What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Bradley

Although I have only spent one year on a college campus i have learned a lot. I have learned how to manage stress, act in a professional matter, and develop long lasting relationships. Through these attributes I feel as though I could be successful throughout the rest of my college years as well as for the rest of my life. I learned how to mange stress through several obstacles. The balance of trying to study for several classes cause stress in which i diminished because of the schedule that I made to help me mange time. The stress that i had made me better organized because of the studying I had to do. Also the professors here helped me to act in a professional matter because of the way that they made students respond to them. Rather it be in class or through e-mail, you always had to respond as if they were an employer. Also college has helped me developed long-lasting relationships because getting to know your your professors, counselors and advisers make the road to graduation smoother. The help that they would provide along with the other things that i learned would help me throughout life.

Hector

Well one of the first thing I would say to students is not to waste their time in college, to be able to decide what you want to do in life. also I would tell them to search as much as they can for any financial help; and to avoid partying with alcohol use because it could make you get in big trouble. To be a role model for other and to be focused on school and whener there is time to try to have fun with friends in a safe way.Enjoy college life try to interact with other to be able to know more about other specially people from other nationalities

If I could go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior there would be many things I would change and would tell myself. Initially I would start off by telling myself to study harder for the SAT and to focus on getting a better score each time. I never realized until I entered college how much additional financial aid and scholarships I could receive if I would have scored higher on the SAT. In addition, talking to other students on campus and comparing the amount of loans you have compared to others is upsetting because they are receiving a free education that you have to pay for now and in the future. I would also have focusd more in my math and science classes. There are so many scholarships and additional funding that many institutes will give you because of the amount of classwork and need for students with degrees in math and science field. These are the key points I would have told myself if I could talk to myself as a high school senior.

Jasmine

Don't worry about life after high school. Everything will fall into place. You will make it and find the college that is a perfect fit for you. Remember to study more; especially in Chemistry (you will need this later in college). Try to create more relationships with your teachers because they will help you in the long run. Make sure you thank all of your teachers for helping you and inspiring you to meet your challenges. Take the time to thank your mom. She is your number one cheerleader. Stay dedicated to excellence in education because it will help you reach your goals in life. But most of all, enjoy the last year in high school because you will only live through it once in a lifetime.

Jeremy

If I could talk to my high school self I would be certain I knew how to get the classes I needed and that I searched for more scholarships to help with expenses. I would tell me where to park to arrive at class in the shortest time and the best places to rest when I have time between classes. Then I would encourage me to stay with it no matter what and to get help whenever necessary. I would say it was definitely worth it. Then I'd give a few stock tips and tell myself what movies to make sure I never saw.

Jessica

I would try my hardest to improve my grades, improve my study habits and work on my social skills. I would improve my grades just so I would know how to apply pressure to myself when I need to and push myself especially when I dont want to do something. I would improve my study habits because living in the dorms there are so many distractions and sometimes you just have to grin and bare it just to get through. I would be open minded because there is no telling what you would see in an all girl dorm. I would work on my social skills because i would be going to a college where I only knew about two people before I got there, so I would have to make new friends or interact with new people at some point.

Whitney

If i could go back in time, I would tell myself to slow down! High school was over so fast. I would say to stick to one club that I actually cared about. I would tell myself to pay attention to how much things cost and stick to not getting a loan. that was a great idea.

Andrea

Well just so you can breath again...you did graduate. Lol. Now you have a lot to look forward to so here are a few tips. Choose a major that YOU want. Look into all your choices and make sure that it is right for you. Next study, study, study when you get to school. Partying and all that stuff can wait, it is more important to miss a party and get your work done than try and wait until the last minute. Also, be prepared to teach yourself what is not taught in class. The instructor can not do everything so you have to do some things on your own. Use the resources available to you. You pay for it so you might as well take advantage of the computer labs, libraries, tutors, and instructor office hours. Relax and have fun, you'll get through it just find. Oh yeah... work on saving some money too. I promise you that you will need it.

