I am learning the value of a dollar and how far it does and doesn't go. I am having to budget my money. Something mom always did before. I now see how much she struggles to make sacrifices for me. I think college is definately being an eye opener for me, but a good one!

During my first year at SUNY Albany I have grown to be an independent adult. I know it may sound cliche but for me it was a big step because my mother and I were so close. I wanted to stay home and commute back and forth but something told me to go away and when I finally decided to listen to my instinct I knew it was the best thing for me to do. There are time when I really miss my family but I know that I have a job to focus on right now and that job is school. Going away has taught me how to be strong and depend on no one but myself. That was probably one of the best decisions I have made thus far. I know I may regret it sometimes when I miss home but I know that if I didnt go away it would have been something that I would have regretted for the rest of my life.

College has taught me several things. I have learned the value of an education, time- management, responsiblity, professionalism, and so many more life skills. At first I was very shy but then realized that there is no reason to be. Everyone is in the same boat as I am and I should be going to the different events that the University puts on, since I am paying for an activity fee! I have made so many friends that I plan on talking to after graduation. College has changed me as a person and has pushed me beyond my limits. I can not wait to go back next semester to push myself some more. I have learned to appreciate my education now that I have to pay for it and will do anything to succeed.

I've made a lot of good friends and at the same time was able to keep up with my grades. I'm in a very good accounting program the school offers and so far my classes havn't been too bad. Ive gained a lot of social knowledge along wit common sense i lacked while i was living at home. It was just a whole new experiance for me

I have learned what means to be a college student. That it is'nt all fun and games. Although I had fun I still had to study and work hard to get a passing grade. It also gave me the oppurtunity to decide what I really wanted to be.

I haven't attended college yet. My first day of college will be August 30,2010. I hope that I will experience the whole package of becoming a young adult. I hope to develop good judgement and learn what it takes to survive the real world. The only things I wish to take from my college experience is a good education, new found friends, and the feeling of accomplishment. There are many mile stones in life, and I only hope the college will give me life lessons that I can take with me for years beyond.

Coming to the United States for college from the Orient really helped me open my eyes and provided me the opportunity to learn new culture. Going through college help me find my future careers direction and teach me the necessary skills to improve my credentials. In addtion to that, I was able to meet many new friends and appreciate the diversity of the American society.

I have not attended college long, but it has shown me that there is no limit to learning. Education is a very powerful tool, the more you learn the more you can better your future. Knowledge is a very important factor of life, with out it we cant reach the level of success we strive for. College has been so valuable because, it gets me to the goals and dreams I work hard for. It is hard work and time consuming but it all pays off at the end. Attending college proves to me that there is no end in learning, and the more we learn the more our minds open up as a wiser person.

My college experience has been a struggle to say the least. In my freshmen year of college my mother became quite ill thus my grades suffered from worry and regret. I felt as if I was neglecting my duties as a daughter by being at the University at Albany and not by my mother’s side. Thus with her encouraging words I completed my freshman year disheartened and confused. My first semester of my sophomore year seemed to have the same bitter sardonic tone; for I found that my health was also in jeopardy. To say the least I tried my best and fought through my ailment. I hid these burdens and still continued to be involved with my campus activities, volunteer projects and school work. I decided that I was not going to let this defeat me. I wanted to achieve and remain the determined persistent young woman that I am, so I did just that. I ended my sophomore year with a 3.1 semester gpa, the highest in my college academic career. I embraced my burdens and used them as stepping stones instead of handcuffs that would hinder my growth.

The most important lesson that I have learned is that hard work pays off. When I started school I battled with depression, resulting to my withdrawal once and being academically dismissed once. The depression resulted in me not caring about studies and not attending classes. I have since discussed the situation with my doctor and the disability resource center on campus and have found ways to handle my depression, but the most effective medication is my new determination to finish college. Getting a letter of dismissal is an absolutely horrible feeling. Now that I am back in school I have decided to not let myself and my parents down in that fashion again. I have been readmitted to the college and currently hold a 3.33 GPA

My college experience has at times felt like a curse, but has turned out to be a blessing. My parents did not attend college, so I have been attempting to achieve in uncharted waters. Because I could not rely on my parents to help me, I had to embark on my own journey. College has put me in relation to some very talented professors whose insight and perspective have changed my life. I have learned how to create on demand, and how to create out of limited resources. I have tried different artistic and social techniques that I didn't know existed prior to college. I have felt small and overwhelmed, and had to grow past those feelings. After I figured out the system, I have had the opportunity to help other students. The experience of helping others has motivated me to expand my major out towards more altruistic endeavors. Completing my degree will open up the possibility of being accepted into artist residencies. I have developed my skill sets, and expanded my perspectives. The benefit of attending a liberal arts college was the diversity of courses available. Because I attended college I am a more confident learner.

