Don't try and force your child into something they don't want to do or a school they don't want to go to. It's their future and their choice. Just don't be afraid to ask questions about anything relating to their choices they may not have thought of everything but remember to not push your own opinions to much.

Nathan

get a work-experience idea of what the employers in your desired industry demand from you as an employee, and decided if that is really what you want to invest time and money into in order to work that job as a career.

Samantha

My advice. Let them choose where your son/daughter wants to go to school. Give them a few guidelines like public transportation nearby, under 30,000 dollars and etc. If you pick the school they go to thye may end up pushing back because it wasn't what they wanted and then they'll mess you their furture with bad grades. If necessary spend one week at the beginning of the summer traveling around to colleges visting campuses. Or better yet spend one weekend doing while college classes are still in session so you can get the full effect of what the college is going to be like when they get to campus.

Teale

In order to find the right school you should visit the school during the academic year. Walk around campus and see how the students interact with eachother. Talk to some of the students and ask them what they think about the school and if they recommend it for you or your child to attend.

Takara

The advice I would give to parents and/or students about finding the right college is to pick somewhere that both the student and parent is comfortable with and enjoys. Depending on the type of area they are from, they might want to be somewhere they are more accustomed to. The reason I chose Johnson & Wales was because it was far, but not to far from home. I was able to travel back and forth as much as I liked. Another piece of advice that I would give parents and/or students about making the most of the college experiences, is by getting out and doing new and fun things, whether it be joining a frat/sorority, or maybe a club or organization, or just going out and trying new things and meeting new people. College is all about finding yourself, and no matter what you do, you should have fun and embrace the experiment, because it goes by quicker than you know it.

Sherrise

I would advise parents to enable their children to make a decision they are comfortable with being their children will have to make a life out of their college environment and career. Supporting and understanding you child is very important in a college athmosphere since it is such a drastic change. Their children will need to live with their decision made at this time in their lives so dont judge their character becasue everyone makes mistakes. Not only do kids need their parents but they need a friend. Never forget that.

Eliana

You need to make the decision for yourself and your future. You cannot choose for anyone else, and don't let anyone make you feel like you cant suceed at your true dream. You can achieve anything you want and be anything you want as long as you have the determination and drive to get there. Only you can know what college experience you want, and don't waste it on finding a school that just looks cool. Trust yourself to make the right decision, because it is for you. Most importantly, apply early!! Show the school you're serious and give yourself option so you don't stress.

Hillary

While using internet searches and pamphlets to find the right college can be a wonderful start, visiting the campus and talking to students of the college is key in finding the right school. Making yourself familiar with these not only helps you make an informed decision choosing a school, but it can help you once you are enrolled. Having friends at school is very important, even if you are still living at home. It is great to have someone helf you in your time of need, in case you need to set up a study group, call someone for information you may have misunderstood during class, or even just someone to keep you on your toes. Being familiar with faculty and your fellow students can help you in every aspect of college life: applying, choosing a school, and being successful in your studies.

Natasha

To make sure to visit the campus first! and to study the statistics!

Courtney

visit the college first, see what classes are like, ask fellow students & professors and done pick a school just beacuse of the location!

lakenyia

The advice i would give parents or students is to look into the college you want to go and find out does it fit you and also make sure your going to school to get an education not fooling around. There was a lot of students who had to leave because of their GPAs.

Colleen

Try to best understand your own personal wants and needs - socially, academically, and culturally when choosing a school. When you step on campus, take notice of all the activities to gain a healthy social life but also look at flyers for academic and career oppoutunities. Make the most of your professor's knowledge. Do what you went to the school to do, meaning constantly take steps toward building a good resume, reputation and array of experiences. Parents should trust their child and encourage them to step out of their comfort zone; every other place in the world is different than your hometown.

Tawnya

I would suggest that all students really take into consideration the overall reputation of the college or university. There is nothing worse than working hard for four years and then realizing that your degree isn't respected. Every school has a social scene so don't waste your time worrying about parties, they will always be there. Instead focus on determining whether or not the school offers what you're looking for academically. Find a school that offers you an academic advisor and plenty of accessible information on degree requirements. If you have a hobby, look for a school that has a related club or organization. Anything that adds to your resume, and isn't miserable for you to have to participate in, is a great opporunity. Wait until you get financial aid statements before accepting any offers. Realizing that you are over $20,000 in debt with another year to go when you're only 20 years old is harsh, to say the least. Make friends in classes, read the books your teachers suggest, drink lots of coffee, stay up all night to make your assignments perfect, and network like your future depends on it. Parents- trust your kids.

