsey

What have I gotten out of my college experience? I have learned how to write better and navigate a computer. It has been a great experience for me in my first semester . This is my first year attending Snead State Community College. Why has college been valuable to attend? BecauseI love my teachers and all the support I get from them. The school is very helpful in helping me find some possible ways of getting a scholarship. I want to further my education. I has been tough trying to pay for my first semester with only a $800 pell grant. I would love to have a scholarship to help me finish my education. I am married with no kids. I just need help in finishing my education.

Kelsey

I strongly believe that attending Johnson and Wales University will be one of the smartest decisions I've ever made. As a freshman here at JWU I have already gained invaluable experience within my major. The university has many student clubs and organizations related to every major. Being a sports/entertainment/event management major, I have decided to get involved with the Special Events Society and the Coaching Athletic Administration and Professional Sports Club. Both of these clubs have provided me with several volunteer opportunities, as well as, various experience gaining activities. For instance, with the Coaching Athletic Adminisration and Professional Sports Club, I helped co-organize an all day basketball tournament on campus. Through SES I volunteered at several different events held throughout Rhode Island, like the Newport Food and Wine Festival and the annual Monster Dash Race. In addition to the various clubs and organizations, as a freshman I was immediately thrown into my major. In other words, instead of having to wait until my junior or senior year to have classes in my major, I am able to begin as a freshman which allows me to see whether or not I truly enjoy my chosen major.

Kaitlin

I have gained so much out of my experiences at college. I have gained life-long friends, met people who are very valuable to my success outside of college, and had a lot of fun along the way. College is not only important because of the social aspect of it, but also because of the amount of life experiences that you gain by going out and living on your own. I have become so much more independent and self-sufficient since going to school and I have grown so much. College really is a once in a lifetime experience and its something that everyone needs to go through, it prepares you so much for your future in so many ways. College roommates teach you just how much patience you actually have by having to put up with someone who has an opposite sleeping & class schedule, and how to understand where other people are coming from because of how you are basically forced to get along with them. Overall, college was a great experience; my only regret is going through it so fast!

Brittnee

So far out of my college experience I have gotten really positive and helpful things out of it such as getting to no the kitchen more. How things work in the kitchen, how it's opporated, how to cook different dishes in different ways, overal how it's ran. Besides my school work I would say that the most important thing that I got from my college experience is overal how to be a better person. Since my first year of college I can really tell that I have changed and matured alot from when I was in high school, which is a wonderful thing. I was always the shy perosn in high school and never really said anything to my really close friends. When I graduated from high school I made sure that I would attend college out of state so that I would see how things where in other places that I have never been before. Now I'm more out spoken, I'm talk-a-tive, I have more friends, people enjoy being around me more. So I think that me coming to school out of state really helped me out alot in the long run.

Josh

My college experience has many ups and downs. College can be alot of fun, but it also is a lot of work. I attended a junior college in Minnesota where I played baseball and had a full load of classes and never took less then 16 credits per semester. I was able to play baseball full time, go to every class and never missed a day, and even had a lot of time to party and hang with friends. I had many nights where I would not sleep because I had to study for a couple tests or I got back late from a baseball game late and had to finish some of my homework. Every person should be required to attend college. College is not only for getting a good education, but it is a place to meet a lot of great people and a place where you get a lot of great memories. At any college you will meet a wide variety of people that will be your friends for the rest of your life. Your college friends will spend the last 2 or 4 years of life with you. Go to college you will not regret it.

alexandria

Currently Iam going in to college. But I am hoping to get a great education and a life experience. Going into the culinary arts I hope to learn lots about the arts and in the process make some new freinds. The school is a great school so I feel honored to be atending this school. In high school i wasnt the best student and I always told myself that i would never get into college, but now being accepted and registed in this school it gives me hope and thats a great feeling. So far it has valued me by showing that I dont have to go to a high culinary arts school. I can get the same education in a Tech school. But right now I dont have alot of money to attend. I only make ends meat. But I hope that this school can give me a great eduaction, a fun experience, and to gain some new freinds. So please choose me I would be honored

jessica

College has taught me to trust myself, my opinions, and to look at the world three-dimentionally. It's very difficult to apply critical thinking skills when you've spent your whole life being told to see everything in one particular way. College has taught me new ways of viewing the world, and it has taught me to be confident in my perceptions, to always questions truth, and to see value in differences.

