Don't get too stressed out and it will all word out in the end

If I can ever go back as a High School Senior I will be doing the same exact thing I did while in High School. In my High School we had an Alumn from SUNY Albany be our college counselor. When she began working in my High School, I was a sophmore. I already knew that I wanted to come to this outstanding University. She brought me over to many trips that she organized to show the senior and junior class at a time. I was able to visit my beautiful campus a number of times, and the more I visit it, the more welcomed I felt. In other words, I wouldn't change my mind at all. I will be attending the University at Albany- SUNY Albany all over again if i had to make a choice.

Dear Me, While in college, you will find yourself tempted to take many different avenues through life. Instead of only thinking about the here and now, please do take the time to think about how the decisions you make will effect you in the years to come. Also, listen to the advice of others. Dad was right, scholarships can be a great way to get money for school and make life easier during your time at school. Quitting college to go find a job probably isn't the best idea either. Yes, there was money to be made, but the physical nature of the labor will take its toll. On a more positive note, while it is irritating, homework from class is absolutely a better alternative to physical labor. Pay attention, Pal. Think ahead, do and say more nice things. And definitely, definitely take the advice given to you. Love your slightly more wise, but still learning self

Advise that I would give to myself is to have an open mind. When people think about college they think about parties and boys and having fun. However, college is so much more than that. The academic opportunities are endless. There are internships, clubs, interesting classes and study abroad opportunites. When it comes to the social aspect of college, you meet so many great people that share the same interests as you. When taking classes that interest you, you develop special relationships with professors. All around, college has been an amazing growing period and SO much more than partying and goofing off.

Melissa

I woul tell myself that highschool is easier then it seems. I would teach myself how to study the way I study in college so I would have done better in highschool.

Belinda

Anything worth having doesn't come easy .

Fazeela

I would tell myself to calm down. College life may not seem like the easiest thing to transition into and you may get lost once or twice, but once you get there, it's not that bad. The school work is tough if you don't do the work and study. But as long as you attend your classes and get help when necessary you'll be fine. There will always be people around you that are willing and able to help you with your problems.

Julie

I would say that it is important to pick a school that has a large community of people with similar traits.

Schadracia

I would advise myself to focus on classes and have fun at the same time . Too much fun can be detrimental

Kiara

I would tell my self it's okay to not know exactly what I wanted to major in, you take so many classes and get to try new things that most people end up changing up their majors or minors anyway. So it is very important to try new things and classes and to keep an open mind. I would also tell myself the importance of starting off strong with a good gpa. College exams and papers are alot harder than those in high school. So it is important to re-adjust your study skills and to do it quickly. It is so much harder to bring your gpa semesters later!!!

Matthew

I would tell myself that I am fully capable of handling anything that comes my way. I have worked so hard my entire life, I have seen many unfortunate things, and have gotten through much difficulty to let things get me down. No matter how hard it may seem, I need to believe in myself. I am capable of so much. Never give up, never let someone tell you that your dreams are not capable, that your dreams are too far-fetched, that you will never be important. If I work hard enough, and if I keep chasing my goals someday I can change the world, and positively influence someone's life. If you take a step back and look around you can see that you are learning so much, even when it does not seem like it. The amount of work load a teacher may give is only temporary, you will get through it, and you will do well if you give your best effort. There are billions who do not even get the opportunity that you have now, so make the best of it. Use the opportunity you are getting to help others. Finally, stay true to yourself.

Kaitlin

I would go back and tell my high school senior self to buckle down and maybe all A's instead of A's and B's. I would also tell myself to do more scholarship applications than what I did do, because even though I go to a community college now, and yes, it is cheaper, my parents still have 3 other college tuitions to pay. I would also tell myself to not get so used to the teachers being so nice and helpful, because not all professors in college are that way. I would also tell myself to continue and strengthen the study habits I had developed.

Katey

I have asked myself this question many times. I would absolutely tell my high school self to TRY HARDER! College is entirely different than high school, from the work load, to the people you're surrounded by. I wish I had told myself to stay focused and that there is no such thing as "slack time". Each assignment, quiz, test... everything counts. Now, as a sophmore whose grades have improved tremendously, I see that the work itself isn't actually hard. What's hard is finding the time, motiviation and devotion to put towards it. I would love to have the opportunity to tell my younger self, along with every other incoming freshman that there is nothing to be afraid of. Don't fear the word "college" and the work load that comes with it. Don't lose sight of that responsibility and those management skills within yourself that have gotten you through life so far, and you'll be sure to succeed.