Justina

As a senior in college I have had my fair share of mistakes and poor decisions. I consider my mistakes to be lessons learned which has helped me grow as a young adult. If I could go back four years ago to my senior year in high school the first thing I would tell myself is to take my freshmen year seriously. During my freshmen year it seemed like I had all the time in the world to get myself together academically. Adjusting to being on my own and balancing my priorities with my social life was challenging. I took my easy classes for granted rather than using those classes as freebees to a higher my GPA. I would also tell myself to not be afraid to speak up. By not speaking up held me back from getting more involved in on campus organizations and opportunities that could have possibly furthered my experience in my major. Lastly, I would say to myself is to be aggressive and go for what I want. Sitting on he side lines will get you no where and nothing is ever handed to you, if you want it then go get it.

Brooke

If I could go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior, I would first tell myself to relax and not to worry about not succeeding in my classes in college. I would also apply to where I oringinally wanted to go to college and would save all of the money from graduation.

Tyneika

If I could do so I would tell myself that know matter how hard it gets keep your head up, because you will always have someone to go to if you are in the need of help. Also I would tell myself that you should not be affraid to ask anything because it will only help you and you are most likely asking the same thing that someone else wants to ask. I would let myself know that it is going to be hard but in the long run it will all pay off.

Cherita

It seems like just yesterday I was beginning my senior year. I had nothing on my mind but graduation. I figured everything else would eventually just fall in place. Lucky for me I had parents that was more concerned about my future than me. They encouraged me to apply to colleges and to save any money that I received. All of the money I received went towards clothes, nothing that would help me in college. As time passed I continued to spend like a wild banshee. When I got to college, it did not take long to realize that the ?shirt? could have gone towards groceries. Money became not a necessity but a need. The thought of books, supplies, and dorm essentials did not pass through my mind. I quickly found myself on my own with lots of clothes, and unfortunately no groceries. I managed to somehow make it through. If only I had thought about my spending habits and taken on my parent?s advice. The best advice I could give is -"save as much money as possible, you will need it".

Sahara

I can honestly say I ask myself this question at least twice a week. The greatest advice I could give to my senior self would have been to apply to all the schools that sent me letters and waived the application fees. I was so stubborn on wanting to only apply to a couple of schools and when I didn?t get scholarships or financial aid because my mother made ?too much ? money I was very disappointed. I would also urge my senior self to apply for as many scholarships that I could get a hold of. My biggest struggle right now is paying for school. Although I am on a half tuition scholarship it is still extremely expensive to attend higher education. Lastly I would give myself the advice to not have to many expectations and just live in the moment. College is a once and a lifetime experience and I should enjoy every minute of it. That may even be some advice I could use right now.

LaWanda

I would travel back to the year 1995 when I was unsure of myself and my career options. After working in various areas of the medical insurance and healthcare field, I would encourage the 18 year old LaWanda to choose a career in mass media. There is a need for change in the healthcare industry and with establishing a job in corporate communication in a medical facility, you can make a difference. LaWanda, trying to obtain your bachelor's at 32 years old and working full-time is not easy. Take advantage of getting your education now while you do not have the pressure of a job and household bills, when you are able to fully focus on your academics and the change you will be able to enforce. Once you arrive at North Carolina A&T, schedule your study time but include a healthy social life. Make an effort to step out of your comfort zone and meet people outside of your race, gender, social class and broaden your horizon. College is an opportunity for you to meet a diversity of people and become a diversified person with diversified thoughts to make a huge change in a diversified world.