Darius

I havent attended currently, but i hope to get a new experience in my major which is Culinary Arts as well as make new and trustworthy friends. Stay connected and network with teachers and faculty at the school.

Diana

When I hear my mother crying in the kitchen because she is unable to find a way to pay for certain necessities while I am in college, I have often wondered if it is really worth the trouble. I have just completed my freshman year and looking back, I have realized that college, once my biggest fear, is now my golden oportunity. Originally, I thought that college was just going to be about parties and friends. After this year however, I've tasted success and I've realized that college is my one opportunity to turn my life around and I know that I can do it. I've gained enthusiam and motivation because I learned how to succeed in an environment that I was terrified to begin last fall. I have become more independent after living on my own so now I know how to support myself and my mother has one less person to stress about. I was immature in high school but college has turned me into an adult with goals in life. At this point, I appreciate everything in life ten times more since college and I would give anything to obtain enough money to return.

Jessica

So far i have learned that college is a reality check. It makes a young immature person grow up and realize that mommy and daddy are not always going to be there to save you or to call the teacher when you miss class. College is important for your future, it is waht determines if you get your dream job or not. It is valuable to attend not only because you get a better education, but you learn about new experiences, you meet new people, you experiences environments that you are not used to. College is what opens the eye to a young adult.

Derrick

I have started an educaion that will help me in attaining a degree that will help me in starting my own business when I graduate. I feel that you need an education after high school to get anywhere in this world today and by me getting that education I will be able to help myself as well as others. College experience is so different than high school, the learning classes are different not like a typical high school class room. The feeling is open and easier for the mind to learn, yes, you have work to get done but the atmosphere is more relaxed and I believebetter than normal class rooms in high school. College learning and campus life is like a business all in it self, we are there from many different places with one thing in mind to learn because we want to not that we have to because we do.

simon

"College has helped me become a better communicator and critical thinker. It has allowed me to meet many new people and hear many new perspectives." "College has helped me become a stronger leader. I've learned so much from my classes and my activities outside the classroom. It's a great opportunity to learn who you are and to prepare for the 'real world.'" "I've done so many things that I had never done before. I explored the city all by myself, took a bus to a different state and took a road trip with my school's Alternative Spring Break group. I joined a bunch of groups and activities, and I learned to get myself up in the morning!"

Nicholas

Well honestly and truely a shorter list would consist of what i didn't get out of my college exerience. As a young highschool student i was frustrated with my life and had no real career goals to pursue. As not to fall behind in the world of education I attened classes at a community college in up state NY, while working on a full time basis. It was Durring this time that i realized my passion for the food service industry. With the burden of money issues i struggled to make ends meet. It was in my heart to be a great chef but just didnt know how to go about it. It was a matter of time before i walked into the best place in town and demanded to work there for free. With my new found skill i had learned there i was confident enough to enroll at The University of Johnson and Wales and wake up everyday knowing in the words of one of my Chefs that i was "doing the right thing".

Stephanie

From attending college I have gained valuable experience and made many friendships I hope to have for a lifetime. I have figured out what I want to do in my life and after graduating.

Emily

I've never had the opportunity to work with such inviting professors who only want the best for their students. Weather it is changing your major, asking questions about jobs, or just needing someone to talk to, you will always find a helping hand at Johnson & Wales. I am only a freshman but already the professors I've had the chance to meet have taught me so much, weather it was in class or just having a conversation. Each class in the Hospitality College is geared towards your specific major and each professor has had to work in the industry. This lets the professor?s elaborate more on the realism of the jobs, not just what the books might say. Having professors who have physically worked in the field is also valuable because they have contacts within the industry, helping us even further our education with real job experiences and internships. Attending a school that is as hands-on as Johnson & Wales has not only helped me to find a job that I will be happy with and proud of but also a job that I want; not a job that I might have settled for at a different University.