Before going to school, I was unsure of what exactly I wanted to do. SUNY Albany has immersed me with great people who are willing to help you out because they're all on the path to success. The teachers are open minded to students views and can see if you need help. I believe my social skills have progressed immensely and I have made friends that I will cherish for the rest of my life. The school and my language classes have opened my mind to new ideas, cultures, and people. Overall, this school is great because it really opens your mind to the world through the diverse population and enhances tolerance.

Tammy

My college exerience has taught me that to be someone, and to gain knowledge I must set myself apart from those who aren't willing to do so, and only surround myself with positive and successfull people. In college I learned how to give speeches in front of large audiences, and this helped me perfect my art of poetry and spoken word, which has today, cofidenty led me to perform at open mikes all over New York City, and embrace this talent.

I have gotten everything out of my college experince, some people take college too lightly. People think college is all about the parties and friends, but what i got out of it is a great education. Its be valuable to attend because i came out of each semester knowing more than what i knew when i went in and i could apply it to daily life. College has been great for me and it make me want to continue to learn.

Jessica

I love my college experience so far. I have learned a lot about how to be independent and how to accomplish what I need to accomplish. The professors are helpful in giving advice that one can actually use and that has helped me immensely.

Rebecca

Before transferring to SUNY Albnay, I attended a private 2-year art school. This experience was everything I was not expecting and did not want. I learned a lot about myself and about people in general. I found that a private school, with few students, all interested in the same thing was a huge mistake. I needed diversity, sports, clubs, a larger selection of classes to choose from, more opportunities to expand. All of these attributes I found at the University at Albany. Being local to Albany, I would be able to stay at home with my family, get a job, and take on more responsabilities of being an adult. It was valuable for me to attend a school that I didn't like, because I learned a lot about tolerance, and what I need in order to suceed. Attending a school that is right for me, allows me to expand and learn in more ways than I thought I could. Every experience is a learning experience.

Adam

I have a gotten a great academic experience at my school. I was able engage with my professors academically and gain knowledge and wisdom from them. Learned many core values from my professors and other classmates and friends. I was gain to many real world experience at college like living by myself and becoming a better person. I think SUNY Albany has given me so much that I it is hard to put them all on paper.

Daniela

Attending college has helped me grow up as a person and learn who I am. I have gained lots of knowledge and not just to pass the courses but to use for the rest of my life. I feel lucky and appreciate the fact that I am able to attend college and I can't wait for more to come!!

I prefer to describe college as an environment where you can discover who you truly are, or who you have become. Becoming someone isn't necessary negative. In most cases becoming someone can be a great discovery. I have gotten a tremendous dose of character, knowledge, and a reconstruction of reasoning since I've been in college. College should be considered as a testing lab, because it goes to prove that we can all get along in peace in the world. My school, for example, is a testament of this fact. As highly diverse as it is, the rich backgrounds of the student body is the sole engineer to a progressing institution. I've learned greatly from my student body and faculty, whom come from different places of the world. Through my experience, I have discovered my greatest interest. College has been valuable to attend because you notice the tremendous intellectual growth in oneself and the curiosity of the world around you. It has certainly been valuable because I now come home for the summer, thirsty for more knowledge.

Sarah

I've been able to dive right into my major freshman year and have had great experiences in anthropology the whole time i've been there including to field schools in central america and an internship at the state museum. I am also looking forward to an independant study with one of my professors. I've gotten to know my professors personally which makes me feel good. I've also had the time and interest to expand my field of study to include a second major in art history. I've really enjoyed every class i've taken and have learned about a wide variety of subjects. my only complaint is theres only so many classes I can take in 4 years when I'd really like to take so many more!

April

Because of my college experience, I have gotten a better sense of knowing who I am as a person. Living away from home was very hard and SUNY Albany was the only school I applied to that offered a chance for me to live away from home. Everything from learning to cook, to doing my laundry and actually being responsible for myself pushed me as a person and because of that I am more independent. I am also less afraid of new challenges I have to face because living away from home was one of the biggest challenges I could have ever imagined. It has been valuable to attend SUNY Albany because it was here that I came to the realization that my life goal was to become an accountant at one of the Big 4 accounting firms. The classes, resources available and teachers helped me make this decision. If it wasn’t for SUNY Albany, I probably would still be undecided, but this school gave me something very valuable and important which were the tools to learn what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.