Jonathan

I would tell myself to get ready for a change. That there is going to be more stress on your mind than before because you are stepping into the real world where things aren't going to be sugar coated for you. You have to make the right decisions which could affect your life and college experience. Its time to grow not become but grow into a man, because if you try to become something that you aren't ready for you will lose yourself. Growing, which takes time and gives time to learn, is a part of the college experience. Think ahead and don't let anything get into the way of your goals. Always remember why your here and what your here for, which isn't for other people but for yourself. Smile a little, learn alot, and keep your head up regardless of how hard it may be to do so and you will succeed.

steven

I would give myself the advice of getting started on the college process much earlier. I didnt know it was so difficult to get into college until later on in life. It was all apart of a learning experience in my opinion though.

maxine

If i could go back in time i would give my self advice about staying in the same state and attend a university where i live at because i never had to take out a loan until i went to a out of state school and now everyday i have to wonder where my next penny coming from and how will i be able to stay in school for the next semster or do i have to drop out and find a job then come back .......

NIcole

If I had the chance to go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior I would talk about eliminating or reducing procrastination. Procrastination is a very serious aspect that effects both high school students as well as college students. I would also advise my self that making good grades is very important. And lastly sometimes it isnt only about what you know, its about both what you know and who you know!

Silkena

If I had the opportunity to go back as a high school senior and talk to myself about college, I would tell myself to look at different opptions. When looking for colleges, I was so determined to get away from home that I applied to all out-of-state schools and had one school in mind that I was just so ready to attend, which is the school I am at now. I didn't give any in-state colleges a chance, no matter how good of a school it was. Now I wish I would have looked at some in-state colleges because I see now that I wasn't as ready as I thought I was to be away from home. I would also tell myself to look for and apply for more scholarships and grants. College is not cheap and I see that now. I believe I kind of cheated myself out of money that I could have gotten by not attending an in state college. Lastly, I would tell myself to be prepared. Everything is not going to go as planned but as long as I stay focused and determined, I can achieve anything.

leslie

I would tell myself to be more focused on school don't pocrastinate and disipline myself more.Knowing what i know now i really could have been more successful in high school and college wouldn't seem as hard. I really wished i would have displined myself more because i feel the clubs and going out are always callin my name and when it comes to chosin the club or gettin up in the morning for school sometimes i make the wrong decision. I would really tell myself not to wait to the last minute to do my homework cause you well never do your best and there is always a possiblity that i may have forgot something. i waould also tell myself to be ready for change because highschool and college are really different and dont go in expecting one thing.

Lakiesha

If time would allow I would indeed go back in to time to talk with my self as senior. I would one take more challenging classes my senior year, instead of being lazy and taking easier courses. I would work like crazy during the summer to save as much money as possible . I would have told myself to fill out as many scholarship applications as possible, to prevent taking out a loan. I would have practice waking up on time and being more organized with my things. I would have motivted myself to practice healthier eating habits. I would also tell myself that everyone is not your friend and be prepared for anything once you enter college. Also never forget your purpose its to go to school for your education, so you can make your dreams come true.

Topaz

Transitioning from high school to college can be a very difficult task if your mind set is not ready for a big change. But if your an individual that can incorporate different techniques then you should become a very successful college student. I on the other hand didn't imagine how "big" of a change college actually was going to be. I was not prepared for all the hard work and didn't realize how to manage my time between work and personal time; neither did I know how much organization could help you stay focused. Staying focused in a college environment was one of the hardest thing for me to cope with. In high school I was simply thinking about the parties and hanging out with new peers. My first semester of college taught me differently. I didnt know how much of a struggle it would be to try to catch up with all my work all because I decided to go out and party. The most important thing I would say to myself would be " never let your social enjoyment interfere with your schooling; it gets you no where."

Jade

The advice I would give myself if I could go back in time, is I would tell myself to stay focused and that I don't have to be around people to feel like I belong or to "fit in". If you stay to yourself, I guarantee you will stay focused A LOT more than if you feel like you constantly have to be around people to feel important or feel like you are not missing anything. Make a daily schedule you abide by faithfully for your activities, school work, and study time. Also, I would tell myself that if you believe in Christ anything can happen and not to stress yourself out with difficult classes and financial issues. Even though I am in a hole financially, I strongly believe God will help me and bless me with some type of funds. And last but not least, BE YOURSELF. Do not do things out of the ordinary to fit in or have temporary happiness and pleasure. When you are yourself, you will be MUCH happier and successful. Strive to be the best, don't let anybody distract you from your goals and success, and NEVER procrastinate in college.