Carla

Since attending Johnson and Wales University, I am only in my first year and second trimester. I made deans list my first trimester and now that the second one is coming to an end I am maintaining my status on the deans list. Its not easy for everyone to adjust to a new school or life alone away from home, and everything for me fell into place right away. The school offers so much that you can get involved with and attend, there is never a dull moment or a chance to say that nothing is going on around campus. I was extremely involved in my high school and that still hasn't changed since I came to college. I joined different national student organizations along with organizations that are specific to my major, plus at the moment I am pledging for a sorority. Being here at Johnson and Wales is shaping me into the adult and person that I want to be and viewed as an individual in society. College has been nothing but one great and valuable experience so far that I am excited to see what the future has to hold for me.

latiesha

if i could go back in time to high school and talk to myself i would tell myself to focus more . i would tell myself to focus because since i have been in college i've learned that to do well i need to focus . if i had started to focus more in high school then the transtion to college would have been much easier to me. i would have started off this school year more better than i did an i would have been ready to face all that was put in front off me in college. as i continue my college career i have started to realize how much of a responsibility my school work is which maeans my need to focus on my work has greatly increase . even though coming out of high school i didnt have the best studie habits, and like most high schoolers i was very unfocused, i am slowly becoming a more focused student with my main goal of becoming successful.

Rachel

If I could go back in time to high school, I would tell myself to listen to everyone who told me how much I would enjoy it. I would force myself to talk to other people, and join clubs. I would want to make the most out of it, instead of rushing home. Instead of worrying so much, I would have looked to go away from home, to experience all the things I have heard others talk about. I would tell myself, to try things, but in moderation. I would look for other things I would normally not be interested. They say college is a place to learn and grow, and that would be something I am finally ready to do. I want to go out and party, but I also know I have a responsibility in life. Here at home, I am always visiting my grandparents. Away from home I would want to bring my food to those people who need it most. I would tell myself don?t be afraid. Try new things, experience what you know, and especially what you don?t know. This is a chance to be on your own, make the most of it.

Joshua

The advice I would give myself would be to change the study habits I had. At first college seems like High School but it takes a harder turn in the road. I would tell myself to work hard and expect the unexpected, but most of all never give up the fight.

Sarah

If I could go back to my senior year of high school, I would advise myself to begin preparing for college sooner. I would have gone on college visits beginning junior year and making a list of potential schools. The college process is much longer than expected and I should have begun much sooner than I did. Being involved in high school helped me more than I could have imagined. My resume was fantastic due to all of my involvement. The best thing I did was meet with my guidance counselor on a regular basis to keep all of my college applications moving in a timely fashion. The best advice I could give a senior in high school is to keep working hard. Do not slack off because college doesn?t cut you any breaks. Your professors don?t care if you don?t show up to class or do your homework. You?ll fail, and nobody will do the work for you. Keep working hard and it?ll be worth it. It will get you more scholarships which means less loans and more money in your pocket. College is important so make the best decisions you can.

Jonathan

I would tell myself that it all gets better. That high school is only the beginning and that the road ahead will be tough, but well worth it. I would have told myself that getting better grades in high school would be important to colleges and to work harder than ever. I would also have told myself not to lose faith. That there are better things coming, and the wait is well worth it.

Samantha

My Advice to myself would be to live life to the fullest and to do everyting you want while still getting all my school work done . Make friends not to stay in my room with my book, i want you to get out and to experience all that the school has to offer you.

Adam

Given the oppurtunity to talk to myself as a high school senior, I would tell myself not to ever be uncertain with myself. I would let myself know that college is not a party. Its alot of hard work and dedication as well as self discipline and organization. Also, I would tell myself to keep working towards a goal, no matter what. Its crucial to have something to strive for, and I would preach that to my high school self. The transition into college is not an easy one, and I would tell myself as a high school senior to avoid temptations, and stay focused. Every day in college poses a new challenge, and there are always obstacles, but with the right mindset, anything is acheivable. I would make sure as a high school senior I understood that college is no joke, and it determines the rest of your life.

Kristen

If i could go back in time and talk to my high school senior self, there are several things i would tell myself. I would tell myself, to be open and honest with yourself. This will faciliate meeting new friends. Also attend every activity scheduled possible, you will make lots of friends at these bonding events. DO NOT procrastinate or else you will be up many a nights working on a project you could have paced yourself to do. I would also tell myself, that people will change during school and thats okay because friends will come and go, they are also trying to find themselves so try not to judge. When you get frustrated and want to give up and go home, DON'T give up. Its okay to cry but try not to stress. No matter how long it seems it has been you are still adjusting to being in a new environment. Stay, enjoy the ride but remember school work comes first, social life second. There is plenty of time for socializing sooner or later.

