What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

cynthia

I've learned how to work with diverse people, people from conservative households, people who were from overseas, people who were extremely liberal, etc. As a result, I've learned about myself, how I could better improve my personal and professional skills to thrive in the workplace. The coursework encompassed all forms of learning which also forced me to adapt- flexibility is essential to become accustomed to in the workplace. College, essentially, pushed me to achieve more and discover my potential. No other institution would force me to test my potential in this way. And if I were to fail, the support and resources were there to give me chances so I can make my mistake before I do it in the workplace and suffer more severe repercussions. College has been experience that equipped me for real-life challenges and self-introspection. Had I not had the opportunity to better myself, I would not be able to justly better the community. Because of college, I am a step closer to the things I want to achieve in life.

I have gained many lessons from my college experience. On a basic level, I learned how to live and interact with people from various races, ehtnicities, cultures, religions etc. I also learned how to muti-task by juggling educational responsiblities, work and a social life; the art of prioritizing and time management became second nature as I balanced studying, extra curricular activites, an internship and of course partying with friends. I was able to gain the lesson of community service as I contributed to many community improvement/service pojects with my co-ed fraternity, Alpha Phi Omega , such as Habitat for Humanity, Make a Wish, Meals on Wheels, SUNYA recycling initiative, Big Sister/Big Brother mentoring program etc. and various fund raising efforts. I emerged from college welll rounded and responsible. I also felt a unique sense of pride as I was the first generation of my family immigrants from the West Indies and Latin America to graduate from college in the United States. Attending and graduating from college has been a invaluble experience in that I was able to achieve the American dream and transition from a child of hopeful immigrants to an "elite" college graduate and business woman.

Marco

So far throughout college I have managed to not only increase my social network with a more educated crowd but I have also been able to get connections that may benefit me in a future career. Also by increasing my mathematics skills I have gained a better understanding of real world problems within that respect.

Attending college is one of the greatest things I have ever done for myself. The experience of not living at home, and being in a big city with people who have similar interests is amazingly rewarding. I found that after being away at school I have gained a greater respect for my parents and myself. I know my limits and what I can and cannot do alone. I have become more of an independant person, and more of an adult since I have been away. I also have learned so much about each different field that could become a major or minor. When I first went to school I thought I wanted to major in biology, but I soon realized that I really love art history. It's a huge jump in majors, but the people I surrounded myself with in college respected my choice. I've learned that most of the people here aren't sure what they want in their lives either. College is the stepping stone into the adult world, it's a place to make mistakes and discoveries. College has helped me find my passion, and the experiences have made me a better person.

Linda

Education has saved my life; it helped me find my passion: psychology. When I was growing up without my mom, my yearning to be with her was perhaps as strong as the love I now have for psychology. Studying about human behavior in college has given me the knowledge I should know about my mom’s struggles such as depression and addiction. Without attending college, I would not be prepare for life’s struggles. Being the oldest of one brother and three sisters has given me the responsibilities I need as a leader. I am determined to be the first in my family to graduate from college. I hope to transfer to a four-year university next fall and study to become a teacher and counselor. I want to not only teach children and adults but also take the time to care and listen to them. Whether young or old, I would like to work with people as a mentor that helps guide them towards their future. As I go further in my studies, I hope my education will help not only my mom, but also those in need.

Jessica

planning experience, helping me really think about what i want to do with my future and that there is fexibility in what classes and majors to choose

Mariame

I learn that hard work is always beneficial. In today's life, having a college degree put me in a high position to get a better job. I not only change my life but also my community.

Transferring my second semester of freshman year from SUNY Potsdam was one of the best choices I have ever made. Before transferring I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. Because my parents told me to, I signed up for classes that would be required for a Biology major (even though I was horrified). I'm not sure what happened to make me realize what I wanted to do after I transferred, I think it was just something about the atmosphere of the campus. The only words I can think of to describe it is that it was just a really happening-kind of campus, it just gave me a little wake-up call. From that semester on, my motivation and drive to become a doctor has grown stronger and stronger. It was easy to find people who pushed me along the way ( a friend even convinced me to join the Phi Delta Epsilon International Medical Fraternity). I also became an EMT this past summer, I wanted to do something that would really give me the chance to make an impact. The greatest part of my experience was being able to compare two SUNY schools.