Sandra

Don't worry about the future; everything will turn out fine. However, you know that people when they look back at the things they have done, they always have things they are proud of and things they are not proud of. Keep on doing the things that make you proud of yourself, like school and the extracurricular activities. However, I wish you wouldn't overwork yourself so much with the activities at school. Don't take all hard classes. It's not really worth it here. Enjoy your free time and balance school with your social life well. . I think it's better for you to do less school, less extracurriculars, less social time, as long as you do each well and wholeheartedly. Don't let boys distract you. Don't let friends distract. If you can, wait until college to even think about relationships! You need more time to yourself to figure things out. If you're not happy in a situation, leave it. These are things your future self has learned now, but the hard way! The easy way of learning things is so much better. It's called wisdom. Be wise. Follow your heart-your own heart.

Jennifer

i would tell my self to appy for alot of scholarships and to check if schools are planing on tuition hikes in the future. Also single rooms are worth the money.

Jordan

I’ve made mistakes as everyone has. In high school, I always regretted that I was very unreceptive to meet new people and had only a scarce number of offhand friends. When leaving for college, I made the common resolution that I would be reinvented into a new, more optimistic and outgoing person. I didn’t think that it would take work, though. There was a thought in the back of my head that my college experience would be just like popular movies, where the nerd goes off to college and finds themself as a completely different person with many caring friends within moments. Real life is not the movies, of course. A person has to work to meet true friends, and I didn’t as much as I should have. I would tell my past-self, like so many others had tried to advise me, to engage in as many socializing situations, such as clubs, sports, and community service organizations, as I could while also focusing on my studies to get the best grades possible. Now, with this counsel I’ve figured out, I have joined several groups. Better late than never!

Sarah

Just because everyone else thinks you should apply to more colleges, you shouldn't stress out about it. You are doing just fine applying to the only one you actually want to attend. Once you get to school, you should try a little harder to make connections with your classmates, both in your 500-person lectures and in your 16-person discussion class. At the very least you will be grateful to have someone to study with come finals. If you're lucky, you'll make some honest-to-goodness friends. And it never hurts to have sometime to borrow notes from, make small-talk with while waiting in line for food, or ask for directions to the Package Center. Try a little. It will pay off.

Brenda A

Do your homework/research as much as you can about what colleges offer in regard to your likes and dislikes! Start no later than your sophomore year in high school!

Abigail

Be diverse in the classes you take. Be assertive when looking for scholarships and different ways to best complete your education. If you have an idea of what you want to do, there are normally different ways to get the degree. Different degrees can help you do different things. For instance, a teacher can teach what they majored in and minored in. So be assertive and get your moneys worth!!

Genevive

I have learned that things don't come easy in life and that hard work pays off in the end. I took education for granted about two years ago, but once i returned i realized that it's not just about getting a degree., but about aquiring the knowledge to make a difference in the world. I now value knowledge and want to learn all i can about the field of psychology. I am also now serving as a positive role in my little brother's life, which he deserves .

Melissa

My experiences at college are valuable because they are going to get me to where I want to be. I've gotten into an internship at the museum that I've wanted to work in since I was a little kid. It may not work out with the state hiring freeze, but once things open up I'll already have expereince there. And if not, then I have already figured out that I know what I want to do with my life and have had a chance to gain valuable expereince that will let me get into museum work after I graduate.

Alison

Attending college was never an option for me, I knew that I would go. What I did not know from attending SUNY Albany was how much I was going to love my experience here. I have gotten a valuable education, with some teachers I will never forget. Some of the teachers I have had here are the best teachers and people I have ever known, they made school worth my time. I have also gotten best friends out of college. I was able to join a sorority and clubs, and from all of them I have some friends I will be able to stay friends with forever. Not only the friends aspect, but through the organizations I joined, I am able to forever network. I can honestly say I have had a positive college experience.

