What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Christian

Finding the right college is extremly hard. i have seen many people fail out, or leave because they were unhappy. The only thing i can say is visit as many schools and the towns they are in as much as possiable go in every building smell/eat at every restruant, go into every bar drive on all the roads, becuase parents/students thats were you will want or not want to be for the next four years and that is were you will be leaving your kids. Now save before you ever have a kid it is unbelieveable the amount of food/drinking/fun they do everything that a student does cost money. Even if you like it or not they will be drinking and spending lots! I hope that i was helpful in anyway and take it from a senior the first year is the best after that you start shaping your life your job, your life long friends, a car, a place you may call home. Just remeber to always go home one day, you wont feel the same and you'll be searching for that place you call home, make one for yourself. -Thank you, Chris Lindo

John

To know what it is the student wants to major in or focus in before ataining the school.

Shannon

Make sure that you are very familiar with rules and regulations of on campus living. If you seek a job during the year, look for the job over the summer prior to school. Do your work and stay focused.

John

In choosing the right college to attend, it is vital to keep a couple of things in mind. Firstly, where could your grades and SAT scores potentially get you into. Once you figure out where you could go, it is important to visit colleges you might want to attend. Part of the college experience is being happy and you could really get a sense of how happy you will be by visiting. Another important thing to consider is always having a good time but remembering why we are at college; to get an education. Always make sure to keep up in school and never let yourself get behind. If you follow these keys, and you choose the right college, your college experience and success can be great.

Joan

Your college should fit you even if you don't necessarily know how it fits you. No matter where a student goes they are spending someone's money to go there so don't go just to party but fail all of your classes. You could stay home and party and save people a ton of money. If you need financial aid, apply for it as soon as you can, people want to go to college but it is highly expensive considering the current economic position we are in. Do not assume you have time. Your main priority should be to the best you can do in all your classes whether you make friends or not. But the memories of college largely happen with your friends. Get involved with your school and the community it's in. Meet new people but be smart and be safe. Have standards but don't be obnoxious. Parents worry but don't stress trust that you have raised a son/daughter with a good head on their shoulders and let them know you are always there to support them. Have fun and be safe !

Katie

Just make sure the college you end up choosing is the one you want to attend and makes you happy. Enjoy your life day by day and see that this is apart of growing up. There will be decisions that will and can change your life.

Nicole

What I would give them is that find something that you love to do and do it. Parents let go of your children they need to grow up and they need to explore the world and college is a great way to do that. From just being in a new state for the first time will give your children a lot of responsibilty. Like me I'm from Texas and i moved to Miami ,Florida and I love it here but I will always return home after all this is done. Then for the students I want to tell you that your going to college to learn and get an education not to party all night long and get "wasted" but to learn and get a career out of this hard work. Yes we all know most not all college students will go party all the time and skip class but why are you there then you are paying the school to go and party, think about that logic for a moment. Yes i know your away from home no parents but be samrt in what your doing your parents are trusting you to make a good descion ,follow them.

My advice to students trying to find the right college is that they take the time to find a college that will allow them the atmosphere and opportunities to find out what you want out of life and how to achieve that goal. Most students at this early age may or may not have an idea about what they want to major in or do as a career, but many do not. If they do know, then you want a school that will support and allow that to flourish. If not, then you want the services and support to find that out as well. It is really essential for students to visit the campuses, if possible, and talk to the admissions staff, eat a meal in the cafeteria and go to inquire about a service, such as finding a library book or article. This way, the student can see what it would be like to experience living and interacting in this environment. I would also observe the students on a normal school day, so you can see the type of people that attend, such as the demeanor and diversity. This is my advice.

Brittnee

never choose something your used to always go some where that is different for you

Kawanza

Be careful...choose exactly whats best for you and never settle for anything less

Shirley

Advice that i would give student finding a college is to do alot of research the major that they are interested in and look up school that are mainly focused on that major. Also find a school that has the same values as you do and the greatest piece of advice i would give is tour the school and take to students about the school, find students who absolutly love the school and find out why it is they love it so much, also find a student who doesnt particulay like the school or one who hates it, then weigh what you have learned and decide if that is the right school for you.

Shanika

Any advice that I would give students is to research a variety of colleges and not to limit themselves to just one college.

Kelsey

Students and/or parents should look at a variety of colleges. Students may be set on one school in specific but may find that they like something about another school even better. Once you pick your college it is important to get involved in the campus community. Join clubs, make friends, and enjoy what you're there to learn.

Jon

Look for more of the things you would like to do after class because every degree will get you a job but the other things you do define you as a person.

Emilee

although money is a major concideration, if you feel comfortable at a particular school, find a way to make it work there, because chances are you will find yourself there in the long run spending more money than if you chose that school in the first place. just pick a school that makes you feel at home and comfortable in your own skin, no matter how near or far.

Rebecca

Spend a weekend there....if you are comfortable in your environment and with the people at the school, then classes and your social life will be great. Do whats best for you, the student.