At the University at Albany, my experience have been so valuable. Everyone on campus took the time to help me and had given me direction as a freshman to be sucessful. Now that I am at my second year of college, I know the school so well. Even though the school has given and helped me so much, I also help the school back. I have been part of community service groups as well as peer service groups. Being part of those groups allowed me to give back to the campus in ways such as being a mediator for my peers and teaching awareness about the uniqueness of the campus. It has been so valuable to me because I now know that I am a voice for the school. The school has cared so much about me and that it had led me down the right path, I am the person I am today. It is so valuable in the sense that I was able to grow up so maturely and professionally as a person from all my experiences.

As I was walking down life's highway, I came upon a sign that read "The College Student's Grocery Store". As I approached the store, an elderly man full of experience opened the door wide for me. I passed through the door, and he smiled. I grabbed a shopping cart, and started heading down the aisle. I noticed that this store had every insight a college student could possibly gain from a college experience. Just then my phone began to ring. It was my mother. She said "Don't worry about getting everything on your list right now. You can come back for more later". So I continued. I found a huge box of time management skills. Can't have too much of that one, I mused. So I grabbed another box. I noticed independence in the bulk section, so I grabbed some and put it in a plastic bag. I realized that I needed wisdom to make the right decisions. I headed to the cash register, and began checking out. All my groceries have not yet been put into bags, but some day they will be, and I will walk out of that store with a priceless experience.

Haven't attend college but with the money to cover my expenses I'm look forward to it .

Amy

I have learned to be open minded and truly take in others opinions and listen to others stories. I am so fortunate to attend such a great school in which one of the best factors in my opinion is the diversity. I have made life long friendships with people around the world.. i dont think many people can say that from their college experience. I learned more from friends and classmates than any textbook could. It has been valuable to attend Albany, becuase i recieved an education that went into details about issues throughout the world not just regional. I have learned to take on a new prespective to the world. I wouldnt trade my experience here at college for anything.

Crystal

The most valuable thing I have gotten out of going to college is a new maturity level. It allowed me to grow and not depend on my parents. If I didn't go away to school I don't think I'd be as confident and strong as I am now. Everyone says "you need to find yourself" and I thought that was silly until I went away to school. It's true that you go through a phase where "finding yourself" will happen.

Laura

The major curriculum for my program (Journalism) encouraged us to be hands-on, to be bold; with experienced members of the media industry guiding our study. I have learned that while teamwork is important, and continues out of the classroom into so many career fields, success is only possible when everyone individually wants to reach, or better surpass, the goal. I am very much a self-motivated and deadline-driven person now. I am able to assess a task, formulate an intelligent strategy, and execute the process in a timely manner. I can't lie, I was a professional procrastinator in high school! That just would not cut it in this environment. I have had teachers who reached me in unique, inspiring ways; and I had teachers who clearly were not teaching because they wanted to be. Both were valuable- they provided an accurate example of the types of personalities I may have to deal with in a bustling newsroom! The recent budget cuts to the SUNY system are devastating, and I can only hope that our school will rebound in time for other students to have the fulfilling experience I did in [the Journalism program].

Being a first year student, I am on my own and I am my own boss, 24 hours a day. I have to be careful of my newfound freedom and with all this freedom comes responsibility. Even though my parents won't be around to follow up on my loose ends, I can’t let things go completely so this means I have to find my own style. So far it has been valuable to attend college because being able to track my money is one big stress factor. Stress builds up when I am sabotaging my budget and spending significant amounts of money on wants instead of needs. Often times, I would look into my student account and realizing that I am broke. Learning how to manage my money and spending wisely is a fundamental factor to survive while living on a college campus and this lowers my stress level. I have realized that checking my student account and not receiving an insufficient fund receipts during a transaction, results in less stress. Learning how to budget my money in college is not only efficient for the time being but it can help me eliminate debt for the future.