Knowledge that I received while attending this school are not only the class materials I learned from this college. I have also got many experience from this school and learned from them. I became more independent, I started to cook, clean, and pay my own bills. This I know I will not get if I haven't attend this college because I learned from my friends. I will never forget what this college brings me and will someday give back to this school if I am able to.

Sam

I have been introduced to many cultures and customs from all around the U.S. and other countries as well as gained much more of a personal outlook on life and my career.

Deborah

What I have gotten from my experience at this University so far is that inspite of what people may say Education is a good thing and there are good professors and faculty that truly are interested in the success of their students. I attended several colleges over the past 10 years and SUNY at ALBANY outrank them all. Because I am an older student returning to school I needed that special atention, I don't mean for someone to hold my hand but just to know that the staff are working as hard as they can on my behalf so I can achieve my dream of graduating an absolutely terrific University with my bachelors degree with full honors.

Ashley

I have recieve an invaluable amount of knowlede and leadership experience from my time at SUNY Albany. I have grown not only as a student but as a person. Living on campus has given me a lot more responsiblity and maturity. Through my involvement on campus in the peer assistance organization called Middle Earth. My experiences with working with hotline clients will prove to be enormously helpful in the future as I pursue my doctorate degree in counseling psychology as well as just interacting with people in general. My primary career goal is to become a counseling psychologist after I complete my undergraduate degree and doctorate degree. I would love to focus my practice on counseling children and young adults; may be even doing some family therapy. Later after I have established myself in my career as a counseling psychologist; I plan on getting my teaching certification. My experiences on the hotline will also help me in my future plans of becoming an educator. My journey at SUNY Albany has open my eyes to so many amazing ideas and provided me with countless oppportunities to help my community. I am very greatful for my SUNY Albany experience!

I've met a score a new people that have brought diveristy to my life. They have influenced and enabled my maturity and I have been privy to a circle of understanding.

I came into the United States as a high school graduate. As of then, i hadn't experience college life in my country, that i was more comfortable in. I started college at the age of 17 in the Community college of Aurora. It was so much fun to see students play on their wears and wear different and diverse things that we weren't even allowed to in High school. I was so exicted. Trying to make friends isn't one thing that would work out well in college, unlike in Highschool, you can easily find where you belong.Coupled with that, it was even hard for me to find people to communicate with if they find out that i was only 17 years. Their reaction to this was always "What are you doing here, you're meant to be in High School." Been in college hasn't only brought me bad experiences but also good ones. I get to be treated like and adult, more than those who are older than me in High School. But no matter what, going to college has been the best experience of my life.

College for me has been like diving into a bath of knowledge. Having complteted my AA this year I have left Olympic College feeling that I have gained knowledge which will lead me into my future and allow me to be a more succesful member of society. I believe that knowledge is something to be chased after all throughout life and have viewed my college experience as the beginning of this journey in pursuit of knowledge. My college experience was extremely memorable and is an example of two years spent blossoming mentally and socially as well. My college experience has been one which I will not soon forget and has begun my maturation into a well rounded person, it has left me with the most valuable thing one can earn from school- an education.

Malia

At first, college was just a way to train for a career. After taking my first semester's classes, I discovered that education is established to enrich your life. College has fostered a deep affection for learning and reading. I have gone on explorations with Hernando De Soto and witnessed royal love affairs in the hundreds of novels I have delved into. Overall, college is priceless. You can't price molding yourself into a brighter, well-rounded, contributing member of society.

Emmanuel

Ualbany has prepared me to face the harsh world outside of its campus and i made alot of life long friends.

Michelle

My college experience has allowed me to expand my mind and who I am as a person. I learned to follow my dreams and not just follow the mold. I would be a much different person had I not attended college and still different had I stayed home to attend school. By going to a University that was three hours away from my home I became independent even more so than I was. It was my choice to attend class and I was my own motivator. My professors were extremely knowledgable and the amount of information I gained from them has changed the way I do things, the way I carry myself, and the way I enjoy materials. There is no way to put into words how valuable attending college is and even though it was expensive, it was worth every penny. Not only for the education but the social and personal development as well.

By attending my 2-year community college, I have been introduced to the adult and business worlds comfortably and gradually, rather than radically and suddenly. At community colleges, one meets seniors as well as young parents, college-aged people, and even high school students. One becomes familiar with the processes of registration, socializing, learning, and working with this wide range of people from the community and representative of the diversity in the larger environment before being required to depend on the larger environment for livelihood and being expected to know how to interact with it. This immersion is of greater value than predominantly 20-something students at four-year universities can begin to imagine. They spend years tightly cocooned among others who are essentially as inexperienced as they are, who have similar interests to theirs, and who have responsibilities nearly identical to their own. I am an infinitely more mature, seasoned, patient, tolerant, gregarious, and contented person for having been shown a true picture of the world while still studying, and for having had the time and setting to get to know genuine and "average" yet amazingly multifarious students while I was still coming of age.