Jenny

College has been an emotional blessing to me, with so many spirals and thrills. I am learning how to work for the achievement of my dreams. Which is a privilege, I value because the generations in my family before me have not had a real college opportunity. It is super easy to say what you want to become, but it is not always an easy ride on the way there. College is full of forks in the road, but it is those sometimes-unsure forks that helped me find my set path through options and choices. I loved the assortment of classes that interested me, and many of them I took as electives, because you never know when that knowledge may be of use,. College is giving me courage to speak up, ideas to help parent my three boys, and the tools to make it as a teacher in an early childhood profession. Every person has hopes, can become dreams, and sometimes regrets. I do not want the burden of I should have on my shoulders. My college understands who I am, and that is why I continue to make it. I have the support of wonderful teachers and faculty.

Alexander

Throughout my college experience I have obtained new life-long friends, more knowledge, a greater understanding of the world and its politics as well as the chance to take the next step into adulthood by living on my own and taking responsibility for my actions. It has been very valuable to attend SUNY Albany because the university has provided me with a good education which will assist me in obtaining a job in the struggling job market of today that now demand a college degree or at least college experience. Attending college is also very important to me due to the fact that, although I am the youngest of three, when I graduate I will be the first college graduate in my family.

Amanda

I love being in college. I have always been a friendly person and love meeting new people. SUNY Albany has provided me with such a diverse student body. I grew up in a mostly white town which is the opposite of those that attend SUNY Albany. SUNY Albany has definitely opened my eyes to the many diverse cultures that are out there. Diversifying my mind will set me up for the "real world." I am hoping to go into the Public Health field which deals with many diverse people from all over the country and even all of the world. Going to school that is so diverse has really taught me to open my mind and learn from these diverse people which I hope I can continue after I graduate.

Micahel

I have gained a lot of good experiences from my college. The first major experience was living on my own, which was great, especially when I was surrounded by others who were in the same boat. I also gained a lot of pratical experience such as doing research which is now something I realize is extremely important. Also life is what you make of it, college could have been horrible if I did not go out and live life. I was able to part of a community service fraternity which was a great experience. I also learned that everything we do has paperwork to it. All i's must be dotted and every t must be crossed. I also leanred that it is not necessarily the things you learn in school but rather that you have an ability to learn what is important. Also that you can apply what you have learned to get done what needs to be done. It was valuable because it gave me many tools that help me create the person I am, and the future I hope to obtain.

Be social!

I really feel that even though I attend a public school that I am receiving a top notch education. Every class, even if i'm not interested in the subject, I feel I take knowledge away with me. The professors always seem to find a way to get me enthused as well as the desire to lear.

Angeline

i enjoy learning and haveing proffesors that are passionate about thier work is fabulous. it only increases my interest in the topics.

First, it is better for me to go to this school than universities at Korea because at Korea people care alot about where they graduated. Also, I think it is especially better for me because I can experience different cultural differences and become more international and talanted person compared to others.

Krystal

I have learned to be independent. My school setting allows me to be both a student and independent young adult. The social scene at my school is great. With my school having graduate students, Ph. D students and alumni persons, my school becomes a great networking place as well.

Andrew

The most important thing i think i have gotten out of my college is be able to live on my own and handle my own problems. I think this is what makes a person successful in life if he can handle his own issues and knows how to keep pushing even thogh it can get hard sometimes. Alot of my friends, only after one year of going away to school ended up at there local communiy college, they either couldnt handle being on there own and taking care of there own responbilities or just didnt like being away from home. As for me i enjoy being able to live on my own and move on from just what i know and enjoy new experiences.

CHRISTOPHER

During my college experience, I have changed my major three times. SUNY Albany has offered me the opportunity to take a variety of courses of interest. At this time, I have chosen Human Biology as my major. My academic advisor has assisted in choosing the correct courses to help influence my decision. The couse work is very informative with many assignments which requires many library hours. The library is open late especially during the end of each semester. I have also made many lifelong friends at SUNY Albany. These friendships are valuable as we grow and move on into our careers. I am happy that I chose SUNY Albany.

Patrycja

College has been amazing so far. I'm surrounded by completely new people, which is wonderful because it gives me the opportunity to change how I'm percieved. In my freshman year of high school, I was a painfully shy and meek person. Over the years, I have grown more and more outgoing. The thing is, even though I had worked to become more sociable, the image of me as a quiet wallflower had already been burned into everyone's mind. I absolutely hated being thought of as "That Quiet Girl". It made me feel bland and boring. When I got to college, I knew I couldn't afford to make the same mistake twice. It was nerve wracking to meet so many new people, but it was also incredibly rewarding. I had all sorts of intersting conversations with random students, and a few of them even became my close friends. It's so good to know that people can finally see me for who I really am.