My college experience has been challening and dynamic. I have honestly learned something new every single day. It is a completely different experience than living at home or being in high school. I have grown and matured so much thanks to the past two years at SUNY Albany and I continue to grow more and more every day. I believe that it is an experience that everyone who has the opportunity should absolutely jump on. College gets you ready for the rest of your life. You meet new people, take more challenging classes about things you actually enjoy, you learn what you like and what you do not like. College is the time when you meet the rest you will have for the rest of your life and the memories you make in those four years will stick with you forever.

Reba

I have been a college student for one and a half years and I have learned many valuable lessons. The most important lesson was that since it is a large campus the professors will not know who you are until you personally go and introduce yourself. I also learned that even though not every professor is willing to help many are there that care and will help you if you take the first step. I learned to work hard and manage my time very well. Even with my entire work load I found time to have fun and make some great friends. This college has a mixture of races and ethnicities and I learned to respect my follow classmates and their beliefs. I learned that my beliefs might be different from theirs but if I extend the courtesy of being respectful to them, then they will return the favor and be respectful of mine.

Marie

My college experience has opened my eyes. I am only halfway through my first semester at SUNY Albany and I already feel like I have been exposed to so many different things that I would not be able to experience otherwise. I joined a group called Leaders in Service, which aims to help the community in the best way possible. It has helped me to realize how many people are less fortunate than I, and how much I am able to do just to brighten up their day. In November, we are helping to serve Thanksgiving dinner to over 5,000 people. The number of people who cannot afford to make their own meals really made me realize how much help is needed. Also, I am involved in Albany Business Leaders Emerging, which helps to link Business majors to many different firms, and also helps with resumes and internships. I feel that what I have gotten out of college is not simply an education, but it also is beginning to help me become a much more well-rounded person, which I am grateful for.

Justin

It has added so many skills to myself. It has helped me become a leader, by taking on roles and helping and guidind my peers. It has also expanded my mind to think in other ways, and perspectives that i had not seen before. It has made me stronger, mentally and physically. It has started preparing me for the real world and has helped me gain the upper hand in this world. It has taught me to be honorable, to have courage, and to be strong. My college experience has showed me that the more work you put in to something the more you get out. It's like climbing a mountain. The journey up the rocky and dangerous ledges are long and difficult, but when you get to the top of that mountain and see the beautiful valley on the other side. That work is what makes ot so special and makes you value that trip over the valley. I feel that the work i put into college will help me value my furue more.

Fatoumata

The diversity on campus. You get the oppurtunity to meet different types of people everyday, which is something I really love.

Begum

I learned so much in college, I literary gained a different perspective of looking at life throughout my 3 years of college education. The programs we have in school are very informative and I am now feeling much more responsible towards my community.

Cadidra

It has been the best college experience i ever has since i transfered here.

Laura

I never exactly knew what the college experience was in high school, but I knew it was something that I along with my senior class wanted. I chose to go to SUNY Albany and in doing so I have learned what the college experience is and have taken it for everything that it is worth. I knew that I was going to have to do this process completly blindsighted and on my own; which in looking back on it made me appriciate it so much more. Albany has suites that make it easy to make friends and freshman and transfer activities which made it ideal to meet others. Also there are tons of sports, clubs, events and activities that are all throughout campus; anything from laser tag club to Bussiness Fraternities. The college experience was putting myself out there and getting involved wth the unknown. Now I am in a sorority, I am the vice president of the Future Educators Club and I have been in a school musical for the past two years. Having oppurtunities like these and taking advantage of these oppurtunities has created my college experience and has created a better me and direction for my future.