Sarah

Pick a college that is different from everything that you're used to. What is learning if you already know about it? Keep an open mind and an open heart - have fun!

Kelly

The best advice I can give to parents and students while searching for the right college is plan! Know what you are looking for before you start looking. Know what your intended major will be and find a school with a good program for that major. Check out the dorms, research financial aid and payment options. Even take a look at the bookstore. When you find the right school you will know it. You just have to be looking in the right places.

Yun

If the student who think this is better than study and that's why they want to so culinary, they pick the wrong major/school. This need lots of passion and work. If student who is not passionate of this study, they will not do well. However, if the student who is really interested in this major, it will be fun and it is the best school to attend!

Eric

The school is what you make of it.

Jillian

I would tell parents and students that knowing what you want to do as a career is a hard choice to make. Knowing what you want to do usually goes along with what college you want to go too. Many students graduate high school not knowing what they want to do and I believe that is ok. College is extremely important and attending it without knowing what your major is going to be in fine. General classes are there to guide you and usually after a year or two you know what you want to do. To the parents and students who know what major they want to enroll in then it's all about finding a college that fits the student as a person. College can be scary the first week but you get through it and look back and say, wow, I can't believe I was un-sure about my new surroundings. Find a campus that calls out to you and your major. Make sure it feels like a place where you can academically and socially learn. Everything will fall together in the end, but as a student you should feel comfertable with your choice.

MEGAN

START EARLY AND GET ALL THE INFO ON THE SCHOOLS YOU WANT TO. GO LOOK AT THE ONES YOU REALLY WANT TO GO TO .SEE HOW THE STAFF WORKS WITH YOU. TAKE A LOOK AT THE CAMPUS . GO AND GET A FEEL OF THE CAMPUS AND SEE IF YOU CAN SEE YOURSELF THERE. MAKE SURE YOU TALK TO STUDENTS AND GET THEIR VIEWS ON THE SCHOOL AND HOW WELL THE TEACHERS HELP OR TAKE THE TIME TO TELL YOU WHERE TO FIND THE ANSWERS TO YOUR QUESTIONS. SEE IF ITS A PLACE YOU WANT TO LEARN AND SEE YOURSELF AT BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO BE HAPPY THERE IN ORDER TO LEARN YOU NEED A STRONG STAFF LIKE WE HAVE AT MY CAMPUS.

Ashley

Do what you love.

Rachael

My advice to any student starting college would be to at least have an idea of what you want to do or what you like to do before picking a degree. Make sure to study abroad and experience new cultures and different places. My advice to parents would be to support the students and know when it's time to let go. Let them go off and do their own thing, but be there when they need you or when they mess up.

Marissa

Parents listen to your children adn childre listen to your parents. Look outside of the partying and drinking, college is more than that, its what sets you up for the rest of your life, so take it very seriously. Give 100{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} and don't be ashamed to pick a college because of its academic standing instead of its social life, your there to get an education, when your focus is on that then everything else will fall into perspective.

Jillian

Explore your options. Look at different schools, and do all of your college applications as early as you can! It definietly helps in getting into good housing as well as getting the stress of the applications off your shoulders as soon as possible. Talk and be very open with each other and explain what you think you might want to do while you are away at school (what degrees you are looking into), which schools you are specifically looking at and why you are looking at going to them. Try and be positive.

I would tell future students to get involved, make as many friends as you can, and keep up on your work. I would tell parents to keep in touch with their child but not to smoother them, for if they do, they'll never go home and rebel against them.

Shade

they should start looking for the right college during their child's sophmore year and highschool and then list the most important factors of what they want in a school like distance, social activites, study abroad programs, etc.