My college experience at Black Hawk Community College has been a learning experience. At first it was hard getting back into the groove of classes and homework. However, going to classes, studying for tests, doing projects, and doing homework has made me a better student. Going to Black Hawk has been valuable because it is close to home and family. Also, it has been a inexpensive and beneficial way to get my general education classes out of the way. It has also been valuable because I was able to do an internship at a local news station through Black Hawk. I've been able to develop good relationships with professors. With my first two years out of the way I've learned what hard work college classes are. One needs to be very disciplined and committed to schoolwork. I've learned that no matter how much homework that piles up, with a little determination and concentration I can get it done and succeed.

Attending Sierra College has been one of the best experinces of my educational and personal life. Many were critical of my choice of attending a community college to fulfill my general education rather than going straight into a university but honestly looking back at everything I am proud of my choice and advise high school students to follow my path. This will not only save the student a lot of money but also gives them a great transition from high school to college. Another benifit it provided me was that it allowed me to figure out a major I wanted to persue, it gave me the time I needed to realize my true interests. I also got to work part-time while attending school and got to stay close to family for another two years. In the end this path allowed me to grow up and mature, so now when the time to transfer and go away for college has arrived I feel more at ease and confident in myself and my future.

Michelle

So far, I have gotten a good education and I have met alot of great new people. I have also learned to be more responsible, hard working, and a better time manager. It has been valuable to attend college because going to college opens many new doors for me and it will help to increase my chances of being successful in the future. It also plays a role in shaping my character in helping me to be more efficient, productive and ready to proceed with my future with confidence.

stanley

i learned that college prepares you not only for educational purposes but also for sociability

Wade

Going to college has given me the opportunity to meet a diverse group of people from different backgrounds, which I didn't experience in high school. I have also been able to be taught by some of the best professors in New York. Being a Spanish major and Korean minor, never before have I had a chance to really communicate with speakers of those languages like I have on my campus. Experience, learning, and networking opportunities through my time at school has made it extremely valuable to attend.

Sabeena

Currently, as a sopohomore,my college experience so far has been unforgettable. I have positively changed and have become a more responsible, goal oriented young woman; These changes are due to living on campus. This experience has given me a wake-up call to reality and what life may hold for me after undergrad. It has given me the tools to take charge of the future I seek to have.

Brittany

The largest impact that this college has had on me is the great professors that give you valuable information that you can use throughout life. I feel as if University at Albany was the best pick for my personality. The school is very diverse and open, not too large but not too small and has a tremendous amount of resources for the students to succeed.

Adina

I never valued my high school education. I was depressed and failing every class. When I was 16, I was tested for ADHD. Something in me was missing; I had to prove I had a disability in order to salvage my senior year. Soon after, I started medication for ADHD and immediately my grades were improving. But, it wasn’t enough to enter a four-year university. This is my second year at Miami Dade College. College has taught me a lot of responsibility. I stopped hang out with friends every weekend, and instead I enjoyed learning. Something clicked in my head, an overwhelming urge to succeed. I needed to show my high school teachers that I could become something, and not fail life like they told me. But more than anything, I have shown myself that I am not a loser. I am anything I can visualize no matter how far-fetched the idea. I am all that I allow my soul to take hold of. I’ve gained the control I never had over my mind, and all I want now is to consume every piece of knowledge I can wrap my thousands of brain neurons around.

Shani

Through my college experience I have gained an understanding for what it means to serve my community. My university's strong emphasis on serving the community through whatever career we choose is a main reason why I love my university. It has been valuable to attend University at Albany because I have gained a quality public education. I have been gien the opportunity to gain an understanding of many different cultural groups, and even though my school is in small town Albany, New York, I feel that the education that I am receieving will prepare me for the real world. The University's motto is "The World Within Reach" and I know that when I graduate I will have learned all that I need to know to put the world within my reach.