One of the main things that I have learned, especially in the classroom, is that to be an astrobiologist I have to work alot and do things that I do not like. I feel that college has allowed me to get away from the normality that I was used to and introduced me to a different culture. This is something that I think all colleges should aim for because sometimes, those attending the college are usually there to escape the enviroment that they were living in.

Allison

My college experience has been outstanding. I have grown up so much and learned to be a lot more independent and less reliant on my parents. I also have learned how to communicate with others and have become a lot more responsible in all aspects of my life. Going away to college is an experience that is irreplaceable. I would strongly suggest every person to go away to college because you learn so much about yourself and also so much about others. You learn to respect other peoples viewpoints and also by going to diverse school I was able to make friends from different cultures and backgrounds which is always an eye opening experience. Maturing tremendously has been one of the most valuable life tools going to college has taught me.

Assuming that I can go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior. Knowing what I know now about college life and making the transition, the advice that I would give myself is don?t go to a 2 year college. The worst decisions that I have mad in my education was going to a 2 year college. I was fearing how I was going to pay for college, and that by the time I get out of college I wont be able to pay it back. Everyone was telling me that it was going to leave you in dept, that you will not be able to pay back, and I by that time I will most likely have bad credit and won?t be able to buy a house or a car. I would also advise my self to go a 4 year college. Because going too a 2 year college is not as advanced as a 4 year college, and its not as open, friendly, and your just spending 2 years there, unlike a 4 year college where you can meet new people. A 4 year college is like an advanced high school.

Ashley

I have not started college yet, but I have been accepted for the 2010-2011 school year as a college freshman at MCC in Brighton Ny. I can say that just from going through the process of attending I have learned quite a bit. In order to get to where you want to be in college you have to work hard and be determined to get there because if you are not ready and up for the challenge you will fall behind and fast. College is a fast paced world, and alot of it is going about your own way. I can definatly say that college will be very valuable to me. I will gain more experience and learn how to be more independent. Classes will teach me what I need to know to get my career going and to keep me in touch with my future goals. I feel that going to college is the best thing that I can do for my future.

Samantha

SUNY Albany is extremely diverse which has helped open my eyes to people of different cultures, socioeconomic status', religion, etc. I have also been forced to teach myself a lot more self dicipline so that I can manage to get my work done on time and properly.

Nicole

Every college experience is different for everyone depending upon involvement, classes taken, friends you meet and professors that someone has. My college experience has allowed me to take on a new responsibility. High school was full of teachers always trying to help you out if you missed an assignment or were absent. College allows you to show your maturity and true colors of becoming an adult but having papers done on time as well as going to class and being there on time. Something very valuable while attending college is the professors. Some are better than others, but you learn to adapt through time and what expectations to meet. There was one particular professor that had a big impact in my life. My field study is Criminal Justice and being a female, I fall under the minority group which can sometimes be discouraging, but one specific professor always had encouraging words. He taught me that if you really want something and are willing to do what it takes to get there you will always be able to reach those goals. There will be set backs in life, but instead of viewing them as discouragements use them as life lessons.

Kevin

I have gotten much more out of my college experience freshmen year than just the things I have learned in classes. I have seen more closely what it is like to be on my own and live somewhat in the real world. It is more clear that now I am going to need to have better judgement and more responsibility for myself if I plan on succeeding in college and beyond. Not only hasmy first year of college benefitted me in these ways, but I have also met many people and tried many new things. I believe that I have met a few life-long friends in college, and have made many connections that will be beneficial in the future, even after graduation. College is an investment, so you need to get the most value out of it as possible, and I believe I have done just that. Going to college is the most valuable thing one can do in a lifetime, and I couldn't imagine being anywhere else.

Sreyrath

I have involved so much in my school so far. I am a member of a professional accounting fraternity, Beta Alpha Psi, President of Badminton Club, and Vice President of Dean's Leadership council. These positions that I am holding have given me the ability to learn and grow as a person. I have learned what professionalism is, how to manage my time wisely, how to be a good leader, and how to set my priority in life. I?ve also learned the benefit of giving back to the community. Sometimes, I do feel like helping out the community and others around me teach me something new every day. I have been keeping myself active and very busy these past three years in college and yet I love every moment of it. The experiences that I have been through will sure help me to complete my future goal of being a successful person in the future. I strong believe it is very valuable for me to attend college because I would never learn such great experiences and opportunities like I have learned in my school right now.