Laura

College isn?t just about book learning it?s a great opportunity to discover new things about you. So go to the school you really want, even if they didn?t offer the best financial aid package. You need to be happy, and money problems can be figured out. College is a great time in life so enjoy it every step of the way. Find a balance between your social life and classes and ask for help if you need it. There are plenty of places on or off college campuses that will help you get through tough times so never feel like you are alone, and mom and dad are still there for you so don?t be shut them out. The four years you?re in college will fly by so try to enjoy little things along the way and build up friendships that will last years after graduation. Souza said ?Happiness is a journey not a destination? apply that same thinking to college life. Getting ?in? can cause so many emotions but it?s what you do once you get here that counts. College is a journey not a destination.

Kristen

My advice would to be start looking at colleges junior year of high school. I applyed to 3 schools and I didnt look at any of them until I was accepted. I waited until the last minuet to apply for schools. Start looking at schools before senior year. Senior year is when you start narrowing down the schools that you would like to attend from the ones that dont fit what you would like to do. Also look for schools that have things that interest you going on around campus. Make the choice on where to go based off if they have your major, activities you would like to do, size of class and your own personal preferences. I like having small classes and teachers know who you are. It makes the classroom experience more personal. Other people prefer to sit in a lecture hall with alot of students. No matter where you go make sure you attend class, do the work, take notes, and read. While that is important make sure you dedicate one day or one night to just going out with friends and have fun. When going out remember college can be fun without drugs or alcohol.

Stephanie

Students should figure out what kind of setting they enjoy most. I also recommend when parents and students go to visit their prospective universities they spend the weekend rather than just making it a day trip. Exploring the area is necessary, seeing where the nearest grocery stores and other establishments are will help make the decision easier.

Angela

I feel as though finding the right school is about discovering who you are as an individual, a leader, and a new member of the industry. College is about growing and finding out who you are as a person, and the right college will encourage you to do your best instead of making you feel inferior.

Thomas

Choose a school that offers an education in a field that you love. However, do so carefully, as you may find youself two years and $60,000 into studying an industry that you cannot see yourself working in. Before you commit to a major; especially a speacialized one in an art or science field, find a way to experience the industry first hand. Also, think carefully about the compensation of the field that you choose in relation to the way you see yourself living in the future.

Elizabeth

Go to the college fairs in your area, if a school you are looking at offers weekend programs for high school students do it. These things can help you narrow down choice for majors and schools. Also dont forget to tour the places, you can not choise a school with out knowing what you are getting your self into. Also if you are looking a school that is far from home, go visit it with out the parents. You need to make sure you can spend time away from them. Once you get on campus you have to get involved. Join a club, write for the school paper, or even get a job. You need to make friends and this is how you do it.

Claudia

The advice i would give them would mainly be about being sure where you want to go to school and what you want to study. I feel personally that alot of college students have a hard time picking a college because they dont know excatly what they are looking for in a school. Make sure that you go to a school that beniefits you in all different ways. Somewhere you are comfortable and can give some conveince too. Also make sure you pick a major that you can see yourself pursuing in the future but also having a never ending passion for it as well. In my experience so far college is definitely different from highschool. but i believe that any student can make it as long as they have the determination to.

andrew

Find a city or campus that you enjoy being in. When school and classes get tough it is nice to be somewhere that you are comfortable in. Find a school that offers things that relate to you.

Julia

Advice I would give to prospective students would be to find a school in a place that fits you the best. Have fun during your college years but also take your school work very seriously. If you dont do your work you will have to leave school, friends and good times. Do not get caught up in drama at school and have fun with your good friends. You will always get along with people and others will aggervate you but just have fun and enjoy your time there.Do notworry about graduation until your there, make the most of every situation and do not take life too seriously. Problems will happen with school work, grades, roommates, relationships and "legal problems". Be safe, do all your school work and have the time of your life. Do not stress too much but do not think its just a ride. Listen to advice teachers, friends, and even parents give to you. Wear your heart on your sleeve and fall in love and dont be afraid to get hurt. Make life long friends and make good connections in industry while in college. Enjoy your college days! Ciao!

Danielle

The advice I would give to parents and students is to always have a plan. The best advice I got since I have been here has been "when you fail to plan, you plan to fail". To have a future you have to have at least some idea. Sit down, research topics that intrest them. There is always going to be time to fix change the plan. The idea is just to have one.