Tayla

If i could go back in time to talk to myself I would tell myself to take a deep breath. My senior year of high school was very stressful worrying about getting into all the colleges I wanted to go to, then actually deciding and figuring out which schools I not only like but also which schools I could afford to go to. I was so overloaded with work and high school that I didnt make time to enjoy my senior year. I didnt go to many of the events that my high school held, and I didnt make time to spend with my family who are very far away from me at the moment. I was so over prepared when I actually got to Johnson and Wales that I sent my mom home with a box of items I didnt actually need to pack. In conclusion if I could go back in time I would not worry as much and enjoy my life rather than letting it pass me by.

Maura

If I could go back in time it would be the best feeling. As a high school senior, I would have gotten my FAFSA done before March. Also I would have signed up for as many scholarships as possible. Also, I would have gotten as many grants as possible. A private college is expensive and hard to pay for, and its hard to find the right loan for you.

Christopher

If I could visit myself in highschool I would tell myself that everything will turn out okay. I would inform myself that I would be extremely happy at Johnson and Wales and that I shouldn't second guess my decision. I've learned over the year and a half since graduation that i need to be myself. It is important to make myself happy befor worrying about the happiness of others.

Amanda

I would tell myself to work harder, eventhough i never slacked at my school work. I would also have applyed for morre scholarships before i started college. and finally i would tell myself to work harder. because at the end of the day, your only as good as the amount of work you put into your goals and jobs. i would tell myself to live on campus like i am now. It offers such a great experience to make lifelong friends, and to get your first experiences away from home. i would also tell myself to be as outgoing as possible , and to take whatever oppourtunities are given to me.

Jacob

The best advice that I could give myself as a highschool senior would be to not allow anything nor anyone stand in the way of my educational goals. Circumstances may present themselves difficult to overcome, but each obstacle that I have faced, from financial difficulties to lack of transportation; each obstacle has been overcome through a willingness and determination to meet my goal and to overcome that obstacle. Obviously, I would also remind myself to plan more thoroughly and expect to encounter many obstacles that go without planning. As the saying goes, "Those without a plan, plan to fail." Each time I am confronted with a daunting task, I am reminded that through careful planning and execution, the end result leaves me more satisfied and enables me with more confidence than when I began the task. In conclusion, I know that through coaching myself with these pieces of advice prior to college, the transition to this lifestyle would have come a little easier than I have. Yet, overall I am grateful for the experience and wouldn't trade it for anything.

Amanda

Know who you are as a person. Knowing this will help you stay true to yourself and not cause you to stray away from who you are. I never got the chance to experience partying with my friends before college. I was the type of person who sat in her room and studied all night after a long three hour track practice every day. When I went to college, I wanted to experience what it was like to go to a club. Right when I walked in I loved the music and was dancing. After awhile, some guys came up to me and started dancing with me. I pushed them off and that is when I realized this is not for me. I did not want to put myself through that situation ever again. I learned who I was and what some of my values were that day. It is better to know who you are so you do not faulter when pressured into drinking, doing drugs, or other acts you are not comfortable with. My advice would be stay true to yourself. Life can only be lived once so live it up your way.

Kymber-Lyn

If I could go back now I would tell myself to relax. When I came to college my plan was get in and out as quickly as possible while maintaining a good GPA. Not because I didn't think I would enjoy college but I knew I could save money if I graduated early. Unfortunately, this view caused me to miss out a little on some of the oppurtunities for clubs and competitions at my school. That's why I would tell myself to relax, to have fun. College is a lot of work, and for anyone who thinks college is all about partying has another thing coming, but college is also an opportunity for one to spread their wings a little, a time to try new things. If you work all the time you could really miss out on some life changing experiences. I'm not saying go party, I'm saying be open to knew experiences and ideas. Go study abroad, or join some random club. This could be the last chance that many of us have to really take a step out of our worlds.

Brianna

I would tell myself to work my butt off as much as possible in high school. I would tell myself that the more money possible to have saved up the better. I would also say to save as much as you can while at school. As hard as that is to do, and as much as you want to go out and have fun, set a budget. Keep only a certain amount of money, in cash, to have each week. Use a debit card as a last resort and only for emergencies. Save the rest. I would also tell myself to find a job more than just a work study. In terms of roommates, I would tell myself to stop being a pushover and stand up for youself. If you're room's dirty, ask them to clean it. If they decide to watch TV at 4:30 A.M. tell them to turn it off. I would lastly tell myself to stdy and try harder. Strive or A's not B+'s.