Amanda

Throughout my college experience I have experiences multiple benefical things. I have learned to interact with people of other cultures ( I came from a very small town.) I have learned how to live with people that have completely opposite personalities than mine. I have gained independence and now feel I am prepared to enter the working world. I feel college is valuable because with it, you go further in your career life. Also, it is a great transitional stage between being a child and an adult because you get a lot more freedom than home, yet you still have authority figures such as your Residential advisors to answer to.

Bethanne

It has allowed me to learn my individual worth, of the overall ability to multi-task and be a self starter. It has also taught me more about the realities of the 'real' world.

Yanna

I got the experience of living by myself without my parents cooking for me or doind my laundry. I got the experience of making my own choices and descisions for my future. My parents don't know English. I am the first gerneration in my family to attend college. Since high school, I made my own decision to attend this college, and what should I major in without my parents help. Well, they can't help me anyway beside supporting me in whatever I wish to pursuit in since they are not educatated. College bring me a step forward to the real world that I eventually needed to face. More importantly, college helps me prepare to encounter future obstacles.

Zhiming

the most valuable experience is attending the social work courses. My major is social work and the major in sunt albany if national ranked. i enjoy taking those courses and participating in the community service program that the colloge provides me.!

Shakira

As a freshman attending the University at Albany, my college experience has just begun. I immediately learned the hard way that college doesn't compare to high school. As a student from Queens, New York, transitioning from the city to Albany was a challenge. Dealing with being homesick and overwhelmed from my academic work, it always crossed my mind to just throw in the towel and quit. However, the greatest journey starts by taking one step. In order to meet my goals I need to meet the requirements necessary. As a biology student, it is very hard balancing my studies and extra curricular activities. It is a struggle! College has quickly taught me how to be independent, responsible and productive. I came to far to quit now, and obtaining my BA degree is the first step towards accomplishing my dreams of becoming a medical doctor with my own practice. I am sure to grow as a person as I continue my college journey at SUNY Albany, and everyday is a new experience that I would not pass up; whether it is good or positive, one should just learn from all encounters.

I believe that Suny at Albany has helped me in many ways. Coming from a small rural community I expected to have a difficult time fitting in at a large school in an urban situation. I am pleased to say that this was not the case. After only a short period of time I felt quite cofortable. I am very excited about the field of study I have chosen and was even more excited to be able to take part in a summer internship in my field of study, which is Nanoscale Science and Technology. It was so helpful in giving me insight into career opportunities and options relating to the Nanoscale Sciences. As well, Suny at Albany is world renowned for their Nanoscale Science and Technology Masters program and their newly added Bachelors program. Students attending Suny at Albany are held to very high standards and I have every intention to fulfill my college studies here and hope to continue with their Masters program as well.

my college experance has taught to view the world subjectivly and to interact direclty with my fellow citizen. it has helped to become a citizen of the world and to embrace my nieghbor with love and compassion. To be tolerant and respectful of other belifes, and not to be feaerful but Intrigued by the wonderious verity this world has to offer.

In all honesty I think that I may have stumbled the most this year than I would have in any other school year. I have made some bad decision that could have permanently messed up all that I have strived for in the past. It goes without saying that the trasition from high school to college was rather difficult for me, if not unexpected. However the two things that I have learned from all of this, despite all of the classes and all of the hype from being a college student, is that you must never lose sight of what you are striving for and that it is okay to ask for help if and when you get lost. For a Drive without a Dream is like a Track without a Train. For although you may have ideas of where you want to be, it'll take that Loco-Motive to truly get you there, and don't forget that every train has a conductor.

LeiAsia

I actually have not started college. I start in january , so in hopes that this will do for this scholarship i will tell you what i hope to get out of my college experiance is to meet new people, party a little, and become a successful nurse. I know you are thinking i am a party animal but i am not i am 18 with no children and i have worked my whole life i just want to see what it is like on the other side which brings me to multi-tasking which is another thing i plan on getting out of my college experiance. Thankyou for taking your time to read this.