Anthony

If I could go back in time I would tell myself to forget about the Marine Corps and go to college. I would convince myself how wonderful college is. I would tell myself that you are smart enought to be a college graduate, the military is not your only choice. Go to college have fun, find a career and enjoy the college experience.

William

Being the man that I am now I can honestly say that I appreciate the hard work that my parents and family have done for me. If I could go back to my high school senior year I would tell myself numerous things. I would tell him that even though it is your senior year and feels like the end of a process it is just the begining stages of a new one. It is time to become the man that everyone has expected you to be. The level of work in high school is in no comparison to the work that you will recieve in college. The keys to becoming a strong college student are developing good study skills early, having excellent social skills and having good time management. You worked hard in high school and you should continue to do the same in college. Don't let the pressures of world stress you out and keep your head up when times get rough. College is a continuing learning experience and you will love every second of it. You will appreciate your family more, love your friends more and above all develop a new found respect for yourself.

Vaughn

If i were given the opportunity to go back, I would tell myself to begin to prepare my mind for plenty of studying as well as homework because to stay competitive in the area of Computer Science. I would also tell myself to stay in my books and research materials a lot harder than ever because the more one knows, the better candidate that person is to internships. A last piece of advise I would tell myself would be to save as much money as I can now because a recession is coming and times get hard when one is low on funds.

Lakisha

The advice I will give myself is to practice effective study habits such as study after class for 5- 10 minutes, during the week for 30- 40 minutes and on the weekend for 30-40 minutes. Avoid procrastination. Get to know the administration and staff in school. Administrative staff often can be a great help when you really need it. Try visiting the library more often because this is a great place for quite studying and checking out books. Apply for Financial Aid early. Also apply for outside grants, scholarships, loans and work-study programs. Develop self-discipline to teach yourself good habits such as set your goal, identify bad habit that hindering your progress, decide on a positive habit, visualize success and keep trying.

Tisa

I would tell myself to always put my best foot forward! Never take anything that is given to you in High School for granteed because there is nothing given to you for free in college. Be grateful for the opportunity to come to college because somewhere out in the world someone wishes they could be in your shoes so always do your best and do not take school lightly. Know how to motivate yourself, and be determined to do your best because there will come a point in time when all you will have is yourself so learn to depend on yourself and not others. Know that some friendships were not meant to last for a lifetime, people change and people grow. Its up to you to know who is rooting for you and who is rooting against you. Take advantage of every resource that is given to you, if you dont know whats out there then ask around. Keep your priorities in check always! Know that you have to first love yourself in order to know what its like for someone to really love you. Dont let fear step in the way of your progress!

Tiffani

If I could go back in time and talk to myself as a senior in high school I would tell myself to reconsider going to the school that I am at now. Knowing how much it has costed me to come here and the experiences that I have had I could have done at the other schol that I was looking at attending. My biggest advice that I would give myself is to not go to an out of state school just to get away from the situations at home.

Taya

If I could go back and talk to myself as a high school senior I would have told myself to get as many scholarships and grants as possible. College tuition is very expensive and it is going up. You should take every minute of your time looking for scholarships and grants. Your mother is a single parent and she is not able to pay for all four years of school without assistance. Get involved in as many activities as possible. Your willingness to participate in extra curricular activities will get you recognized and you might receive a community service scholarship. Keep up the good work in high school but make sure you stay ahead in all of your assignments and do your best. Love, Taya

Taya

Dear Taya, College is a wonder

Tiffany

Th advice I would give myself would be make school number in your life because parties will come all the time but once those grades are in that is final. Do not be easily influenced and model yourself after the people so are the most successful in college. Get involved and network for it will help you in the future. And lastly never think your dreams and goals are too big to achieve.

