Don't blame all your problems on the school. It's up to you to make the most of your experience. Howver, if you really hate your first choice, transferring is always an option. Be open to new experiences and different ways of thinking.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Make sure that the student picks the school that s/he feels the most comfortable with. Freshmen need to be open to more than just figuring out what major they need to choose. The student needs to pick a college that has an environment which promotes extracurricular activities such as participation in clubs, sports, the arts, a healthy lifestyle and can easily accomodate the student if s/he is working on or off campus.

What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

The parking. The is not enough parking on campus, and because there are not enough dorms on campus, this has become a 'commuter school'. Finding parking is awful, especially since the largest parking lot is by the O'Keefe Gymnasium, but when it rains in the area, the parking lot tends to flood.

One piece of advise i would give parents and students would be to be aware of deadlines and get forms in early better than on time. Look around and see what your looking for whether your looking for a large school or small school, and be aware of the activities and school life. Speak to other students about the school life other than academics.

To students, make sure you take in everything about the school. Make sure you visit and talk to the teachers and professors in your major so you have a really clear idea of what school is going to be like for you. Also, if you cannot have a car freshman year, make sure the convienence store isn't 20 miles away and there is transportation around campus. Don't pick a school because your parents want you to go there, if you feel it is right for you, then that's the school for you. It's your life now and you are in full control! Get involved. I played sports all throughout high school and still in college. Even if it's not a varsity sport, they have club teams too. Keep yourself having fun, cause the books can get boring!

What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?

I don't think there is anything I would have wished to know before attending Salem State. I have no complaints and there weren't really any surprises. Nothing that would stop me from attending anyway.

What kind of person should not attend this school?

Salem State offers alot of different majors, so it could be a good school for many students. However, it is a state school and people may think that it is too big for them, and they wish to attend a private, smaller school. Therefore, someone who wants to attend a small or private school should not attend Salem State. Also if they do not like the city, Salem State is not the place for them.

The student population is a lot less diverse than I expected, but seems to be becoming more diverse as more students come in.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

I went back to college as an adult. Some may say that I should have my masters degree by now, and I'm still working on my undergraduate, but waiting was the correct choice for me. When you are in college, the most important advice that I can offer is that you need to take personal responsibility for everything you do academically and socially. Nobody is forcing you to be in class; you are actually paying for the privilege to be there, so get your moneys worth! Your advisors and professors are there to help you learn, and help you expand your knowledge in your field of study. Partying is fun, but being a beer pong champion isn't going to get you a job, but finding a balance between your social and academic lives is incredibly important. I know that sometimes it is hard to see the forest for the trees, but think of your future and push yourself to achieve your goals.

What's the most frustrating thing about your school?

I live 45 minutes from campus, so the drive in the morning is hard, especially if there is snow or ice. Because I live so far, sometimes it is hard to find parking, as the lots are limited. To Salem State's credit, they have been trying to improve the parking situation.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

College is all about preference and what you want to get out of it. If you want to live at home and commute to save money, but still get a very good college education, there are plenty of commuter schools out there that offer a good education at a low cost in which most students do not live in campus. These schools generally have a relatively boring campus on weekends and such, because of the lack of students living there. If you are looking for the total live away from home and meet new friends experience, a majority commuter school just will not do for you. Its all about what you want to get out of college, there is a school for every need, small class sizes, social activities and networking, easy commute and low cost, specific major and so on. The best thing you can do is find out what you are looking for, research schools of that nature, and visit each campus to find the perfect school for you. Get involved and don't be shy, and you can make friends immediately at any college, and have a good time regardless.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Having a good college experience is not determined by where you go to college. It is determined by what you make of it when you get there. If you have it in your mind that the school you are in is no good, you will hate it. If you have it in your mind that you want to succeed, you will make it.

What's unique about your campus?

The best thing about the school is definately the cost. Also, there are people from all over that attend college here, so it is very racially diverse. It is a huge commuter school, so expect many snow days in the winter time.

What's the most frustrating thing about your school?

The most frustrating thing about the school is the constant switch of academic advisors. It makes it nearly impossible to graduate in 4 years, and most people graduate in 5. Personally, I will be doing 4 and a half.

Here's your chance: Say anything about your college!

It's a tight community that helps you feel welcomed even if you are an out of state student who knows nobody when you came to this state, like me. They exaggerate community and the groups and clubs make it possible. Lack of a fraternity/sorority makes the campus also feel more inclusive and open minded as a whole.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Don't worry so much about cost. Make sure you can get financial aide that supports your choice, but go where you really want. Be sure and follow your dream, but keep consequences of those dreams in mind (such as if you want to be an art major like me, take into consideration the cost of supplies). Don't be afraid to go out of state or far away from home. It will be easier to move on to your own life in the future if you use college as a way to get used to the away from home life. And parents, keep an open mind about your kid for when they go off to college. Don't be a bother, but keep an eye on them and make sure they aren't flailing. You want them to try living on their own some, but be willing to help still. College is a transitional time in a person's life. Let them feel free to explore their individuality, and out of all the things college is for, I think discovering individuality and a sense of self is just as important as one?s education.

What's unique about your campus?

Definitely the community and how all the students seem to feel that and encourage it in their own way. I felt welcomed into a new community the minute I arrived here. I've never had such a great social life until I moved here and I feel at home here. If it hadn't been for that, feeling welcomed and part of a whole, i probably wouldn't have continued with school here.

If you fit in it's got a very friendly community. Everyone seems to get along, but that's if you're happy here.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Keep your eyes open kiddos. There's a school out there for everyone. Do not base your choice on tuition. Sure, you won't have to pay off college loans the rest of your life, but sometimes people make the wrong choice for the wrong reasons. Explore the country when looking for schools. It's a big world out there don't get stuck in the same place the rest of your life, unless that's what you're looking for. Make sure you're comfortable where you are. College is about getting to know what you're made of and if you feel out of place it makes the experience a lot more difficult. Parents, help out your kids. Make sure they expand their horizons. Don't follow your dreams, chase them.

What kind of person should not attend this school?

A person looking to find something more out of life. Someone who is looking for a party school. Someone who wants to study film or related field.