Curtis

The best advice for parents is not to worry and to let go. Be happy that your son or daughter is moving in the right direction. Keep in touch with your child at school and do not try and be a homework police officer like you might have been when they were in High School. Let them mature naturally and make sure you always support them and their decisions. Encourage them to not be on the schools "Drinking Team" but on something fun and enjoyable that gets them involved socially, physically, academically, or even better all three. Students, have the best time of your life! This is your shot to make college everything you wanted. Have fun, let loose, but most of all be your self. This is a new beginning! You are starting on a blank slate. No more high school clicks, new people, new experiences, do everything you can. Go to class and get good grades so you can keep going to school. You are going to college to give your self a bright future. Have fun and party, but just don?t waist your entire college career trying to get the best keg stand time.

Johannette

To parents, watching my mom cry was extremely hard on me, but we both knew this is what I wanted to do and she supported my choice becuase of that I felt at ease. I don't know just yet what it is really like to leave your child in the care of others so far from home, but I do know the support you give is our best hope for success. Being there at 2am when your child is having a rough time craming and just need to talk really means the world. To students, I wouldn't go somewhere extremely far from home just yet, because you may change your mind or something bad can happen and you or someone you love will have to get somewhere fast. Go far enough that your away but close enough that you can still come home because believe me its nice to come home. Check in with family and friends regularly, it means the world to most of us. But mostly be who you are and do what you want. Experience new things and accept people for who they are, you'll have less stress and lead a more complete life.

carolyn

Think. Think. Think. If you're not happy, you can always switch.

Lauren

Parents let your child pick whichever school they think is right for them. No matter how far they may be moving away trust them, they are making the right decision.

Chelsea

I advise students and parents to look into many schools and decide which one is the best. You should make sure that it is definitely the school that is right for you and put a lot of thought into your future before making any decisions.

Alicia

To find the right college for you, you should focus on who you are and what you feel will help you develop as an individual. For most people, that means finding a program that will help you enter into a career that fulfills some sort of desire... a desire to learn, to make money, to help others, to leave a lasting imprint on the world. The right college should offer programs that will enable you to excell in your career once you graduate. The right college will also offer extracurricular activities that intrest you and allow you to have fun while developing various skills and allowing you to network with many different people. To make the most of your college experience, you should apply yourself, first and foremost, to your academics. Paying for college is only worthwhile if you graduate! Then, find a few activities that you enjoy, and commit to them. Extracurricular activities look great on resumes, and committing to them for more than a semester makes it look even better. Finally, to make the most of your college experience, make new friends, but never lose sight of the old! Have fun and try something new every day!

Sarai

I would tell parents to get really involved in the college choosing process. It means a lot to your child that you show that you care. I would tell students to ask questions when they go for a tour, even if you think it might be a dumb question. You should know everything about the college you choose to attend. Also, once you're in school, go out there and meet as many people as possible. I truly believe that the people you meet in college are your best friends for life.

Jackie

For a student, you really need to visualize yourself at that school. Could you see yourself going to class, parties and sporting events there? For a parent, you simply need to be supportive regardless of how you feel about the situation. Being supportive allows your child be happy with their choice and not feel guilty for it.

Ryan

Parents and students should do a variety of things before chosing the right college or university. This would include visting other schools, going to other states, and viewing other courses, but most importantly, the student must feel like they belong. I believe it is important for the student to spend a day or two at each school so that they may become accustomed to how the school would feel to them. They must think of the actities that interest them, as well as the opportunities that may arise for them in the area. I would also recommend checking out fraternities and sororities. These organizations are what makes your college experience more valuable and memorable, as the experiences you may have with them could never be experienced anywhere else in your lifetime.

Deirdre

Do your research! If students know what kind of feild they want to enter, it helps narrow down the college search immensly. Visiting schools is always a good idea, however, virtual tours are available online. It is important for parents to be supportive but also proactive in their childrens decisions. For both parents and students, it is a good idea to get involved with whatever it is that is available. Volunteering and community service are big deals at colleges and universities now a days and can even be fun! Don't be afraid to ask questions in order to make sure that you are recieving all that you can from each specific college. It is also important to remeber that everyone else is anxious and nervous too, so don't be afraid to talk to anyone. Most importantly though, have fun!

Laura

Make sure you take all aspects into consideration before you settle on a school. You may love the school and the campus but the surrounding town may not be right for you and ruin your college experience.

Diavana

Make sure it's exactly what you want to get out of a schhol to succed in life. no matter the cost. thereis always a way. money is worth the scarifice for a good education.

Nick

Don't wait to go to college, most college tuition is going up, so if you wait to go to college you might be paying more later then you would now. Also make sure the college you do pick is the right one for you. Does it meet the needs of what you want to learn and if not what qualifications does it have that you might want to attend it. Pick a college that you can refer back to after you graduate, for financial need in paying off your loans if you have any, or getting a job in the field you studied. Also make the most of your college experience, go out and explore, get to know the "real world" because sooner or later you'll be joining it.

naija

Dont go to a college because of fun and partying go because you want to learn and make it in life .its a saying that you can read the book by its cover what will your cover tell a person. if i can do one thing in life i want to have a career not just a just just choose the best school for you.