Matthew

Going away to college has been a great experience for me. It has allowed me to become independent and I now feel like I am ready to face the world on my own away from home. My college also led me to the greatest experience of my life which was interning at a concert venue for an entire summer. Had I not attended this school I would never have had this amazing opportunity. For this I am very grateful to my school.

shonnell

it has changed me into a better individual nd a student. I'm more confident in myself and stopped doubting myself

Although it is only my second year, I believe I gained some knowledge of how the real world works. There is nothing that comes easy or that is handed to you. Whether it’s getting a good grade or looking for a job, you have to work (and work hard) to obtain it. You have to take it upon your make sure you succeed and not be afraid to ask questions or ask for help when it is needed. I also gained the knowledge of many different cultures and beliefs’. In a school this big, you quickly realize that not everyone is like you and what you see as funny may offend others. Educating yourself on different beliefs and cultures really helps you avoid such sticky situations. It is important that I attend college and finish college so that I may prove all those who said “I could not do it” wrong. So that all the people who looked down on me can see that not only did I succeed, but I’m doing something that not only helps other people, but that I love. I look forward to seeing what my next few years in college holds.

At first, I thought Albany just was a party school for students who weren't serious about their college career. But after the first semester, I realized I was completely wrong. I found plenty of smart people at this university, and met many dedicated teachers that take pleasure in making sure their students learn their respective material. I thought that living away from home would be burdensome, but I came to the conclusion that I should be thankful for being a resident at the UAlbany campus. Living with one's parents isn't bad, but being away from them for a while can certainly be a rewarding experience since it has introduced me to the perspective real world, and served as a training ground for my personal development in an uniquely and independent manner. I confess that living in the UAlbany campus has greatly improved my people's skills, as now I am less shy, and also my ability to fend for myself. Hence, I confidently conclude that "maturity" has been the most valuable trait I have gained at UAlbany.

Joseph

I have gotten alot of college and it has been very valuable to attend. I have gained content knowledge as well as the skills of working as part of a team. I have learned to survive and excel in a huge college environment where my parents are not around to try to motivate me. I have learned how to live on my own and survive.

Deniz

I just started so I don't have much to offer. I realize that I am more prepared in many ways than others. I grew up in New York City and have had the opportunity to travel to other countries and meet people. I enjoy my professors and I look forward to the courses I am taking.

Tracy

I regret that years ago I went to a vocational school vs. a college/university. Now, I'm soooooooo determined to get my degree, have the college experience and pursue a degree in nursing.

Mathew

I have gotten out of my college excperience that you get what you earn. Every opprotunity or option that you get, you have to work for. College is what prepares you for real life and you have to treat it like that or you will not be the sucessful person that you want to be.

vanessa

I have become much more social and outspoken. I have learned alot from the professors and my knowledge of the real world has expanded tramendously.

Joseph

My experience in a community college environment so far has enabled me to realize that in this success-hungry society, everyone and anyone is replaceable at any given moment. For me, the key to standing out from the rest of the people seeking a 'dream' job is to have some way of showing that I am different from the person asking for an application next to me, which is why I am pursuing my college degree. As I am preparing to transfer to a university in the state of Florida, I constantly question why I am putting out all this time and money for some hope that a college degree will guarantee a spot of employment, which I know it doesn't. Maybe it's because I don't know what else to do at this point in my life, and I am just going with the flow. Or maybe it's because I love educating myself and I desire to build relationships while obtaining success-tools I couldn't get outside of the college atmosphere. I will only know if it has been valuable for me when it's all over. In the meantime, I'll enjoy it.

I'm learning about Critical Thinking and Learning Framework, at this time. I do think it will help me in the future and working with the public in the furture. In the past I have been a seamstress for many years, and no it is a dead-end career. So I am pursuing my Assocates Dergee in Accounting. To help with a new career. I have the time, since I was laied off from yet another job in sewing. Now I just need some help with the funding for my learning. I look forward to my new career in Accounting, and working with the public. I have worked with the public before, in retail. That don't pay very well either. That is why I have made the step to go back to school in my mid 40's. With a new career in Accounting, and later when my Grandchildren grow up and go to college I can help them. I was told, you have not because you ask not. Well I'm asking. Thank you so very much, for helping with my future, so I can help others with their furture.