Kimberly

Go visiit the college. This gives you a chance to see the campus, talk to students and see the culture of the school. Get involved in school activities. Stay focused on education it is the future.

Sara

I would suggest that students visit a few colleges and figure out what type of school they are looking for. They should research important details like class size, school spirit, extra curriculars, career development, housing, and social life. It is important to understand that what works for some people doesn't for others. For example, a lot of students transfered out of my school. This was frustrating to me because I kept hearing them complain and it made me feel like I should be complaining about these things too. I then realized that the school just wasn't for them, but for me, it was a great fit. I am very involved in several clubs, I love my classes, and I am very career focused. This is what made my school work for me. Sure, it would be nice if the food was better and if there was more school spirit, but overall, I love my school and I know that it will give me the tools to suceed in my career! Students should go into school with a positive attitude and make an effort to make new friends, have fun, get involved, and study hard!

Elizabeth

Check out the campus as well as its surroundings before you enroll. Ensure that the class schedules will include EVERYTHING that you want to learn about.

Hollie

I advice to visit the campus to see if you like where you want to study to. Look at the campaus's website also.

Kathleen

get a tour and make sure you like the environment surrounding it; easily able to get to places you need to go

Shannon

When students beigin to look for colleges, allow them to make their own choices. Parents can have a say, although students want to go with either friends or attempt to live on their own so that they may grow to become better adults. Student sshould listen to what their parents are thinking and take part in adult conversations about their education. Spend time with the students, go to colleges to visit with them, take part in their adventureand support their decisions.

Joseph

If I was giving advice to parents or students about finding the right college, then I would give them three words to base their decision: Your Future Career. That is what college is all about, getting good grades to stand out among other students, and then using those grades and knowledge to find a solid career. Getting involved is another great part of college. Whether joining a fraternity or sorority or just making alot if friends, college will be the best four years of your life socially. You will get to meet so many different people and maybe even some life long friends. Making a contribution to the community surrounding your college is also a great way to make your college experience worthwhile. Not only will you feel great about giving back to the community, but you also have the chance to make friends and possibly some connections for a job. There are many things that will change your mind about college; cost, location, and reputation. When making the final decision you should think about your future career, and how enthusiastic you will be while attending that college.

Marletta

I would advise to students and their parents to look for a college that best fits the student's interests, mainly in academics to choose their desired major. To select a major, the student should decide on something that interests them and would love to do as a career. They sould also take into consideration the different extracirricular activities offered on and off campus, so that they can get involved in something other than just school work, and it would be a great time to make some new friends that may share their interests. It would also be a good idea to explore the different ways on how to pursue their desired professional goals, whether if the school offers co-op, internship/externship, or study abroad opportunities, in which will give them a more broad range on exactly what they would want to do with their career choice. For parents, they should not have to worry too much about the costs of school as long as they apply for federal aid, because there is always a way to pay off those pricy costs; so the price should not affect the decision on which school to attend.

When searching for the perfect colleger to attend, make sure you weigh all of your options. Look into your past, your present, and your plans for the future and what you hope to achieve. I you want to move away from home to a different part of the country you must research the culture difference to insure you are makeing the rigt decision. Also, look into past alumni of the university and see how there career's evolved and how they succeded in their appropriate field. The most important part of deciding the correct university is the education. Is the school the best choice for your education and career goals. In order to guarantee the perfect university to attend you must also do an on-campus visit. Make day trips to individual colleges and explore the campuses and make sure it is the correct school for you. My advice to prospective students is just research the school and make sure that it is exactly what your are looking for.

chelsea

Don't just choice the school that looks the nicest or has the best parties. Don't settle for less than you would like due to financial situations. There should be no restrictions to the schools you can go to. College should be the best time of your life, you are away from home and living your life the way you want to. I feel the best idea is to get away from your home town and expereince as many new things as possible. Dont just settle, if your not enjoying yourself do something to change it whether changing schools, finding new friends etc. at this point in your life it's about you being happy. Make sure not to under estimate yourself, you will not be able to accomplish great things if you think you cant. Good luck!!!!!

Elizabeth

Make sure you research it to its fulliest.