Ross

Parents and students need to know ahead of time what they are looking for in a college before they set out in search of the perfect college. They need to be looking for the academics, social life, resources the college possesses, and the area the college is in. The academics aspect of the college may be to some parents the most important aspect. Is this college dedicated to giving the students the best possible education they could receive? Are they focused on teaching the material the students while need in order to be successful in their careers. These questions ar eall important in selecting the perfect college. The social aspect is the most important to the students. In order to feel comfortable in college, students need to know they will be able to fit in at college and have fun. in order to succeed. Does the college have the resources and the money to fund things necessary for the kids to do the work and research that is required. Finally, is college city acceptable to the students? Is it safe at night? is there a lot to do? These things fit into the social requirement too.

Omar

Ask as many students that are not officially related with any department within the school their honest opinion about the school. Parents: remember the things that mattered to you when you were in college and ask those students for their opinions. Students: ask those students about your expectations, your worries, hopes, and anything you really want to know from those students. Don't ask the orientation leaders, resident assistants, admissions, or any other department, even if they do employ students and that's who you happen to have available to you. Search for those students that are not affiliated with those departments and ask them for their honest opinion. They will more likely to give you their true opinion other than those who have jobs with those departments.

Danielle

Go with your first instinct, if its what you want originally, chances are you are right, and make the most out of your experience, I will graduate in May 2009, and I feel like I moved into my first dorm yesterday.

Dan

Thoroughly check out all of your choices and make sure you make a good choice. Parents, remember that this is your childrens future and while you should always guide them, allow them to make their own path.

Earl

I would say to find a college that is diverse and is known for the desired career choice that you would like to persue. Also, get involved with campus activities so that you can make friends and establish networking opportunities.

Stephanie

When considering colleges, you need to think about whether you know exactly what you want to study. If you have no idea what you would like to study, attending a two year community college would be your best bet. This way, you are gaining the credits you would at any majoy university, but spending less money and in the process, figuring out what exactly it is you want to study. Once you have recieved your Associates Degree, you will have matured a little more and hopefully have a clearer picture of what it is you want for your life. On the other hand, if you know exactly what you want to study, search out colleges that offer your intended major. Research the school, find out what their extra curricular activties are, class size, things that are important to you in your education. If there is more than one school you like, consider the location and the kind of people that live there. In the end, you need to make the best decision for your future and your pocket. Choosing the right college is a hard decision, but with careful planning and considertion, the decision will be made that much easier.

Ashley

An incoming student should know from the first initial visit whether a school is right for them or not. Do not get wrapped up in the name or reputation of a school, but focus on what the student wants in a school. Don't go to a school just for bragging rights, but for one that will allow you to live your best life and excel in areas that you want to focus on.

Shyleen

TOUR THE COLLEGE! DOn't rush headlong into anything without exploring your options.

JEFF

Pemium dorms only, max meal plan, bring a car for convience of getting around the city and leaving the city to go to cheaper groc. stores exct

Spencer

One huge aspect about choosing a college is the social atmosphere. Yes, the academic part of choosing a college is the most important, but many people tend to absorb every word the college says about the surrounding area without experiencing the actual environment for themselves. Any college can say that they are located in a 'small, perfect city with friendly people', only to have their students get in fights and mugged on the streets. People should take the time to personally visit any college they choose, and spend at least a few days in the area, getting to know the area and decide if it's the place for them.

Lindsey

JWU ROCKS although its so expensive, and im struggling for money right now, you have to find the right school that will fit your needs

tom

um basicly make sure your son or daughter is ready for the chalange of higher learning, and that you wre not forceing them to go becuse if they dont want to go they wont put their head in the books, and ital just be a waste of money... just be supportive.

Joann

I would tell parents and students to research as many schools as possible. To visit the schools and apply to as many as you like. You should make a list on things you look for in a college and go based on that. You only get to go to college once and its up to you to make the best as possible. Parents should in courage students to go where they want to support them and be be there for them. College is hard and stressful and we nees our parents the most during this time. Its up to you the student to make this the best opportunity , open up your minds and be ready to learn alot obout the worls, yourself, and othes.

Melanie

Finding the right college is really important. Get information from as many colleges as you would like. It is something to really research. It all depends on the size of a college you like and the classes. When you visit colleges try to talk to as many people as you can. Students, teachers, or anybody around. Students will usually give you their honest opinion on whether they like it or not. You can't go to a college just because your friend goes, you really need to find a school that is fit for you in every way.

Darnell

The advise I would give is that they should choose a college they feel is right and not let anyone choose for you. College is a one in a life time thing and to enjoy it you have to know what you want and what you like and also to choose a college that you know you can keep focus.

Leticia

Choose whatever major you are intrested in, and visit the campus before you apply, and it you like it apply to that college.

alexandria

Make sure that it is right for you, dont go just because someone thinks it is best for you.