SUNY at Albany was an invaluable experience because the school has something to offer for everything. I double-majored in World History and Film studies, and only at this school was I enabled to write a Senior Honors Thesis that was able to incorporate both with another area of interest; the socio-economic implications of squatter settlements in Rio de Janeiro. My professors, advisors, and administrative staff were more than accomodating. For the first time in my life, I was able to really form relationships with educators who encouraged me to focus on subject matter that interested me, and I was able to thrive in this open environment. Not only was I pleased with the academics, but I am pleased with the organization of the campus. SUNY at Albany is a large school and yet it was organized in a way that made adjusting to college less threatening to freshmen and more nurturing of lifelong friendships. The friends are all from different hometowns, with different majors, interests, religions, and yet we all meld beautifully. SUNY at Albany is,by definition, a large school, but it truly has a homey feel.

Leanne

My college experience has been wonderful. I learned alot about myself during the past year. I have learned to balance school work along with the responsibility of living away from home. I know I have matured over the past year. I also learned that in order to succeed I needed to be more assertive. I've gotten involved in a few clubs on campus and that has allowed me to make more friends. Some of those friends I can see having in my life for a very long time, even after I am finished with college.

David

College has taught me many things, from how to solve Calculus problems, to what causes delinquency in urban settings, but the most important lesson college has given me is to be open to new ideas and opinions that may or may not be different from my own. Everyone comes from a different background, and everyone has a different persepctive or area of expertise to which they can contribute. College has taught me to look past the what and focus on the why. Why do they think this is a better solution to the problem, why does this happen given certain circumstances but not others, etc. College has diversified me, opened my eyes to things I probably would not have seen otherwise, and granted me the ability to see things through the eyes of others. It has greatly improved my education not just in my area of study, but also improved my social life and ability to interact with those whom which I would not normally associate with.

Sara

College is something that everyone should attend, specifically, going away to college. I have learned so much about myself this year than I ever thought I could. Sure, I learned things about my major, Journalism, and my minor, Japanese, but the kind of invaluable skills that one can only learn on their own is possible when you go to college. I finally got to sing and dance, one of those silly "pipe dreams" I had when I was little. I am now taking tap dancing and singing lessons and I get to do whatever I want and be whoever I want now. I am so greatful for that.

cindy

You get to learn new and exciting things when you go to school. Makes you want a better job and and to stick with your studys.

Sona

Entering college, I was unsure of what I wanted to be. I decided to undertake finance and psychology as my majors and felt that the combination could make for an interesting career. Going into my second year, however, I felt something was missing. Perplexed about my future, I ran from my indecision. I studied abroad in Europe and explored the world. The exposure to different countries and people was humbling and exhilarating. A conversation I had with a fellow program participant ended with "The world is ours". These simple words made me realize the potential and opportunity I have been blessed with. I returned with a new-found confidence and quickly added pre-medicine to my discipline. I came to the decision that I would go to medical school and ultimately into psychiatry. This declaration forced me to test my boundaries academically, sharpen my time management skills, and turn to my family and friends for needed support. I am now in medical school pursuing a dream that at one time seemed so far and foreign. Sorting through my desires and fears was accomplished in Albany and has led me to a place that I can truly say I am happy.

I AM GLADE TO BE BACK IN COLLEGE. IT HAS GIVEN ME THE CHANCE TO GOOD BACK AND MAKE A BETTER LIFE FOR MY SELF. I VALUE THE CHANCE TO LEARN ANYTHING NEW. I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE A GOOD LIFE FOR ME AND IF I HAVE FUTURE CHILDERN. AS FAR A MEDICAL GOSE I HAVE ALWAYS HAD A INTERREST IN IT EVERY SINCE I WAS A YOUNG CHILD. GETTING THE CHANCE TO ADVANCE IN THIS FEILD IS VERY IMPORTANT TO ME.

An undergraduate education is not a given in my family, indeed, I will be the first person in my family to receive an undergraduate degree. As I have come to greatly appreciate as I?ve matured, receiving an education is in fact a great privilege, and with privileges come responsibilities. While in college, I have had the oppurtunity to hold myself to an extremely high standard of academics while simultaneously taking part in community service, research, sports, music programs, clubs, and a part-time job. However, I have also grown to understand that the classes do get significantly harder, and it's more and more imperative to stay focused on academics and not get caught up in partying or sleeping in. I have gotten so much out of my college experience, from learning how to work with different types of people, to working harder than I ever had to in high school on studying and keeping up with material, to balancing out the many types of activities and responsibilities I have outside of the classroom. Although I won't be in school forever, these kinds of skills will continue to help me evolve into an adult and an excellent professional.