Ahamed

Coming from Sri Lanka, a third world country, it is almost every kid’s dream to go abroad, especially to the U.S and attend college. Being able to attend college gives me a feeling of superiority and makes me feel blessed that I got a chance to come here to America. Attending college here at El Camino College has been a great experience for me. First of all I would like to say that I made a bunch of new friends! It’s very exciting for me personally to meet new people especially from other countries and an honor to study alongside them. College gives me the exposure, as in it shows me a glimpse of the real world out there and makes me understand what it takes to be successful. The value of attending college is priceless for me because my father grew up never being able to attend school. His dream was that his children should study abroad and get into very respectable professions. He passed away over a year ago and this has made me stronger and that much more determined to succeed in college at a high level and fulfill his dream.

Nicholas

My college experience to date has been an eye opener. It has not only showed me new ways of thinking and learning in order to extend my knowledge in my academia, but also has given me the chance to see myself in a new light by living on my own with out my parents. Responisbility has been instiled upon me that I have never before been exposed to. It has caused me to grasp it quickly in order to excel and I have done so successfully by achieving a 3.94 GPA in my first semester. All in all attending college was one of the most valuable choices i could have made and can not imagine my life being as exciting without it.

Nicole

I think "The World within Reach" is a great way to explain my experience at UAlbany. I've been given the opportunity to be introduced to and work with a diverse group of people. I've interacted with and made friends with people that at face seem so different from me, but it reality have more things in common. Other then making lifelong friends, I've been given the opportunity to fulfill my passion for community service. I've done over 120 hours of community service so far at UAlbany, and I've been able to make a difference in lives of underpriveleged children, improvished neighborhoods, and elderly adults. UAlbany has introduced me to new cultures and openness to new experiences I am certain I wouldn't have received at home. Becoming more inclusive is one of the most valuable things, UAlbany has offered me. In addition, UAlbany, is preparing myself for the real world, "life after college" by giving me the skills to work professionally. They have been supportive in providing resources that would assist in my career.

Desiree

I have learned many skills from being on my own. I have learned responsiblity the hard way and have also learned how to manage my money and time very well. I realized that college is not just about partying but it requires a tremendous amount of studying and effort. Going away to college was also very good for me because I was able to get away from home and make all new friends. It has changed me as a person because I went from shy to the outgoing, involved person that I have always wanted to be. College is the most valuable time of your life because it challenges you with the difficult classes but also helps teenagers find themselves. I have also made best friends that are mature and interested in the same pre-med field as me. We all help each other through hard times and even with academics because we take the same classes. College has also allowed me to network which will be very important when trying to apply to medical school in a few years.

Tammy

I have learned a lot about myself due to my new college "dorming" experience. I came into this school as a transfer student not knowing anybody. Although it was hard and challenging at times, I do not regret the experience and am glad I went through what I did. It has been very valuable for me to attend because I not only got more mature, I am actually proud of myself--I did not realize how strong of a person I really was, until I kept overcoming my obstacles and kept pushing myself to do better. Since I didn't have friends and family around for motivation or to keep me company, I pretty much relied on myself and took care of everything for the first time. I changed and grew a lot mentally, thankfully for the better. I was always shy, but I found myself being more talkative and open to people because making friends was important. I used to be very passive, but I stood up for myself when I felt people/situations were unfair. Although my first semester was rough, I still never gave up on myself and kept on going.

Alice

I have made quite a few life-long friends that I would not have been able to meet if it wasn't for attending this University. I have learned when to put the relaxing aside and crack down on the studying. It has been valuable to attend this school because I feel like the experience is unlike the experiences at any other school. It has truly been an unique experience that I am very grateful for and I will always look back at the good times I have had throughout these years.

Alyssa

My college experience is one I will forever remember. The first moment I set foot on the grounds of Northampton Community College I began to recognize a change within myself. I became a more out-going friendly person. I learned how to make friends easily and they soon became my second family away from home. Living in an on-campus appartment, I experienced multiple types of living situations. I had multiple roomates, all from different backrounds and lifestyles. This opportunity opened my eyes to morals, values, and family practices different than my own. I have become well rounded, more accepting, and caring to those close to me due to this opportunity. In attending challenging college classes, I have expanded my mind and thinking. I have become more organized, efficient, and successful. My professors at NACC taught me all the tools neccessary to become a successful dental hygienist. I enjoy going to work everyday, meeting with my patients, aiding in the improvement of their overall oral health, and helping them overcome potenial health problems. For these reasons, I have now to decided to go back to college to further my education and expansion of my mind.