Ashley

I would give myself the following adice about making the transition to college life from high school. Ashley, you need to focus. High school should be fun, but you should also be learning a plethera of information. These teachers here are babying you. You are going to be in shock when you get to college if you don't set some goals and limitations for yourself. Let's get a handle on the study sessions first. You must make time in your schedulce for studying. Put it on your calendar--build it into your day. Successfull people are on a schedule, and follow it. Make good decisions--especially when it comes to friends. I say, always go with your gut. It's usually right! Friends can sometimes make or break you, so choose them wisely. Most of all just be yourself and try your best. Nothing beats a failure but a try, as my grandpa would say. Give it your all, dig down deep, study hard, play hard, and pray hard!

Sha'Keevia

The advice that I would give myself is to follow up on scholarships and to really do some hardcore research on the different careers that one college has to offer. I would have filled out more scholarship applications instead of taking out loans that could put me in debt being that I am in financial need and lacking a job. Also, I would have saved up money for books or would have been employed because I was the type of student that was always involved in my school work and I was always on the A and B honor roll.

Felicia

The first day you go to class personally introduce yourself to your instructor and become very aquinted with him/her. Be positive and remember what you are there for, to recieve and education and to become successful. Create a social life and attend events around campus that can help you in the future. GET INVOLVED in clubs, sports, and VOLUNTEER, because all will help you graduate with a greater possbility of having a job coming out of school. Also try not to get below a 3.5 gpa because you would want to graduate with a 3.5 or higher. If you recieve a 2. 0 or 2.5 it's hard to pull your gpa back up to 3.5. Make the best and strive for excellence!

Khadijah

In order to prosper in any college environment; I need to be determine and focus on the goal I wish to achieve. Therefore I would say to myself focus on becoming a entertainment attorney and be determine to learn as much as possible to achieve this goal.

Brittany

I would tell students to go to what ever school they really want to go to. Do not let anyone detour you from going to your dream school or stop you from doing what you want to do in life. Aim for the best.

Misa

I would advise myself to be sociable, learn how to network, manage my time wisely, stay focus, think positive at all times, and be driven to want to succeed. Talking to different people can help you in the furture . You never know who you are talking to unless the person comes out directly and tell you. Being sociable is also apart of networking. By being sociable & using basic networking skills are some ways you discover summer paid programs and internships. Time managment is the overall key to being a successful student. A set schedule for everday of the week is very helpful. Staying focus and thinking positive at all times helps college life go smoother and easier. Thinking positive also prevents from being stressed. Driven to want to succeed is the first step of becoming successful. Acting upon what it takes to becoming successful follows. So just being driven to want to succeed will help in becoming a successful college student.

MarTeekia

The advice that I would give myself if I was a high school senior would be to always do the best you can. Always make time to study for my classes. I would want to join a social organization so that I get involved in something. I would try to get along with anybody and everybody so I would not get into any trouble. Always get things done and not wait until the last minute to do things. And most of all please be myself and don't be a follower or don't let no one peer pressure me to do anything that I dont want to do.

Willie

Knowing what I know now about college life and making the transition, the advice I would give myself as a high school senior wouldn?t be too much, because if I was to take back most things, I probably wouldn?t be where I?m at now. But some advice would be, surround myself with friends who are productive. Knowing who are my friends and mostly, wants my motivation for school. These would be the three advices I would offer myself. The friends I surrounded myself around were dropping out and failing out of school. They was giving up and slowly decreasing. I had great friends but some friends were using me for my knowledge instead of friendship. Only approaching and greeting me just for class work and homework wasn?t want I was looking for. Lastly my motivation for school, if I had the inspiration I have now, college acceptance would have been better. And scholarships wouldn?t be hard to find. These are my three reasons I would advised myself if I was a high school senior.