Alexandra

Although I didn't have the most fantastic academic experience at Suny Albany I learned so many valuable life lessons. I learned to be a strong independent student. I learned how to make choices that I know are right for me, because I am the only one who truly knows what I need. I realized that teachers and administrators will not always guide you properly. I learned how to fight. Not physically. I still use my fighting skills to combat all of the males I encounter who don't know how to treat or talk to a woman. I figured out who I wanted to be, became that person and I learned how to be myself in so many different situations. Above all I met some of the most incredible friends I will ever have. College for me wasn't about what I learned in the classroom, but it definitely was about growing into a strong woman with a secure sense of self.

Kaleigh

I learned a lot about myself while attending UAlbany. On the outside it may look like I just went to class and partied in college. It turned out to be so much more than that. In high school I lived in a bubble made of a mostly upper-middle class white population. I lacked confidence and had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. When I was given my room assignment I was terrified because I was rooming with a person of a different race than my own. I am embarassed to admit that now. She turned out to be a great friend and through her I met a ton a people of different race, background, socioeconomic status and ethnicity. In that first year I made several friends that have remained to this day. They have made me aware of my strengths and have helped create a confidence and self-awareness that I was lacking. Through my classes I realized that helping people through medicine is my calling and because of the excellent help I recieved I'm on my way to achieving my goals with a fresh perspective on the world around me.

Felix

Learn new things and meet new people. Its quite an experience doing new stuff, exploring places youve never been.

Melissa

Knowledge is far greater than any person I know, place I will ever live and work I shall endure. These first semesters of college for me have been a life changing process. I have been told to not do homework, not stress over tests but to instead: learn for life. My college experience has taught me that knowledge does not come with a test, intelligence is not acquired by a score and stressing out will only leave you- stressed out. I have gotten out of this experience what it truly means to "learn beyond limits.” And its value to me is never ending because what I am gaining now is a plethora of knowledge that won't ever expire but only aspire.

Grace

I didn't want to go to SUNY Albany. It was my last choice school - a public school, I thought. Why would I go there? I'm applying to Princeton, Vassar, Middlebury. I'm bound to get into one of them. So Albany was my backup - and a good thing it was. I did get into my share of the private schools, but with a big family like mine (a sister ahead of me and two brothers behind), we couldn't afford to put me through a school that would cost $50,000 per year. I went to the Albany open house grudgingly - and loved it. I'm so glad I chose SUNY Albany. My experience here has been limitlessly valuable: I've been lucky enough to have brilliant professors who are as passionate about teaching as I am about learning, an Honors College that makes it easy to befriend other driven and passionate students, and endless things to do in New York's capital city. I've been challenged more than I ever have and pushed to put forth my best work at all times - something that's made me a better student and a better person.

Chris

Suny Albany was not my first choice in colleges. I chose this school because i knew familiar faces from back home that attended this school. For the past 2 years i have been here, all the familiar faces were gone. What this college gave to me was the spirit and courage to break out of my comfort zone and meet new people. Now i have a group of friends all over the state of New York that i cherish. Albany showed me how to party hard, but only if you work hard. This school can be defined as my second parents as in the growing up experience was a lot easier with the help of the staff here and friendly students that you help you out on a day to day basis. Overall, I'm happy with my decision of chosing albany as my school because as of right now Im optimistic about my future and have everlasting friends that i will share the best moments of my life with.

Johanne

So far I've partly learned how to live on my own, and it's been great. I'm learning how to take care of my own things when it comes to school and my personal things. This school has accepted me whole- heartedly and the people here are great. It's the type of place you always saw yourself at, and which I always saw myself at.