Brandyn

If there is one thing that I could tell myself about college life, it would probably be just know what you can and you can not do. And I say that because there are sometimes you feel that you can do everything and be successful but the truth of the matter is that you really can not, so you have to know your limitations. Also I would tell myself to not be embarrassed to ask for help when you need it, that are what professor office hours and your tutors are here for, so there should be no reason for you to not know what is going on in a class. That is one of the biggest things I had to learn about being in college, is learning how to be a true student because a lot of things will not be taught in the classroom, so you have to teach yourself and find all types of assistance where accessible.

Leah

I would tell myself to stop and enjoy it. I would also tell myself to choose more carefully as far as colleges.

jordan

To be ready to stay focused and have plenty of patience.

Ebonne

First thing I would say is don't be afraid of the future; we are not afraid of what we understand. Sit down early; devise a plan for things you want to do, plan to accomplish, want to learn, & willing to explore. Don't set a time limit, it would constrict the space of growth as individuals of communities & school. Don't be afraid to speak your mind & outlooks. College is made for safe debate & if not there to debate, while learning then what's the purpose? Also mention to take advantage of every event, opportunity, or service the school offers as a way to help, its not easy alone. Create networks early; Its affective to make a friend from every major; comes in handy in regards to career or life, generally. Different people can help you understand different personalities & viewpoints, good for favors & recommendations, if needing references on your knowledge, skills, & attitude. Remaining advice is become a leader, not another face in the crowd. Run for offices; good experience for interpersonal developments. Quoting Mandela: ?...lead from behind & put others in front, especially when [celebrating] victory...take the front line when there is danger...then people will appreciate your leadership."

Mitchell

If I could go back in time and give myself advice, I would warn myself more about procrastination, I would tell me to think my plans through and have a back up plan before my first plan fails, and I would also tell myself that in this world you are the only person who will take care of you and everyone else is out for their selves, so do not include them in your plan for success. I would tell myself how different college is compared to High School, and how the only way to pass is to actually put time into studying and preparing for the class. And if I dont follow this advice I will have many problems paying for school and if I am successful paying for school then my grades will be below satisfactory and my GPA will suffer the most and school will be a waste of money and time. Because today you need a 3.0 or better to be competitve against the next potential employer.

Danielle

If I could go back and talk to myself knowing what I know now about college life, I would say that my work load will definetely get bigger and I need to learn to go to my professors and advisors for help- they are there to help you succeed, not fail. Although your time may seem like it's slipping away from you, make time for friends and family- don't leave them out. This is a time in your life where you realize what being independent feels like. It may seem a little weird the first week, but after you get used to the people in your classes and in your dorm, you will start to realize that college is a chance to find yourself in the world and also have fun.

Kahri

If i could go back in time and talk to my previous self, i would tell myself to keep up the good work and always strive hard to achive what needs to be done in order for me to be succesfull later on in life. I used highschool to prepare my self for the journey into higher education so i would not be lost or scared once i actually got to the college setting. I would also tell myself to always keep a positive head on your head even though the work, and the course content will get hard there will be ways to pull through, just push foward and keep a level head and succsess will come to you naturally.

Keitra

Stay Foused dont let the hype of college distract you . College is a place where there are all diffrent types of people doing all types of diffrent things. You will be introduced to a lot of diffrent things just keep your values and your morals close to your heart .

Anjelica

College is a great academic, social and personal experience for any individual and it is important to find the institution that meets the majority of your needs. Being an out of state student is difficult, it is also overbearing, but it is NOT impossible. Determination is key so you can make any experience beneficial and wortwhile to any individual. Support is also a great thing to have so even if a child is not doing what others wanted them to do, support will be beneficial to the individual so that they do succeed at what they decided to do. Take anything you can out of every experience, take advantage of assistance, programs, activities, and etc. It is hard work at first but it brings a satisfying feeling when looked back on.

Lasaro

First and last of all you need to leave it up to the student. They are going to be the ones studying there and posibly living there so let them choose the college that best suits them. It is there future and let them live and learn where they wish to an extent.
